This one looks like it’s going to happen. I know nothing about him except he’s a ‘wonder kid.’ And he’s leaving the ‘Gers to join us.
-
Welcome, Rory. If he can be brilliant for Villa and Scotland, that would be nice.

Hear, hear, but he would still only be the second best Rory associated with the Villa. :)
-
49 goals in their youth set up last season augurs well....
-
Sounds like Rangers playing hardball over fee so will go to tribunal

8 goals in 11 for Scotland under-17s, too.

I can see why. We'd be pissed off if he was leaving us for peanuts too I guess
But sounds like a good prospect, we've done well to attract him.
-
It’s going to be interesting what happens with our U23s this season. They have to find a new manager to replace Delaney, and you have players like Brad Young and the older Chukwuemeka who have done really well at the academy but haven’t done well in their loan moves.
Finn Azazz has had two full seasons in League Two and done really well in both, I can’t see him playing in the academy or fighting for a first team place yet. And now Wilson coming in, will he be loaned or spend a six months or a season in the U23s so we can assess him.

This is odd for Villa - most clubs from whom we've signed youngsters recently have been very complimentary about how we've handled negotiations etc.
Still, if we can't reach agreement, then a tribunal it is.
Just hope it doesn't sour things if we/when we are trying to sign Calvin Bassey.

I'm sick and tired of these people stealing my name.

I think Rangers want to save face and don’t want to be seen to be losing their players so easily. After all, they are the most successful club in world football…

All agreed.

Best change it to Ruairí, or Ruaidhrí just to be on safe side. Can't see us signing anyone from "Rangers" with that name.
-
Will he usurp our Louie Barry? I hope not, he's Villa!

I'll just give myself a few extra names: Rory Collins McGuinness Scott Brown O'Fenian. That'll work.

fee now agreeded at 350 thousand pounds plus add ons
-
I know he’s very young but that seems cheap. How much did we offer and how much did Rangers want? Seems mad that is the result of the tribunal.
-
We offered £349k, they insisted on 10,000 crates of Special Brew and three lorryloads of union jack vests, so we split the difference.

Looks like we've got better poker players/lawyers than Gers.
-
Decent explanation of what the argument was about in The Athletic. Surprisingly it doesn't seem to be paywalled, or, at least, it wasn't for me. The article is from before we reached agreement. Presumably Villa are happy getting him at a low fee, though perhaps not as low as it might have been if we had won in court, and they're happy to avoid setting a precedent that could avoid more young players getting poached at low fees by Sassenach teams.

No Irn Bru?
I always thought that was a myth until I had to go to Glasgow for work. I popped in a Gregg's (I know) and they had the usual drinks chiller, then a second which was probably 80% full of that orange stuff !
-
He's signed. Another one to stick on the big pile of promising young strikers.
-
Welcome Rory.
-
He looks like one of my Y10 kids.
-
Can we sign someone who's of an age to actually play next season please?
Very worried about the lack of serious transfers, looks like it's going to be more of the same as we struggle to offload big money signings who nobody wants , frustrating
-
I know. We haven’t done that yet have we? It’s very, very concerning that nobody has signed for us except this kid. And the window closes next week.
-
He's here all week/month/season!
-
Looks a decent bit of recruitment. Quite chuffed with the way we're quietly and efficiently hoovering up talent
-
It'll be interesting to see how he progresses. Welcome Rory.

Yeah first time I went to Scotland and went into a supermarket and was greeted by stacks of 24 pack Irn Bru. Who buys any soft drinks in 24 packs!!
Anyway welcome Rory

I don't care!!
I'll stand by my principals in wanting a fairer society for our fans.
Those in zone 6 were targeted
Coutinho was already with us and to be honest was he even that good towards the end of the season? Digne looks like he will spend a lot of time on the injury table and the new additions could go either way.
If we're going to be increasing prices in the way we have then at least we deserve is better performances than those at Villa Park last season
-
Man the barricades comrades and lets spend billions on footballers wages.

