Date: Saturday 5th March
Kick-off: 15:00 GMT
Venue: Villa Park
We are currently 12th and could go up to 10th if we win and other results are favourable. We are winless in our last 6 home games against Southampton (D2 L4) we have lost the last three conceding 11 goals in the process.
Southampton are unbeaten in five PL games (W3 D2), winning both their last two by a 2-0 scoreline.
Aston Villa are, well, Aston Villa.
FTF! 3-1 to a resurgent Villa.
-
We will win. Somehow. Ings to score and moon the Saints fans.
2-0 Ings and Coutinho
-
Keep Le Tissier quiet and we have a chance.
-
To finish above them, and potentially nab a top-half finish, I think we need to beat them. Unfortunately, they're playing their best football since Hassenhuthl took charge. Hard-earned draw most likely but I'd love Ings to pop-up with a late VAR'd winner (ironic twist on his last-gasp 'goal' against us last year).
-
We've not won at home in 3 months and unfortunately I can't see a win here. 15 minute spells in games just isn't enough.
We need to be on the front foot and dominate, including possession. Buendia taking the fall for the Watford result to accommodate 2 strikers won't help us to dominate, so he needs to be re-instated at the expense of Ings. UTV!
-
What BE said.
-
Those wassocks from Wessex are long overdue a good beating at VP.
Nil nil it is then.
-
I think the rest of the season will see us still trying to find an identity under this manager and a visit from an in form team puts that under pressure. I'm happy that what patently wasn't working has been addressed but we're not out of the woods yet. On the positive side I hope Ollie's goal will give him a boost and I back him to strike again in an entertaining draw.
2-2
-
Saints are in form and full of confidence, we have a poor record against them and I think we will lose 1-2.
-
It's about time we beat the Scummers at home. UTV
-
If we win it won't be pretty - never is against Southampton. Can see a 0-0 on the cards.
-
I post in the Pre-match thread, but I never predict in the poll. I did against Brighton and predicted a Brighton win, so it makes sense that I go for a Southampton win.
-
we'll twat them 4-0
-
0-2
-
Give away no free kicks for JWP specials and we have a chance.
Southampton have an FA Cup match tomorrow v West Ham hopefully a long night extra time and a some short term injuries!
1-0 Villa.
-
1-0 Villa, temporary joy before Global Thermonuclear War reminds us it’s not that important 🧐
-
That's the spirit! 😅

Me and my lad are likely to be at the ground early this weekend, could anyone tell me what time the players arrive and if you are still able to get autographs or photographs from them? Sorry to put this on here but couldn’t find the answer in the search and didn’t want to start a new thread.

The last time I walked past the area where the players park and sign autographs, it was all covered up so you couldn't see them but that may have been because of Covid. Not sure if that's still the case. As for the time they get there, I'd guess around 12-30- 1ish, unless Gerrard has them in at dawn.
-
Not feeling confident but a 1-0 win for the Villa
-
tough game - but we will grind out a 2-1 win
-
1-1 Draw
-
1-1
Cascarino for us, Le Tissier for them
Paul Rideout to be substituted for someone called Alan Shearer
-
On the plus side Ings won't be scoring for them.
-
I believe Southampton have a tough game at home to West Ham tonight. I reckon Villa v Southampton will be a draw. I would say that both Villa and Southampton are two of the most unpredictable teams to call in the top filght.
-

Yeh, now you’ve gone and done it. Last minute own goal incoming. Thanks, thanks a lot. JON
-
On the plus side Ings won't be scoring for them.
Unless he scores an own goal ;)
-
1-1 a tight game against a permanently underestimated team. Ings for us
-
High on the team talk hopefully...do not to concede any soft free kicks within shooting distance or near our penalty area. Someone has a good track record against us.
-

We don't need no Ivo Stas thing.

No Slovak stoppers, always injured.

The screening was indeed part of the Covid protocols but was removed at last game. Players arrive on coach between 12.15 and 12.45 usually and just before the opposition

Best not play Luiz then, that's his speciality.

Thank you both.

9 changes to the cup side tonight. Shame. I was hoping for a full blooded cup tie at West Ham, a sending off and a couple of injuries. We will just have to beat them another way.

This s mental. Southampton are in no danger of relegation so why not play your strongest team?

There 14 points away above 18th, they really have no chance of going down. I do hate it when teams don’t play a strong team in the cup, especially teams in mid table who have nothing else to play for.
As for Saturday, feels like it’ll be tough, bit Southampton do throw in some poor results now and again.
We owe them one at villa Park and the bad run at home against them can’t go on forever. A good old fashioned
2-1 Villa (Watkins, Ings) with both forwards scoring.

