Title: Aston Villa 4-0 Southampton post match thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on March 05, 2022, 04:51:40 PM
Overall our most complete under Gerrard. The players are starting to get used to how he wants them to play. Working better as a unit. Defending together. I still think we need to strengthen that midfield core and long term 2 forwards doesn’t work as much as it ultimately did today. Against better sides with better attacking players it will cost us. But can’t complain at all about the performance. Should have and very could have been 6 or 7.

MOM Phil pulled strings all over the pitch. Special mention for Ash and Chambers who came in last night and were very good indeed. Callum with one of the passes of the season for our second goal.

Quality performance today.

Reminded me of Derby home game from promotion season, same situation in we could've scored 6-7 if we wanted to but declared at 4.

We really should be finishing top 10 now so hopefully no false dawn at Leeds.

7 points off Wolves with a game in hand so still think 8th is a realistic target for this season.

Not a single weak performance today from any player.  Seems to be coming together and looking forward to seeing how Gerrard build it.  Very comprehensive performance, great goals, clean sheet, outplayed the oppo.  Special mention to Matty Cash, thought he was excellent.  Well done Villa.

Wasn't expecting that result against an in-form Saints team. Well done to the players.
Another clean sheet for Emi. A make-shift defence brilliantly marshalled by Tyrone.
Pleased for Luiz getting his goal. Needs to be played further forward to see the best of him. Coutinho brilliant. Watkins and Ings did their jobs and more. I said in the match thread that if both are to be played one or other or both need to be scoring to justify the selection and they both answered that today.
A result to be savoured, then onto the next game! UTV!

Great result. I work with plenty of Saints fans. I think it might be quiet on Monday morning. They were all giving it the Billy Bigbollocks yesterday and confidently predicting 3-1 to them. Just off to cook chicken chasseur now. It will taste all the better now. Enjoy your evening lads and lassies, I intend to. All it needs now is for Mrs. VV to be "friendly" later and the day will be complete. I've put her some Prosecco in the fridge to help matters along :) :) :)

What a difference to be complaining that we didn't score 5 or more.

I think the vital tweak from SG has been to not commit the fullbacks so far forward. This is making a big difference to our shape when out of possession. Congrats to Ollie today, thought he had a great game, I can't remember the last time he dominated in the air !

Watkins was immense today, should have had another but his work rate was off the scale and he bullied his centre back. Lovely creative performance from Phillippe, full of craft and guile. Special mention to Emi who despite not having a great deal to do pulled off a couple of very good saves to keep the clean sheet.

However an all round good team performance with a clean sheet plenty of shots and good shape without the ball.

Cash was superb, my MOTM, and Chambers was a very dependable replacement for Konsa.
It’s interesting to see how the little magician is starting to be on the same wavelength as Watkins and other team members. some of the ‘simple’ things he’s does are just brilliant and his link up play is getting better and better.

Congratulations to SG and players for a MAGNIFICENT win. Puts steam in a Villa fan’s stride!
I’ve just scraped egg off my face after having had a moan beforehand when I saw the team sheet. I’ll hold my hand up - trust in SG.

Some of our play - wow
Players looked really up for it and the noise from the sellout was great.

Kudos to the brethren who cried me a river.

Another clean sheet!

Cash - please don’t go!

Coutinho - I’d kiss your boots.

Feel so happy after a hard working week and relaxed today with joyous celebration as each goal scored in between each fluffed chance. This could have been 9-0.

Hate the Saints, still holding a grudge since the 11 unbeaten at the Dull under Gregory.

Fantastic today. Dipped off a bit after an hour bit think you have to give the opposition some credit for that. Some brilliant stuff from us today. Coutinho was just superb. The weight and positioning of his passing leaves no work for the receiving player to do.

Ings and Watkins combined really well today. Maybe it can work. It seems to help Coutinho get on the ball more in areas where he can be most effective.

Loved our goals today. All fantastic.

