Great end to the season. MOTM Marvellous Nakamba. Absolutely everywhere. We have improvements coming and we will have higher expectations next season. But a great way to finish things off.

There's really something in this team you know. A few key additions, and one extremely key retention, and we really might do something proper.

The gap to the top 6-8 isn’t big. West Ham made that jump comfortably because of better management and good players  who cost a lot of money playing to their potential. We can do that and we have a player that is better than any of theirs. Add 3 or 4 top quality footballers and Jack goes up another level. The defence is top 4.

20 point improvement on last season, whatever people think about the bad run we've improved massively and are very unlucky to not be top half, I can't think of a season where 55 points hasn't been enough before, it's certainly not happened for the last 10 years.

Marv was magnificent, he may be the answer to defensive midfielder next season, maybe just needed to believe in himself a bit more but he was top notch. Three or four good signings and there’s every reason to expect a top eight next year.

Fantastic to finish the season with a couple of great results. The back five were brilliant, SJM and Marvelous fought like lions, Jack looks stronger with every game and Ollie can be forgiven for some loose control as he must be completely knackered given the shift he once again put in.

Thanks, Villa. It's been emotional.

It has been quite a season with a fantastic start and a fantastic finish and a bit up and down in between.

However 20 points better off than last season is quite something.

Some canny purchases in the summer and hopefully we can make a push for the top 6.

Well done Villa. Thanks for an excellent season.

Really enjoyed that. Dodgy first 20 minutes but we really grew into it after. Kind of feel that's the next step for this group of player, to truly believe we can match teams like Chelsea from first minute. 4 points off them this season.

Reminded me of a decade ago when we beat Arsenal and Liverpool right at the end back to back.

I can't quite see things going south like a few weeks after those games! So so much to build on.

By pretty much all metrics we've been very unlucky not to finish in the top 10 this season. Just need to be patient and continue buildinf and it will happen next season.

First 20 mins I thought we were in for a pasting, but McGinn literally dragged us into that game with some crunching tackles and Chelsea did not like it one bit. I thought at 2-0, there was 10 minutes where they lost heart and composure and we could of finished them off, but took our foot of the gas a bit. But great performance. And as Smith said we always finish strongly under him, great to have some belief and momentum for next season.

Nakamba MoM but no one under an 8 for me.

2 or 3 additions and keep Grealish and some special times could be ahead.

Oh and Tuchel was really ungracious in defeat.

A very good season indeed but it could have been even better if we have to take the claret and blue glasses off.
But -
20pts improvement
16 league wins. Even O Neill managed as many as 17 in his four seasons. The difference is his teams could grind out draws a bit better i think.
Six places better off.
Ten points above Wolves - it seems important to them so mind the gap.
We have taken some big scalps- the teams you would want 5i beat although as usual we couldn't even get a point off Man Ure and I really thought this was the year we'd do it.

The future looks v bright.

I was nervous today that we would doff our caps to a team needing three points and not give of our best, and the first 25 minutes didn't impress - almost reminiscent of too many capitulations we have observed over the last decade or so.  But what a transformation, really ground out minute by minute.  Where to begin, really?  What a superb corner kick routine, from Targett and Traore.  The whole back 5, immense.  Nakamba - we have a proper player, here.  El Ghazi - have we ever had a better penalty taker? I could obviously go on...

Our record against the Scab 6 is good, this season - I'm sure someone less lazy than me (Footy?) might be able to put together a league table of the 6+1.

What a great end to the season, and optimism abounds.

Seen this before but, the team today defended like Spartans at the bridge.

We went to sleep a bit leading up to their goal  but Hey Ho.
First time we have beat them for a long time same with those Curs from WHLane, long may these records continue to be broken
Next season, who knows maybe it s time to spank those Reds from Salford

Oh and Tuchel was really ungracious in defeat.