It drives me insane, but I guess we're baised as we havent won an FA cup since the 90s (or someother crazy stat).
-
Inexplicable putting out a weak team when no chance of relegation or Europe.
-
Didn't seem to cause them any problems tonight.
-
Indeed, they put out a half and half team and comfortably beat West Ham who were mostly at full strength.
Make no mistake they're bang in form and this is usually a very difficult match up for us.
That said got the feeling we'll come out firing and they won't be able to handle Coutinho and we'll run out 3-1 winners.
Our main problem v these is we always concede an early goal and have to start chasing the game which plays into their style so need to avoid that. Think this would be really good game for Sanson to start aswell.
Really like the look of Borja who they have upfront. If they haven't agreed a fixed fee with Chelsea, I'd be straight in with a bid end of season as fits the profile of what we need upfront. They can have Ings back.
-
Are there any plans by the club to show support for Ukraine prior to the game on Saturday?
-
I think there is a PL lead initiative, including something on the Captains armband. Apologies is this sounds vague, it was on SSP in the pub yesterday and I wasn't quite paying attention.
-
We haven't beaten them at home since Carlton Cole's debut?
About time that changed.
1-0 Villa. Ramsey
-
We're due a game against these where every shot we take, regardless of where it was taken, flies into the top corner.
0-2.
-

He was unplayable that day. I thought we had gotten ourselves a bit of a beast. Dont think he then scored again until the return game against Southampton, which was pretty much the last few weeks of the season.

Pedant alert. He scored in the next home game v Newcastle and then not again until Southampton away in April. In fact, the next person to score in their first two home games for the club was Coutinho.
-
He chested it in if I remember correctly. That season I think I managed to go to every home game, and that Newcastle match was my favourite of the lot.
-
Surely Sanson for Luis,
Ings on the bench
Bailey wide left
-
At least Shane Long scored his first goal in a decade last week so he can leave his bogey team alone for once.
-

By wide left I hope you mean somewhere on Spaghetti Junction.
-
Bailey is way off it at the moment, so no thanks.
-
I reckon it will be the same team.
-
Yeah, he's a dour non-rotater is Gerrard.
-
My first game at Villa Park in a few years, defeat at home to Stoke in the last days of Sherwood's reign being the last one. Really looking forward to it.
-
Was that 0-1 in October '15? Was one of my last VP games for a couple of years too (til the 4-1 win over Wolves).

Yes, think so. It was horrific. Micah Richards was playing at CB next to some fairly random Spanish dude that I'm not sure played for us again. Richards defensive positioning was laughable all game, he nearly scored at the end after it all.
It's not even the worst game I've seen at Villa Park, I was there for an utter snooze fest 0-0 in the last days of DOL's reign v Fulham. Notable only for the bedsheet protest from the Holte End.
-
Watch out for a saints player going down half way through the second half so the manager can get his team to get a drink and instructions. Apparently a regular occurrence.
-
Keep Le Tissier quiet and we have a chance.
What about Mick Channon, he could do lot of damage?

Yes. Believe it or not, goals can change a game.
-
Didn't Shane Long score in the last league game for them?
Feels like he's scored 50% of his career goals v us.
-
It was his first home goal of the decade. First away one any day now...
-
He's scored 6 goals against us, tied with Norwich for the most goals scored against a particular club.

Can we bring the Scottish Cafu on for 5 minutes to see him off?
-
Quite happily see another Matt Cash show of support for fellow Polish team-mate Tomasz Kedziora.
-
Not losing possession in midfield is key tomorrow. They have a good turnover rate and do a lot with it. McGinn et al need to keep it simple.
-
Not a game for Luiz

Anyone got an alternative?

This morning, the fishmonger at our local market* asked me who we were playing tomoz, and when I said Southampton he said 'Oh no, they are awkward bastards to play against!' :-D
*Facebook groupies will have seen the fish I bought. Looking forward to my baked sargo.

Could you also please feed me with poisson, monsieur?

Not sure how easy it will be to find a stream of the game with the Chinese threatening to pull their coverage of the weekend's games.
-
Could you also please feed me with poisson, monsieur?
And me, please. Much obliged.
-
…and me please. Fishy fishy fish 😋
-
Both of my parents love fish and I would love to get some for them if that’s OK BE?
-
Just win at home for the first time in exactly 3 months, Villa!
Pretty please? X
-
Think he'll go with the same starting line up as last week, he said in his post match interviews, he believes the Watkins/Ings will work. Feel more optimistic about the match after last week, going 2-1 Villa.
-
I wouldn’t mind a stickleback or two please BE.
