Title: Aston Villa v Stevenage - FA Cup 3rd Rd - pre match thread - Sunday, 4.30pm
Post by: Toronto Villa on January 06, 2023, 03:13:51 AM
It's only been 65 and a bit years since we lifted the cup and we embark on yet another journey. All kinds of odd sides have managed to win it in that time including the likes of Wigan, Bolton, Wolves, West Ham, Coventry, Wimbledon and Portsmouth. I just hope that we do it sometime soon again. Emery will have seen quite a bit of his squad now and hopefully will keep the changes to a minimum. Home against Stevenage, we should take the game to them and win without needing spot kicks. They are sitting 2nd in league 2, so they will have some confidence, and with nothing to lose and all to gain, will give it a go. We cannot fall into a trap of complacency.

So I'll be optimistic and say 3-0 to us - Ings x 2, Bailey with the third.

A loss in this one in this one and the pearl clutching on here will reach nuclear proportions but, for once, it will be entirely justified.

I am unable to attend because our annual awards night is taking place. It's black tie etc and I have gone to great lengths and expense to look the part so the least the Villa can do is put the same effort in and win the fucking game.

4-0

Really looking forward to this, feels like ages since we had a proper home 3rd round tie not Man Utd!!

Expect to win but would like to see squad players and some youngsters get time on the pitch.  Martinez has had a rest so should play, would like to see Bogarde get a game, Ashley needs a break, Digne can sit it out and let Augustinsson play, Luiz looked a bit laboured vs Wolves but was poss carrying a knock from Spuds game, Kamara also done a lot of work recently, Buendia has to be dropped and he is much better from bench if needed and Coutinho could do with 80/90 mins.  Assuming Ramsey will be fit and we need him to get time before Leeds game.   Hopefully good mixture of experience and kids on bench

Martinez
Cash Bogarde Mings Augustinsson
Dendoncker Sanson
Bailey Coutinho Ramsey
Ings

Olsen
Young A
Konsa
Feeney
Kamara
Buendia
Watkins
+2 of Raihky, O’Reilly, Young K and Wilson

Start with our strongest eleven available. After world cup break we need some continuity.

If we get a two or three goal lead, use the 5 subs asap.

This needs to be a jugular job.

Thank you, TV ! For kicking off the thread!
I'm also optimistic because Emery has a cup pedigree and his ambition matches that of the clubs to win a trophy.

Olsen in goal and Cash again at right midfeld aswell as starting minutes to several players. That's what I think Emery will do.

Olsen,
Chambers Bednarek, Mings Augustinsson.
Cash Kamara, Dendoncker
Coutinho
Bailey, Ings

3-0

I agree, however I don't see Emery doing anything along those lines. He will, I believe, rotate. As a result if that happens, the starting lineup he chooses will be a source of consternation for some but not me.  I have faith in him for every lineups he picks.

Including having Olsen as the cup keeper.
Maybe if it wasn't against a league 2 team at home, and the Leeds game is on Friday, so whichever way he plays, we should be able to use all five subs.

Have enough in the squad to comfortably win be it we start strong and then rest or be it a changed up starting eleven

He needs more football than just whatever FA Cup games are left. If we beat Stevenage we could get drawn away to Man City next, and then we're probably out. He's clearly not going to get ahead of Watkins, Ings and Bailey as things stand.

Chambers and Bednarek (if not recalled by Soton) will surely play. Might try Chambers in midfield. It's hardly worth risking Ramsey so surely one of our young guns is deserving of a chance.

I'd be surprised if Bednarek plays. If there's even a chance of him going back, they surely won't want him cup tied.

Would like to see Feeney start in defence.

We wore our away kit because we were the away team.  They switched the tie as you could do in those days.

I remember they should have had a penalty in the first 30 seconds then we went up the other end and scored.  I also remember at least one THFC flag in the away end.

I know, you're about the fifth person on this thread to tell me, but I believe that is as a consequence of it being scheduled for foreign broadcast.

