Dean will get a great reception from our fans but I'm sure will respond pretty much the same way that Gerrard did at Anfield.
Norwich were good against Man Utd and were unlucky to lose.
This will be a tricky game. 1-1.
-
A tight game that I think we'll Edge.
2-1.
McGinn and Watkins.
-
Sorry Dean, it will be tough and good luck in your other fixtures (we all need luck when playing the sl6 as 'Penalty Saturday' proved) but, anything less than a Villa win will be disappointing.
-
Villa 2 Canaries 0
-
I hope he gets a good reception, but also that we batter them 6-0.
-
Yup.
-
I'd not mind a repeat of the corresponding week nine years ago, midweek win 4-1 there and follow that up with a 3-1 win at the weekend. And from that point for it to stop resembling xmas 2012 altogether.
-
I hope he gets a great reception, and I'm sure he will. A narrow victory for us would be the tasteful outcome.
-
We have to be ruthless, they are bottom for a reason.
-
Can't wait for Deano's pre-match presser. Dish the dirt ;)
-
They played well against Manchester United at the weekend, so don't think this will be an easy game by any means.
-
They have improved under Dean, don't play like a relegation side. If our players turn up we will win beacause we have the better players, this is the type of game where Gerrards influence should kick in.
-
Wont be easy. We never have beaten a dean smith side and he will be out to prove a point.
Have a feeling a high scoring draw 2-2
-
We should win this one - 3-1
Smith will be given an excellent reception by the travelling Villa faithful
-
The concern is how many players may have tested positive and will the only 1 days training have a impact on us?
Hopefully not but its unknown what kind of depleted squad we might have for this.
I would definitely go two up top for this. Ings loves scoring past smith so he should start with ollie
I think nakamba is banned so have luiz has dm with jj and mcginn
-

No, Nakamba is on 4 bookings alongside a fair few others. I'd definitely play him in this one.
-
Sanson to start for me, possibly Ings too with Ollie out wide
-
Sanson is a good shout. Played really well bit not sure who u drop? Cant drop jj or mcginn that leaves luiz but luiz looked good Saturday
Think maybe save sanson for saturday againt Burnley as we will need to freshen the squad up
-
I think he'll make a few changes for tomorrow. We didnt see much of the ball against Liverpool so there might be a few tired legs from that midfield. Sanson and Chucky in for maybe Ramsey, Luiz or Young?
-
If anyone knows our players' weaknesses it's Smith and Shakespeare. Which means we need a system change to counter it. Defensively minded isn't the way to go here either, no shots on target v Liverpool and hardly a creative player in the park has to be ditched.
-
They were impressive against Newton Heath so this will be a lot tougher than many anticipate.
2-2
-
We have a system change from Smith's time. We've ditched the bus-sized hole in our midfield.
-
I think the fact that Deano and Shakespeare know the Villa squad inside out cancels out the difference in quality between the 2 sets of players. I reckon a draw, wouldn’t even be surprised at a Norwich win, but I don’t think they’ll beat us. 2-2.
-
The defensive lineup against the scallies was to try and contain the best attacking team in Europe, we won't be as cautious tomorrow.
I'd start Buendia and Sanson as both of them will be wanting to a prove a point or two.
-
2-0.
-
Think Sanson will start one of the next two at least. Buendia to show his class.
They have a number of players out as well so good opportunity. They played well v United so we will need to be on it.
Optimistic 3-1 win
-
I'd go:
Martinez
Cash Konsa Mings Targett
Sanson McGinn Luiz
Buendia Watkins Ramsey
-
I'd play Sanson tomorrow and leave him out on Saturday, play him against fucking Burnley and we'll never see him again.
-
Can't wait for Deano's pre-match presser. Dish the dirt ;)
Why? We're Aston Villa first and foremost and our results have improved since the decision to part company.
-
We have a system change from Smith's time. We've ditched the bus-sized hole in our midfield.
For 18-24 months I thought midfield was our weakness. Since Gerrard came in I think it is our strength. It's amazing what a change of manager and tweak of formation can do.