Well, who says we won't! You may be pleasantly surprised.
I'm really looking forward to the season, I think we have the potential to have a really good one if idiots like me don't curse it.

Welcome to Aston Villa Rory.

Good luck to you all the best, be a Villa hero, in the not to distant future

Yep, I, at the very least expected a guarantee of a top 4 position and a cup for the increased outlay just like other clubs do.
-
Another welcome addition to the youth ranks. We seem to be doing very similar to Chelsea and Man City.
They spend big on star players, but also try and get good youngsters too. The number of players they sell, for multiple millions, that I've never heard of suggests they are investing in the right places. I'm all for it, particularly with what we've seen from the players coming through of late.

I doubt very much you give a shite about those in zone 6. If you felt that strongly about it, you wouldn't have re-newed on principle. You're just a troll.
-
How dare you say I don't give a s**t about those in zone 6 , I reluctantly renewed out of loyalty and to justify it I have made a couple of lifestyle changes.
I was absolutely disgusted at the increase to those in the cheapest seats. it was a direct attack on those less well off and families at a time when every penny counts

Then take it up with the club. Continuing to bleat about it on here does no good at all, especially on a thread about a young and upcoming striker. It's pretty pathetic of you really.

Well said.

Flin - those in the cheapest seats still have the 10th cheapest seats in the PL. Not too bad really for a club aiming for top 6 and about to invest 100m+ on a new stand. They could go and support Wolves but it would cost them more.

Workers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your 4 home wins of the season, not beating Man United at home, getting schooled by Brentford, and another season in the bottom half!
-

Unless Villa carry out some sort of means testing, what's the betting that a significant portion of those enjoying the cheap seats aren't actually the poorest among us? I wonder how many of them got a windfall or a promotion and then gave up their cheap seat for a full whack one so someone else could go?
-
So, anyway, Rory Wilson? Good luck and be brilliant please. If you hear any Villa fan shouting "yabba-dabba-zone 6", best just to ignore them.
-
Just imagine this lad becoming a hotshot Premier League scorer, banging in the goals, the thread growing to 100+ pages and then looking back at the origin of the thread to see the thread being dominated by moaning about not spending on first team players and ticket prices.

Right last one from me.
I'm sure we'll all be thinking the same thing at the opening home game.
"Wilma new season card work at the turnstile?"
-
I think I preferred the tedious arguing about Zone 6.
-
Imagine a fresh faced, eager young Rory Wilson thinking "I'll have a look around the internets and see what the Villa fans are saying" and coming across this thread, undergoing the now inevitable Wilmageddon phase every thread must these days.

In 10 years time you'll see one of those "Where are they now?" articles on hot prospects of today, and there will be the sorry tale of Rory whose career was ended before it begun, burdened by the guilt of believing his good fortune in his dream move resulted in the senseless massacre of the zone 6 pricing category.

Absolutely, it put me off looking at this thread. Anyhow I believe they love the attention anyway.

sad I know but I sometimes go to the beginning of threads out of curiosity , quite interesting to check out the optimism or the

Rory Wilson enlisted at the age of 16 for what?
Allow the lad to grow in Scotland.
This incessantly purchasing of young players is getting over done.
Otherwise, it's no surprise that players believe the hype and expect too much too soon. In a few years we have the same situation we're having with Chukwuemeka.

I hate to break it to you but 16 is quite old to be enlisted/recruited.
-
You buy young players in the hope they get better so you can play them or sell them. If you wait until they reach their potential every man and his dog will want them.
Footy mentioned Chukwuemeka but failed to mention the recent long term contracts signed by Ramsey and Iroegbunam.

Otherwise, it's no surprise that players believe the hype and expect too much too soon. In a few years we have the same situation we're having with Chukwuemeka.
At the same time, you can see that Chuk already wants out at the raw age of 18, so at what age are we supposed to be recruiting youth then?
I would much rather have a young player come through our academy system and be introduced to the first team (and our expectations as a professional) at an early/ier age.
-

Footy mentioned Chukwuemeka but failed to mention the recent long term contracts signed by Ramsey and Iroegbunam.
Its a business model and they call it club's ambitions for their youth sides, Purslow said: "The ultimate goal is to populate the under-23 team with 11 outstanding 16, 17 and 18-year-olds, then I will know it’s working."