Excellent performance. I think Gerrard has now cracked the Ings/Watkins conundrum too. The secret is having a world class no10 playing just behind them. Simples. I think there were good signs too that those two were finding some cohesion together, on top of all their hard work. Good assist from Danny for Watkins goal too. It was great to see just how delighted the whole team was when Danny scored too. Pleased for him because I'd be loath to write him off yet. Two weeks ago there was growing feelings we didn't have a capable forward at the club. The feeling is different now.
Coutinho playing in the middle rather than inside left, also suits him more. He has less responsibility to track back, and I thought Ollie/Ings did that very well today.

Phil is a delight to watch. He's a class apart. The fitter he gets and the more he can run, the more he can cause defences a nightmare in tracking him. Southampton had no answer for his movement today.

I hope we keep the momentum going and really turn up against clubs fighting for Europe and against relegation. Because all those sides will be fired up. They may just have that 10% more determination than others. I like at our bad run which came against clubs scrapping at the bottom, and our two wins on the spin against sides with nothing really to play for.  We've raised our levels again, but we need to keep it up and get as many points as possible. Momentum for next season.

Salisu, our fullbacks, our midfield, and Broja are miles better than what they are working with imo. What do you guys do with the youths who stick a high vis on and charge you a £5 to park on the road? Normally we chuck them £5 be done with it, but were there early today before they'd rocked up, then started getting grief off one of them when we were trying to strap a little one in the car seat when we were leaving, so told the scrounging little rat to fuck off.

So probably get a big key mark down the car next time?

One thing which has often struck me about Adams whenever I see him play, is that if he could actually finish he'd be getting 15-20 a season, but he can't. He's got a 1 in 3 ratio this season. If he scrapes double figures, he seems the kind of player to me who'll never do it again. Not a chance in hell he'd match what Ollie did last season and I'd be confident Ollie will enjoy a better run-in this season. Soton fans seem to have forgotten Ings' goal scoring knack too, as that's quite a confident prediction that Adams will comfortably outscore him.

Great day out at Villa Park. Still on the way home....

Martinez 7, Cash 9, Chambers 7, Mings 6, Young 7, Luiz 7, McGinn 6, Ramsey 6, Coutinho 8, Ings 8, Watkins 7. Sanson 7, Bailey 4, Buendia 7
Glad you enjoyed the day.

Agree with most of your scores, except incredibly harsh on Mings, he was excellent today on the whole. Also thought Watkins was more than a 7.

Thats the best game Dougie has had in months.

Takes a bit of getting used to hitting teams on the break at home and essentially letting them have lots of the ball, takes patience from us fans, but it worked well today and well worth the big win today. Coutinhio is just sheer class.

Yes we had several really good chances, though not necessarily from dominant possession.

I hope that it's another step to show that Ings and Watkins can play together; I never really saw why they 'couldn't'.

Chambers and Young acquitted themselves well today, but Coutinho was really good today, despite the miss at 2-0.

As a big critic , let me say Luiz had a good day today as did many others.
Enjoyed Ash, lots of AArgg before game but played well and ever professional
They have been on a good run and it showed, played well in first 20 m0ns and also trying to pull something back in second half
.
But we were too good
Sign up Phil

That front 3 worked well. Our formation was more of a 4-1-2-1-2 today I thought. We are definitely better keeping the full backs closer to home.

Luiz did ok just in front of the centre backs I thought, McGinn just isn't playing himself into form and I'd have Sanson in ahead of him, he looked good in his cameo.

And I wouldn't agree about Young, I thought he was ok but it was frustrating him not being able to cross with his left foot.

Good day out.

Positives

Very comfortable win that flattered Southampton. The chances we missed we gilt edged, it really ought to have been 6. I'm glad that we were ruthless though and stuck a score on somebody.

Felt the front 3 worked really well, Coutinho is sublime when he's at it, just next level in his class.

We totally out worked them and kept a brilliant shape throughout to nulify them entirely. In both boxes we were miles apart in quality.

When we quicken our play, we're pretty devastating and sliced through Southampton at will.

We limited them to nowt, much like the Brighton game.

Negatives

Felt Ramsey was woeful today, way off the pace. The entire midfield was poor with ball retention. Perhaps not helped by Chambers, who while very solid defensively and going full Merson with that pass for the 2nd, he lacks Konsa's comfort in stepping out into midfield and his good range of passing. More safety and percentage balls as a result.