It's what did for Smith, he got bogged down and fixated with trying to fix it, to the detriment of all other elements of our play, and try and try and try as he might, he couldn't do it. We're now a different animal, admittedly a little less flamboyant, and no amount of inside knowledge will stop our 'new' midfield from swarming all over theirs.
-
Draw for me. See this as the banana skin of the games we should be winning. They'll be wanting to put on a good show against Dean's old team 1-1.
-
Straightforward 2-0 win. Honestly, Norwich are shit. Two wins all season, and while they seem to have played a bit better under Smith, they haven't won in 4 games, including failing to beat 10 man Newcastle.
-
I wonder what sort of reception their Emi will get.
-
Can't wait for Deano's pre-match presser. Dish the dirt ;)

I know, I'm just a tart for drama.
-
First game under Gerrard where we are expecting a win.
It's still early in his plans but it will be interesting to see how we play on the front foot. We've conceded more possession in the last 5 games than we would have liked and now the onus is on us to take the game to them.
Certainly Dean has improved them but they still have issues getting the ball in the net and we've improved on keeping it out.
-
I imagine he'll say the same sorts of things that Gerrard did on Friday. Just with "yeah, no" instead of "well look"!
-

Just about all of his substitutions since taking over have been replacing a midfielder. Fresh legs in the engine room certainly help.
-
Surely we just need to start with 10 men - Dean's team can never bet a team with 10 men
-
I think I'm right in saying that this will be the first game we've played under Gerrard against a team beneath us in the table at the time we've played them. Norwich looked fairly decent against Man United at the weekend, and we are due a draw. So it's 1-1 for me, which wouldn't be at all a bad result, provided we then go and beat Burnley on Saturday.
-
Surely we just need to start with 10 men - Dean's team can never bet a team with 10 men
That made me chuckle.
-
So 2 out with covid and Marv injured mmmm
-
The Dean ex-manager knows the players will be a factor, and it will depend on which team gets at the other first.
It will be tight but I think we will edge it.
Keep Puuki quiet and you have put a stop to one of their few players who can score.

It was tight against Liverpool and we almost kept them out.
And they are miles ahead of most teams and certainly even an improved Norwich
-
McGinn Luiz Sanson
Buendia Watkins Ramsey
front 6 tomorrow imo
-
mcginn, cash, mings and nakamba all on 4 bookings.
5 booking limit will expire after the chelsea game.
-

Quite the jinx there Risso!

How many covid cases before it’s postponed ?
-
How many covid cases before it’s postponed ?
4+ i reckon.
-
Unless of course you invoke the rule that states that if you have the letter V in your team name you will have play even if it means making up the numbers using players from the under 11’s.
-
Nakamba is out with a knee injury. It doesn't sound good.
-
Tuesday night away at Norwich, Villa end sold out can only mean a 2-0 Villa win. Happy memories of our 1/4 final cup win there.
-
I hope we smash them off the planet and then give Dean a nice round of applause at the end.
-
How patronising !
Best-off doing it pre-game to avoid any awks
-
Unfortunately for Deano,I do fancy us to win quite convincingly.
-
I'm starting to think that Dean will do us over.
-
Norwich have scored 8 goals all season, Villa win 3 - 0
-
I reckon we will win this 2-0.
-
McGinn Luiz Sanson
Buendia Watkins Ramsey
front 6 tomorrow imo
I'm happy with that, pretty mobile. Better teams than Norwich have failed recently in trying to winkle us out of our newfound narrow shell, these certainly won't manage.
-
2-1 Villa. Sutton for them, Houghton and Saunders for us.
-
I wouldn't rule Fox out of getting on the scoresheet.
-
I wouldn't rule Fox out of getting on the scoresheet.
Nice. Sutch is life.......
-
Norwich have scored 8 goals all season
So you're saying they'll batter us 9-0?
That's the Villa Way.
-
2-1 Villa. Sutton for them, Houghton and Saunders for us.
Was that the game where 'The Sun' had published a story on the morning of the game about Sutton having a fling with an older BA stewardess? From what I remember the travelling fans were keen to remind him of it.
-
I wouldn't rule Fox out of getting on the scoresheet.
Nice. Sutch is life.......
The latest Goss I heard is that the game is in doubt cos of the pandemic.
-
We are gonna score goals.
A lot of goals.
-
By hook or by crook think the game will be on
-
No reason not to play it unless the players are Keelan over.
-
Haven’t heard of too many players phelan unwell
-
Any decent pubs in city centre pre game?
-
Hopefully our team bond will see us through.
-
6-0 Villa.
-
1-2 FTF.
-
I'm starting to think that Dean will do us over.
Aye.
Even in the defeats to Citeh and Liverpool we played reasonably well. We're about due a shite 'un.
-

