Title: Brighton vs Aston Villa pre-match thread - Saturday, Feb 13th - 8pm
Post by: Toronto Villa on February 09, 2021, 04:51:45 PM
Brighton beat us in game at Villa Park that we weren't particularly good in and one that also ended very controversially. We are going to a place where the home team doesn't win a lot (fact not a jinx statement). So with I want to see us take the game to them as much play on the break. We have more than enough ability to win this game if we play our best.

I'll go 2-0 to us - Watkins and Jack

We will have had our rest both mentally and physically. This is a very good marker as to where we are. We should be going down there for the win and nothing else, that's not to take the opposition lightly of course, but we have the quality to pick up points in games such as this. However, the element of surprise is why we love the game so much. Intriguing.

We are overdue a draw but I want to be confident, hopefully in line with the management and players.

1-3

We lost the home game with brighton because we only had 1 training session after the international break. They had two weeks to prepare for the match. This time we have a week to prepare, they are in the cup mid week so they will only have two days to prepare for us. Villa to win.

Last up Saturday evening is a bit of a pain. Brighton won't just sit back and pack the box so it should be a pretty open game. Barkley should be dropped anyway and perhaps McGinn. Might be the ideal game to bring Sanson in for. Lots of selection options anyway across the midfield.

Noticed that and hopefully the additional rest will give us an edge. Similarly with Leicester we'll have another week's rest and they'll be playing their 5th game in 2 weeks.

I like Brighton, and rate Potter, but we should be taking 3 points a season from them at least, and given that they took the other half from us at our place that leaves us no alternative if we want to be European challengers.

I dont see that at all. If anything, they're far too nice. They try to play football on the floor, and command plenty of possession. The opposite to fcuking Burnley.

Maupay is the one nasty outlier. Wouldn't surprise me if he bullies his poor, placid manager Mr Potter into starting him every game.

With a week off and hopefully the Covid scare fully behind us, I would begin with the usual starting eleven. Barkley included. Nobody has an excuse now for an under par performance and Brighton certainly command our respect. They are a good footballing side but can be a bit shit upfront.

We owe them one. 0-2 to the Villa.  :)

Don’t think we should take this too lightly. Since they lost to Leicester away in mid December, they’ve won 4 drawn 6 and lost only 2 in the league, and 3 of the wins came against Spurs at home and Liverpool and Leeds away. They might be nearer the bottom than top, but they have no chance of going down and are completely in form.
Considering west ham have turned us over twice, we’ve taken one point off Burnley and already lost to this lot, it seems the sort of game we could we’ll lose.
They’ve been tight defensively lately, so an early goal for us potentially essential. 2-1 villa (Watkins, Grealish)

BHA is a really well-drilled team, difficult to beat. Perhaps we can tough out a sourhampton-esque 1-0 victory but I feel it's likely to be 1-1 draw.

Brighton are one of those sides that seems to play better, and put in better performances, than their results show.  Which is a bit of a worry.  If you're into stats, their league position on expected goals (which is really just a measure of the quality of the chances they create and concede) is 7th - we are 6th.   I think this just means either their finishing has been terrible, or the finishing of the opposition has been particularly good against them.

Either way, we should not be taking this game lightly.  I'd settle for another nervy 1-0!

This season their home record is

P 11 W 1 D 6 L 4 GF 11 GA 15 GD -4 Pts 9

Unfortunately for us their one win was in their last home game, against Spurs, so that might be out the window now.

Interestingly, we're 7th in both the home and away tables with 16 and 19 points respectively. Both our postponed games are home games.

It's funny though as they're not that kind of team, if you know what I mean, they move the ball around well. But they do seem to score their goal from set pieces rather than open play.

I don't think our midfield duo havent played particularly well with the ball for the past few games, Mings has had to go long a lot more than planned. Good job Watkins has been in such good form. I'd expect Nakamba to keep his place, Smith is usually big on guys keeping their spot. He was far from impressed with Luiz for a few games particularly v West Ham. Nakamba in fairness to him did bring a bit more positional discipline to our midfield v Arsenal.

But if we continue to go long v Brighton, Watkins will struggle against their 3 x CBs who can all play s bit. Brighton will press from the front so that's going to pose a problem for McGinn (out of position at RCM) and Nakamba who doesn't have the technical ability to play on the half turn. Might be one to drop jack into 10 to get us playing a bit more through the lines.

Key to beating a 5 is retaining possession and stretching their centre halves thinly. I expect Dougie will come back and for him and McGinn to be more disciplined positionally off the ball.

With no Lamperty and March, they're weak at wing back. Webster is likely out too, so Byrne will play, who I suspect Ollie will look to plot up against.

Jack and Traore as wide as possible, full backs really pushing on, with Barkley being quicker to transition wide. We have the measure of them, just avoid the daft line we held on occasions at Villa Park.

Mings
Konsa

Dougie

Barkley

Intensity, look after the ball, should win.

The jury is still out on Barkley. I feel he's still fighting his own demons and is still not fully up to speed. The good thing is, as was recently demonstrated with Traore, once players realise we attack and defend as a team, Barkley should start adapting to our style. He's had a tough intro with a great start, injury and fitness. Hindsight is wonderful but it's easy to see why he's struggled with so many games over such a short period of time.

Right now I'd value him at half of what Chelsea are rumoured to say they want. Berkley has a lot to prove but he also has the benefit of having time on his side. I just pray he doesn't leave until the last few games of the season and we get carried away and end up buying a dud.

By his attitude when he gets subbed, he clearly wants to play. Never fully fit and injury prone may be the problem. Given his history, I doubt that Chelsea can ask for an astronomical fee.

For me, pre-injury I thought he looked great. Things weren't always clicking, but when they did you could see he was one hell of a player.

After the injury, to me he looks like he's not really got back up to full fitness, and that along with him having a less engaged playing style than the rest of the team has made him look a bit of a passenger.

I'm fairly hopeful that he'll get back to being himself over the second half of the season. It wouldn't surprise me if he joined permanently come the end of the season, but not for the £40m figure being bandied about. That seems quite high to me for a player that, if we don't take him, will - at best - be sitting on their bench.

Feels like another one we could get a win in.  Be interesting to see how a fitter Barkley performs - he's got a point to prove too.

I feel like we owe these for everything that happened at VP earlier this season.

Tough one, but we’ll win this.

Including today, 5 of the next 6 matches are against teams from the bottom half, so gotta a good opportunity to push for that European place. Brighton are on a good run at the moment, unbeaten in 5 in the league, which includes winning at Anfield. We'll have to watch out for Lewis Dunk at set pieces and Maupay at the other end. Going for Villa win by the odd goal.

This is the Villa though, so patchy results from those games then we’ll clean up in the big games and end up a point off 4th place thinking ‘if only .....”.

I’d like to see Douglas back. Hopefully a game off did him some good, but we need to control the midfield today.

Oh a win would rock... 2 places jumped and 2 places more possible with GiH... 4-1 lads let's tear them a fresh rectum.

With Spurz being beaten, I was going to show how healthy the table will look if we win tonight. Decided it's not a good idea.