These clubs can sign them, fail them or sell their talent.
By making unmet promises and having high expectations of young men, you can damage their careers and well being and all they do is end up in League Two.
Some will just settle for that league or some will rise up again even as squad members higher up the leagues but only few will become elite.
Wilson could easily get home sick and that would be a waste all round.

That just doesn't make any sense, though?
Are we to completely abandon prospecting and signing young talent because we have high expectations or unique, unforeseen circumstances pop up?
I genuinely have no idea what your point is, or how this mindset would help the club?
-
Been hanging out with flinty i reckon

I think the point is to create a strong academy and to be able to promote as many of them as possible into the first team, thus saving huge transfer fees. If some players don't want to stay, you sell them, hopefully for more than you bought them for.
Look how many academy graduates chelsea have either in the first team or sold for tidy profit.
I know it's off season and people are bored but some of the complaints on here recently have been pretty staggering. We currently have super rich owners who seem to be doing their best and for some people it's still not enough to be optimistic and desperate to pick any kind of hole in it.
Cheer up lads

You make it sound like a sink or swim option. It’s not. He will have all the support and more to make it as a professional and he still may not. Player welfare, particularly for the young and away from home will be a major consideration. I doubt they’ve lifted him from the wilds of Scotland and dumped him into student type accommodation on the outskirts of Birmingham. Most likely there’s generous assistance available for his family. You can’t not do something just in case some poor soul might suffer rejection.
-
Rory Wilson enlisted at the age of 16 for what?
They've taken him away from "Rangers", his lot in life can only improve.
-
To be honest, in principle I agree with Footy. I think acquiring players to loan them out, rather than allowing them to become stars at their own clubs, is fundamentally the wrong thing to do. What hope does a club like, for example, Exeter City have if whenever they have a half decent player come through the ranks, some Premier League club comes along, snaps them up, then farms them out on loan for however long on the basis of a 2% chance they'll make it.
But, *not* doing that is basically suicidal for your youth team, and in FFP terms it's one of the few ways clubs like ourselves can work the system to our advantage. Especially because if we don't sign the player, someone else will ... and then farm them out on loan.
The idealist in me hates how the loan system works, and thinks it's detrimental to the game outside half a dozen or so clubs in the Premier League. The pragmatist in me realises that we're one of that 'half dozen or so' and we'd be mad not to do it.
-
To be fair, you have to assume the standards, equipment, expertise, medical, and coaching set up at academies like ours are better than the majority, so there’s an argument to be made that it helps the kids make the most of their abilities too.

Don't forget though that most clubs are happy with how we go about it and when we pick up someone from a club like Exeter the fee we agree is enough to pay for their entire academy for at least a year.
-
These clubs can sign them, fail them or sell their talent.
By making unmet promises and having high expectations of young men, you can damage their careers and well being and all they do is end up in League Two.
Some will just settle for that league or some will rise up again even as squad members higher up the leagues but only few will become elite.
Wilson could easily get home sick and that would be a waste all round.
So we should leave the young players in the lower leagues, in case they don't make it and end up playing in the lower leagues?
And what promises do you think will be made to them, besides paying them the agreed rate for the length of their contract and playing them if they turn out to be any good?
-
How good is Rory Wilson? - genuine question.

He’s one of the best in his age group, judging by the goals, but we will see how he gets on next season in the U23s as it’s a big test.

Yeah, I agree. I think we’ve gone about our business in the right way, and I’m certainly not complaining about it. You have that other side of the coin, of course, where it’s at least allowing the trickle down money to get to clubs in the rest of the league structure, which is better than it going elsewhere.
It’s complicated and on any given day I’ll contradict things I’ve said about it before half a dozen times or more!

