We need to play a decent side to give players a chance to have game time and get fit. Would rest SJM, Mings, Martinez, Ash and Cash. Bring in Targett, Freddie, Axel, Sanson or Bailey if available. Play the kids also.
I’ll go 3-0 - goals from Buendia, JPB and Ings

I would definitely have a few stronger players on the bench just in case as a defeat would be a absolute disaster and a huge embarrassment
-
I really want to see Chukwuemka, I was hoping he'd get 20 minutes today.
-
in front of a TV audience I can't see DS letting this slip
-
Buendia doesn't look match fit yet, to me. I'd be tempted to start him and sub him after an hour or so.
Steer
Guilbert
Tuanzebe
Hause
Targett
Carney Chukwuemeka
Hourihane (c)
Philogene-Bidace
Buendia
Bailey (if fit, otherwise maybe Aaron Ramsey)
Wesley
Edit: forgot about Guilbert.

Yes, quite like that team, 4-1 win
-
There will be a few of the U23s involved.
-
If I was DS I would be treating this game as almost like an. extra pre-season opportunity and play as many of the available "first team" players as possible. Still think we are off the pace in the gelling department. It is only August after all, so tiredeness shouldn't be an excuse and people shouldn't need resting.
-

Probably why some of them haven't gone out on loan yet. I would have Ramsey (A), Archer and Bogarde involved in the squad. I would go with -
Steer
Tuanzebe
Bogarde
Hause
Targett
Chukwuemeka (the younger)
Ramsey (the younger)
Philogene-Bidace
Buendia
Archer
Wesley
Take Buendia off after an hour.
-
I'd like to confuse the commentators. Play both Chukwuemekas and both Ramseys. Sadly we let Brad Young out on loan, as I'd have put him and Ash in the side too. Resign Luke and Stefan on a one game contract too. Bring back Louie Barry, resign Gareth Barry.
Job done.

I did wonder if Cam Archer had played away at Barrow when he was at Solihull Moors - he didn't befire anyone else looks it up.
Had he done so then he could have given the squad the heads up on the ground, facilities dressing rooms and style of play at Holker Street - it's going to be a real shock to some of our players.
Fully expect Barrow to try and unsettle our younger players.

There are 3 Ramsey brothers, plus all the above with Mings and Ings on the bench.

Riochs and Littles.
-
Steffan and Luke Moore.

Pick a strong side, get minutes in the legs and take the competition seriously. It’s about time we rightfully reclaimed the League Cup.
-
Steer
Guilbert Axel Hause Targett
A Ramsey, Nakamba, Chuk
Buendia Wesley Bidance
-
Is that a guess or ITK?
-
Also, reminds me I forgot Guilbert in my team lineup earlier.
-
Is that a guess or ITK?
I'll find out tomorrow.

Yep. Want to see us have a good crack at both cup competitions this season.
-
Riochs and Littles.
The new niche fanzine site to rival Heroes and Villains.
-
I'm all for seeing a few of the young kids and fringe players getting a game, but I also want this competition taken seriously. Losing to Barrow because we played a side with an average ago of 21 would be embarrassing.
Dean has said some of the players are still 'undercooked', so I want every single one of those players starting.
-
4-0 Villa win.
-
I would go really strong for first 45 - 60 mins then make changes
As been said - it would go somewhere to making up for the crappy pre season (no blame to Villa of this)
Steer (as we know what Emi can do)
Targett (Needs fitness)
Axel
Hause
Guilbert
Nakamba
Buendia (Needs fitness)
Chuck
Sanson (Surely he is ready for some game time)
JPB
Wesley
Hopefully on Bench
Sinisalo
Bogarde
Bailey (needs more minutes)
McGinn
Ramsey x 2
Archer (although they may not want him cup tied if they have loan plans for him)
Get 2 or 3 up (and thats not being arrogant we really should make short work of this) then bring the first teamers off
-
interesting to see wesley ,looked lively when he came on against toon , i thought
-
As it's a Tuesday game there's plenty of rest before Brentford and then a big break after. I'd be playing a strong team as a lot of them still need minutes. But no way would I be risking Bailey if he had a muscle tweak and Cash may need treatment on his ankle. I'd prob rest Luiz or just give him 50-60 mins if the medical team think he's revovered ok and the gametime would be good for him.
Steer
Tuanzebe Konsa Hause Targett
Chukwuemeka Luiz Ramsey (J)
Buendia Ings JPB
If we're doing well I'd want to give Wes 30 mins at least.
Much as I'd like to see a last game for Hourihane, I'd take sentimentality out of it and give minutes to current and future players not departing ones.
-
I thought this was on Wednesday for some reason.
I think he'll mix it up a bit and throw in the likes of Chucky, JPB, Tuanzebe etc and give game time to those that need it most.
-
We know he's going to make changes, the question is how many. Too risky to change all 11 I think. Championship clubs play their reserves in this competition as well but presumably Barrow will play their first team. This could be the first step on the road to our next trophy. Don't fuck it up Dean.

I'd go with that, but stick Tuanzebe in the centre and Guilbert at right back.

