Title: West Ham vs Aston Villa pre-match thread
Post by: Dave on March 12, 2022, 06:53:20 AM
Sunday 13th March, 2pm, that London.

2-2. Ings and McGinn.

Latest ever pre-match thread?

I think this will be a tough one, they've had our number since we came back up. Although reading their forum the majority seem to want to rest anybody thats important to them for the Sevilla game.

Would probably take a draw but if Moyes is of the same mindset as the fans then hopefully a win.

A tough game on their stupidly narrow pitch. They are beginning to look a bit leggy. Antonio looks like he could not hit a cows are with a banjo, so he will get a couple.
I wonder when that wanker sendo will turn up.

Tough game but we're on a roll and to show progression we need to start beating teams competing for the top 6 positions.
This would be a good game in which to start that trend.

Well we were in the Championship for 3 of those years to be fair. But we also hadn't beaten Southampton at home or Palace away since god was a lad, and those records were happily smashed apart.

To be fair we didnt play them for 3 seasons when we were in the championship. Since coming back up, those two draws in our first year back up when both teams struggled, but they’ve beaten us 3 on the bounce since. Thought we utterly outplayed them at their place last year, but dodgy defending from set pieces, glaring misses (Trez, Watkins pen) and a fingernail VAR offside did us. They’ve pretty much outplayed us in the last two games at VP.
Tough game this, they are on an iffy run, but not getting hammered by anyone, usually the odd goal and Antonio is a different proposition (even when not scoring) to Bamford or Che Adams. There midfield two dominated us at Villa Park in October as well.
Still we’re flying at the minute and should give them a good game. Id take Ramsey out for a rest for Sanson and otherwise keep the same team.
Would take a draw but going for an optimistic 0-2 (Coutinhio and Watkins with a late one on the counter).

We have a tough run of fixtures coming up, so good to be in some run of form going into those fixtures.  West Ham seem a bit stodgy just lately, so I expect us to win by a 0-1 margin with McGinn to toe poke one home from 30 yards.

I thought winning 3 on the bounce was a stretch but after Thursday I think 4 is a distinct possibility. We are bouncing, they are a bit flat so we go into this with much confidence. I would be happy with a draw but will demonstrate rare optimism and go all out for the win.

1-2

Absolutely no idea about this result. Thought we’d smash Leeds at home , we drew. Thought we’d beat Watford, we lost. Thought we’d beat Newcastle, we lost. Thought we’d draw against Brighton we won. Thought we’d draw against Saints, we won. Only one I’ve picked recently is Leeds away. I’ll go with a draw 2-2. But who knows with Villa.

Anyway, tough game this for West Ham. You lot seem to be scoring for fun and playing good football. Coutinho has hit the ground running and I like the look of the young lad Ramsey. Digne is also a good buy for you at LB and seems an improvement on Targett who I never thought much of.

We’re starting to get to the point where lack of squad depth is becoming an issue. After this we have Seville again in the week then Spurs. Many West Ham fans want to rest and rotate to keep players fresh for the EL in the week, but honestly our options arent that numerous, and Moyes seems to be constitutionally averse to squad rotation of any kind.

Bowen looks like he is still out which is bad for us. Most likely Benrahma will come back in for Vlasic, although he looks lost at the moment, constantly trying to beat too many players before cutting inside and blazing the ball over the bar.

On the plus side Antonio has looked much sharper the last few games, and I fancy him to get a goal. Soucek has also looked much better of late at a time when Rice hasnt so much.

Earlier in the season we were scoring for fun but letting in too many, now weve tightened up at the back but keep missing sitters. I cant guess the result, but I expect it to be tight. Probably a 2-1 either way and hopefully a good game.

Good to hear from you again, sendô. As Risso says, you've always been a positive poster on H&V. I've got close friends who support Man U, Newcastle and Blues and what I say to them about their team is rather different from what I might say about them to fellow Villa fans.

Can you, or anyone, confirm this? I've heard that after the match the Met escort away fans via a circuitous route to a station of the police's choosing, regardless of where individual fans want to go to. This used to happen at St Andrew's and I won't go there again (if we're ever in the same division) because it's so frustrating and tedious. What can you tell us about the arrangements at WHU? I'm hoping to leave from Pudding Mill DLR to get back to Sussex.

Yeah, Im not sure the route they take for away fans but it’s long and tedious for the home fans, having to wait at the stop go signs and having to walk the long way around Westfield to Stratford station. It normally takes 20 to 30 minutes. Certainly no better than the Boleyn used to be, and there’s fewer pubs nearby too.