He was ungracious in victory against Leicester the other night, he's firmly in the envelope marked 'bellends'.
He's an absolute tosser. I remember him from Mainz 05. Highly strung whinging fucker.

What's his story with the blind loyalty to Werner? He was a waste of space all game but Tuchel left Giroud and Tammy on the bench.

Thought we rode our luck a lot early on before we settled. Nervy finish as always but great to finish with a win. Nice bit of grit about the defence and Nakamba scrapped very well in front of them. Enjoy the summer one and all

Martinez 8, Konsa 6, Hause 7, Mings 8, Targett 8, Nakamba 8, McGinn 7, Traore 6, Grealish 6, AEG 6, Watkins 6. Deano 8

Superb, fantastic support and amazing noise from 10k fans.

Difficult to know for sure while listening on the telly, but they sounded absolutely brilliant, so well done everyone lucky enough to be there today.  Songs were crystal clear, and the cheering the team on when it was needed was VERY obvious.  This side is going to create some incredible atmospheres where can get 40k of us back in there...

That’s absolutely incredible for a team that finished 5th in the championship 2 seasons ago.

16 points taken from the so-called European Super League teams. We'll fear no-one next season.
This made a big change this season. Usually we just crumble against the bigger teams.

I didn't think we played that well today, but they close down quickly. The defence did well apart from repeatedly letting Chilwell have space. However, mostly I just enjoyed being lucky enough to get back down to VP and it was pretty noisy for 10,000.

Five of those points should have come from Burnley alone.  When we look back at the games where we've deserved a LOT more than we ended up with, you realise how big the improvement is from last year, and how close we are to doing something special with this side.

We beat 14 of the 19 teams in the prem.
Finishing 11th and best points total for 10 years.
Won one of the games of the century at Villa Park.
What could have been if Jack wasn’t out for 12 games.
Martinez player of the season.
Progress from last season year on year.
Beat spuds and chavski in the space of 1 week - take that you money grabbing c****
Where’s this Black Country mind the gap bollucks? Howse that working out currently?
Chucky and Barry could potentially save us £70m in fees and a great platform for next season.
Oh yes and a magnificent performance from nakamba today to contribute in beating the hated chavski.
Thank you Aston Villa Football Club - MY CLUB.

I do. He needed playing time so he went on loan. But Freddie has said it himself and Dean I believe hasn’t suggested selling him. Elmo was a more flexible option to have around this season. With him gone Freddie and Cash is a solid one two. We now need another very good LB

Got a mate who supports West Ham who described him as being like ‘a Lord of The Rings battle scene extra. Ha ha, spot on, he does move jerkily on the touchline like he’s a Tolkien special effect. What a day, what a great result!
We've certainly stepped up this season, so well done to the owners, Dean and his coaching staff and the players.
Marv and Hause were both immense today. We defended brilliantly and were dangerous in attack.
Emi was great and "gets" the Villa! His passion towards the fans after saves or when we scored was great to see. Loved Ollie's 1st touch by the touchline from a high clearance. Pity his second touch saw it go out of play. El Goalzi just keeps scoring.
Interesting to see Jack having a verbal pop at Mount in the 1st half after a challenge in the middle of the park. All's not well there.
Their number 5 is a right theatrical w-nker.
Tuchel is very touchy. His remonstrations with the ref after the final whistle was comical and embarrassing.
We are on an upwards trajectory. I hope when we make it into Europe and the top 4 we don't turn into a chelski and play their version of spoilt brat football.
UTV! Enjoy the Summer...it could be very interesting.

It was disappointing but nevertheless it was a red, he pushed him in the face. In the first half Jorginho or Kovacic (can’t remember which) did much worse when merely obstructed, going don’t clutching his ear. Until refs don’t give things unless a player goes down/makes a meal of it, this will go on.

Was nervy even at 2 zip, never mind 2-1.

They were dangerous in the final third at various stages, but you'd expect nothing less from a team who've spunked so much on attacking players in recent years.

