Kick off Saturday 3pm 8)
COME ON!
Win here and its time to get excited again.
FTF

Win and fight for Europe ?
-
I think we are going to turn them over.. they will be focused on the league cup quarters on Tuesday night and they'll want everyone fit for that.
3-0 Villa and an Emery masterpiece.
-
Looking at this from a statistical point of view they would have to register 4 wins in a row to overcome us so that is unlikely for a poor side but they are on a roll so will be tougher than appeared a fortnight ago.
We blow hot and cold and probably will for the rest of the season, so everything points to a draw.

Our first team in the league has blown quite glowingly warm since Emery joined. I hope we can continue our very decent start. I’m going to go 2-0 to us.
-
They give us a much tougher game than would of been expected two or three weeks ago. We are, however, under Emery, a very tough nut to crack away from home.
2-0 us, Bailey, Ings.
-
It's Villa away under Emery! I have my sights set on a win! UTV!
-
Before winniing at Everton they had lost 6 on the bounce in the league. OK there are 4 cup wins amongst those but cups are irrelevant (well they are to us anyway).
-
First away of the season for me. Never seen us win at St Mary's. So far.
-
2-0.
-
Soton 0 Villa 1
-
0-2 away win.
Martinez
Young, Konsa, Mings, Moreno
Buendia, Kamara, Luiz,
Bailey, Watkins, Ramsey
-
0-2 away win.
Martinez
Young, Konsa, Mings, Moreno
Buendia, Kamara, Luiz,
Bailey, Watkins, Ramsey
Looks about right.
-
How is watkins injury wise ?
-
Also McGinn?
-
Martínez
Young Mings Konsa Moreno
Luiz Rolls Royce Ramsey
Buendia Bailey
Ings
I really dislike the Saints.
They still have the hump from that Merson battering and the 12 unbeaten.
The 6-1 still grates with me as that shouldn’t happen in any dimension in time and space.
One of my first matches taking my then fiancé we win 3-0 with them having Grobbelar in goal.
We’ve beaten them **just** when we needed to in the league and cup giving the managerial incumbent some breathing space.
That 4-0 last season was beautiful.
An Emery Masterclass sees us come back to B6 with the points.
-
Also McGinn?
Did a Grade 2 hamstring at Spurs on Jan 1st so out for at least a month, and he said recently it's a couple more weeks. If thats correct.
Maybe looking at Leicester home or Man City away.

Ta.

it is abit annoying they have hit a bit of form
They were awful there last season but then so were we
-
Dean Smith's last stand was away to Southampton on a wet night.
I saw these beat City comfortably in the Coca Cola Cup last week. Great win at Everton last weekend. Still they are bottom of the league. With all our injuries I really dont fancy us to be honest. Think our results have exceeded performances of late (Wolves, Leeds). Would really like to see Emery move us away from this 442 and not wait until half time again. Dendoncker will be back but Digne, Cash, McGinn, Watkins, Steer, Carlos, Bednarek all out (likes of Augustinson and Sanson may have left?). Id drop Konsa actually, give Chambers a go at RCB, see what he can do against his old club. Need a lot more from Ramsey and I guess the hope is both Buendia and Bailey are full of confidence after their goals v Leeds.
-------------Martinez
Young, Chambers, Mings, Moreno
----------Kamara, Luiz---------
Bailey, Buendia, Ramsey
-----------Ings
Subs - Coutinho, Konsa, Dendonker, Sanson?, Nakamba?, Olsen - real struggle to fill the bench
-
0-2 away win.
Martinez
Young, Konsa, Mings, Moreno
Buendia, Kamara, Luiz,
Bailey, Watkins, Ramsey
Looks about right.
Ings, not Watkins.

Where is the poll?
-
Where is the poll?
Please see the above.
-
Where's the pre-match scran?
-
I only found out what scran was the other day. My daughter and her fella were nipping out, I asked where and she said to grab some scran. I looked blank and her fella explained it was Roadman talk for munchies.
Ffs, I’m so not down with the kids anymore.
-
Where's the pre-match scran?
Please see the above. Part Deux.
-
If the poll was a Venn diagram there would be overlap between option 1 and 2. In any case it’s 3. We will beat those south coast upstarts
-

1-4
Continue with the excellent away form and pick of Soton

With all the food talk and my failing eyesight I read that as vegan diagram.

