Title: Brighton v Villa Match Thread

Very strange lineup. Hopefully he knows what he's doing.

EDIT: Hadn't realised there were illnesses in the camp, which explains watkins out and bailey only on bench

Not the line up I was expecting. Fingers crossed.

I’m surprised McGinn is in ahead of Dendonker and Bailey is on the bench.

Very odd selection. Is Watkins injured? Might even get to see Archer play for a change.

Sigh.

Ollie obviously picked up a knock otherwise he'd be involved and starting.

No idea why Bailey isn't starting.

Packed full of CMs. It's going to be another containment job as we haven't got much starting that can break the lines bar Ramsey and Buendia if he gets any of the ball.

Surprised Dendoncker isn't starting over McGinn.

Strange line up indeed. Mc Ginn? I don't get it.
Anyway Côme Villa.

There were comments on the twitter thread that watkins was sent home ill yesterday, similarly with bailey that he had been ill.

Apparently, Ollie and Leon fell ill yesterday.

I have no desire to see McGinn out there, hope I’m proved wrong. JJ and Buendia need to have big days today.

Fair enough then. We do seem to get a few sickness bugs in our camp, had some issues a few weeks back IIRC.

Bailey and Dendonk unfortunate not to be starting.
Obvs Kamara is a good replacement for that dcm role.
McGinn and Ings the worries for me.
Come on Villa boys and Emery 3 points please. UTV!

All these people think it's the line up that wins the game.
Under Emery he's about the collective. And that he'll introduce or change things when and where needed
Meaning it shouldn't matter who we put out under his mastery he has the strategy as well as ability to bring players on at the right time.
I be more getting the negativity if people so far were citing that  McGinn starts but they are instead suggesting the rest aren't good enough.
Let's see shall we.
And the five subs.
Emery hasn't shown much weakness in his selections so far.

Not sure about the line up but unlike previous managers I have more faith in Emery. I believe his changes are for a reason and not just random lets try this.

Ings can't play in a high press, hasn"t got the pace or stamina to close down as Ollie does and he isn't that quick on the break either. Reckon we'll set up differently and play a more defensive shape. 4-2-3-1?

Too bad about Ollie. I’d have preferred to have seen Leo instead of McGinn. But that’s what it is. Let’s hope for a better performance by him and we come out with a good result. We’ve done well down there in recent times. This will be a very tough game.

I'd take the draw, 4 from Utd and Brighton would be a good return.

7/12 from Brentford, Newcastle, Man U and Brighton is good given our season. 10/12 would be excellent. A base to build from.

I think Meatball is going to be pushed further forwards today. Let's be honest, if he can't thrive there then there isn't really anywhere else we can try him. Fingers crossed he has an absolute barnstormer today and pings one in off the underside of the bar. It's approaching the end for him otherwise.

He does apparently have an individual plan for each game so I suppose it may well mean changes regularly. I would imagine Watkins and Bailey would have played if fit and I’m thinking Ings and Buendia are playing instead.

Probably would have been pretty much the same team as last Sunday if there hadn't been illness, with just Digne coming back in.

Be interesting to see how we line up though and whether it will be the 4-4-2 on Wednesday with one of Buendia, Ramsey or McGinn in behind Ings or a variation of 4-3-3 with McGinn and Buendia in wideish areas.

That penalty came from another superb bit of vision from Emi and McGinn advancing into a position we’ve seen him for a while. That’s encouraging. But he still gives it away too much in possession in the middle.

Against Man U, it was all these little unenforced errors, like that from Mings to get booked, which totally handed over momentum and control of the game to them. I wish we could stay composed and just keep it simple where required.

Ramsey's been class so far under Emery, he'll really thrive under this manager.

I actually don't mind him starting out wide as its easier for him to drift into threatening positions in final third rather than from central areas.

Our problem is we can't balance it up on the other side with a direct wide player, hopefully Bailey is fit enough to contribute to decent chunk of second half when game is still level.

We need more players like Kamara in our side. They are out there for reasonable prices as we showed in finding him. And when you look at some of the players Leicester over the years or more recently Brentford or Brighton have picked up, we can do the same with the right philosophy from the club.

Mixed bag in that half.  We've had some really good moves and created some good situations, but some of the decision making has been poor and we've given the ball away easily far too often.

All said though, would have definitely taken being level at the break after that start.
Title: Re: Brighton v Villa Match Thread
Post by: Keeno on November 13, 2022, 02:58:35 PM
If you ignore the first 50 seconds we’ve been decent I think. Both teams press well so there’s a lot of hectic play between the defence and central midfielders going on.

Reacted to going down really well, nice touches and work off the ball from Ings in particular. Made a few really good runs in behind as well.

Kamara - class act. McGinn’s looked better in the more nuisance-causing role - as long as he’s not asked to dictate the pace of a game, he can still be a really good option I think.

Hopefully Bailey is feeling ok, I feel like if he can manage 20-30 mins he could win this for us second half.

Very annoying we couldn't get Bentancur signed up in January before Spurs showed an interest. Him and Kamara as the double pivot infront of back 4, wow.

When you get a midfield like that then you can seriously talk about qualifying for europe.