It's what would normally happen as its the Villa way of things.
We might be pleasantly surprised though..
-
Indeed, this is not the time to be benevolent Villa. Get ahead, stay ahead, get further ahead!
-
Any decent pubs in city centre pre game?
I haven't been out drinking in Norwich for five years or more, but I went to uni there, and still have some good friends there, but some of this might be out of date. The Compleat Angler is the closest one to the train station/ground. It's a bit of a dive but would probably do the trick for a couple of quick scoops. If you're going to be there all day, go somewhere better. The Cardinal Wolsey next to the market in town is a nice place, as is the Birdcage in the lanes (you probably wouldn't be welcome if you're wearing colours though - not because it's full of hardcore canaries, it's just a bit arty!) There are obviously plenty of the national chain outfits also.
-
So who are the 2 Covid casualties, you can bet one of them is Sanson.
-
As long as it's not Emi The First.
-
Buendia red card has got potential
-
Based on Gerrard saying, "there will be opportunities for other people to come in and help us", I don't think it's unreasonable for me to leap to the conclusion one of El Ghazi, Chukwuemeka and Trez will start.
-

Knowing our luck, Mings and Konsa.

The Fat Cat on W End St is awesome if you like real ale - CAMRA Pub of the Year several times in the last decade - its a 30 min walk from Carrow Road but my mate has taken me several times and the ale is absolutely fantastic!

It's not called that anymore (I can't remember what it's changed to), but yes, it's excellent. A bit of a trek from Carrow Road though!

Celebrated it's 30th Birthday earlier this month.

Ah! My mistake.
-
Covid; McGinn and Luiz is my bet.
-
Lawro going for a Canaries win . I thought he'd been put out to grass.
-
Covid scuppers any serious prognosticating here. Not only players out but training called off. 2-3 to us but really no idea. The never fecking ending story.
-
3-0 Villa, don’t care who scores. Surprised some on here are doing down our chances against the bottom team with a manager most on here wanted rid of as not being good enough a month ago. They’re were they are for a reason
-
I fear this one a bit. Not sure why, just have an uneasy feeling.
-
I thought Norwich played well against Man U, we need to be prepared for a hard game
-
Based on Mr Gerrard's 'philosophy' against Liverpool (top team) of 'contain them for 75 minutes and then sneak a goal' I expect us to go for the jugular from the first minute against Norwich (bottom team).
Covid permitting, he will select an attacking team. 1-4 to the mighty boys in C & B.
-
I thought Norwich played well against Man U, we need to be prepared for a hard game
yep they looked lively they will be a threat . i think we will draw
-
Lawro going for a Canaries win . I thought he'd been put out to grass.
That's good news!
-
Lawro going for a Canaries win . I thought he'd been put out to grass.
"I am sure Canaries boss Dean Smith would love to beat Villa after the way his three-year spell there ended, but the reason I am backing Norwich is just down to the way they have improved since he took charge there last month."
It's 1 win in 5 for Norwich under Smith, and of course we haven't improved at all.
-
Lawro going for a Canaries win . I thought he'd been put out to grass.
Of course he did!
-
Always think Lawrensen used to be quite complimentary about Villa, until we beat Liverpool 7-2.
-
Who listens to this bloke? He’s the day before yesterday’s man for heavens sake.