I keep seeing lot of traffic on Louie Barry thread. Wondering where are we with Wilson in the scheme of things in peckish order of strikers or being loaned.
Younger but high potential signed by Gerrrad.
I think hes still really just developing and will be a season or so if he gets any first team squad call ups.

I think Brad Young is the one we'll look at if we get injuries. I'm not sure if he's anything like good enough, his youth record is good but he's struggled on loan.

Rory Wilson enlisted at the age of 16 for what?
Allow the lad to grow in Scotland.
I hate to break it to you but 16 is quite old to be enlisted/recruited.

Yes, why should we bother with that youth development malarky because it might not work?!?
Lets leave that sort of nonsense to clubs like Chelsea... ???
-
How good is Rory Wilson? - genuine question.
Currently, he is still raw because he is only 17. But his goalscoring record with Rangers, Scotland & Villas youth & reserve teams is ridiculously high for a kid when he was playing at the ages of 15-16 year old in ages groups of u18 to u21. He has scored around 50-odd for Rangers youth in one season, 13 in 12 for Scotland u18s & 8 in 10 (732 mins) for Villas reserves. So he has finishing boots...

Homesickness cost us a good 'un back in 80/81 when top prospect Brian 'Choccy' McClair fell to it and we were forced to let him return home to
Motherwell where he went onto have a great career at Celtic and Utd.......but yes he was originally one of ours
[/quote]
-
I think a lot of things are put in place to ensure homesickness isn’t as much of thing nowadays….30 years ago I am sure it was sign/into digs and sink or swim…now the players (particularly ones that were coveted like this lad) have management, scope for families to move to the area etc to try everything to make them settle.
As for his development…he seems to have made it to the u23’s so every chance he will be training with first team regularly and 9 subs means he might get some time on bench this season

Ironically, I’d imagine Rangers (or Celtic) would be a good place to send promising young players. We invest in their youth academy, steal the best ones, but send them back on loan to get experience.
-
Sending him on loan to Celtic now would be peak shithousery. Sounds great.
-

Does the player not get a say in where he goes? I'm guessing he does, no point sending him somewhere he doesn't want to be as he isn't going to improve if he isn't happy. I would imagine this type of thing is well sourced by the staff (Jedinak) at Villa before he goes anywhere.
-
"There are good challenges with the 18s and 21s so it is just a case of me pushing on. I need to try and push on. We’ll wait and see how many goals I score. I take it game by game.
I don’t have that much involvement with the first team, just now and again. I think it is really important though if I get the opportunity to go and take it and learn as much as I can.
“I speak to John McGinn now and again. He is good with all the young Scottish boys at Villa. He’s a top guy. I have scored 12 goals this season including the Scotland one on Sunday.”
Wilson spoke about adapting to life away from home following his move from Glasgow
"Obviously, the standard is top drawer especially with the first team. There are world class players everywhere. What you hear about it is what you get. But that’s what you want. It’s up to me to push myself.
It ook me a bit of time at first to settle in because you are away from your family for the first time. But you get used to it. You have to get on with it and take it in your stride."

Players can refuse to go on loan, but it doesn't go down well.
The club loan manager and staff either contact clubs who the player would 'fit with' or more likely, Villa would be contacted by a club looking for a forward/right back/goalie etc.
A lot of the young players have an issue with loans and can be a bit sniffy about it. Going on loan to Southend Utd in the National League isn't appealing for some and they prefer to stay at BH and stand out in u21 games. They are away from home and out of their comfort zone. Some are shocked that they are treated differently and how poor the facilities are. If a change of manager occurs, they can also be frozen out.
Loans are great if the kid is playing and realizes it is to benefit him.

A loan to the J league next season perhaps?

A loan to the J league next season perhaps?
Yes, let's send an 18 year old kid to the other side of the world. Obvious thing to do to one of our best striker prospects for decades.

It says in that interview that he struggled a bit to settle when he moved from Glasgow to Birmingham, so sending him to Japan makes absolute sense.

Yes. I know it's common for clubs to send young players out on loan to clubs in other parts of the country to give them not only game time but experience of being away from home but Japan would be a stretch.