Our final ball wasn't great when we could counter. But those sort of wins show different facets of our character.

Sixteen wins for the first time since the MON years.

When he had far less competition than we see now.

How in Christ's name are Newcastle 12th, BTW.

They looked just about good enough to stay up with the bottom three effectively relegating themselves early doors. But it's odd to see them comfortably numb in midtable.  Another year of Bruceball it is then.

In fairness to spud head they had a brilliant end to their season. Joe Willock looks a super player that they will want to sign from Arsenal. He’s made a massive difference to how they play. I wouldn’t mind him at Villa. He’s a motivated version of Dele Alli the Pirate/Tramp.

Felt like there was a lot more than 10,000 on the gate and the players certainly responded.

The defence is exceptional and even in that sticky opening 20, they looked solid beyond belief.

We're 3 or 4 players shy from something very special. One very happy 6 year old in the car in a post game and Happy Meal stupor. Kept up the tradition of going to the Mordor McDonald's and him flashing his colours about the place.

Unfortunately this is how it works these days.

The incident in the first-half involved Jorginho. Clipped on the leg by Grealish, rolls around holding his face and sets the tone for how so many players try to maximise situations and put massive pressure on the referee.
I wasn't impressed by Jack's reaction but their chickens came home to roost and their captain picked-up a red card.

There's nothing new in this though. Chelsea had a world class exponent for several seasons; a big, strapping athlete named Drogba who would go over like a 12-year-old schoolgirl at the slightest touch.

He was perhaps a little. Watching back on the highlights now, I noticed the reaction of Thiago Silva who was just behind them. His entire body seemed to say "oh, for fuck's sake" as Azpilicueta swung his arm, and then stepped in to keep people away with a "look, just let the ref send him off, okay?" attitude. He knew straight away.

You have no choice, referees consistently show that they won't give decisions otherwise. Look at how many Man U get when it isn't a foul. I'm certainly not going to castigate a player for making sure a referee correctly sent off an opponent.

It might seem fanciful, but finishing the season by beating Spurs and Chelsea in the space of a few days...I wonder if the spring in the step it injects in the players as they have a well-earned break over the summer would also give an extra % of assurance to our better players (namely Jack) that we're on the cusp of something special.

The backline stood firm that saw us through a very tense opening twenty minutes, thought Chelsea like most of the top sides were a very good passing side, always seemed to have players free, what they did lack was a sense of being a team, very little passion. Perhaps some posters will have a second look at Marvelous, in the last two games he has really shown vast improvement and could be he has taken longer to get there. Jack is nowhere near match fit and i thought he could have come off, Skill level way above all others but his legs were gone toward the end. Two or three top aquisitions in the summer and look out.

Thought we were a bit lucky at times although they are a team in the Champions league final,  Hause was excellent - but we hung on for the win.

As stated above no real support for Watkins and was left very isolated and did not have his usual impact on the game, Traore shows some lovely skill but he does need to work more on the defensive side of the game

A good day out. with a couple of top class additions in the summer we could be challenging for the top 6 next season.

I can't ever recall seeing a team losing a match by 1 goal start wasting time towards the end and finally the ref is forced to book their keeper. Truly bizarre.
That's right, "Super" league sides. You'd better get used to having to waste time to keep your scores down when the Villa are in town.

Only watched the first half and El Goalsi’s penalty. We looked up against it most of the first half, but never looked to be getting completely battered. Defence looked pretty solid, but seemed to get in each other’s way a few times. Better than both looking to leave it I suppose. The corner was class, really well worked and expertly finished for the goal. I already knew the final score and read a description of the goal before seeing it, so wasn’t as exciting to see after that. 4 pts off Chelsea this season is brilliant. I had them to win the league this season at the start. I think the 11th place finish and the pts haul is even more impressive when you look at the sides we’ve beaten. We could have maybe expected a similar points haul, but by beating some of the ‘lesser’ teams and losing to the so-called big boys. It really has been an enjoyable season overall. Excited to see how the Villa lads do for England, summer transfers and which youngsters are bumped up from the youth to be involved next season. Great time to be a Villa fan at the minute.

