the right decision. Let's go out to try to win this game. No fear. Newcastle's side is very confident but is't filled with superstars. We can certainly get something from this game. Good to Digne back on the bench.

Post by: gpbarr on October 29, 2022, 02:07:37 PM
Tough game today but like the line up and more important than the result (today) is an assured performance that gives us hope last week wasn’t a one off. If we go down by the odd goal up there given their form, but show we can compete, fair enough - a win would be a huge bonus really.

With Unai landing Monday, we are on our way back.

More of the same, please, Villa. Can't argue, none of the five subs last week came close to doing enough to oust any of the starting eleven. If we get an early penalty, let's make sure we score it, eh lads.

Clear pen.

They've really exposed Young on that side. Other than that we've been solid.

Ollie though...so many moves break down at his feet and he generally has air of someone who isn't awake half the time on the pitch. He won't be a regular in six months.

Disappointing as I've generally been happy with what I've seen this half from us. Now Newcastle will be the ones endlessly timewasting in the second period.

It's obvious we were playing for a 0-0.

Interested to see how quickly before Danks makes changes today. Last week was as easy as it gets at top level in managing a game.

It's a long way from being over. However don't make any changes until it's 2-0 and difficult to see us getting anything.

With the concussion sub we still have five options available to us so use them.

Losing one of our best players to injury seems to be something we do every other week these days.  Frustrating as hell.

For all the love-in commentary, Newcastle are bog standard from what I can see. They have one tactic, which is to get inside Ashely Young.  We are still too wasteful in good positions.  We need a killer centre forward - I'm sure Emery will see that and sort it out in January.

Luiz was great in that half aside from losing the ball on the edge of the area right before the penalty.  Looks a really good player at the moment.

The general set up has been ok, we seemed to get on top of them in the middle of the half.

Watkins seems finished. No confidence, very poor touch. I’d get him off for any of McGinn, Coutinho or Ramsey.

Ash is finally showing his age.

Bizarre their fans booing the Emis for injuries, especially since neither injury stopped play in an attacking position for them?

I thought we were ok for much of the first half, until we get into their box and then it all peters out cheaply. All of our front players are slow to react to the break of the ball, or choose a poor pass.
We need better quality.

A shame about their pen….I think Dougie should hold his hands up for that…he won the ball in the build up and lost it very cheaply which led to the pass/cross

3-0.  At least it keeps the commentators happy.

It's been really poor from us for half an hour.  Buendia especially has been really really poor and powder puff, like a few others out there.

The only difference between these two sides is organisation and fitness.  They've looked stringer all the game through.

Anyway on to bigger and brighter things...  The next time we play these ****** we will have a top manager in the dugout.

They’ve got no nonsense defenders, a really good right back, and forward players who are sharp, and can take and create chances.

They’re also confident, and well coached.

We’ve lost a year under Gerrard going backwards (or at least not forwards) on pretty much every measure.

Newcastle have a very defined plan on how to play and they’ve stuck to it for a good while. We went from Dean Smith’s traps, to Steven Gerrard’s look me in the eye and roll up your sleeves plan to handing the reigns to two blokes who have nothing to lose but do their best. It might get uglier under Emery before it gets better. But at least it will be a plan he will want us to adhere to and learn. Our players look fucking awful and lost.

We're rubbish away from home. That's on Gerrard for wasting so many winnable fixtures already. Tough ask for Emery to turn things around when we've still got to play both Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs all on the road.

3 wins from first 6 at VP is decent though so that's something to build on at least.

My opinion is based on watching them many times for the last 3 seasons and a bit seasons. We make some unbelievable individual mistakes and still have issues keeping the ball and making use of it. Defensively we shoot ourselves in the foot so many times and have done under Smith, Gerrard and now this game under a caretaker coach. Have we been terribly coached for 3 and a bit seasons or are a few of the players we have shown they just aren’t up to this standard? We’ll see I suppose but I’ll stick by what I’ve said.
