Post by: Bad English on August 17, 2022, 01:39:34 PM
3pm. Sat 20th August at Selhurst Park.

Let's get predicting! 1-3 to the mighty Villa. Palace might have got a point at Liverpool but we will funeral them.

Buendia starts = win. He doesn't = not win

He'll start.

1-2.

Whens the last time we beat these away two seasons in a row? Serious question if anyone knows?

They’ll be in a high after drawing up at Anfield, but they’ll be expected to play a different game against us and attack more. Could be a trick afternoon and i’d take a draw, which wouldn’t be a bad result.

Head says 1-1 (Ings).

Heart says 2-1 (Ings, Watkins).

Think it might be same team as last Saturday other than Chambers for Carlos and Beundia for Coutinhio

I'd play:

Martinez

Cash
Chambers
Mings
Digne

Kamara
Luiz

Ramsey
McGinn
Buendia

Watkins

I don't think we can afford to play Ings away from home as he isn't mobile enough. I'd tell JJ, SJM and Emi to buzz around - don't give them a second on the ball - and have Doug and Bouba to mop up anything they miss. We can't sit back, we have to win the ball back early and drive forward at pace. If we dominate the midfield, we'll win. Watkins just plays on the shoulder of their last man and looks to run in behind. Then we have Coutinho, Ings, Bailey and Archer to come on in the second half if we're chasing the game. Which we won't be, because this team will smash them.

Never. We've won there something like 4 times in over 20 visits.
Conversely, they've won at VP 3 times.

And if anyone wants to feel old, it's nearly 8 years since we won there with that Benteke goal.

We need Boubs to do a job on Eze, Cash to knobble Zaha and Ollie to harass Anderson

1-0 to Villa, Emi2 to start and score.

Buendia needs to start.
This game will be won or lost by how well the midfield performs. With McGinn and Ramsey in there I don't think we'll have quite enough. Frustratingly a Villa loss for me.

I think this game sets up nicely for us. Both teams play better on the counter. Palace proved that at Anfield this week. But being asked to play on the front foot when at home for me gives us the slight edge. They have some dangerous players so we will need to careful about that. But I think we come away with a 2-0 win. Buendia and Bailey with the goals

The match up between Mings and Wilf Zaha will be compelling.
I believe the game itself will be most physical, so discipline will be essential.
Ings gets a 1-0 win to keep his scoring streak going.

I have watched Palace in both their opening games and was quite impressed. Starting off with Arsenal and Liverpool is tough so I hope they relax a bit and think we would be easier. This is going to be a tough game and could be won or lost by Zaha either being a twat or genius.

I'd quite like to see Bailey with Watkins at some point, pace and Bailey can finish

One of the best performances last season under Gerrard when we went and won comfortably outplaying them.
I think would be something similar though with a higher threshold for physical challenges can balance game out.
Still think we will beat them we're been very good away from home generally with Gerrard as he sets it up just right.

Well yes I think reasonable rather than very good then. But also it's good signs from last season.
In fact 12 matches away from home  under Gerrard last season we won 6.
And drew 1 so over half the matches we did not lose so that's reasonable away form all things considered.

Bournemouth was a blip and can get funny results start of the seasons against a promoted side.
We were undefeated all pre season. All away matches.
Of the last two prem matches then away under Gerrard
We were 2-0 up against Man City and were very good for the majority.
And before that comfortably beat Burnley who were fighting for lives.
I think we have shown decent tactics and performances in these away matches particularly.
I would reiterate that the Palace away match first half was a commanding performance.
No reason not to show that again.
We're a better side now too.

I know what you mean. However with just one point so far and Citeh away next, the pressure will really be on them to get a win from the game, so the first goal could be more key than usual.

If we play Buendia and Bailey either side of Watkins then we have a chance. The possession based slow passing game of the last 2 games won’t work. For me, this suits our squad much better.

We went 1-0 up with Coutinho on the pitch last week, and scored the second when Buendia replaced him. Similarly we were shit against Bournemouth with Phil playing, and remained just as shit when Emi came on. The idea that we do or don't have a chance depending on which one of them plays isn't true in my opinion.

That's good to hear for value gamble if anyone feels confident in backing us.
I'm utterly convinced we'll win with the right selection. Its a feeling.
Last season we outplayed them away and I think SG will know exactly who to set up with and the game plan to beat them. I find Palace still quite predictable and unable to hold the ball much so they could be turned over in transition.
But I can understand why people may feel less confident in playing them though they haven't won a game this season.
And were second best at home to Arsenal and couldn't beat 10 man Liverpool when leading.

Up the Villa.

Everton and Bournemouth threw 10 players behind the ball, exposing our lack of creativity. The thing is - Palace won’t do that as they’ll fancy their chances against us - which actually suits us well. So long we are solid at the back (that’s a big if) this game should suit us.

But he’s got to get pace into the attack so we counter quick - that for me means he must start Ramsey over Luiz, Buendia over Coutinho, and Bailey into the game somewhere (perhaps 2nd half).

Martinez
Cash
Chambers
Mings
Digne
Kamara
McGinn
Ramsey
Buendia
Ings
Watkins

Horses for courses and picking players that are right for the match
He had Leon in the  Bournemouth away match and he had an excellent pre season he can just as well be as successful as any other we start and has the blistering pace to add to the attack.

I think we'll end up with more of the ball than people think,  because they will let us.  That utter cheating prick will score for them,  I'm sure he's a nice bloke off the pitch but no player infuriates me more than Zaha, even when they are playing other teams.  Niggling,  diving,  cheating,  sledging through the game,  on at the ref all the time.

I'm going 2-1 Palace,  and much frustration.

Special little fixture this, as the last time I could travel north to see the lads was Selhurst 2019 pre-Covid. JG denied a clear pen, wrongly booked for diving, our away fans nearly jumped the fence at the iniquity of it.
Team that day included Wesley, Lansbury and Neil forgodssake Taylor.
Other Reasons to be Cheerful now: they've lost a Gallagher; we’ve gained a Kamara.

When I used to go regularly I parked in Ecclesbourne Road in Thornton Heath outside Bensham Manor  School. About a 15 min walk from there. That was about 10 years ago mind so not sure if it is still possible. Might be worth looking on google maps. I assume you will be coming in "the right way"  for it from the M25 and the A23.

Anyone have suggestions for car parking. Please.
Usually best to reverse in to your space.
And the two yellow lines by the kerb are there to help you align your wheels correctly.

Thanks

We ain’t winning this one. Midfield to be a shambles, Tyrone booked about 15 mins in for clash with Zaha, Buendia comes on when we’re 2-0 down and we bag a late consolation on 92 mins.

Well, your version of events can't happen now! :)