"Stevenage Football Club’s Emirates FA Cup Third Round tie against Aston Villa will take place on Sunday 8th January at 4.30pm…

Boro make the 192-mile round trip to Birmingham to take on Unai Emery's Villans in the Third Round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup.

The fixture has been selected for extended highlights by the BBC, as well as live distribution overseas"

I'm looking forward to this, as it's our year. Got a ticket for the boy without having to move from what looks like is going to be a packed middle UT, which is nice. And a quick look at the weather suggests we might expect a dry afternoon. I fancy it'll be a frantic game early on, and I'm not even going to have a guess at our lineup, but I think we'll win to nil with more than one coming in the last twenty minutes.

Just out of interest, does anybody know how many they're bringing?

Correction to the thread title is required. It's not just Stevenage we are playing it's Stevenage Borough. The whole borough, consisting of 13 wards. (Shephall, Bedwell, St Nicholas, Martins Wood, Woodfield, Manor, Chells, Bandley Hill, Old Town, Roebuck, Symonds Green, Pin Green, Longmeadow)
So it's not going to be easy.

Some tough areas there.

Wouldn’t want to fuck around on Manor’s manor.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/stevenage/8689789.stm

They dropped Borough from their name when they got promoted to the league. A shame for me, at least it wasn't another Town, City or Utd (yawn)

Yeah, quite like that they're not called Borough any more, but it's still their nickname.

Martinez is the first world cup winner to play for the Villa in the 3rd round of the FA cup. What an honour for him.

And it looks like there will be 35K plus to see him.
Really? I think he should bring his WC medal and Golden Glove onto the pitch before the game to mark the occasion.

The commentary versus Wolves kept calling him by his full name for some odd reason.

Close to my team but Chambers for dirk

Would expect Bednarek for Mings too. Also be surprised if Bailey starts.
And actually Olsen is the Cup keeper.

But Martinez is the keeper that missed the 3 week block of training so needs game time to work with any changes that Emery implemented whilst World Cup was on

It's only been 65 and a bit years since we lifted the cup and we embark on yet another journey.

It will have been 66 years if we win it in May

1x8-74 = -66
1x9+57 = 66

It's definitely our turn to win it!  8)

I sure this has been mentioned elsewhere and I have been too lazy to find it - but 7 years without a win in a competition - surely that must be some kind of record.

Also - I have lived in my current house for the same period - so maybe its my fault

We did re-arrange the front room last week, so maybe that will break the curse

If we are going to break the curse we need to re-arrange Villa Park Feng Shui style. The old Trinity stand with terrace at the front, Holte terrace without roof, Witton terrace with dirt bank at the back, and a barrel roofed Witton Lane stand.
Of course we wont do it because Fred fuckin Flinstone will moan about there being 30,000 empty spaces every week.

Olsen, Young, Chambers, Bednarek, Augustinsson, Dendoncker, Nakamba, Ramsey, Sanson, Coutinho.and Ings...

This has got me thinking. We moved into our current flat not long after the 2015 cup final and we bought a new house yesterday. Logic dictates it was the flat holding us back all these years and a Wembley appearance awaits.

Only problem is we don't actually move until fourth round weekend ...

There weren't that many tickets left when I managed to log on a few hours after they went on general sale. Opted for front row of the north stand as the missus and I can each give our gammy 50-something legs a stretch

Ramsey

Yes, I agree. I would much rather start with a strong team, rather than have to bring on the stronger players as subs if things aren't going so well.

That's a bigger crowd than I was expecting given the opposition and it being on TV. Only 530 tickets left for the Leeds game.

Whats the protocol? When 4 goals up and there 3,000 realise their dream is over?

I have to say under Emery I'm uber confident we won't have a failing against a league two team at home. Doesn't seem the type.

Just a heads up that it will be several changes to the line up.
Emery has said.
"We are going to prepare for the match thinking the objective is to win the FA Cup, not now [on Sunday], but if we can progress then maybe."
Clearly has a team ready that isn't all first choice.