Like Garth Crooks too. The BBC really need to up their game with stuff like this.
-
Glas no leaks on the players missing. Its better that way keeps smith and Norwich guessing
-

No leaks to press perhaps. But Smith will have an idea and there won't be any surprises re players. He knows them all.
I reckon this could be a tricky one.
-
Live on BT Sport 2 as well, coverage from 7.15

That's why we should start with Sanson, Deano won't know what to expect.

Compleat Angler went home fans only a couple of seasons back.

Covid; McGinn and Luiz is my bet.
Dougie posted training pics on Insta, so I don't think it's him.
-
I’m finally looking forward to seeing Dean’s “I have no fucking idea what do” touch line look as his side his 2-0 down after 15 minutes.
-
I guess if we sacrifice a player with a red card offence that injures Pukki so he has to go off we'll be sorted.
-

What's the betting we actually see some tactical genius game management out of him?

If he doesn't know our weak spots then shame on him. I'm thinking this will be a damp squib 0-0.

It was BT 3 yesterday. But now it's changed, I presume as a result of the Burnley match being postponed. BT 3 is now showing an Ashes re-run.
-
Martinez has tweeted "game day" so hopefully not him with Covid
-
I’m finally looking forward to seeing Dean’s “I have no fucking idea what do” touch line look as his side his 2-0 down after 15 minutes.
Or you could just show some respect to a man who left our club in a far better position than he found it
-
Yeah, I'll take no pleasure in any discomfort we may cause Dean.

I showed him plenty when he was manager. He’s not anymore. And the past year we lost more games under him than any other team (maybe Newcastle came close). He luckily avoided the sack pre Covid for our form, and we had relegation form any time we didn’t have Jack. So while, yes sure thank him for what he did, we’d be in the bottom three if he was still here. So I hope we win tonight at his expense. And by a lot.

A lot because it's Dean Smith?
-

I would like to think that other than Martinez we have adequate cover in each area of the pitch
I too would like to see Sanson get a full game
-
I hope we win every match by a lot.
-
Can't speak for TV, but no, a lot because we're Aston Villa and scoring lots of goals is great. Norwich are about the most inoffensive Premier League team ever, so if they can manage to stay up at the expense of Newcastle, Watford or leeds etc, then great. If we put 6 past them, then sorry Dean, but that's football.

Absolutely this, I interpreted the wording as it was because of Dean. Which surprised me.
-
On M11. Why Norwich on a Tuesday night?
-
We'll more than match Norwich for effort, we just need to demonstrate our superior quality.
Three points, please.
-
My dad and me consider that the 3-3 draw at VP in April 1990 was the moment we finally knew that we weren't going to win the league. I still remember Rosario slotting their third, and equaliser, at the Holte. Since that game Norwich are to be battered whenever possible.

Norwich took six 6 pts off us in the first Prem League season - in which admittedly they themselves finished third - so they as much as anyone else contributed to our failed title bid that year.

2 things i noticed Cascarino dribbled the ball ! and that through ball by Sid ❤️

I remember that really well, I was stood right behind the goal rather in our normal location right of centre at the back.
I knew we shouldn't have changed places.
-

Hopefully Tuanzebe and Davis
-
Yeah, I'll take no pleasure in any discomfort we may cause Dean.
I'll take pleasure in us winning the game. I'm sure he will if Norwich manage to beat us.
Of course I want to win and win handsomely, but I'll feel for Dean if so.
Whereas should we give a shellacking to a side managed by Guardiola, Klopp, Mourinho, Dyce and many, many others, I would take added joy from the personal torment we've caused them.
-

I've heard from a decent source its Martinez and Konsa.
I just hope that's wrong. I did question it as Martinez had tweeted about the game tonight.