Yet two of Vissel Kobe’s talented Under 16 !! Are coming to train at Villa!
There's scope for academy players to be utilised in Japan as well as players from Kobe coming to England.
As detailed by the official partnership announcement.
-

Not sure it’ll be our top prospect going over there but fair chance others will go at various points Footy - not sure when the J League season runs, if it’s over summer would be good for any players who were injured during our season to go
-
How good is this Wilson?
I've heard good reports but had high hopes for Louie Barry, Cam Archer and befor Ruben Heden Murphy.
-
Yet two of Vissel Kobe’s talented Under 16 !! Are coming to train at Villa!
Yes, but the jet lag from going east to west is far easier to deal with than flying eastwards.
-
Japan is part of the global north and have far advance technology implementation in travel and support health care.
The young players would enjoy the experience as much as players coming to England.

So far at Rangers, Scotland & Villa he has played from the ages 15-18 at the levels u18-u21 & has pretty much scored a goal per game.
Could he flop?
Yes.
But from the age of 15 to 18, his goalscoring record playing at levels above his age suggests that he could become a very good striker...
So the likelihood of us sending Wilson to Japan?
If we do, I will eat my own arse...
-
Thanks. So an outside chance of some Euro conference action perhaps?
Sounds promising.
It's hard to fully know if a player is going to make it all the way.
-
Kellyman hasn't been at the academy long enough to be registered as a youth player and presumably, it would be the same for Wilson. The article also said he's barely trained with the senior squad yet so he's not likely to be in Emery's thinking for this season.
-
Wilson is another one like Kellyman who is quite tall, and still needs to fill out a bit. It's taken Louie Barry until he was 20 to stop looking like a skinny kid, and it could be the same for these two. There is no rush on either of them. Wilson is also younger than Kellyman, who himself is still VERY young. They'll both still only be 19 at the end of NEXT season.
Both excellent prospects, but as we've seen recently, the step up from starring at youth level to making it in our current first team is huge.

If Kobe's best young players are coming here, it's because the set-up, facilities and footballing standards are better here. There is absolutely no way we are sending some of our most promising youngsters in the other direction. Zero.

I'd say you're probably 100% correct here, mate.
I've been here for 10 years and I've never heard anything about Vissel's youth system.
Reysol and Bellmare, yes. But then their young talent gets snapped up by the likes of Marinos, Urawa and occasionally a German/Belgian team.
No chance any of our better youth players going to Jleague. It's probably League 1 standard most of the time. Maybe I'm being cruel, but every JLeague game I've ever been to, I've been bored to death / not been impressed by the level of football.
-
The Kobe youngsters are coming as part of the visit by the Japanese team at the end of the month. The Villa OS says they'll be here for the duration of the visit, so it's going to be a few days to a couple of weeks; however long the visit lasts. That's very, very different from sending teenagers halfway round the world on a season-long loan.
-

Didn't realise he was fairly tall (apparently he's 6ft) till I read that. That's encouraging and as you say gives him scope to fill out a bit.

A Rangers fan I know reckons he is about 6'2" / 6'3"...
-
1.83m according to Transfermarkt, which translates to exactly 6 foot.

Two more goals yesterday.
Too easy for him.

Been offered a new five year contract. Either an exciting prospect getting closer to breaking through or protection of a FFP compliance sale asset.

36 in 42 is some return.
-
Never seen him play but his numbers suggest he has talent. Our hoovering up of youth players is a good strategy in two ways, firstly the chance of unearthing a gem, secondly the ability to offset income against our expenditure. Also read a positive article about Rico Richards that suggests he is gaining confidence in replacing Louie Barry, their coach was suggesting he was a very reserved character and that his last couple of performances show increased belief in his abilities. Exactly the reason that finding good loan positions is an extremely important step in our youth team's progression. I think a loan for Wilson to a club at League One level next season would be exactly what he needs to take his game to the next level,
-
Is he filling out a bit and getting stronger?
-
We just have to hope that he doesn't pull a Chukweumeka on us & fuck off to Chelsea after refusing the contract...
-

Scrap that. He has already turned 18 apparently...