Equally the absence of Digne and his pace made us a little lopsided. I also think Luiz fails to close quick enough and commit to the press.

Shame we declared on 55 minutes as the score could have been anything. Really happy with the win though and performance. Excellent off the ball and we look horrible to play against in these last two games, as we'll out work and out muscle you.

Interesting. I guess playing regularly for your country or being in the squad must not be a barometer of anything.

Just got back - what a good performance - I think we looked awesome in the final 3rd and very solid in defence.  Thought the midfield could have kept the ball a bit better but overall we’re good enough.

Little Phil is Brilliant - at times he is unplayable.  I would sign him up this evening because when he’s in your team you always have a chance, and think there will be others in for him depending on how it works.

Some of our play in the final third was excellent, probably should of had a couple more.

The confidence in Ollie is massive - he looked really good today, and maybe, just maybe Ings and Watkins could work.

Best performance under SG I would say we look better balanced today with The diamond in midfield - really like emi but Not sure if we’re better with only one “10” playing.

Was worried when I saw Ashley and Chambers starting but both hardly put a foot wrong.

Thought Bailey looked afraid to run at full speed - doesn’t look in a great place at the moment.

We’ll done SG and we’ll done Villa.

Agree about Ramsey, brilliant young player but should be given time to catch his breath. Coutinho is still coming to terms with the pace of the premiership but what an artist, we must keep him. Worried when I saw the team especially Ash at left back but he was okay. Luiz for me is still not dominant enough, JM worked hard as did both forwards.

For all Saints possession, they didn't have a chance of note until we were 4-0 up and we missed far easier chances than the ones we scored.

I can not understand how anybody can score any other player above or even level with Coutinho. He was so much better than every player on the pitch.
He was different class today. Scored 1 was involved in the other 3 could have scored 3 and set up at least another 2.
How many players are involved in 8+ scoring opportunities in a game?

Just got home from the US, and went through the match thread in the taxi to Euston rather than just check the score straight away. Prefer it that way as you get more of the feeling you get seeing it live.

When I saw the teamsheet I was a little worried, but needn't have been. What a great result, and what a difference the tactical adjustment has made in the last two games.

Have to feel sorry for Buendia, as he has been playing well but finds himself on the bench. No arguing with the decision though, as Coutinho is better and the team is playing better with just one of them.

Watkins and Ings is showing signs of being a decent partnership at last. Thought they both played well for once.

Luiz had a decent game, and scored a great goal. Not his biggest fan but credit where due, he did well today.

Chambers looked decent too.

Interesting change. It made Luiz and McGinn more effective and made Coutinho devastating at the tip of the diamond, but at least today reduced the effectiveness of JJ. But it certainly made us look a lot better. The question now is how and when do we change it to incorporate Bailey, Traore, Buendia? Good problems to have.

I didn’t think there was much between the teams, in fact I thought they looked more assured with the ball and us a little sloppy and lacking intensity. Apart from the final third when we had Phil and they didn’t. One of the best individual performances you’ll see in a long time.

Seriously this has been missing from our game for quite a while and if you're going to get the best from the likes of Ings and Watkins it needs to be an integral part of our tactics.

I think that service is Coutinho. Harsh on Buendia but we seem eternally better since moving to a diamond and dropping the two 10's. Although I'd be more than comfortable using Emi in place of Ramsey/McGinn in the diamond aswell.

I don’t think they looked particularly like scoring - we were better in the final 3rd and more solid in defence then them (clearly) - but they kept the ball much better in midfield.  I think all of our midfielders are attack minded - too often looking for killer balls where there’s were better at keeping the ball.  It worked for us yesterday but we could do with learning when to keep the ball

What a day that was. Coutinho looked every bit the player Barcelona paid 140 million for. He cut Southampton to ribbons with his intricate passing and he's single handedly turning JJ into a player that England can't ignore. I was on a corporate thingy in the North Stand and got talking to a saints fan after the game who was mightily impressed with the Villa and Villa Park it was his first visit. I don't know if it's been covered on here yet but about an hour after the match SG came onto the pitch with his family and had a kick about and that was quite something to see.