I noticed that Klop singled out their last game against us as a really tough game in their run in, and that they only won it in extra time. At about 30 seconds in.

You have no choice, referees consistently show that they won't give decisions otherwise. Look at how many Man U get when it isn't a foul. I'm certainly not going to castigate a player for making sure a referee correctly sent off an opponent.

If I was manager I'd have a 'Wall of disrespect' in the changing room where all these patronising comments and put downs get pinned. Create an 'us against the world' mentality to drive us on. The only problem is it would take up too much space, and it would be a full time job for someone to keep up with it all.

A featured section would be 'Lawro's prediction' which would usually be a defeat.

I don't think Jack had an especially good game by his standards. Only to be expected though after so long out. And yes Traore was his usual self. Great goal, some nice bits of skill but no tackling back and forever losing the ball in possession. He absolutely refuses to even attempt to head the ball as well.

VAR does show a kick on the standing foot by the Wolves Defender. I think it was the fact he went down 2 seconds later when he had lost it which makes people think there wasn't contact. It was more of a Pen then most they got this season. Still don't think we would have got it if it had been for us though.

Lovely to see a set piece plan.

What was Tuchel complaining about post game? Definite pen and definite red.

The Mings handball I suspect...thought they had a case there alright (based on decisions given earlier in the season).

Our peno was soft but Jorginho didn't complain much. I wasn't too impressed by Grealish's antics to get their player sent off. Yes he got a bit of a swipe but if one of our players were sent off in those circumstances there would be a meltdown on here. Don't think it will do Grealish many favours with refs next season either.

Tuchel is a bit strange. The bizarre loyalty to the frankly hopeless Werner and not giving Tammy a kick for one. I fail to see the logic of his recent swapping of James and Azpilicueta either.

Tuchel came across as very tutonic, through gritted teeth. It was like he was talking about the failed defence of the Reichstag in 1945 rather than a game of football. Everything went against him, his team failed him etc.

If he'd had Klopp's teeth he may have pulled it off!
Title: Re: Ice Cream Licking Aston Villa 2-1 Supposed ESL team Chelsea
Post by: Drummond on May 24, 2021, 12:07:02 PM
Grealish was hit in the face, and he made sure it was seen, if not by the ref, then by VAR. He made them have to look at it. It was their player's stupidity in doing what he did that was the issue.

Mings didn't handball it, the ball hit his arm that was by his side.

Our pen was exactly that, Jorghino made contact twice with Traore. He didn't protest much either, definitely a penalty and whilst you'd be disappointed to have it given against you, you'd have to accept it.

As for the ice-cream delay, I'm over the moon that they felt they had to complain and get the start of the match delayed, football pettiness at it's finest.

Overall has been a very good season, only disappointment is that we didn't finish in the top half, but at least we came top of the bottom half by some distance, 10 points. Feeling very positive about next season and I'm normally Mr Negative. Of course the big question is can we keep Jack, if he has a good Euros, it maybe be hard, but trying to stay positive, am fairly confident, we can.

Good to see Nakamba finish the season well, if he continues to improve next season, could be a big asset for his. A word for AEG, I think he's now scored 6 pens for us and no misses, good to see we may now have a decent penalty taker.

For all of my life from the moment I got teeth I always bit my nails, so bad that they would bleed.  My old pair tried everything to stop me including that yellow stuff you mention, that and all the other lotions and potions, not a bother, I happily munched my way through them all so I was left to get on with it.  Then, sometime in the last ten years or less I just stopped.  I have tried ever since to understand why and how but I stopped.  I'm still wary though of falling off the wagon especially if I get a ragged nail which funnily enough happened this morning.  I have to deal with it immediately otherwise I believe the gates of hell would open up again.  Notwithstanding it's a really filthy habit.

