Title: Aston Villa v Yorkshire Whites 9th February 8pm. Pre Match Thread.
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on February 03, 2022, 08:40:23 PM
Surely we can beat these.  As long as the play actor isn’t playing we should win.  2-1.  Coutinho and McGinn.

Things people would never say. ‘No one ever mentions how good that Bielsa fella is.’

Super John, Tyrone header and a Coutinho belter in the 90th minute to seal the deal

They can be unpredictable, ranging from brilliant to crap. Us less so and we have a resilience evident last time out. After a long break, the fans will be champing at the bit so expect a good atmosphere under the lights and a good out come.

3-1

An age since we've played, but 2 friendlies and a mini-preseason hopefully means we've adopted more of Gerrards ideas.

It picks itself now, but I wouldn't be upset if Ings got the nod over Watkins.  Hopefully after his minutes for Brazil Coutinho will be right up to speed and it will be fantastic to have a fit and firing Berty back on the bench.

As long as Lee bastid Chapman is out for them and Gary Mac doesn't get all misty-eyed watching his old team, we should be gobbling-up the three points here.

They come into this after a very up and down set of results ranging from  7-0 spanking by Cite£ to a brilliant win away to an inform West Ham then followed up with a dross loss at home to Newcastle

A very tight 2-1

Buedia + Watkins for us then a late Raphinia free kick to make us all sweat way to much

I'm thinking similar algy. Have to keep an eye on Raphinha, but with Bamford out they don't have much up front. 4-0.

That’s if Raphina is even fit having gone off injured for Brazil. Phillips is also a continuing injury doubt. So with Bamford seemingly out for sure we won’t have a better chance to beat them. We have to get into them straight away but as they have proven as recently as the game at home vs Newcastle they are not the same high energy side, and everybody’s second team (my arse) that came up.

Yorkshire Whites? Yorkshire Whites Only more like. Marching On Together have set themselves the thankless task of trying to stamp out racism at Leeds for over 30 years without much success. See the Leeds Salute. Leeds are a strange club, a rugby league town that draws in support from former mining villages and very long in the tooth glory hunters from Scandinavia. I can't think of another club whose fans are everywhere when they're winning but disappear or go back to supporting Leeds Rhinos when they're shit, which is most of the time. Not that they're even loyal to Leeds Rhinos. You'll rarely see 'Leeds' and 'loyal' in the same sentence.

They're massively weird. They did a 'Sevco' back in the day and got chucked out of the league for dodgy payments, reformed, did nothing till Revie turned up and made them dress like facists (well, the facists favourite team anyway) and were simultaneously brilliant, despicable, successful and a bunch of bottle merchants.

The first time I encountered them was at home in our promotion season in 88, a match that had to be all ticket because even in that climate their fans were significantly worse than everyone else's.

I went to that one. 7.50 on the Holte as I remember. Still had the ticket stub until I chucked away a load of stuff by mistake before I moved to aus, including both league cup final tickets.

Same here. I remember in the queue into Wembley car park I let a minibus full of whites from Yorkshire nudge in my lane and told them that that was the only thing they are getting today as I was totally confident we will win. Of course a load of abuse was bellowed towards me  but hey as expected we thrashed them.

One of them didn’t take too kindly to my comment when purchasing a programme outside: “oh £5 - same as last time we were here (1994 obvs) - bet you can’t say that”. Wanted to batter me. I put it down to the 5pm ko. Luckily I was able to move away in the crowd.

We were in St. Jospeh's pre-match. Great atmosphere and everyone just seemed sure we'd win, it was really striking.

As chrisw1 mentions the Leeds fans were fine that day. My uncle and I were getting tube tickets to head north after the game when the Met emptied a train full of Leeds fans into the narrow tunnel we were in. They were doing the 'Leeds, Leeds, Leeds' chant as they passed us but tbf that was all despite the result.

Super Leeds in the seventies where big in Scandinavia.  From late sixties onwards we got a TV match from the English 1. div every Saturday 4 o clock. We didnt have anything like it, big impact for generation(s). Super Leeds with Billy Bremner? Peter Lorimer, Allan Clarke and some else stood out in those formative years for some. My self never liked their supporters in Scandinavia much. I think Gerrard set us up solid defensively so they cant get too much opportunities with their high pressure game. 2-1-to us; Couthino 33, Watkins 63, them 65.

That makes a lot of sense and to their credit they're probably the most loyal of the Leeds fans. The thing that really confuses me is I know loads of Leeds fans having lived up there. They're all still great mates but as soon as football is mentioned they suddenly turn into neanderthals who can only spit out one word, 'Leeds. Leeds' and they're all hard as nails and aggressive with it. Hilarious stuff. Maybe being a one town team who carry its name in a country that rarely talks about the place adds to their split personality, I don't know but they're a real strange and sad lot.