No. Nothing to do with Dean Smith. I want us to win by a lot every single game irrespective of who we are playing against or the manager or players who have a Villa link. We need to win tonight and with a -4 GD which in large part came from the tail end of Dean’s time, we need to get that back to positive numbers. So I hope we smash Norwich.

The best scenario would be it's Nakamba since he is injured anyway.
Whoever it is, we should have enough to beat Norwich. No excuses.
-
Let's be up for it right from the start, don't want to see another first half display like the Leicester match. Going 2 nil Villa.
-
*sips coffee out of the Dean Smith mug I lovingly crafted in tribute with my own hands*
I hope we smash them into oblivion.
-
We could do with really cutting loose against somebody. Buendia would benefit from a blinding performance woth a couple of net stretchers, as could Ings. Let it be tonight, please.

Ladbrokes have put N/A on SJM to score tonight.

Dean will get a great reception from our fans but I'm sure will respond pretty much the same way that Gerrard did at Anfield.
Norwich were good against Man Utd and were unlucky to lose.
This will be a tricky game. 1-1.
yep, I'd echo that. First draw of the Gerrard era coming up.

The best scenario would be it's Nakamba since he is injured anyway.
Whoever it is, we should have enough to beat Norwich. No excuses.
Ladbrokes have put N/A on SJM to score tonight.
Hasn't he already had it? I don't really follow the local news here due to limited Spanish so I don't know whether it's landed here yet. It seems that it's is ripping through the UK at the minute. Two of my friends have messaged to say they have it

I’ve heard Konsa and Keenan. No idea how reliable.

Konsa very; Keinan not so.

I’m finally looking forward to seeing Dean’s “I have no fucking idea what do” touch line look as his side his 2-0 down after 15 minutes.
Or you could just show some respect to a man who left our club in a far better position than he found it
I showed him plenty when he was manager.
Well yes, agree with hoping we smash everyone. Just wouldn't want to embarrass him. 0-3 would be nice.

My dad and me consider that the 3-3 draw at VP in April 1990 was the moment we finally knew that we weren't going to win the league. I still remember Rosario slotting their third, and equaliser, at the Holte. Since that game Norwich are to be battered whenever possible.

2 things i noticed Cascarino dribbled the ball ! and that through ball by Sid ❤️
It had the lot. God scoring, Platt scoring, Cascarino scoring his first of not many, Mountfield own goal. Nice sunny day...

Haha, very good.

Aaron Ramsey is 11/1 to score on Bet365 🤔

Ha! I heard Mings and Cash but I guess we'll know for sure in an hour or so.

Wasn't that the game where it became mathematically impossible to win the league. I was in the HE for that and I'm sure I remember that being the case.

I was at this one. We were the better side and should have won.
-
I was also at that one. It was in my clubbing period so the memory is perhaps a tad hazy, but I seem to remember it was “really starting to sink in” time, rather than the first indication we might not win it.
Edit: just read your post again Martyn and seems we are in agreement.

On M11. Why Norwich on a Tuesday night?
I feel for their fans, they have a similar slap pretty much anywhere they go. Even their local rivals are 40 miles away..
-
I have memories of them time wasting from really early on in the game. For the life of me I can't recall the sequence of scoring, did they go two up?

It was, we had to win our last two and Liverpool pretty much fail to win any of their last three. It did mean we were guaranteed second no matter what else happened, so we could all go and have a nice quiet afternoon at Goodison.
Edited with maths. Before Norwich, we were 2pts behind Liverpool with 2 to play, they had 3 left.

Looks like Steer and Sanson have Covid-19

Obviously a foregone conclusion!

No El Ghazi either.
Very young bench.
-
Sanson then.
-
Sanson will probably have long Covid and never been seen in a Villa shirt again.

After being on the backfoot for much of the last 2 games I'm looking forward to seeing us enjoy some possession.