The Villa pub in Elephant & Castle are showing it.
-
There are a lot of South American fans around the Elephant. Standing room only when there is a Colombian game on. Maybe Emi is the big draw

Maybe, but I think we'll let Guilbert go and if that's the intention I'd prob let Konsa have the minutes. If the plan is to keep him then yes, I'd definitely like to see him play.
Sounds like Buendia is in the Argentina squad and given they may have 3 games during the break I'd probably think about reducing his minutes on Tues.
-
I'd start Wes, wouldn't risk Ings with the injury problems with the other forwards and it'll be a good work out for Wes. I'd expect us to have enough to beat them with that team otherwise, agree on Guilbert for Konsa too.
-

Good point. The old shopping centre was full of little independent shops run by Latin Americans. I'm not sure if the redevelopment of the area (including shopping centre) and the pandemic has screwed them.

Pretty much agree with this, apart from Luiz who has had so much football, he may be tempted to keep McGinn in.

Hopefully should be enough to see them off. Make sure we've got a pretty strong bench, though. Really think we should be taking a proper shot at both cups this season.
-
Please don't take it lightly, this above all seasons recently, I'd like us to win a cup.
-

Indeed. I'd love it if we won both domestic cups (presumably alongside a mid-table finish as we're not going any higher) while seeing Man City as runners-up in both the league and Champions league and winning jack - pun initially unintended. That would be nice.
-
My attempt to call this game 'The Peter Withe Derby' doesn't seem to have caught on.
The Young Ones Rik - "Honestly I don't know why I bother sometimes".
The Young Ones Vyvyan - "I don't know why you bother ever"!
-
Don’t think the performance matters much tonight but the result does
25 years without a major trophy is just ridiculous
-
I think we will see Chucky and Bidface tonight which would please me.
-
I have no idea what time to set off for this.

I'm on coach from VP and that's not leaving till 14:45......seems too late to me that does.

Google says about 4 hours in a car.... So yes, that's tight! I'd double check it's not going at 12.45
-
As well as former Villa player Dimetri Sea, Barrow also have both Mark Lillis and Simon Grayson's sons playing for them.
-
Good luck to all those travelling up today. Safe journeys and enjoy the game.
-
Please don't take it lightly, this above all seasons recently, I'd like us to win a cup.
To be fair, I remember being at Wembley in 2020 and seeing us lose to 1-2 to Citeh.

completely off-topic but it's mainly the former, have a look at https://latinelephant.org/ if you want more info.

My first job in London 'on the tools' was at that shopping centre. We converted the top floor from what I believe was previously council offices into a Gala Bingo hall.

We don't really though, do we? It's a cup game, just a win will do with some game time for da yoof.
-
I'd like to see a repeat of the Crewe game from two years ago.
-
We’re not going to be “humiliated” for crying out loud.
This is the standard “no win” situation for us. Everyone laughs at us if we lose, no credit at all if we win.
We just need a good run out, a win, and get out.
-
Just checked. My holidaying brother's still not cancelled his Now sky sports. Marvellous.
-
Remember someone posting on the forum a year or two back with a location that was something like:
"Underneath the waves in a grey deadly killing machine"
Wonder if his "home" had been built in Barrow?
-

Any loss in any capacity to barrow is humilation. You cant try dismiss that we wont lose but it sometimes happens.
Obviously its unlikely and we should win easily but shocks do happen

That is exactly what the doctor is ordering. Barrow apparently play expansive game too

Humiliation was the relegation season.

Exactly the teams alot better this year so thats why its worse if we lose tonight. Lets hope we win with ease.
I really hope big wes starts and gets a goal to boost his confidence

0-2 Villa

The biggest disconnect between fans and club is the cup games
And it’s the same for every club in the Premier League
Fans want to win trophies, managers and management teams aren’t that bothered
They would take a higher league position than a trophy as is proved When the team sheets are read out
Most teams fuck about in the early stages and then if they’re lucky enough to get through like we were a couple years ago they start taking it seriously in the semi-final stage
Whatever team we put out tonight we should be good enough to beat Barrow ffs
Just get through I’m not bothered if we make heavy weather of it or if the performance is not spot-on couldn’t care less just get a win progress to the next round
If we lose they all need turfing out first thing next morning
-

Fans aren't that fussed about the League Cup these days. We like to pretend we're different but in reality we're the same as everyone else and you only have to look at the gates we get for proof. If we lose tonight it'll be forgotten by Saturday.

At this stage you’re right. However, get to the quarter finals and I think it gets a more important competition to most
-
Games like this are one of the few chances to give some of the youngsters and fringe players in a proper competitive games. If we don’t try them here then when?
-
No Wesley tonight
-
Big beaming grin!
-
It's a very inexperienced team. I hope Deano hasn't gone too far.
-
I've never been to Barrow before, which would feel the same as saying I've never been to a town 15 minutes after a thermo nuclear detonation. Jay-sus.
Reminds me of Grimsby away in the FA Cup in the 90s only less affluent.

I think so. Realistically it's a competition we could win even if Man City have a recent monopoly. As a club, we have to be looking to win things, rather than shrugging our shoulders. Also it's a way into Europe even if nowadays it's the Conference one.

The last time we got to a semi-final a lot of posters on here were hoping we would lose as it was a distraction. That's how important it is.

Yep thinking about it you're right
it’s probably just me then
but I would want us to win something over league position as long as it wasn’t top four or bottom three were talking about
It’s different times now