Vegans can't draw diagrams, they're too week from existing on grass and seeds, poor things.
-
There is a particularly vocal Southampton fan at work, any sort of win would suit me.
Our away form under Emery in the league is, of course, rock solid. 2 away games played, 2 wins.
Their last win before beating Everton on Saturday was against Bournemouth on 19th October.
-
1-3
Just the one brain fart of giving them a 25 yard free kick…
Kamara to get his first goal, one of the centre backs & Ings
-
a clean sheet please Villa and we will win....0-2 Coutinho and Ramsey.
UTV
The Doc
-
I'd be tempted to start with Coutinho on the basis he played his best game for us against them last season and scored loads of times for Liverpool on that pitch.
-

Me too. I think he'd tire them out mentally and then Buendia could come on and run rings round them,
-
2-0 to us would love Kamara to score but think it’ll 2 from Ings
-
Not sure about this one, they've looked decent recently. I'd love a top performance but reckon we might get the draw with a fair bit of sitting deep and shithousing.
-
My elder son's stepdad supports Soton. When we were promoted he rang me to offer congratulations - then in the same breath said we'd be going straight back down again. Yes, from a Saints fan, whom I have always seen as a Norwichy sort of a yo-yo side. Twat.
I'd love us to give them an absolute hammering, a cricket score to remind them of how shit they were under Hassenhuttl, rob them of their confidence and send them plunging into the Championship.
-
Anyone know of a decent place to park there?
Last time I went to St Mary's we had Pepe Reina in goal and that turned out to be a disaster.
Anyway win 0-2 Ings x2, somebody needs to tell Luiz not to give any cheap free kicks away around the edge of our box.
-
Thus fixture was Smith's last match in charge last season.
We need to improve our first half performances, because for the last 4-5 games they've been mostly dire. Still, we should have too much for Southampton. 0-2 to us.
-
The few Southampton fans I've come across down the years have been twats and I can't stand them either, so ending any talk of revival with a 4-0 win is in order here.
-
Nice options. Sure a draw comes under Aston Villa do not win? Superb.
Win. 0-2. Bailey & Ings
-
I'm looking forward to this I hope the trains will be ok I reckon another 2-1 win for us.
-
Them 0-2 The Villa
-
I'd be tempted to start with Coutinho on the basis he played his best game for us against them last season and scored loads of times for Liverpool on that pitch.
Not start Buendia even though he scored the winner last week?
-
Also McGinn?
He's off boozing in Dublin, after checking out the Book of Kells first.
-
I see everyone's predicting a comfortable win for us, which is usually a nailed-on guarantee that we'll play like a bag of shit and get humped.
-

Nope. My glass is definitely half empty.

We've started quite badly in all of the last 4-5 league games, but then have improved after the break in all of them. We really need to be much better from the start, as one ofthesegames, we'll go into the second half 2-0 down and then struggle to bet back into it. Southampton have been mostly shit, but are improving of late and we know that JWP can smash one in against us anywhere from 30 yards out or closer, so we'll need to be disciplined.

We were awful for the first 2 and a half minutes on Friday
-
I actually wonder if it may be a tactical thing to draw the sting out of the opposition for first 45 then turn on the heat in 2nd - bit dangerous if that is the case.
Agree that their biggest threat is from set pieces so we need to minimise what we give away around our area (yes im looking at you Luiz) and not give them 10+ corners like we did against Leedz
-
3-2 us. Ings with the winner
-

I think that was the intention against Spurs when we had 6 men behind the ball a lot of the time, but against Wolves at home we were just outplayed first half. The first 15 minutes it was just a question of when they scored.
-
3-2 us. Ings with the winner
With a muted celebration? Fuck it, we'll take it if it means 3 points.
-
We should be beating teams like this, and with the league being so tight this season we probably should not want to be losing it.
-
Bednarkek parent-tied? Shame. He's a good 17th man to have.
-
We are wearing black , I like the kit but we dont seem to win in it do we?
-
Another hoodoo to banish!
-
Southampton 1 Aston Villa 3
-
W5 D5 L21
Is their last 31 league games, a run which started when we stuck 4 past them back in early March.
-
They are due a thumping. An absolute wallopng!
-
Saints making a poorly timed recovery. 1-1
-
They are due a thumping. An absolute wallopng!
They're just about due for their biennial 9 goal twatting. Which would be nice.
-
Wouldn't it just, LFS!
-
Ollie is fit then! Dendonker back too.
-
1-0 Southampton.
-
We are wearing black , I like the kit but we dont seem to win in it do we?
Sample size is....one game? Arsenal away. We were shit but they were still itching for the final whistle and they would go on to win the league by 20 points!

