Title: Aston Villa v Tottenham ‘Spursy’ Pre Match Thread. Saturday 5.30pm.
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on April 06, 2022, 09:44:11 PM
Plucky for 72 minutes.  Penalty given for a none foul on Son.  Lose 2-0.  No glove laid on them.  Gerrard to moan about a poor half argue with Des who claims rightly that we were shit.  Is my prediction.

Villa 1.3 Spuds

Spuds hit their stride quickly and we get a late consolation.

I have zero faith that Gerrard has any plan B and plan A v better teams doesn't work

We rarely do draws.
Conte vs G'rrr'd on the touchline.
I can only see this going one way, but I shall remain hopeful right up to kick-off.

Frowns may become grimaces if the new manager doesn't get a victory here, a draw may be enough to to keep the wolf from the door. Confused tactics, lack of pace and intensity in the team and 3 defeats on the spin has raised questions again about the qualities of Gerrard. A win will banish those questions but a defeat, particularly comprehensive or with little fight will only increase the focus on what future we have with him.

I find little optimism but will use that distant light, and the law of averages to predict a score draw.

2-2

Spurs in very good form at the moment, we are off the back of three straight defeats. Blind optimism but I think we will win as a result. Spurs like Arsenal are flaky when at this stage of the season. All the pressure is on them. So at a minimum, no sitting off them like we did v Arsenal. Likes of Dier, Doherty, Davies are no world beaters if put under pressure.

Luiz will come back in. Watkins always struggles against three centre backs so think we need to try something different and get players near him. McGinn played very well v Spurs last year given a bit of a free role to press them. Have been saying it all season but get him away from sitting deep and push him forward. I'd also ask Ramsey to play a much more disciplined role in midfield. He needs to contribute a lot more defensively and to the general midfield play.

-------------Martinez
Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne
----Sanson, Luiz, Ramsey
McGinn, Watkins, Coutinho

He should be on the bench, if he starts he won't be lasting more than an hour.

Not sure how the team is going to look as feels like Ollie or Ings upfront on their own and they'd just get submerged by their three CBs. One of Bentancur or Hojiberg will likely sit on Coutinho. Perhaps we'll start Buendia aswell but would leave us outnumbered in central midfield unless he plays deep.

And with form Kane is in he'll find all sorts of space between our defence and midfield and dragging out Mings or Konsa for Son to run into.

Probably one of Gerrard's most difficult selections since becoming our manager as it feels a bit of a nightmare match up.

I wouldn't actually be against bringing in Chambers and switching to 3-5-2 and just matching them up and seeing what happens but then I assume it's a formation Gerrard hasn't played in his managerial career so would be alien to him compared to Conte who uses it at every club he manages.

Yes I agree; this would be a start. Sitting back and letting them play around us for 45 minutes before there is a reaction won't do.

Our record against them is fairly dreadful as it is in general against the better sides. Since we beat them on New Year's Day in 2008, we've played them 10 times at VP in the league and drawn twice and lost the other 8, and we've lost the last 6.

Yep, good analysis. Ive been thinking maybe he should play Coutinhio and Beundia wide left and right cutting in, but then i think we also need Ings and Watkins on the pitch, which would just leave us light in centre mid.
Head says an uncomfortable evening and comprehensive defeat, heart says 3-2 villa (Coutinhio, Watkins, Ramsey).

Martinez
Cash
Konsa
Mings
Digne
Luiz
McGinn
Ramsey
Coutinhio
Watkins
Beundia

tend to agree with the 3-5-2. What we’ve done in the last three matches, hasn’t worked and a full strength Spurs are arguably a better side than Wolves  and Arsenal. If not the 3-5-2, then maybe bring Nakamba back in, but it’s a massive ask for somebody with no first team football for so long.

If Nakamba is fit to start I'd be interested to see us play two DMs in a 4-2-3-1 (or 4-4-1-1)

Cash  Konsa   Mings   Digne
          Nakamba   Luiz
Buendia     Coutinho     Ramsey
                  Ings

I guess he'll never leave McGinn out but this would make us a bit more solid and we'd still have plenty of flair on the field.

We're at home
We've got a fully fit squad
We'll tear in to them from the very start
The crowd will be massively behind the team

2-0

I'm hoping a midfield without the quickly becoming liability mcginn.
I'm hoping we go 2 up top with countinho back on form behind.

I'm hoping we surprise them by actually getting a foot 8n before 80 mins and being behind

Virtually no confidence for this game. Spurs have hit their stride and we’re a bit of a mess at the moment.

Spurs play 3 at the back. Having seen how we set up against the same formation at Wolves I have little hope today. Spurs seem nailed on for 4th. They look very good at the moment. A difficult evening ahead!!

Not looking forward to this. I'm going 0-3 with at least one of their goals being a penalty after a VAR review.