John e points out they're only four points behind us which I think reflects more on our poor season than theirs as they've had a long list of injuries with a small squad throughout most of the season. Fortunately Gerrard has come in and given us a bit of steel and organisation. If we can now start improving in front of goal we will be far too much for them but the least I expect is for them to make us work hard for the points.

No Premier League game is easy, but on current form we should really be winning this comfortably.

The lack of distance between us in the table is much more to do with how bad we were towards the end of the Smith era than it is to do with Leeds being decent.

I remember a group of their fans fighting some of ours on the road outside the holte end after the game had kicked off. Could see it from the upper end of the Holte where i used to stand when were kicking towards the North Stand.

Things I'd like to see on Wednesday:

- A good straightforward, no messing about shoeing of these arseholes. Minimum 2-0 please.
- No mistakes from the defence and a clean sheet

78% going for a Villa win, which is a bit worrying, even so I still think we'll do it, going 2-1.
I don't think our poll will actually affect the outcome 😉 tough game obviously but I'm backing us to win by two clear goals.

Things I'd like to see on Wednesday:

- A good straightforward, no messing about shoeing of these arseholes. Minimum 2-0 please.
- No mistakes from the defence and a clean sheet
- Watkins or Ings playing well and scoring
- A masterclass from Coutinho

Villa KPIs must be met.

Score early and the crowd will smell blood - and quite rightly so. They made us look like mugs last season at home

The ridiculous bit about it was we played quite well in the game but they were just utterly ruthless. They absolutely deserved to win and could have had about 6 or 7 but we could have had a hatful ourselves.

To be fair to Mings, Bamford had one of those nights where virtually everything he did ended up in the net. I doubt he’ll be that good again in the whole of his career.

I think this, above all the games we've played so far in Gerrard's reign, will give us a good indication of where Gerrard's Villa are today.  Last season's match was a real low point, where Leeds beat us, but for periods of that game they also put in more effort than we did. We weren't terrible, but we were well beaten.

I for one am really looking forward to seeing what we can do now we're not only matching teams for effort, but often putting in more than they do.  Leeds' biggest advantage is their work-rate, match that and we'll beat them.  I think our quality is better than theirs, so I'm hopeful of a really positive result.

We generally haven't started games well under Gerrard so that needs to be addressed in front of a packed VP. Get into them and we will win. Allow them to take any kind of control, even though they have key players missing leads to a long and frustrating night. We have a lot of talent now and some confident players on the back of some decent results. We need to take full advantage of this stretch of games.

I know a lot hate him on here, but I don't think there's much between Ollie and Bamford in terms of quality. He's a better finisher, Watkins possibly has more to his all-round game but overall Bamford might actually be the in-between fit of Ings and Watkins that we're looking for.

Think we'll win this 3-1.

Would fancy us to dominate midfield with Phillips out and can't see them handling Coutinho + Buendia. I bet Bielsa will try to man mark Coutinho but given the form Emi 2 is in he can hurt Leeds with the space he gets. Just hope Ollie is awake for this as he will get decent chances, think he scores at least once.

This should be our most comfortable win for them in a long while.

Actually the main game on BT sport 1 I think hence the 8pm kick off.

I think they're holding off rescheduling the away game due to BT wanting that played midweek aswell.

Could've played it this weekend gone but we'd have needed another winter break playing Leeds twice in four days.

Tricky but one we could do with winning.

It's all about establishing ourselves in top 10 over next few weeks.

Leicester got Liverpool away so will surely lose that so win and we're back in 10th. Then 4 points minimum from Newcastle and Watford and perhaps we can close in on Wolves who have Arsenal and Spurs up next.

Would be disappointing if we get to March and we're still 11th or 12th.

I am glad Newcastle won last night - if they had lost dismally then they will win eventually with the money they have spent and it could of been against us. I think they will feel confident but they are still shite

Really looking forward to this, 18 days it feels more like 18 weeks since we last played. With Bamford, Phillips and Cooper all out their main man is Raphinha, I understand he got good reviews, when he played for Brazil last week. If Buendia and Phil are on top form, I'm pretty confident of a win, would expect it'll be the same starting 11 as at Everton, having said that no doubt we will find out someone is out due to an unexpected injury!

Other than very early in the season against Newcastle, i don’t recall a really comfortable win this season. Leeds are unpredictable, beating West Ham away, losing to Newcastle at home. But i would love this to be a lovely easy 3-0, with a couple of early goals and one just after half time to kill it.
