8)
Saturday 3pm kick off.
We continue on the march to European qualification.
Time to forget the shitfest yesterday and look to this massive game at VP.
COME ON.
FTF
-
Literally is a ‘win at all cost’ game
-
We're spent.
0-2
-
We'll do 'em. By hook or by (Garth) crook(es).
-
Maybe, if we can freshen the team up enough, we can pull it off.
-
Last time we beat them at home was 2008 when Laursen and Mellberg scored. Since then we've W0 D2 L10 (inc a LC game). And lost the last 8 (inc a LC game).
We'll twat them 4-1.
-
I think we'll win a thriller and keep our European chances alive.
3-2 for me.
-

Shocking stats. And embarrassing.
-
I'll take 3-1 to the Villa if I "were offered it beforehand". I'd also take 1-0 or 6-4, even 2-1.
-
⅔ going for a Spurs win so far?
-
Got to believe but if only. Need to move the ball much quicker than we did yesterday and please no appearance by Bailey
-
Loss
They'll be too clinical up front for us.
-
Bit early for this one isn’t it. Footy would be delighted.
-
Kane to fall over a blade of grass and get three penalties
-
We’ll come roaring back and take all 3 points.
2-0 Villa.
-
Think we’ve achieved all that we are going to for this season. 0-1 or 1-2 to the Spuds
-

That's absolutely disgusting. I'm sick of stats like this.
-
I’m confident we are not done yet. I think we will see a massive effort vs Spurs and a huge morale lifting win. May not be enough in the end but we will give ourselves a chance of finishing in European spot going to Anfield. Lots can still happen between now and when it all ends, but it all hinges on us getting a win next weekend. Put me down for 2-0; Ollie and Buendia.
-
Definitely in must win territory now. Time for a final push.

The last line, all the way.

They'd still be above us if we win 2-0, and then we've got Liverpool away

True but it would be a very "spursy" thing to drop points against Brentford and Leeds, this is a team that have dropped points against Bournemouth, Southampton, Wolves and Everton in the last 5-6 weeks.
-
Spurs are pretty rubbish lately. We'll have our injured men back for this game. Kamara, Cash to start this game and possibly Diego Carlos to freshen things up. 3-1 Villa.....
-
I'm not so sure that Spurs have looked rubbish, they've had bad halves (or is it half's?) but looked really good in others. Now Watkins goals have dried up I'm struggling to see where our goals will come from, and think we'd need at least 2 to win.
I'll say draw which would normally be a good point, but not enough to sneak into Europe. We'll play well and get done on the counter. Son will almost certainly score.

Just like what happened at their place on new years day??
I don’t know if we will win this, but I’m reasonably optimistic that we can, more than I was pre Wolves.
I’d go with
Martinez
Cash. Konsa. Mings. Moreno
Luiz. Kamara
Mcginn. Ramsey
Beundia
Watkins
3-0 (Watkins, Dougie, Moreno)

That's a shocking stat. Think we'll beat them to set up a grandstand finish to the season.

So the flat spot arrived, probably later than expected, but expected all the same. Next question is when will it end? The narrow aspect of the last two results indicates that what Emery has worked on is still very much there but individual drops in level can't be absorbed when you have a squad as thin as ours.
Players are returning, the target is still in our sights and the manager won't lose focus. But Son will score.
2-1
-
Team needs freshening up for sure, Ramsey and Buendia have been pretty ineffective last few matches and can see Ollie dropping too wide again as he's getting little service.
Kamara and cash to return for this, the press needs more energy than has been evident recently, and some composure in the middle please.
2-1 Villa

Kane's bound to score, so if Son will score then we're going to have to score at least 3 to win.
Thankfully, Spurs can't defend so 3-2 Villa!

Really want us to win this but the outstanding way we’ve played as shit as we have last 2 games can’t see it. 2-0 spuds with Kane scoring both.
-
0-2
-
0-2
Not sure this is still working!
-
Spurs won't sit back and park the bus like Wolves did, so whatever happens, I can see us creating a few chances. I'm glad Emery is referring to it like our cup final - because if we lose this, and the season is 99% over.
I expect to see the players REALLY up for this one, and to sneak a win, 2-1.
-
Is this on next Saturday at 3pm? Smirker should have stated it in his opening post, it's a mixed performance from the winger.

Yes mate sorry. I will edit it now.
-
Only joshing with you, all good.
-
3-2/4-3/5-4/6-5
Fucking goal fest with Kane doing his best to single handedly continue to save their season but ultimately failing (including diving and getting a pen).
-
I think we'll win, but if we don't I can't see us getting any more points for the remainder of the season.
-
We will win 4-1 - very confident about winning this game
-
I note from the poll so far that our confidence is draining away. It is possible that having lost the last two we could end the season with 5 straight losses😟

Those votes must have been cast before Brighton got pumped. It's back on now.

