Not always pretty but we got over the line. Well done Ollie and Emi for seeing us through
-
Get in. Thought Emi, Ollie and Mings were great.
Is that Jack suspended?
-
Great result.
-
Mings was brilliant today
-
Deserved. Good second half, with some big performances from Mings, Cash and Watkins. Needed to win that and we did, against a good side too.
-
Another 1-0 win...boring boring Villa! 😂
-
Is that Jack suspended?
Don't think so.
-
Overall a good professional win. First half was a bit disappointing but as Arsenal pressed forward we had lots of good chances second half. Southampton felt like we nicked it, but that was deserved today. Well done boys.
-
That'll do.
-
Ground it out. I know Mings gets some stick but he was imperious today. What a performance!
-
Watkins MOTM... He scores and defends.
That bit of play he did around 54 minutes was exceptional.
-
Is that Jack suspended?
Don't think so.
You're right Lee, that marker passed at the half way of the season stage.
-
Fuck me that second half was stressful, I thought we defended brilliantly but they did a similar number on us as West Ham did in restricting our attacking play second.
Excellent result.
-
Backs to the wall but I'll take it!
Think we had about 8 shots on target in the end.
-
Much more comfortable than the commentators would have it. Great team performance.
-
Watkins MOTM... He scores and defends.
That bit of play he did around 54 minutes was exceptional.
Same for me, he was fucking awesome. Great win that is.
-
Ground it out. I know Mings gets some stick but he was imperious today. What a performance!
When he's like that he's brilliant. It's only ever been the brain farts and stupid mistakes that have been the problem. Cut those out and there's nobody better.
-
]Superb defensively in the second half, but we needed to be. Midfield was by-passed far too much for me. Much to ponder for Smith and Co. Ramsey helped to stem the tide to be fair. Did well when he came on
-
Great to do the double on one of "sky's six" brilliant effort
-
Better subs today. Helped us over the line. Not sure what Barkley's beef is but he's not doing enough for me
-
Good result.
Watkins was excellent.
The midfield is still not right and if Barkley wants to avoid having a tantrum when being subbed he might try running around a bit more for the preceding 80 minutes.
-
Fantastic 3 points against an improving Arsenal team, the back four were exceptional again today.
-
Conceded far too much territory and ball to Arsenal. Thought Mings, Cash and Watkins had great games. Barkley needs to realise that he can't stroll around in this team, look at the shift Watkins put in.
-
Fuck me that second half was stressful, I thought we defended brilliantly but they did a similar number on us as West Ham did in restricting our attacking play second.
Excellent result.
Seemed to me that we had 3 or 4 really good chances second half at least.
-
Was I watching a different game to the commentators "hanging on at the end" In every stage of the game we had the better chances in including the last 15 minutes?
-
I think Barkley knows he isnt playing well, real lack if energy in his game.
-
A great win with a massive improvement on Wednesday night which is just what we needed.
-
Relatively comfortable in the end. Would have liked a second to calm the nerves.
Strange season - one point from four games against West Ham and Burnley; the double over Arsenal.
-
Amayzin! Some downers at times this season but on the whole a great season so far. Eleven wins is one better at this stage that in both 92-93 and 1995-96.
-
That was nerve shredding.
They dominated possession for large parts of the game but we created by far the better chances.
Some great battling performances today, and the back 5 were magnificent, to a man.
-
Is that Jack suspended?
Don't think so.
You're right Lee, that marker passed at the half way of the season stage.
Brill cheers chaps.
-
Fabulous result and I have to say I much prefer BT's coverage to Sky.
-
Great result. When we can play like we did today and Southampton and still come away with the win, it’s very encouraging. We’d all like us to play better but it doesn’t always work like that.
Whole defence were brilliant.
Not quite sure what Arteta was moaning at the officials at the end for?
-
Weekend has just got better ;D
-
Watkins MOTM... He scores and defends.
That bit of play he did around 54 minutes was exceptional.
Same for me, he was fucking awesome. Great win that is.
I spotted that too. Immence defending from a centre forward (I wonder which stationary player he passed on the way to helping out Targett)
Great result. Our defence was brilliant but Tyrone was my pick of the bunch. Jack improved 2nd half (that free kick at the end should have been awarded to Jack not against him...weak refs!)
Brilliant work Villa!!
-
it's a sign of progress that we can scrap out wins after a previous disappointing performance.
-
That was nerve shredding.
They dominated possession for large parts of the game but we created by far the better chances.
Some great battling performances today, and the back 5 were magnificent, to a man.
I'm bored with saying how great Targett is, so Cash's turn today. He must be the fittest player we have, as he never gives the player on the left for opposition a second's peace. No small amount of skill either. Brilliant purchase.
-
Jack won’t be suspended as the yellow cards get re-set once clubs have played their 19th match.
Put ourselves under a lot of pressure but, ultimately, a great result from an outstanding defensive display. Bring on the Spuds!!
-
The ground Ollie covers is immense.
