Dean will get a great reception from our fans but I'm sure will respond pretty much the same way that Gerrard did at Anfield.

Norwich were good against Man Utd and were unlucky to lose.

This will be a tricky game. 1-1.

Sorry Dean, it will be tough and good luck in your other fixtures (we all need luck when playing the sl6 as 'Penalty Saturday' proved) but, anything less than a Villa win will be disappointing.

I'd not mind a repeat of the corresponding week nine years ago, midweek win 4-1 there and follow that up with a 3-1 win at the weekend. And from that point for it to stop resembling xmas 2012 altogether.

They have improved under Dean, don't play like a relegation side. If our players turn up we will win beacause we have the better players, this is the type of game where Gerrards influence should kick in.

Wont be easy. We never have beaten a dean smith side and he will be out to prove a point.

Have a feeling a high scoring draw 2-2

The concern is how many players may have tested positive and will the only 1 days training have a impact on us?

Hopefully not but its unknown what kind of depleted squad we might have for this.

I would definitely go two up top for this. Ings loves scoring past smith so he should start with ollie

I think nakamba is banned so have luiz has dm with jj and mcginn

No, Nakamba is on 4 bookings alongside a fair few others. I'd definitely play him in this one.

Sanson is a good shout. Played really well bit not sure who u drop? Cant drop jj or mcginn that leaves luiz but luiz looked good Saturday

Think maybe save sanson for saturday againt Burnley as we will need to freshen the squad up

I think he'll make a few changes for tomorrow. We didnt see much of the ball against Liverpool so there might be a few tired legs from that midfield. Sanson and Chucky in for maybe Ramsey, Luiz or Young?
Title: Re: Norwich City v Aston Villa - Pre match thread.
Post by: Drummond on December 13, 2021, 08:41:33 AM
If anyone knows our players' weaknesses it's Smith and Shakespeare. Which means we need a system change to counter it. Defensively minded isn't the way to go here either, no shots on target v Liverpool and hardly a creative player in the park has to be ditched.

I think the fact that Deano and Shakespeare know the Villa squad inside out cancels out the difference in quality between the 2 sets of players. I reckon a draw, wouldn’t even be surprised at a Norwich win, but I don’t think they’ll beat us. 2-2.

The defensive lineup against the scallies was to try and contain the best attacking team in Europe, we won't be as cautious tomorrow.

I'd start Buendia and Sanson as both of them will be wanting to a prove a point or two.

Think Sanson will start one of the next two at least. Buendia to show his class.
They have a number of players out as well so good opportunity. They played well v United so we will need to be on it.

Optimistic 3-1 win

We have a system change from Smith's time. We've ditched the bus-sized hole in our midfield.

For 18-24 months I thought midfield was our weakness. Since Gerrard came in I think it is our strength. It's amazing what a change of manager and tweak of formation can do.

It's what did for Smith, he got bogged down and fixated with trying to fix it, to the detriment of all other elements of our play, and try and try and try as he might, he couldn't do it. We're now a different animal, admittedly a little less flamboyant, and no amount of inside knowledge will stop our 'new' midfield from swarming all over theirs.

First game under Gerrard where we are expecting a win.

It's still early in his plans but it will be interesting to see how we play on the front foot. We've conceded more possession in the last 5 games than we would have liked and now the onus is on us to take the game to them.

Certainly Dean has improved them but they still have issues getting the ball in the net and we've improved on keeping it out.

Just about all of his substitutions since taking over have been replacing a midfielder. Fresh legs in the engine room certainly help.

I think I'm right in saying that this will be the first game we've played under Gerrard against a team beneath us in the table at the time we've played them.  Norwich looked fairly decent against Man United at the weekend, and we are due a draw.  So it's 1-1 for me, which wouldn't be at all a bad result, provided we then go and beat Burnley on Saturday.

The Dean ex-manager knows the players will be a factor, and it will depend on which team gets at the other first.
It will be tight but I think we will edge it.

Keep Puuki quiet and you have put a stop to one of their few players who can score.

I haven't been out drinking in Norwich for five years or more, but I went to uni there, and still have some good friends there, but some of this might be out of date. The Compleat Angler is the closest one to the train station/ground. It's a bit of a dive but would probably do the trick for a couple of quick scoops. If you're going to be there all day, go somewhere better. The Cardinal Wolsey next to the market in town is a nice place, as is the Birdcage in the lanes (you probably wouldn't be welcome if you're wearing colours though - not because it's full of hardcore canaries, it's just a bit arty!) There are obviously plenty of the national chain outfits also.

The Fat Cat on W End St is awesome if you like real ale - CAMRA Pub of the Year several times in the last decade - its a 30 min walk from Carrow Road but my mate has taken me several times and the ale is absolutely fantastic!

It's not called that anymore (I can't remember what it's changed to), but yes, it's excellent. A bit of a trek from Carrow Road though!

Celebrated it's 30th Birthday earlier this month.

Based on Mr Gerrard's 'philosophy' against Liverpool (top team) of 'contain them for 75 minutes and then sneak a goal' I expect us to go for the jugular from the first minute against Norwich (bottom team).

Covid permitting, he will select an attacking team. 1-4 to the mighty boys in C & B.

"I am sure Canaries boss Dean Smith would love to beat Villa after the way his three-year spell there ended, but the reason I am backing Norwich is just down to the way they have improved since he took charge there last month."

It's 1 win in 5 for Norwich under Smith, and of course we haven't improved at all.

Any decent pubs in city centre pre game?

I haven't been out drinking in Norwich for five years or more, but I went to uni there, and still have some good friends there, but some of this might be out of date. I showed him plenty when he was manager. He’s not anymore. And the past year we lost more games under him than any other team (maybe Newcastle came close). He luckily avoided the sack pre Covid for our form, and we had relegation form any time we didn’t have Jack. So while, yes sure thank him for what he did, we’d be in the bottom three if he was still here. So I hope we win tonight at his expense. And by a lot.

Can't speak for TV, but no, a lot because we're Aston Villa and scoring lots of goals is great. Norwich are about the most inoffensive Premier League team ever, so if they can manage to stay up at the expense of Newcastle, Watford or leeds etc, then great. If we put 6 past them, then sorry Dean, but that's football.

No. Nothing to do with Dean Smith. I want us to win by a lot every single game irrespective of who we are playing against or the manager or players who have a Villa link. We need to win tonight and with a -4 GD which in large part came from the tail end of Dean’s time, we need to get that back to positive numbers. So I hope we smash Norwich.

Wasn't that the game where it became mathematically impossible to win the league. I was in the HE for that and I'm sure I remember that being the case.

It was, we had to win our last two and Liverpool pretty much fail to win any of their last three. It did mean we were guaranteed second no matter what else happened, so we could all go and have a nice quiet afternoon at Goodison.

Edited with maths. Before Norwich, we were 2pts behind Liverpool with 2 to play, they had 3 left.

The best scenario would be it's Nakamba since he is injured anyway.

Whoever it is, we should have enough to beat Norwich.   No excuses.

Ladbrokes have put N/A on SJM to score tonight.

Obviously a foregone conclusion!

Sanson will probably have long Covid and never been seen in a Villa shirt again.

After being on the backfoot for much of the last 2 games I'm looking forward to seeing us enjoy some possession.