I would go with this selection as well.
We need McGinn in a more advanced roll, for the goal threat and high press. Watkins to start pressing again (hasn't put a challenge in for a few weeks). McGinn to support Buendia who has had feck all support from Bailey/Traore recently from the right and the opposition are beginning to suss Moreno out on the left.
We need to go for the jugular. up the tempo and europe may become a reality.
2-0 to the Villa. Watkins/Ramsey.

Which is probably a good topic for the Memories section. Our worst season for finishing, where we undid a lot of work from August to April and ended up lower than we should have done.
92/93 probably the obvious one. Held onto 2nd but our late collapse meant that it looked as if Yanited had eased to the title.
-
Sick of not beating these at home. First year back under Dean Smith we played really well, until Engels intervened by giving away a penalty then missing the ball completely for Son's last kick of the game winner.
Then last year under Gerrard we battered them senseless for 45 minutes, but went in 1-0 down when it could easily have been 6 goals scored for us.
Time to see what the boys are made of. Should be a cracking atmosphere, let's get things back on track. Emery to work his magic, 3-0 us.
-
It is also about time we doubled one of these Scab League bastards.
-
These were a given 3 points at home for ages as well, we need a proper twatting dishing out on Saturday for both practical and emotional reasons.
-
I think the atmosphere could be like Newcastle for this one.
-
It could be our last chance in terms of European qualification. Win and it's still very much all to play for. Lose and I just can't see it happening unfortunately.
-

We've definitely got to win, that's for certain. Otherwise we've got to rely on Spurs AND Brighton stuffing up, as well as us getting something at Liverpool, which I've mentally written off. Brighton have shown that they can lose to anybody but also beat anybody this season. They'll probably wallop Southampton, but then we need to hope that they lose to Arsenal, Newcastle, Man City and us. I can see them getting something at Arsenal, and also Man City if they've won the league by then. I can't see Spurs losing to either Brentford or Leeds.
-
We've run out of steam. Draw or loss.

Agree we've got to win. If Everton can beat Brighton there's no reason we can't grind out a draw at Anfield. Can also seeing Big Sam doing a number on Spurs on the last day of the season.
-
Yesterdays Brighton result will have stirred the fans so I think the atmosphere will help on Saturday.
-
Just win Villa, don't care how.
-
Don’t see any reason to fear Liverpool either, bar VAR of course.

Salah?

Risso, only if he dives and gets var decision in his favour which is a foregone conclusion at Anfield!!
-

He can't keep scoring at Anfield.
-
Just listening to talksport thinking all the talk would be about our big match v Spurs but all they’re droning on about is some non event Real v Citeh!!
-
Someone needs to knobble Kane.
-
Emery has done the right thing saying this is our cup final. I think the players and supporters will treat it as such. I wasn’t at the game when Laursen & Mellberg scored, so God only knows when I last saw us beat these, just like Man United, its about time. Its also my last game this season, as some relative has scheduled their wedding for the same time as the Brighton game!
So all in all, I’m really excited for this one. We’ve rarely let ourselves down under Emery and i don’t think we will on Saturday!
-
Spurs at home used to be my go-to match in the fixture list. Basically because I was obsessed with the FA Cup (knowing we'd won it 7 times but not really grasping that 6 of them happened before my grandad was born), and saw Spurs as our one true rival for that competition. I'm my head, Spurs were a pretty good team but we'd probably beat them at Villa Park most times and then maybe draw at White Hart Lane. Because Villa in my 7 year old head were clearly superior to every other club and the only chance anyone had against us was if they were at home and managed to nick a lucky goal. Every goal against Villa was obviously down to luck and not the opposition actually being better than Villa.
Anyway, that's my world and I'm going to stick with it even if it doesn't match up with empirical evidence. Us 3-1 Them.
-
I know what you mean, I had a soft spot as a child because of similar reasons and because I saw the Charity Shield against them at Wembley.
-
Just to add, I can't stand them now and would be happy if they slid down the league into nothingness.

Indeed. It was necessary.
It was the only time I got to see the Villa at the old Wembley.