-
Done Arsenal home and away. No goals conceded. Now, that is superb.
I know we're not getting ahead of ourselves but with Arsenal and Tottenham not at their usual level we have a great chance of Europe this season.
I know, I know... Whisper it softly...
-
Great result against a quality team, Mings and Ollie outstanding, well done Villa.
UP THE VILLA
-
The ground Ollie covers is immense.
Yes, Villa Park is quite spectacular.
-
Love a clean sheet as much as a bunch of goals
-
That's more like it! 35 points now, same as we got last season.
Does that mean we'll stay up now?
-
That's more like it! 35 points now, same as we got last season.
Does that mean we'll stay up now?
we could always do an Aston Villa of old and mess it up.
-
Great result. Ollie Watkins was brilliant again. Very happy with that. Hopefully be able to build on that win and get back on the train for a top 6 finish.
-
Ming deserves the praise considering some stick he gets.
Ollie was outstanding a great example for young strikers.
-
I’m liking Ramsey’s cameos too.
-
Defence and Ollie superb today
Barkley needs to stop the theatrics after being subbed. Undermines the manager if done too often. Easy solution, play better
-
Fuck me that second half was stressful, I thought we defended brilliantly but they did a similar number on us as West Ham did in restricting our attacking play second.
Excellent result.
Agreed. We really needed those 3 points, they certainly keep our season interesting. Considering how many games we've played over a short period it's little surprise the quality was missing. Mings and Martinez deserve special praise today. Excellent effort and concentration throughout.
-
Last season we lose that game, I don't have a single doubt about that. It reminded me of the 1-2 against Chelsea at home.
Mings best game since we were promoted for me.
-
Ollie, best since Dwight
-
Not quite sure what Arteta was moaning at the officials at the end for?
He said to the official we are Arsenal didn't you realise that you should have given us a goal and the Ref said "hang on yes that's 1-0, 0-3 and 1-0 last 3 for you against Villa so yes that's the only way you will score"
-
Some top draw shithousery from us today as well, fouls to break up play, diving when under pressure in our own full back positions and some olympic standard timewasting when taking set pieces.
-
I’m liking Ramsey’s cameos too.
That little bit of skill towards the end was wonderful.
-
Second best for periods of the game, but battled to get a good win. Thought Martinez looked back to his assured best and the back four defended really well. Ollie Watkins really scrapped it out up front for us and was a bit unlucky to not add another goal.
Thought Jack looked a bit tired for the first time this season, but we’ve got a week until the next game now so hopefully can get some rest after a tough couple of weeks.
-
Disagree, Jack was immense
-
Couldn't watch the game, don't know how we played... but YAAAAAAAASSSS.
FUCK OFF ARSENAL.
-
The incident with Konsa and Sako first half, I didnt think it was even a foul.
-
There build up play was better but we had the only worthwhile chances.
-
Mings minus the errors is a rock - deservedly MoM closely followed by Cash.
We gifted too much possession second half probably through tiredness but we ground that one out by restricting them to very few clear chances.
-
Great to be the first game of the weekend and to get the win.
Can watch the other games with utter calm and serenity.
-
These bits on BT with Peter Walton are eye-bleedingly dreadful.
-
Nice to see how happy Mings was at the end
-
It's funny that we think Arsenal were all over us and spent the second half watching from behind the sofa but just had an exchange with a Gooner friend who said Villa played very well and they were crap and never going to score.
-
There build up play was better but we had the only worthwhile chances.
Pass, pass, pass, bore.
-
The incident with Konsa and Sako first half, I didnt think it was even a foul.
Or the one with Marvelous. Sako slipped and almost fell into him.
-
So Arteta moaning about Konsa not getting a red when, if you slow it down Saka made contact with Konsa first!
Didn’t see the penalty shout during the match. Martinez shouldn’t have been pulling his shirt....oh well 😁
-
The incident with Konsa and Sako first half, I didn't think it was even a foul.
neither do I - they just tangled legs. Neither player was to blame.
-
These bits on BT with Peter Walton are eye-bleedingly dreadful.
He’s the perfect example of ‘making it up as he goes along.’
-
Last season we lose that game, I don't have a single doubt about that. It reminded me of the 1-2 against Chelsea at home.
Mings best game since we were promoted for me.
I thought it panned out exactly like last season at home to Arsenal (albeit not half as nerve shredding as that game was!) We scored an early goal and sat back and chose our attacks on the break and in the end won reasonably comfortably as only hard Martinez save I can recall was the deflected Pepe shot.
-
I'm being lazy here but any Statto's on here care to let us know the last time we did the double over Arsenal? Pleeeeeease. Well done Villa.
-
These bits on BT with Peter Walton are eye-bleedingly dreadful.
He's just a dull, beige, yes man. I've never heard him say anything of even mild interest.
-
This is how far we've come - we are slightly nonplussed after just doing the double over Arsenal, because the style of performance was below this season's standards.
That puts us on last season's tally now, doesn't it?
