Attacking team. Moreno starts as does McGinn, Coutinho and Buendia.

The line up is a very narrow and arrow shape. Let's hope we do penetrate through the middle.

We go on about our subs bench.  They’ve got 54 year Old Patrick viera on theirs.

Pleased with that line-up! The only thing I might have done differently would have been to start with Duran in place of either Coutinho or Buendia to give them something different to think about. Nice to see Traore back! UTV!

He'd still come on, waltz through our midfield, defence, round EMI and slot the winner.

Some signs I think Coutinho will score today. I think the line up is brilliant. Though I'm concerned on Cash and McGinn following instructions its good opportunity for them. Emery long team meeting will see all are aware what to do.

Ref Simon Hopper Aston Villa never lost at home in 7 times when he's been official.

Anyway, line up not bad, hope Duran gets on at some point though.

Can only assume the reason he's been out so long is because he was taking intensive Spanish lessons, maybe in Dublin.

Interesting hearing about expectations Purslow said its going to be a very busy summer.

Keown says from all clubs he was at that us Villa fans are the most difficult to please and unforgiving.

I sense that Coutinho will score today and cause them problems.

I would have like Duran to have started, but equally at the expense of who? Will be good to see Coutinho and Buendia together too.

To be honest, as someone who has been whinging about how thin the squad is - that bench is perfectly balanced and capable.

Let's just hope we don't pick up any injuries.

Looks very attacking. Where will McGinn play?

RM I hope. How to fit 2 x no.10s into a coherent setup remains the key challenge. Coutinho off Watkins and Buendia in off the left again I expect.

Bold selection from Emery. An important day for a number of players... Likes of Cash and Coutinho to turn around their careers at Villa Park. Moreno to deal with someone like Saka and establish himself at first choice. McGinn too, key player under Gerrard and a chance to remind us all of his qualities. High scoring game coming up.

Agreed. The fact that the media have not shut the fuck up about it all week, despite ignoring most other decisions that don't affect the "sky six", would suggest the the pressure is on the officials to 'atone' for the previous officials error...

The cross was "behind" Mings so there was virtually no chance he could head it out for a corner

Ginny made a good recovery tackle, but I have the impression he has been the weakest link in an otherwise strong team. He appears to be a little lost and can see how difficult it is for him to think about how to pass and where and when to position himself and press. I believe the rest of the team in 4-3-3 has performed admirably. Come on McGinn get going.

There really is this agenda in the media to complain whenever Villa do a bit of "game management". It cant be a conscious agenda, because its across all media platforms, & they arent going to simply decide they hate Villa, but it is noticeable from most commentators to bitch about our "game management", yet praise the opposition for doing it while calling it "clever"...

Good to be in the lead.

Arsenal will have heavy legs and not so many options to switch things from the bench so we need to get on the ball a bit and move them about.

Good at least we've got a manager who can run the game down with 5 subs, got some interesting options on the bench to manage this.

Saka finally sees something yellow from the Refs pocket.

Deserved.

He shouldn't be on the pitch in the first place.

That ankle stomp on Moreno deserved a straight red, no questions, straight down the tunnel to cry in the shower.

Its then doubly suspect because he should have at least got a yellow, at the very least, which would mean that the yellow he received just before HT would have been his second yellow, no questions, straight down the tunnel to cry in the shower.

So he should have been red carded on two separate occasions...

I wonder if the media & the officials in charge of the officials will have a week long bitch fest about how Villa have been fucked over? Twice.

Rhetorical question...

It's because Fulham, Brentford and Brighton are in equally good form. What's happening is the gap to Liverpool and Chelsea (plus Newcastle and Spurs, but they're miles away) is tightening. Keep going and all of a sudden we'll take a handful of positions.

Big ask though and need to get over the line here first. I remember looking at the the live league table when we were 2-0 up against Wolves with 10 mins left...

That's a foul on Cash for me, jumping above someone is fine but when you put your weight on the back of their head/neck to stay up it becomes dangerous.

Today feels different, and under El Maestro, this is a good opportunity for players to demonstrate what they've learned, even if it wasn't all the same team of players.
I'm hoping for a more 3-1 Manchester United home performance than a 2-4 Leicester performance in the second half.

Can you please stop with the El Maestro silliness. I beg you.

I know PWS is annoying when he ruins the action but that is a bit harsh.

There goes my Saturday!

There was literally nothing that anyone could do about that. Total and utter fluke.

Our defence is crap

We can't seem to get the balance right.

Arsenal play a few passes and suddenly they create large gaps and they're on the edge of our box. Shouldn't be happening given we have 4-5 CMs on the pitch.

We were just clinging on for a draw in the end bar the odd break but has a feel of season over with that late goal.

Do we ever score late winners or just there as a fucking jolly boys outing for other clubs to score late winners against? When was our last late winner? Man Utd away nearly 18 months ago?
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Arsenal Match Thread

Some might think it was a madcap game full of surprises, yet why am I not at all surprised? That was pure unadulterated Villa.
My biggest gripe in the game, and a lot of games this season is that we seem really cumbersome with pressing or moments where the ball is pinging around and it inevitably ends up with the opponents breaking on us. Too many slow players. Too many players with a poor touch (which is particularly evident with playing out from the back).

Yeah, we saw some good moments today, but the shit outnumbered it some way.

We've got the tough games out the way. We can't just concede that "it's City" or "it's Arsenal." There's no excuses in the next two.

I'm not convinced with this system defensively, and right now, though we look like scoring, we also look like we'll concede 2-3 (at least) every game and we can't play a side as monumentally shit as Leeds or Southampton (both of whom outplayed us if we're being honest) every week.

This is the true test of Emery coming. Gerrard started well and then couldn't arrest a slump and turn it around. We've got to be a bit more pragmatic. I think he needs to acknowledge that we're too easy to manoeuvre around, too open and that we're still exceptionally shit from set pieces (both ends). Maybe this will benefit us next season but the worry is that you hit a system and style all guns blazing and sink under it. Gerrards shitty narrow (and tactically naive) 4-3-3 system buried him. We're making the same errors on repeat, even putting aside the misfortune of their third.