Martinez 9
Some good saves.
Emi distribution by kicking leaves a lot to be desired at times but unbelievable today brilliant Goalkeeping.

Konsa 8
Capable at right back but culpable for conceding goal and opportunities their left side. A solid and mainly assured player. Great season and good effort this match marked down for goal conceding

Targett 8.5
Thought made some great challenges. Excellent reading of game if not beaten a couple of timed

Hause 8
Solid with his head and clearing the ball time and again.

Mings 9
Unbelievable leading again from the back  Absolute heroe performance in way he showed class. Very impressed. Southgate called up by England . Could well start vs Croatia

Nakamba 8.5
brilliant covering in the main

McGinn 8.5
Would again be 9 out of 10 if it wasn't for the senseless yellow card. Way he won the ball of Kovacs and led the press in midfield was a joy.

El Ghazi 8.5
Worked it well just gets more and more settled as a dangerous attacking premier league player. One of the best penalty takers in Europe. .5 marked up for being our winning hero

Traore 8.5
(Would be 9 if he passed more )
Made up for fustrating Spurs performance with the desired impact. A goal and could have been more and a lovely but meg to get the penalty.  I observe he competes somewhat or maybe just raises his game when Jack in team and wants to display his abilities to all.

Grealish 8
(Would be an 8.5  to 9 if scored or assisted and didn't fade as well as all the fouling initially).
Exceptional player and talent has an imminent and deserved  call up to england squad. Was rather fired up like McGinn and was needless fouling giving away free kicks but also faded through fatigued. Perhaps could have passed at times but always always make side more dangerous
Class player and no coincidence we win these last 2 matches with Jack in the team. He brought the team forward gives an extra edge.

Watkins 9
Outstanding. Deserves to be in England national team men's squad for Euros. Of the 3 players nothing heard if he like Mings and Grealish are in yet. Here's to a great performance and wonderful season.

Yesterday showed the mental side of football to me.

Even though we came under siege first 20 and last 20 minutes generally we remained calm and believed we wouldn't concede (first half) or not win the game.

Compare it to similar spells when we play Man. United and half the players on the pitch are expecting things to go wrong either through a terrible error or bad penalty decision and it usually happens.

Chelsea now only won by more than a goal at VP twice in last 22 years which is some going considering some of the teams they've had in that period.

We just believe more we can get results off likes of Chelsea and Liverpool compared to Man. United I think.

Yeah, about 50 years for that pun.

I always look in on other clubs forums to see how they viewed the game so I looked at Chelsea's TheShed. A more obnoxious and classless bunch would be difficult to find. Grealish got a lot of vile abuse but a special mention for the guy who said it was a "pity" their player didn't take out his eye when he got sent off for hitting Jack. They're oblivious to the absolute fact that some of the biggest cheats that have ever played in the Premier league played for them. I'd like to wish a plague of disease carrying fleas on all their houses.

So Touchy got hacked off because there was a delay getting into the dressing room, because losing that vital 15 minutes scuppered his           pre-match preparations and team talk.

Some thoughts:

Does that imply that every second between Chelsea arriving at Villa Park and kick-off was completely accounted for, what if a player needs an unscheduled slash or dump - does that throw everything out of kilter?

If time is that tight, then you'd  expect someone from a nation that's renowned for efficiency and planning to allow a bit of time - just in case.

Looking forward to the coach next season to be chaperoned through the streets of Aston by a convoy of cars travelling at a suitably respectful pace. Perhaps we could arrange for a trainee hearse driver, or even a trainee horse drawn horse driver to be out and about.

