It's been a day for delays.

All good Dave, the question I have is why he picked Ings, what made Gerrard believe that after all those games of playing them together and failing that suddenly they would click. It makes no sense whatsoever. Luiz should be dropped but won't be. Relieved more than happy,

Well put.

Can anyone more technically savvy than me please explain why the Watkins/Ings partnership doesn’t work?

I was quite excited when we signed Ings. I envisaged Watkins, with his energy, pressing and pulling defenders out of position allowing Ings to find space in the penalty area where he can be lethal

For some reason it doesn’t seem to have happened

Any ideas?

Danny Ings just looks rubbish to be honest. Much older than his years and slow.

But in his last 3 seasons at Saints he averaged 20 league goals

Surely players at that level don’t become rubbish just because they are one year older

Have a look at my comments on the Ollie thread - Ings looks to pass to Ollie when possible, I don't see much evidence of it being reciprocal.

I'm shocked at how he's been. I want to see him running the channels, holding the ball up, getting into goalscoring positions but there's none of that.

No he hasn't. In the last 3 seasons his league goals were 12, 22 and 7, an average of 13.6.  That's once exceptional year, one decent year, and one below par year. Before that he was injured a lot of the time, but really, at the age of 29 he's only had the one really good season in the top flight. If we're honest, his signing was an emergency measure to placate the fans after the sale of Grealish. We needed another striker, but he wasn't the right choice really.

hindsight is a wonderful thing.

When Ings signed people wasn't saying it wasn't the right choice.

Expensive signings are always exciting. We're not paid huge salaries to get these things right.

Neither have the ability to play as a 10, So they are both trying to play their versions of a number 9 which mean they are getting in each other’s way or having to change the way they play to accommodate the other.
