This year's contenders announced. https://www.bbc.com/sport/sports-personality/59607666
Not the most inspiring list but Tyson Fury would be my pick.
-
I really dislike this programme, which I've always thought of as being a sports programme for people who aren't actually that keen on sport. But there's surely only one winner, Emma Raducanu.
-
Daly? Sterling? Fury who did not want to be included yet no Hamilton, no Cavendish, no Kenny? Nonsense
-
Has to be Emma.
-
Peaty is overwhelmingly the most accomplished athlete on that list, he's miles ahead of anyone else in his sport holding, currently, the 16 fastest times in the history of the event.
I don't have an issue with Raducanu being in the list, she's had a great year, but there's no chance her achievements are ahead of Peaty given it's an olympics year where we demolished his own event and led the medley team to a massive upset as well.
-
Can’t argue with that. The only thing I will say is that what Emma achieved has never been done in the history of tennis by anyone anywhere.
-
I think it would be very cool to have Sarah Storey win, as a recognition of an astonishing career and to help the "normalisation" of Paralympic sport.
Sterling was average (I'm being kind there, shit would be a more accurate term for him tapping in a few goals from about 3 yards out whilst butchering many moves in the Euros).
Fury impressive but a bit of a twat.
Peaty exceptional, no problem with him winning it either.
Raducanu, very impressive achievement, but I'd be inclined to see if she follows it up - she did well at Wimbledon, and obvs the US Open, but was anonymous in the other tournaments.
Tom Daley - no idea why he is there above any other Olympic gold medal winner. Seems a nice guy, but can't say his achievements mark him out above Storey, Peaty, Raducanu or Fury.
-
It will probably be Emma, but it should be Fury or Peaty.
Would be lovely if Sarah Storey won

That's a fair summary. Based on the hoopla around Strictly Peaty comes across as a bit of a tw@t although I'm aware many feel the same way about Fury.

Before the shortlist was named, Fury was threatening to sue the Beeb if he was included, now he is one of the contenders, wonder if he will now go ahead with his threat.
Cavendish should have definitely been included, Raheem Sterling, you can not be serious.
-
Poor list.
Cav would be my choice, but from those names it can only be Raducanu.
-
Got to have a footballler in there it seems. I do wonder about Daley ahead of all the other Olympic winners. Were they hoping to have an openly gay SPOTY winner because I just can't see him getting the votes to be that. TBH, replace Sterling with Cav and Daley with Kenny and that would be a better list straight off.
-
As an achievement, Raducanu qualifying for, and winning, the US open without losing a set has to recognised. Especially given how poor British womens tennis has been for years. I’d vote for her.

It has been by including her but the bold bit can't come into it really, Andy Murray can be a role model for girls as much as boys. If a lack of role models gives someone a leg up in their chance of winning then Storey would have to be favourite by a long way.

There are a couple of really good people there so between Peaty and her in my eyes. Do they still have the Young category as she will win that one I suspect and someone else will get the main one.
-
Who the hell dressed Alex Scott and Clare Balding for tonight's show? :o
Lineker looking very dapper in contrast, nice suit.
-
Why is Sterling in the list? I genuinely don’t understand.
Emma is too young and the start of her career to win it and she’ll deservedly win it in the future..so for me it has to be Peaty.
-
Coach of the year hahaha.
-

Agree but no real surprise it's Emma as tennis players and cyclists seem to do well in SPOTY.
-
Coach of the year hahaha.
Emma Hayes was more deserving, at least she has won some trophies. SPOTY gets worse by the year.
-
Emma deserved winner, but England and Southgate team/coach of the year, absolute rubbish, they're LOSERS.
-
Tea of the year & coach of the year were both losers….how very English
Surprised lifetime achievement award wasn’t given to the current England batting order.
-
Emma deserved winner,
Not for me, too early in her career.
See also giving knighthoods to athletes before they retire.
-
Emma the deserved winner. Terrible show though, socially distanced, all the presenters looked uncomfortable, canned applause and the awards given to people in isolation. And Southgate just looked like Southgate, stiff and awkward.

Agreed, the show was very flat and I think the Beeb are in danger of over exposing Alex Scott. Liked her when she first came on TV but starting to get sick of seeing her so often.

Disagree there. It’s different, she did something unprecedented so that makes sense for the award.

That's fine, more people agreed with you than me and it happens with SPOTY. But for me more a Princess Anne/Zara Phillips than Steve Redgrave/Tony McCoy type winner.

What nonsense. I happen to not like the programme. But it is Sports Personality OF THE YEAR.

Watt nonsense.

Tyson Fury surely was more deserving of Sports Personality - come through adversity, held on to a title, multi-time world champion.
ER wins one tournament then who knows if she'll carry on or disappear yet?
As for England and Sterling... dear me.
-
Fury shouldn't have even been on the list, 1 fight in the year against a guy he'd already proven he could beat.
Raducanu had a great year, that's impossible to deny but, for me, a big part of er achievements was that she came from nothing at the start of the season to being a major part of the tour now. That's fantastic but it's also exactly the sort of trajectory that the young spoty trophy exists to reward.
Fundamentally the media have created a situation where a handful of sports are held at a higher level than anything else and if someone does well in those they get awards, the only chance for people from other sports to win is the years where everyone else is shit and that means some truly fantastic competitors have missed out of the last few years, Peaty being the most recent. Maybe if we had a 2 week swimming gala every summer that took over the BBC output and was celebrated as the most British thing ever swimmers might stand a chance.
-
I've heard the BBC are next year gonna rename the team and coach of the year awards, the losers of the year awards.
-
I used to enjoy watching this, back in the day. But it's just so cheesy, and the presenters are so dull with hardly any charisma. It reminds me of the BBC's coverage of Glastonbury. Banal.
-
It was immediately noticeable in the team award that only one hadn't won anything, something Southgate acknowledged. Seemed a bit embarrassed by it.
Surprised there hasn't been more support for Storey.
-
The winner should have been Tom Piddock and yet he wasn't even on the shortlist.

Even the one person who's heard of him can't spell his name right! ;)

Poxy autocorrect on a phone. Pidcock. Pidcock.

I suggested her as a potential next Villa manager a couple of months ago and was met by a tumbleweed moment. I may have been ahead of my time, but somewhere, sometime , someone will be brave enough not only to break the SPOTY mould but also the Professional Mens League mould. I just hope that I live long enough to see it.