Yes i was thinking black kits in general

This game will hopefully lay to rest the ghost of what separates us, still bottom half, and can't-beat-anyone-of-consequence-but-still-somehow-fifth sp*rs. This'll be our third game this season against a team in last place in the table. From those other two games we've garnered a massive one point. Lost to spam, drew with forest.
-
Win and we probably draw level on points with Liverpool or Chelsea (both 3 points ahead and playing each other Saturday). We are then looking at getting past Brentford, Brighton, and Fulham- we play all three in the final 7 games along with turned soft again Tottenham presently sitting 5th.
One of those 6 teams mentioned above will have a good run and we don't get past them unless we have an incredible run of results.
With a fair wind I think we could finish 6th this season - that would represent a return to the MON levels and finally putting to bed a 13 year hangover he left us with.
Maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic ? If we win on Saturday, would you bet against us ?

We weren’t properly managed in those previous games. What we have now is an improved squad with a clear plan. We are on the rise and a win here will be further proof of that.
-
Looks like Watkins is going to have to start.

I do like your optimism, but I fear we are not ready yet and far to inconsistent in our performance to make a play for Europe
Obviously, I hope I’m wrong, but a top half finish is where I think we’ll be
-
Looks like Watkins is going to have to start.
And if he's still injured, or rolls his ankle again, who plays up front? Do we play the false nine formation?
-

He's back fit and training ahead of Saturday anyway. Better option away from home anyway. Cover is light for sure, let's hope he remains a resilient sort. Not ideal having both Archer and Davis out on loan (not exactly sure if Davis is effectively gone). Would be ideal game time for Archer until end of season with us.
-
I wonder if Emery regrets allowing Archer out on loan now. Bailey needs to keep chipping-in regularly now with goals and Watkins just needs to start scoring full stop!

I doubt it, I expect the Ings sale was in the planning.
-
Maybe Keinan's coming home
-
Maybe Keinan's coming home
Yep - the medical staff have really missed him
-
Southampton fans have breathed a sigh of relief with Ings not scoring against them on Saturday.
-
On line links to Dembele? All I know is he played for Fulham previously
-
Looks like Watkins is going to have to start.
It's certainly looking that way. What a miss mess!
-
Maybe we will become the new Man City playing no actual striker 👀
-
False numbers 9 and 10. More bang for you buck.
-
Maybe we will become the new Man City playing no actual striker 👀
Let’s face it with Watkins, we’ve been playing that system most of the season

You don't like Watkins do you? You could have mentioned it.

Remember years ago Sir Ron played John Robson up front for one game. Fair to say he didn't do it again.

Riccardo Scimeca was the last emergency striker I can remember, he did alright to be fair

Jedinak away at Leeds in the Championship after El Ghazi got sent off. Quite a hilarious sight actually.
-
Didn't Big Chris Samba have a stint or two up top?

I'd completely forgotten this....I seem to remember The Jedi "made their defenders work"!
-
I suppose I meant 'picked to start' in the role rather than chucked up top for half an hour because of injury or desperation. Scimeca played a few games there if I remember.

He did indeed. Scored a goal once I think.

Sheffield Wednesday at home. We lost. I don't think he played again for us.
-
I think we will “ do a Villa “
Lose 1-0. And uproar that we should never have sold our top scorer.
Would also love to be wrong !!
-
Didn't someone on here play football at school with Scimeca and he was a striker at the time?
-
I think JJ could probably do pretty well up top if called upon
-
what about the Scottish lad just signed Pro , throw him in
-
I think JJ could probably do pretty well up top if called upon
He's never played as a striker in his life. Why do we always need to hope a player can do a job somewhere, rather than just going out and buying a good player for that position?
-

We're Aston Villa, we'll do what we want!