Boxing Day 1997, you were still hungover on turkey and gravy. But Stanley Victor turned-up for the first time all-season and we smashed them 4-1 so you must have cheered-up.
-
7th November 1998. Dion's debut. Great game.
May 2004(?) 1-0 win, Angel with a header.
November 2004, another 1-0. Solano with a belter.
Yep, it's been too long since that 2007-08 season win
-
A league game against these particularly has never left my memory. It was in the late 1970s/early 1980s, Steve Archibald and Glen Hoddle were playing for them. Villa were 2-0 up and seemingly coasting. I vividly remember glancing to my right from the Holte End at the clock on the Witton Lane stand. It was 4.30 so only ten minutes to go. Suddenly Spurs came to life and scored three times in the last ten minutes to win the game! I've never forgotten the pain of that defeat.
-
The year was 1960 and living in Bedford. As happened then, we kids got together to play football on the local green. We used to argue incessantly as to which of our teams were going to be Spurs and which one Tottenham!! We were obviously well informed in those days..not.
-
There was also a game in the mid 80s, first home game of the season, we looked to have a good side on paper and confidence was high that we were going to get off to a flier and return to the glories of a few years ago.
Clive Allen scored a hat-trick and we lost 0:4
I think we might have run out of steam a bit this year, I'd be delighted, and a bit surprised with any kind of win.
-
Didn't we play Spurs on a boxing day at home in the '80s, Alan Brazil missed some really good chances for them and we drew 0-0
-
Lloris is out for the season.
Taking my lad to this for his 1st match, can't wait.

The one where he feints outside then drops his shoulder and curls a pearler in from outside the box?
-
Was a 1-1 in MONs first season. Angel missed at least one penalty. There are three games that come to mind when I think of this fixture - the 3-2 Platt hat- trick, the 2-1 game where Yorke scored a solo goal after a rare McGrath goal, and the 4-1 Boxing Day game where Collymore got two.
-
Was it against Spurs at home that Barry scored that lovely double step over goal?

I was at this game as a kid, think 82 or 83? My sister went to school and remained friends with Brendan Ormsby and his wife. They got us seats in the upper trinity then we were in the players lounge afterwards. I vaguely remember Peter Withe standing at the bar with a pint and Nigel Spink sat with us. I was totally starstruck, but also too young to really lap it up or remember it clearly now, which is a shame, imagine an everyday kid getting that access now.
My sisters still in touch with Brendan Ormsbys wife, poor Brendan has had a very tough time and is very poorly after a number of strokes.

Full closure of the M6 northbound junction 4 entry slip road.

Full closure of the link road between the M42 at junction 8 (southbound) and M6 northbound.

There is a limited train service on Sat, one an hour on the Snowhill line. There are trains running through Aston and Witton but won't be stopping before and after the match. At first glance this looks shit but when you think about it, a full service is inadequate so there is a H+S consideration with thousands trying to board the odd train.

Travel problems!!
My local team, Kefalonia FC, used to play in Division 4 of the Greek national league until we got booted out about 10 years ago.
We never knew what time a match would kick off. Depended on flights, ferries, weather and basically what time the opposition could turn up and if they bothered to turn up atall. All fans huddled in the capital center on a Sunday and waited for 'drums' to beat. That meant kick off in 30 minutes.
You lot have it easy. :)
-
Splendid stuff, Baldy.
-
Aye, there's always someone worse off but at least they get the best tale to tell when time heals the pain.
-
Aye, there's always someone worse off but at least they get the best tale to tell when time heals the pain.
Worse off, poor sods in Birmingham having to deal with crap transport and awful weather or a nice dip in the sea, a taverna a few drinks in the sunshine.
-
Yeah but the Kefalonians also have to rely on Ryanair and we know how you feel about them...
-

It should come naturally. 😁
-
Yeah but the Kefalonians also have to rely on Ryanair and we know how you feel about them...
Ryanair only fly in the summer. No international flights from November to end of April. Only three domestic flights a week from Athens.
That was the problem, opposition couldn't afford to stay in Kefalonia for many nights, if any!! They could be marooned. The few ferries running are not reliable in winter.
Kefalonians believe the league contrived 'to kick us out' due to logistical problems. However, the league will maintain we were kicked out because we didn't pay the €5000 annual subscription fee.
Who knows!!

We need 7 of the 9 points in our last 3 matches to stop another team gate crashing our European party.

We can do this, can't drop the ball now, Europe in sight, just one more bend to turn, massive game.
3-1 Villa.

Great stuff, and with that record Villa should be paying him to be mascot.
-
I think we'll get stuffed.
-
Carlos is starting this I think, Kons at RB. Will be interesting to break up the CBs given how brilliant they've generally been in last three months but Carlos had half an hour last week and looked fine and he hit one fantastic crossfield ball near the end.
The key to win this game is quickly switch play when Spurs lose the ball and ping balls wherever Porro should be as he's been hopeless at defending since they signed him.
We'll have some decent options on the bench tomorrow for first time this season as I think Kamara will start aswell.
Cash as high energy option for last half hour if he's available yet so I feel this will quickly descend into a chess type match and I'd certainly have our manager for that situation than Ryan Mason.
-
I think Emery would be mental to break the CB partnership on the final shit or bust game of the season. We've conceded 5 in the last 12. It's not broken, there's nothing to fix.

Hopefully a 2-0 win for us. Not as confident as I would have been a couple of weeks ago but hopefully Emery gets them back to the form we saw against Newcastle.