I think a pen for handball would've been pretty harsh, my bigger problem with the ref is the inconsistency of what constitutes a foul/booking. No yellow for Dunk for the pen and no yellows for March and Caicedo for similar professional fouls to the one he booked Mings for. I reckon you could show people who hadn't seen any of the game and say 1 of the fouls was given a booking and the Mings one would be 3rd or 4th in the list.

You can definitely see the beginnings of what will have to be a significant change in the way we've played until the last week or two.

Some of the players look like they might not have the ball-playing ability to adapt, but it's extremely early days - less than two weeks - and hopefully a month of work with the squad will bring us back after the WC much more schooled at doing what the manager wants them to do.

Mings got away with one five minutes before on halfway line when one of theirs turned him quickly so that was just a totting up yellow.

What's the actual rule with Dunk? Five years ago that would've been a penalty and red but think now it's only red if it's outside the box and a cynical foul.

I certainly wasn't calling for him to get a red but amazed he didn't get a yellow. Wolves had someone sent off last week v Brighton for a foul outside the box in a wide area so it''s another grey area interpretation of the rule.

I agree with all of the above. Emery is bringing his style to the team even if it has only been 2 league games. With an effective pre-season during the World Cup, I think the second half of this season could prove to be very exciting - particularly with sensible investment and players who can actually play to this style.

Matt Holland saying that SJM was looking for it, he is running at full tilt and gets cleaned out.

Even if he was, so what? If he tries to stay on his feet the ref doesn't give a penalty even if it's a foul so why wouldn't he wait for the contact and go over? This a refereeing problem and has been for years. If they're serious about stopping diving it starts with refs (and pundits, commentators and coaches) learning that you can be fouled without ending up on the floor.

We will need a couple of Emery style players in the window. But I’d rather long term see us commit to this kind of football than the shit Gerrard was trying to serve up.

Poor start.
Only Ramsey and Buendia look sharp in midfield. There should have been a pen for handball before Ings’ pen. What is the faxing point of var! Ref and Lino’s poor especially the Lino on Digne’s side. Need to improve after h/t.

Is 2 fouls really enough for a 'totting up' yellow card? Aside from that the ref normally sinals as much if they give one like that and he didn't today.

Ings needs to stohp going down the middle with his pens, he did it against Brentford and did the same today and was lucky the goalie didn't save it, but otherwise he's doing ok, linking up well with Emi.

Ings has scored with 10 out of 11 penalties that he's taken in the Prem.

He is obsessed with shielding the ball and spinning off his defender. It slows us down and takes his eyes off the pitch. It’s increasingly annoying in this uptempo style.

We need more players like Kamara in our side. They are out there for reasonable prices as we showed in finding him. And when you look at some of the players Leicester over the years or more recently Brentford or Brighton have picked up, we can do the same with the right philosophy from the club.

Very annoying we couldn't get Bentancur signed up in January before Spurs showed an interest. Him and Kamara as the double pivot infront of back 4, wow.

When you get a midfield like that then you can seriously talk about qualifying for europe.

Yeah I wasn't sure about Bentancur, thought he might be a little one paced and would struggle but from what I've seen he's a classy player and can do a bit of everything.

No one in this thread would be saying that wasn't a penalty if Dunk had connected with McGinn in that way.

That's the issue with having so few attacking players on the pitch now, our guys are taking 2-3 touches in our own box because it's just Ings on halfway line to hit up to.

Bailey coming on, he is going to be needed in last 20 minutes just for some counter attacks.

Clear pen I'm afraid.

We need to stop p***ing around at the back and actually clear the ball first time.

Lucky to get away from that.

Nah, can't give a penalty for that, remember March is the one making the tackle.

Amazed they haven't taken March off, he's offered so little down their right. Especially with Tariq Lampety on their bench. I'd be happy for us to sign him.

I have checked with my ultra scrutinising technology (eyes) and can confirm it was never a penalty.

Digne played the ball. Not like he meant to, but his touch still played the ball in the opposite direction to southern stripey. Not a penalty.

We had a penalty cancelled against these a year or so back that was far clearer than that and it was completley incomparable with the pen we got today.

Never a penalty. Pundits only say it’s a penalty if there’s contact when it suits their agenda. Digne did make contact but it wasn’t a foul.

De Bruyne got one just last week for hardly any contact, I'm amazed they didn't suggest to ref to go to the monitor given Digne kicked through March to eventually clear the ball.

We got away with one there.

There's absolutely no way our performance deserves 7 yellow cards, fucking joke referee.

YESS!!!!! GET IN!

Brilliant. Big call to go so defensive, we rode our luck a bit, but worked hard for that. Excellent stuff Villa.

7 Yellows - hardly a blood and thunder natch.

Expect we'll be on the Prem's naughty step for that number of bookings.

That Argentinian in the Brighton team is as bland as they come. How on earth is he going to be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Messi?

Well played John McGinn!

Yeah he's in and Buendia isn't. Figure that out...

Seems almost par for the course this season- all the extra substitutions must be part of the reason?

This is why I'm ok with the idea of stopping the clock and playing an hour of the ball in play, gets rid of all the arguments of how much time is added and decentivises time wasting.

Agreed