Sendo, what is WHU's priority - to go as deep as possible in the Wafer Cup or keep-up the challenge for 4th?

Hard to call which is more likely, winning the Europa and gain CL entry or finishing 4th (given that Arsenal have 3 games in ahead and are 3 points ahead and Spurs are level on points with two games in hand).

Moyes on Villa...did he/how many times did he turn us down as manager I wonder?

Quote
I’ve always thought a lot of Aston Villa.

I said, from last year, that Aston Villa have got good players. They’ve got some really talented young players. They’ve signed well in the transfer market.

The Premier League is full of good teams, whoever you play at the moment. There’s a lot of really good, competitive games in the Premier League and Aston Villa will certainly be that.

They’ve had some really good results, but I think the Premier League this year is so close. I think there are very little between the teams. Of course, there’s a bit between Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and maybe the rest, but I think after that there is very little between the teams from top to bottom.

You look at the improvement in Newcastle United and the results that Burnley have picked up in recent weeks. I think we’re seeing different momentum swings in the season, and I think Aston Villa are in a good moment, so we’re going to need to play well to get the points.

To be honest I think 4th has slipped away from us now, unless Arsenal have a sudden downturn in form. Their 3 games in hand on us are vs Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs so it’s still possible, but in truth we were in the driving seat but dropped points all too often with poor decisions at key moments. Weve lost both games to Man U this year for instance in the last minute, so we should really be 2 points better off and them 4 less. Thats football though.

I dont really think Moyes is capable of having a priority. He’ll go for both, and honestly as much as Id love us to win the Europa League, we’re a way away from the final yet. Its too soon to throw everything at Europe. The main aim for the club should be getting into Europe regularly now were there, and using the money to build the squad.

We may well go out to Seville this Thursday so it might be moot soon anyway.

One change for me.

Sanson for Ramsay. Ings for 70 mins then either Bailey or Traore to terror their aging back 4.

Confidence must be sky high, I actually fancy us for this

Most of Walford Square seem to support these kit stealing wankers. Another start to finish 90 minutes of dominance with 3 or 4 goals and a  clean sheet would not go amiss.

Agree about the Sanson for Ramsey change.  Not really reflection on how Ramsey has been playing, just to keep him fresh really and to have another look at Sanson.

Every time I ve seen West ham tis season they seems really difficult to play against, good defensively and some good defenders (Ogbonna) and scoring on the break (Bowen and Antonio running the ball into goal - Lukaku style). Ogbonna? and Bowen out a miss for them. We are in good form and if we come out like we did at Ellen road (how good that win was) we do them 2-1 i predict. And CT Villain I very much want to be PM ed before kick off too.

Northern Line via Bank is closed until May.

Either:
Go Northern Line southbound to Waterloo, change for the Jubilee Line eastbound to Stratford.
Or:
Go Victoria Line southbound to Green Park, change for Jubilee Line eastbound to Stratford.

Or this way, but quicker to walk to St Pancras. Come out of Euston and turn left along the Euston Road. It's a ten minute walk.

Massive game today.

At the moment we have an outside chance of European football next season. Lose today, no chance, draw today, little chance, win today, a realistic chance.

We are building a squad that needs more matches in a season to give all players game time and maintain morale. Stevie G is used to playing 50 plus matches a season and is building a squad to service that.

Only 38 league matches next season and our usual shyte cup draws could set us back!! For this reason, I can see us throwing the kitchen sink at the Hammers today and bursting their bubbles.

1-2 to the Villa

Euston to Stratford getting the high speed line from St Pancras is probably best, otherwise get Metropolitan line to Liv St then you can do either central line or any number of main line rail or TFL rail to Stratford. Avoid Jubilee line which takes the long route south of the river.

Also I have several alternatives to the issues mentioned above by andyh which im happy to share if needed.

I think Sanson should come in for Ramsey. Give him a rest and give Sanson some game time.

Their pitch is the standard size, identical to ours.
there is some sort of optical illusion going on then, if you look at the distance penalty are to by line it looks too narrow.

I suspect it's because of the camera angle as it's so far away from the pitch.

And it’s a one tiered stand so the angle of the pitch will seem narrow. I quite like it tbf

There is, but as its match day, I thought I would get a faster response..

Thanks to all for the travel advice.

Happened to me once, but that was when Billy Bonds was manager and they had MacAvennie up front. We bossed the game but lost at the last minute. Have had a dislike of them ever since.

With Brighton losing yesterday, Leicester away at Arsenal, if, if, we can get something from today to put a bit of distance between us, would be lovely.