🚨 Aston Villa remain in contract talks with Rory Wilson — they have tabled several contract offers of five years. Several European sides, including Bayer Leverkusen, are believed to be interested in him.
@nickmashiter
Imagine reporting that to the police.
-
Sounds like we haven't given up, at least. I would like to see him on the bench sooner or later. Against Wycombe, maybe? If that doesn't persuade him to stay it's probably a lost cause.
-
I can't see him staying. He'll be eager to go out and play and will have plenty of offers that will see him on the pitch quicker than he will with us.
If we are struggling to get Duran to stay on the bench behind Watkins, imagine being Rory Wilson - would you want to wait your turn?
-

And you know what those Rorys are like, very difficult to deal with.
-
Surely if bigger clubs are interested we could convince a decent one to take him on loan. We get to keep him on the books and he gets to play more.
-
What 'bigger' club is an 18 year old with 0 career first team appearances going to go to and play a lot?
-
What 'bigger' club is an 18 year old with 0 career first team appearances going to go to and play a lot?
Well the post above says Bayern Leverkusen are interested in him. Why would they be a more attractive prospect to him if he's not going to play more? I'd assume if he's dragging his feet on signing he feels he can get game time sooner by signing somewhere else.
Edit - probably should have specified that by bigger, I mean bigger than where we normally loan our kids out to.
-
This guy just an utter irrelevance other than potentially getting some money for him as he will not be playing for villa seniors.
There are too many of these signings now that need a section away from main discussion board.
I think must have been some agreement to have to sign him under Gerrard.
Not interested whatsoever as he's something to do with Gerrard tenure.

They're not a bigger club.

Yes, you are quite correct. I'm still irritated by certain people's wilful disregard for the international player topic that was started for conversation!
When I tried to explain, I read that no one was interested! That hurts! Particularly since all I like to do is improve how things are discussed on the site by making it simple to use and recommend discussions are in the appropriate sections.
Although I don't need to add anything extra to Wilson's thread to this from here on in I do have strong feelings regarding Gerrard signing him. Also this Wilson is a reminding symbol of Gerrard and it was grossly unfair that Deano was replaced for that guy, and I truly loved Deano so I'm bias and I disliked SG. I loved Emery is in place now! I thank you for your recommendation to see the viewpoint of I don't enjoy the posts I read and will do that suggestions PWS.
My issue remains Gerrard and seeing Wilson is reminding me of him and Purslow colluding.
Sorry!

I'm sorry.
I put above some explanations.I copied what was said to me in that 'nobody cares' phrase about the international player thread, despite me saying it was upsetting as groups are writing on other games thread instead. It's not in my nature to be like that, so yes, the Wilson thread is very much entitled to be here on the main board as the current topic of conversation despite my personal reservations
I think people writing on other games thread though deliberately is not in the spirit of the forum, and I think people are taking out their frustrations regarding tickets and urinals on not writing on specific thread to cause chaos. It's my mistake to say that 'nobody's cares' that's wrong of me, and I can see that now.
And Drummond, and thanks for pointing it out as well.

"utter irrelevance"? - what, because he's a Scot?!!
I know you disapprove of John McGinn, but Really!!
Your dismissal of a Villa Academy player is actually quite saddening. I grew up watching the likes of John Gidman, Brian "walks on water" Little, Bobby Mac, Stevie Hunt; I saw Keith Leonard and Andy Gray mullering Liverpool; I witnessed the young Gary Shaw show England's best how to score goals. And now, we have Grealish, Ramsey et al from the recent academy set-up gracing the Premier League Stage.
Shame on you, F-V.

