That’s a cracker mate

This is the kind of quality preview that the mainstream national media lacks when it comes to club season previews.
Setting standards for the season with a great write!
Thank you
I've already sent link to non Aston Villa followers who are curious to how we are looking . Think these observations and words are great!!
Up The Villa.

Done.

Good read and completely agree with the last paragraph.
-
Yep, it’s about time.
Good article.

Excellent stuff Dave.

100% spot on Dave

Perfect analysis Dave - but it needs proof-reading before posting.

"Yes, I am bitter and mean-spririted." - Trying to think who left this summer that was a clown?

Great, insightful read Dave.
As usual.
Fingers crossed for progress this season.

I argue.

Exactly. No more of this '10th would be progress' nonsence. We need to be pushing for 7-8th at the very least. We have an enviable squad. Leicester and Wolves are on the wane. Brighton, Southampton and Palcace can't compete financially. Time to think big.

Great read Dave.
-
Very good assessment and to the point- no more accepting mediocrity
-
Well done dave - great read

Chukky
Of course - had already forgotten about him

Good article Dave. Personally think a solid 8th - 10th place finish would represent progress. By solid I mean we are consistently in the top half throughout the season and not like the Houllier season where we flirted with the relegation zone before eventually finishing 9th after a good late run.
-
8th would be decent, 10th would be extremely underwhelming.
-
Great read Dave.
Thanks Daz.

Agreed. I do wish the Guardian/Observer would give Dave a call rather than the same 'happy to be in the PL' Villa fan they use every bloody time.
One of your best, DW.

I'd say 1st/2nd is way out of reach for most bar the current top 2. 3rd is almost impossible given how much we're trying to catch up. 4th/5th is a target (if we had a blinder and kept everyone fit). 6th/7th should be achievable. 8th should be just about the minimum. 9th is improvement but disappointing. 10th -13th is unacceptable. 14th or lower would be an absolute disaster.
Given what Leicester did, there's a chance, if our squad click that we could do it. We've got strength in depth everywhere and one or two are due a breakout season. A strong start builds the belief, and with that energy, our wealth (if we need to strengthen in January to maintain our push for the Double), anything is possible.
We have one of the best goalies in the league. We've signed a centre half from one of the best defences in Europe. We've signed one of the most promising defensive midfielders, and a permanent deal for one of the world's best attacking midfielders. In our strikers we have promise, youth, experience and speed. And all that backed up by internationals from Poland, England, France, Brazil, Argentina, Sweden, Scotland.
-
Thats the spirit Dummond. I've been banging this drum on the expectations thread for ages and keep reading '10th would be progress' or similar.
I'd be happy enough with 8th as I think West Ham are well sorted and will be difficult to overtake. But anything lower and we'll have underperformed in my opinion.

Thirty odd years and better than ever. I don’t know how you do it Dave.

Thanks

30 years of hurt doesn't sound so good !!! Are you the albatross on the ship dave ?

As always a very good read Dave. 8 -10th with a cup run would be a solid season for us and offer a springboard to get another 1 or 2 higher quality players next season to help push for top 8.

No offence but that's the sort of thing I was pointing out. With our investment and with all the advantages we claim to have, we can't keep saying next season we might finish eighth.
-
I liked reading this because I agree with you ( which always helps in appreciation of an article) that Villa need to finish 8th+ at least, this season. Also, that it looks as if we might have some exciting and effective players in Kamara and Carlos to add to the youth coming through and the wonderful talent we have already, to make this an expectation rather than a wistful dream.
‘8th+‘, where the + means getting better, like 7 th, 6 th, 5 th...
-
For Gerrard, the owners and the fans, this season has to be special in the context of our recent history. The debate is what ‘special’ in that context means. It isn’t scraping 8th for me.
-
We need things to go our way a little bit - tactics, injuries, good form, stability, etc. But if we do have one of those seasons, why couldn't we win a Cup and finish in a European spot in the league? If it goes our way, this could be a brilliant season.

I agree, as the title implies now is the time for dancing in the street.

Lets hope it's to the Martha and the Vandella's version, not Mick and Dave.

Blimey, I’d forgotten they massacred it. Thanks for reminding me!

I like it. No more no more mid table consolidation or look where we were 3 years ago. Time to go for it. Exciting times.
-
Agree. This is the season to kick on. 7th or 8th is an ambitious but not unrealistic aim.