What a superb performance against one of the form teams in the league, nobody had a poor game. Yesterday showed Ings and Watkins can work in some matches, thought Chambers was very impressive, I'm a Konsa fan, but it would be very hard on Callum if he was left out against Leeds on that display. The question is, is there a better player in the league at the moment than Phil, the answer is no.

Southampton had the ball for long periods, as borne out by the possession stats, but I wouldn't say at any point I thought they were the better side. For most of the first half we were still giving the ball away needlessly, but on the positive side we seemed quite adept at stopping a side that were on a long run of good form from getting anything going. If that front three of ours can maintain those levels of workrate and interplay, they'll blow better sides than So'ton out of the water. We genuinely looked like scoring every time we ventured past the centre circle.

So many positives I don’t know where to start. It seems as though Gerrard’s talk with Ings and Watkins has worked wonders, their body language has improved and when Ings scored that is the most enthusiastic I’ve seen Ollie be about a team mates goal.

Credit to Chambers, I called him ‘limited’ in the Watford game but that pass to Coutinho was sensational. He’s starting to look like a shrewd signing now.

Special mention for Cash, who was being quite rightly called out for his terrible final ball a few months ago but credit to him he has worked hard on it and now looks a threat.

A few people being imo a bit harsh on sjm, he's not playing the same role as under smith, and his workrate when we haven't got the ball is amazing.

He was part of a side that thrashed an inform team and kept a clean sheet. Job well done. I also think he did Coutinho a favour by going after Romeu from the start and putting in a few crunching tackles. Think he got in Romeu’s head and made him concentrate on getting McGinn back rather than focusing on the real threat in our team.

This doesn’t happen. No one charges £5 when people park on the road. Tell me which road and I will pass it on the the local councillor.

Vicarage Road, same couple of lads are always there.

That's been going on for decades - I can remember parking in the street the other side of the park back in the 90s and there being kids asking for money to "watch your car mate".

Yeah it has but back in the day they wasn't sticking on Hi-Viz jackets and charging a fiver.
“Looking after your car mister” is a great tradition. I did it myself in the 80’s with my friend but it was for 10p. So I now respect kids who still do it for a £1 but this hi viz jackets and £5 is totally unacceptable. I am going to follow it up.
An Everton friend of mine once told me that when he parked his car on the road near Goodison a lad came up and asked for a fiver to look after his car. My mate said no that’s fine the dogs in the car - he’ll look after it. The lad said can your dog put out fires mate!

Watched it again last night.

The interplay with the front three was great, Coutinho everywhere, asking for the ball and then doing something with it, normally passing the ball and keeping it moving. Nice to see the goals spread around and special mention for Ings, who I thought did really well.

When we play at pace, and keep the ball moving, we're so much better than when it's ponderous, slow build up.

We're not really a possession-based side. Our midfielders (and Matthew Cash) are all too loose with their passing hence our most dangerous moments are quick pieces of interplay. But that means we struggle at times especially against the poorer teams as they defend in numbers and look to use the same methods as us when attacking.

Yeah - this is 100% where we are at.  Thats said, I am hoping SG and his team should be able to sort that out in the mid-term, as I assume Rangers must have had the majority of the possession

Gerrard wants us to be a possession based team so there's lots of work to do. We've probably only done well at this away at Norwich and away at Brentford and some of the best football we've played was the first half at Palace.

I don't park here, but as I walk through this area there are a few youths trying the same thing on around this cluster of roads:

It was from about then maybe even earlier but still makes me chuckle each time something reminds me of it!

On a similar theme.  A friend of mine who had a friend who was a policeman traveled to a cup game V Everton a few years back.  As this policeman was a policeman he used his position to use the Car park of the local Police station to securely park his car.  He asked one of these street security entrepreneurs where the local nick was.  "Up this road to the lights turn right and you'll smell it from there."

Back to the game, it showed two similarities between Phillipe and Grealish; they both have a superb first touch and the weight that they deliver their passes with is perfect.

That first-half chip-pass to Cash was unbelievable!