Sorry!
I'd say discussing Rory Wilson in the 'Rory Wilson' thread is very appropriate.
-
Another thread splattered with faeces by our attention seeking resident pebble dasher.
-
I doubt he's going to sign a new contract. He might have potential, but he's also got a long long way to go before he plays senior football at a high level.
He'll go somewhere where they have history of bringing through young players, probably the likes of Dortmund, Leverkusen. He could do that here, but I think it's unlikely now.
-
I suspected this guy was signed as part of Stevie G deal and to make some extra money.
Also there were several here who suspected Wilson wouldn't sign a new contract.
The news now coming from Glasgow based Scottish paper Daily Record says ' Rory Wilson 'set to' end Aston Villa nightmare as Rangers made to sweat over mega profit'
Sounds very ITK as also reported by The Athletic

What on earth are you talking about?
-
He's provided a link, what are you struggling with? As is usually the case with Record/Mirror/Birmingham Mail etc, it's basically just a rehash of what has been printed elsewhere, but they've given it a "Rangers" slant. If Villa lose money, "Rangers" lose money, too.
Every cloud.

That signing him was nothing to do with the deal to make Gerrard manager, obviously.
-
Good prospect, but I'm 100% behind the club sticking to its academy wage structure. By all means give him a contract that includes a nice bump in wages when he's had a dozen first-team appearances, but £20k+ a week while still in the academy? I don't think so.
-
It's also not like he's 'the one' either, we have a lad only 2 years older who's miles ahead.
-

According to the Athletic, other clubs are prepared to pay that. Fair enough if we're sticking to a set structure but if there are others prepared to pay substantially more, you also can't blame the player for considering his options. It's not like he's had many first team opportunities, apparently he's rarely trained with the first team squad so Emery obviouslsy thinks he has a long way to go.
-
The worst that happens is he becomes Brian McClair.
-
Brian McClair would probably fetch forty million, now.
I mean, not now, obviously. I'm aware he's probably in his sixties, before someone (BV) points that out. 🙂
-
His beard would.
Any road up, Wilson isn't good enough to be of immediate first team use. He might go on to have a top career, or he might become a difficult quiz question like record signing Scott Murray. Right now he has to do what he thinks is best for him.
But if he turns up in a mercenary squad that pips us to 2037 title, he must pay a heavy price.

If teams are genuinely willing to pay £20k a week to an 18-year-old without a single first-team appearance to his name - at any level - then I don't think that's a game we want to be playing? Especially in the world of FFP. Unless of course his wages aren't part of FFP as it counts as "youth investment"?
With the amount of money in the game, it makes sense that some of those riches will start flowing down earlier and earlier in a player's career if the clubs think it can save them £10m in transfer fees. But these aren't pennies. Let's say we pay him £20k a week, that's a million a year, if he signs a four or five year contract, then unless he becomes a regular first-team player you'd have to be selling him for multiple millions in order for it to make commercial sense.
-
20k ?? Is he insane
-
20k ?? Is he insane
If there are other clubs willing to pay him that then...no?
-
I imagine Jhon wasn't too dissimilarly paid on his first contract with us?
-
20k? if he's valued at the club, give him the money and a five year contract. If he's willing to sign for 5 years that is.
-
The 20K figure was made up here as speculation. We only know we've offered "five figures".
-
Never seen him play, he's achieved nothing as of yet and I couldn't pick him out a police line up. Non-story.
-
I think the difference between our offer and what he's getting from others is clearly that we still see him as part of the academy and have offered a contract which reflects that whereas other teams are willing to gamble on him in their senior squad and therefore offer better wages.
If he thinks he can get first team football and more money somewhere else then I guess fair play, it's a shame though as I'd have liked to see him get some time around Emery's coaching.
-
Has just turned 19, will he still be with us, when he celebrates his 20th birthday?
-
I imagine Jhon wasn't too dissimilarly paid on his first contract with us?
Which is what you’d expect having played a lot or at least more first team football.
-
Has just turned 19, will he still be with us, when he celebrates his 20th birthday?
Absolutely no chance, sadly.

