His own thread as he's been promoted to the first team.
Swinkels is a dutch 19-year-old and a part of Villa’s FA Youth Cup winning side and can play as a centre-back or as a left-back. He is thought to be highly rated by those at Villa Park, and ITK Ashley Preece has said Emery has given him a chance to impress alongside the first team on the training ground.
-
He won't baulk at that.
-
Preece isn't ITK.
Let's hope Swinkels does the business though. Good luck to him.

Swinkels Swinkels what a star
Better than van Dijk by far

He probably is for stuff like this because it only takes him turning up at BMH once or twice a week.

Wonderful!
Swinkles derives from des winkels, literally meaning "from the corner"
So he'll be good on set plays and Archie Mcphee will be encouraged for such an asset.

A timely thread given all the Sopranos chat. This dude was in a later series, right?

My only concern about Swinkels when I've watch the U21s is that he looks a bit slow, Bogarde (who is quick) has covered for him a fair bit. I think I'd have preferred to see Feeney involved but I guess this is because with Digne and Carlos injured the left sided defensive positions are weaker than the right.

Feeney is still only 17, and though already quite tall, I expect he's got quite a lot of growing to do (even if only bulking up a bit). He was on the tour of Australia, so is/was in and around the first team training already. He's clearly very well thought of, but I don't see him being called on for first-team action for a little while yet (unless there is some sort of injury emergency). I'm surprised with Swinkels, he didn't stand out in the FA Youth Cup winning team, but if the club have seen enough in training to have him in and around the first-team squad, then great!
I suspect it might just mean that with only 3 fit senior centre-backs, we need another youngster to join Seb Revan in ensuring there are enough defenders to make training competitive?

I know Feeney is younger but I think he looks a far better player and he was already making senior squads at Fleetwood before we signed him.
-
I've not been impressed with Swinkels when I've seen him. Bogarde's easily the better of the 2.
I saw something about Bogarde joining the first team squad too but I'm sure I read the other day that he had gone out on loan somewhere.
-
Bogarde is at Bristol Rovers, with Joey Barton.
-
Bristol Rovers, yeah that's the one. Didn't know Joey Barton was there though.

I am not a fan of Swinkels. He works hard, but he lacks mobility & has an error in him... Feeney, Smith & Bogarde are all potentially superior footballers & defenders...

Seb Revan is a LB. His brother Dominic is the CB. And we have already released him...

Perhaps Emery is having a good look at him in and around the first team squad to season end with Swinkels contract expiring.
See how he does and if he worth keeping/releasing?

On the bench today at Man City.
-
We know.
-
On the bench today at Man City.
Can he play up front?
-
He's not that good at the back, to be honest.
-
Given that Mings won't be joining the preseason tour, it appears that Swinkels will have another opportunity to shine as Pau Torres' backup. Now twenty years old, Sil agreed to a new four-year deal in May. It will be interesting to watch how he gets on in pre season tour and think he'll probably be loaned out this season.
-
Yes I think this is his now or never season now he’s 20. If he doesn’t impress in the US then it’s a loan and then if that doesn’t work out he’ll be the sacrificial lamb next close season
Hadn’t realised he is 6ft 3 but there again I hadn’t realised Feeney is 6ft 4! They both look like they need beefing up
-
Yep, Feeney especially is a bit Slim Jim.
-
Feeney is someone I think who will be sold on one day. He may orsy not make the Prem level grade but I don't think it will be here at Villa under Emery.
-
All the bits to Swinkey this evening.
Starting at center back.
-
Hadn't realised he missed an entire year with an ACL injury (was only back playing in April, which might explain why he's had no loans so far). So he's not only young, he's also missed quite a lot of development-level football.
Apart from the youth cup final a couple of years back, and the youth team that played Liverpool in the FA Cup, I've not seen him play. It will be interesting to see how he does. Fingers crossed he flourishes!
-
Swinkels right at the end twice let the ball bounce over his head -seem to have lost all concentration and focus.
The second time saw them score.
-
I doubt swinkels will play much unless a major injury crisis. But cant be too critical as that was a very make shift back four.
-
It's part of the learning curve , poor errors last night maybe tiredness was kicking in . I doubt we will see much of him and he clearly would benefit from a loan somewhere probably in League One to test him for 12 months .
-
As mentioned before, he was out injured for all of last season. Only came back in April. He's way down the list for getting any serious game time, but the odd run out here and there should help him get back to where he should have been before injury, and maybe he will get a loan deal the second half of the season.
-
I always saw him as one of the weaker players in the cup-winning team and then he suffered a bad injury.
All credit to him for coming back and getting some games.
-
Out of Swinkels and Bogarde, I always thought Bogarde looked the far better prospect.
-
I agree.
In addition, Bogarde is able to play in multiple positions, as has already been pointed out.
-
Emery said he wants Swinkels to get more minutes and experience first team football so he could be ready to come and play in matches. He's expected to go out on loan before the window closes.
Swinkels signed a new contract in November so he's another protected asset.

Loaned to Bristol Rovers...

Thank goodness. We have far too many central defenders at the club.

Yeah wonderful news. Who needs cbs