Where i live in Sussex its full of them.  The day we played away at Everton i met up with my mate for a beer in the town Square. He had his Everton top on. A Chelsea fan walked past, noticed and started talking to him . Upon hearing I was a Villa fan he.smirked and in that arrogant patronising tone they have claimed it would be an easy three pts for Everton. We obviously   beat Everton that night and Chelsea yesterday. Oh to have seen him again since....
I remember Chelsea fans being arseholes the day after a game at Stamford Bridge under Lambert where there were all sorts of dubious decisions go their way. They'd won the game but there was no humility the way they were dishing out stick. When I moved down here you rarely saw Chelsea fans but obviously since the late 90s there's millions of the buggers now and I find them worse than Man Utd fans.

As an aside Max Stokes has done a new video from yesterday’s game.  I really like Max’s videos well worth a watch.  He seems over the (Max) moon to be back.

My three abiding memories of their fans are:
- them singing "no surrender" in an Irish pub before the 2000 FA Cup final
- them singing anti-semitic songs on the tube after the same game
- *the* most vile, racist language I've ever heard directed towards the ticket office lady at Aston station in the early 90s.

The last point - they went *way* past using the N word. Way past it. It was disgusting.

Anyway, maybe that's coloured my view of them and maybe there are some nice ones, but in my mind there's a vocal proportion of Chelsea fans who are utter scum. I struggle to think of a single club I dislike more than them.

My abiding memory of them is when I was with my son in The Volunteer pub ahead of the cup final.  A group of knob head Chelsea fans started doing the piss take "my name is Marlene" idiots version of what they think is a Birmingham accent.  One of them suggested to my son that the cup final was his first football game.  Damon coolly replied that his football following went back to the days before Russian mafia money and Chelsea's best player was John Bumstead.  Damon then proceeded to name all eleven players in the Bumstead team.  They left him alone after that.  Pity we lost the game.

One of my best mates at Uni was a big Chelsea fan in that era so I could probably name a lot of that terrible team. Gareth Hall. Peter Rhodes-Brown. Vinnie Jones.

Same as Delano’s Mullet said there’s plenty down here is Sussex with massive entitlement issues and no knowledge prior to their lottery win. When I lived in south west London I was getting my hair cut on cup final day 2000 with my villa top on and a white van mounted the curb to try and run me over. Lovely stuff.

My son had a head start on the thickos.  John Bumstead was a Rotherhithe born boy and a local hero in Bermondsey.  My son at the time was editor of the Bermondsey News (latterly the Southwark News).

I didn't pay the red card much mind at the time, seemed an obvious call. Surprised it was being spoken about and very surprised to see it rescinded.

100%, are we now grading the severity of the strike to the face?

I don’t recall Ollie Watkins red card (or second yellow) being rescinded after it showed he didn’t dive for that penalty.

Disgraceful it has been overturned ,then again it is one of the greedy 6  .If Leicester had took their place in the top four they would have tried to get the game replayed due to Icecream gate

You can't appeal a yellow - unfortunately - even if it leads to a red.  If we'd been able to, it would definitely have been overturned.

The overturning of Sunday's red is another black mark against VAR for me.  Either it's a hand to the face and it's a red car, or it's not.  The ref thought it was, and VAR didn't think he'd made a mistake.  Probably just evidence of nothing more than VAR not having the balls to overrule the on-field official.  If it was questionable they should have sent him to the monitor.

I thought it was a harsh red, BUT, it WAS a hand in the face, which is a big no-no, much like head-to-head contact - you do it, you're off, whether it's a feather touch or a nose-breaker.

I do wonder if Jack making the most of it affected the appeal process?

Great win after we'd been under the cosh for about twenty-five minutes.

TMWWOW was on co-commentary again, and said early on that Marv just needed to trust his back-line and push up a bit to stop us being outnumbered in midfield. He was right.

Great to see Chuk on again -a big statement of confidence from the manager. Wonder if this comes in handy as a bargaining chip when it comes to getting CC to sign his next contract?

Ridiculous decision to rescind the red card. I'd love to know what the mitigating circumstances were for a hand in JG's face. Good to see Chelsea being punished for being in the ESL Slimy Six by being given a free pass.