A centre forward is the most difficult position on the pitch and why many players that are excellent elsewhere often fail up front.

I think Buendia could play up front.

Been dicking around with ChatGPT today. It appears to have evolved further than Gerrard, but not quite reached peak Emery yet.
Write a team talk to inspire Aston Villa to win at Southampton, in the style of Unai Emery.
"Gentlemen,
We stand here today with an opportunity to make history. An opportunity to show the world what we are truly capable of. We are Aston Villa, and we are here to win.
When we step out onto that pitch today, we will be facing a formidable opponent in Southampton. They will be strong, they will be determined, but they will not be victorious.
We will be victorious because we are a team. We are a family. We are Aston Villa.
We will win today because of our passion, our determination, and our never-say-die attitude. We will win because we have trained tirelessly, we have prepared meticulously, and we have the desire to succeed.
We will win today because we are a team that never gives up. We will fight until the final whistle and we will come out victorious.
We are Aston Villa, and we will win today.
Let's go out there and give it everything we've got. Let's make history. Let's make our supporters proud.
Villa till we die."
Please note that the style of Unai Emery's team talk might be different from the above, this is a fictional representation of what a team talk from him could be like based on my knowledge.
-
dang so he's used that "we are a family" shtick before what a fraud

We've won 3 of the last 4 after a winless run of 9.

Remember years ago Sir Ron played John Robson up front for one game. Fair to say he didn't do it again.
Allan Evans arrived from Dumfermline as a striker. I'm sure he was thrown up front for the 2nd half of one game we were chasing and he scored a couple.
Maybe we should play Tyrone up front.
-
I'd gone 3-2 with Ings to win it. Revising that to 2-1 with a Mings stunner to win it.
-
My memory's terrible, so basically when I look back, all I can remember from games against Southampton is us losing to a shit team with players like Francis fucking Benali in it.
I can't stand the twats.
-
We should batter these. Should.
-

I can't stand the twats.
Always Matt LePiss scoring.
-
I've no idea why but I've got a sneaky feeling he'll play Coutinho today. I'd like to see him tinker it a bit and bring Cash back in, play Young at left back and Moreno further forward?
Anyway, I'll go for 2-2. Bailey and Ramsey for us.
-

But to be fair he was a great player. Id gone 2-0 with Bailey and Ings, swap Watkins for Ings. Was working and travelling with an Everton supporter yesterday, who said Southampton were dire against them last week, Everton stupid enough to give a free kick away just outside the box.
They have some confidence from last few weeks, but i reckon Emery will squueze the life out of them
-
Always dread this game. Will be tough I think.
Agree, Paul. I'm expecting a very tough game and we'll really need a big improvement from the Leeds game. Not every team are going to be so crap in front of goal. Both teams will fancy their chances today. Can't see beyond a draw, probably scoreless.
-

Nah, we’ll win so convincingly that by 5:00 pm their manager, Nathan Jones, will have packed his bag and walked slowly down the hall.

Yeah I think we need to control the game better and not give any free kicks to Ward-Prowse.

I hope for once you're right, Chris. I've been enjoying this recent Villa not ruining your weekend thing. It's something I could get used to.

To be honest I have no idea which version of Villa will turn up, I just wanted to get The Supremes reference in.
At our best, or close to it, then we should win as despite recent results their confidence will surely be fragile. If we allow them to get on top then it becomes much more difficult.
-
I think Buendia could play up front.
He’s small, weak and slow. It’s a no from me.

You've impressed me, Chris, I always had you down as more a Bananarama type of chap. I take it back.
Like you I'm hoping the new, shiny, lovable Aston Villa turn up today and smash Southampton so hard they end up somewhere across the channel.
-
They're fighting relegation, so we'll lose...
-
I think Buendia could play up front.
At a push he could be a number 10 feeding and feeding off the main striker. Up front on his own though? Terrible idea.

Great song. Gotta love The Supremes. Reminds me of The Sin Bin in Rebecca's back in the day.
-
Re JWP we don't want to give away stupid free kicks on the edge of our box, are you listening Douglas Luiz!
-
2-2. They've picked up a bit recently (always seems to happen by the time we play these sort of sides) and we haven't looked convincing defensively since the restart. Spurs away, I suppose. But they were dreadful.