Maybe not
🟣🔵🔐 Aston Villa has finalized a new contract extension to retain talent Rory Wilson, whose contract expires this summer.
Agreement in place and completed.
-
Wahey 🙂
-
how far is he from the first team do we think ?
-
how far is he from the first team do we think ?
My guess would be the pre-season on and around the first team tours, first half of next season upper level d3 and see from there, then sold next summer.
-
Does this mean he jumps ahead of Louie Barry ?
-
Does this mean he jumps ahead of Louie Barry ?
Seems very unlikely. He's two years younger and has never played a first-match before for anyone.
As above, first-team pre-season and a loan somewhere would be the obvious.
-
I thought April fools only went up to midday?
Wasn’t expecting this.
-
He's obviously wised up to what's going on at Villa and decided that it's worth stopping, instead of trying to use the club as a stepping stone to something "better."
Well done to the club for taking a strong stand, whilst at the same time keeping talking to him and his agent/family.
-
He's signed. Think this could be a masterstroke.
-
He still needs to put some size on.
-
Delighted with this.
-
He's signed.
Does this mean he's back to being an exciting prospect as opposed to nothing special any time we've seen him play?
-
It means he can even get it done on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke.
-
Two years plus an option seems a bit odd. Like he’s committed but he hasn’t really. He has to prove now what all the fuss has been about considering he’s been angling to leave for ages. All well and good doing it at kids level but time to step up. Hopefully he gets involved this summer.
-
He only turned 19 in January, so he'll be 21 when the 2yr deal comes to an end.
Not sure who has the option to excercise the 1 yr extension - Villa or Wilson
Anyway, we need to ensure that we don't end up in the same situation/stand-off in 2 years time. Train him hard from now until August and then integarate him into the first team - match day squad, 15 mins in Carabao Cup games?
If he's showing promise - loan him out in Jan and review his progress next summer.
I like him as a player, but not too sure of his character - after all, he gave Rangers the run around before joining us.
-
I mean, this is purely for fattening up for FFP. Let's not kid ourselves.
-

Yep. The level we're at now, it's going to be nigh-on impossible for a homegrown player to break through into the first time. We'll have a few in the squad over the years, I'm sure, but it's probably going to take a generational talent to actually become a first-team fixture. I'm sure our plan to recruit the best youth players into our academy, then sell them on, so be it.
If the youth system is going to be 90% about making money we can reinvest in the team, and 10% about developing players FOR the first team, I can live with that. Despite it feeling wrong on many levels.
I hope I'm proven wrong, and that our Champions League retaining side of 2031 contains half a dozen homegrown talents from the West Midlands area!
-
I'd wager he fancies his chances otherwise why bother signing?
-
Great news well done Villa, hopefully he will end up as one of the great Scots, who have worn the Claret and Blue shirt.
-
There’s a spot in the squad for a young forward if one of them develops…Wilson is one of those, staying fit until end of season would be first aim and then sure the negotiation of the contract involved a plan of whether he is here or loaned out. There is potential there but he needs to step up levels now that is up to him
-
Could be an option for Europe next season as a young homegrown..
-
He's the same age as Duran was when we signed him. Is he comparable? - isn't that now the benchmark?
-
I mean, this is purely for fattening up for FFP. Let's not kid ourselves.
In the 2023-24 accounts, we spent £20m on the Academy.
We're going to try and recoup one way or another.
-
People mentioned in one of the other threads about how we need our commercial revenue to get to the level of Chelsea's, and we do. But they also make a lot from selling youth team players. We need our academy to develop players either good enough to come through to the first team (and save us millions in purchases) or good enough that we can sell for big profits. With us in the FA Youth Cup final and the younger age groups looking promising, there's signs that we're on the way to doing that.
-

Not really, youngsters develop at different speeds…Wilson doesn’t have the physique of Duran, few do at that age. He needs to follow his own path, pre season with first team and then see

Was hoping it'd be a 10 year Chelsea-style contract after all the mooning over him.

You say that like it's something to be concerned about, rather than a sign of excellent character.

You'd expect nothing less from someone named Rory.

TBF, being a pro footballer is a short life and I don't blame anybody for wanting to get the best deal that they can for themselves - after all most of us would consider a job change for more money.
However, whilst I don't give a monkeys about him messing Rangers around, I take great exception to anybody who tries it on with my club.

Holy shit!
