Title: Andy Lochhead 80 today
Post by: nigel on March 09, 2021, 11:07:01 AM
So many memories I’ll never forget.
A true Villa legend.

I will always remember his return when he was at Oldham. If ever there was a lump in my throat moment. The whole ground were singing his song. I think I remember him saying he had tears in his eyes.
We beat them 5-0, but I guess if he’d scored the crowd would still have cheered.

A true hard man, a game against Walsall stands out, I knew their centre back very well and in a challenge Andy put Stan Bennett on his arse, as he got up he staggered around for a few minutes, Stan wasn't soft, Andy was that hard.

Equaliser v Man U in the League Cup semi final at the Holte End.
Towering over Ian Ure and thumping a header past Alex Stepney into the top corner

Yes; I was there and it really introduced me to magic of an explosive atmosphere.
He was an icon of our renaissance.

Andy was such a hard and brave centre forward and scorer  of some of the goals that have shaped Villa's history . One of my favorites though was in the 'night of the black cat' game v Shrewsbury. A massive kick from Jimmy Cumbes in the Witton End goal, the ball lands midway in the opposition half with Lochhead hurtling towards it with the centre-half. There was only going to be one winner and Andy hits it straight in from the edge of the area. Unique song too "We've got baldy cock-eyed Andy in the air, in the air ........" Happy birthday big man!

Andy, Andy Lochhead Andy Lochhead in the air
One of early heroes, as others have said as hard as nails, huge part of the 1972 third division championship season, the goal against Bournemouth stands out for me, the roof nearly came off the Holte End
Happy 80th birthday Andy

I accidently met him as a boy on a Cambridge Rec as we were having a kick about and he and a couple of others were taking a fitness tests for (Oldham I think)? as they were playing Cambridge that afternoon and he kicked a ball right of to us and I said I know who you are....he said who am I then ?...I said Andy Lochhead my Dad thought you were the best when you were at the Villa.
He then asked if I supported the Villa...oh yes I said, and he said stay with them as they are the greatest of all clubs as he ran back to join the other couple of players.

I Posted this on the memory thread
Sorry to Repeat but. happy Birthday Andy
Does anyone have an address to send him greetings on ?
two other memories, him protecting Brian Little from 3rd Division bruisers
Then him returning to VP as manager for Oldham in a league cup game, the Holte roaring out, Andy, Andy Lochhead , Andy Lochhead in the air.
All very emotional, we won 2-0 and I think he got sacked not long after