-
Mings was brilliant today
His best game for us in the top division, couldn't fault him. Our back 5 were great with Martinez back to his very best too.
Midfield were very average and thoroughly second best to Arsenal. Nakamba tried hard but isn't good enough for this level, retaining possession against a high press with him in the team is very difficult. McGinn again tried hard but couldn't get into the game at all. Barks, 10 mins aside, was a joke again and embarrassing reaction to being subbed. Traore assist aside was worse. Watkins brilliant and Jack running on empty average enough. Credit to the two lads who came on, gave us much needed graft and energy. Trez in particular was great defensively.
Martinez 8, Cash 7, Konsa 8, Mings 9, Targett 7, Nakamba 5, McGinn 5, Traore 4, Barks 4, Jack 6, Watkins 8. Trez 7, Ramsey 6
-
Jack won’t be suspended as the yellow cards get re-set once clubs have played their 19th match.
I don't think they get reset - it's just that the ban for five is removed.
If he gets to ten, he still gets a ban.
-
Is that Jack suspended?
Don't think so.
You're right Lee, that marker passed at the half way of the season stage.
Brill cheers chaps.
However if he picks up 4 more bookings he misses two matches.
-
I’m liking Ramsey’s cameos too.
That little bit of skill towards the end was wonderful.
It was but what followed clearly wasn’t to Trezeguet’s liking. He went shouty crackers. I like Trez.
-
Excellent result.
I hate watching at home, makes me nervous, but as much as we conceded territory at times, they never once looked like scoring and created nothing, whereas we should have won by 2 or 3 given Watkins quality chances.
Negatives
Barkely on the ball is excellent, Barkley off it, is anonymous at the moment. When Ramsey came on, our press totally smothered them.
Lack of killer instinct. We ought to have buried them with the chances we had. They weren't half chances, but really good ones.
Losing the midfield; felt for 20 minutes we lost the midfield and that was a combination of Barkely being poor off the ball and Nakamba tiring, being stunted somewhat by the yellow.
Arsenal are very pretty and have a lot of creative players who are very good at creating nothing at all, but against a better side, we need to be wiser. We can get away with it against midtable outfits, perhaps not the higher echelons.
Positives
Mings, Konsa, Targett and Cash, superb.
Options. Ramsey has some quality and presence which is good to see and Nakamba did well too, although we miss Dougie and his quality on the ball.
Watkins is the new Vardy. Absolute pest of a centre forward. Part Duracell battery, part energy drink. What a player.
A lot more comfortable than it feels in the eye of the maelstrom. An Albion mate said he thought we were comfortable with them all game. Have to agree, they could be playing now and Martinez still wouldn't have made a save.
-
There build up play was better but we had the only worthwhile chances.
......all fart and no....
-
Thought Traore was decent enough, held his position to stretch them wide and retained the ball well enough, his tracking back was even improved until the few minutes before he got dragged.
-
Apologies to TheEdge for me being a knob in the match thread.
-
I’m liking Ramsey’s cameos too.
That little bit of skill towards the end was wonderful.
It was but what followed clearly wasn’t to Trezeguet’s liking. He went shouty crackers. I like Trez.
This made me laugh
-
Mings MOTM for me. Best game in a while. Really led the team today.
-
I'm being lazy here but any Statto's on here care to let us know the last time we did the double over Arsenal? Pleeeeeease. Well done Villa.
1992/3 season. Saunders pen at home in a 1-0 win, Daley goal away, also 1-0.
-
Brilliant win...not easy on the ticker, but every player put a shift in. Really chuffed with that.
-
There build up play was better but we had the only worthwhile chances.
Pass, pass, pass, bore.
Another Wenger 2005 onward mk2. They have too many of the same players, as good as they are, Pepe (not so good 75m😂) Smith Rowe and Sakha who I do rate highly. No real physical steel and sometimes you need route 1
-
It's funny that we think Arsenal were all over us and spent the second half watching from behind the sofa but just had an exchange with a Gooner friend who said Villa played very well and they were crap and never going to score.
Just watched 3 minutes highlights and they made it look comfortable. So many good chances for us. It’s not easy watching the full match though when you are conceding possession, makes it feel nervy.
-
Great win and another superb defensive performance. Good to see Watkins racking up the goals of course, but his overall game leading the line was immense - we don’t win today without that contribution.
-
We played it more like an away game.
Defence was superb, and thought McGinn played pretty well. Nakamba has definitely improved on last season; not a car crash waiting to happen but I was worried he might add to his early yellow card (particularly the way Arteta was appealing every single foul).
I like Ramsey - I think he's going to become a fixture in this team, soon.
In the end, Ryan had more to do than Emi, which shows we still had a threat and probably should have added to the only goal.
I was really nervous during the game, for some reason; glad it is done and the squad has a little time to collect itself before the next game.
-
Agains West Ham we poor all round and got what we deserved.
But today, although we were a bit fortunate for the goal with the deflection they all stepped up a notch compared to Wednesday.
Not as fluid up front as we need to be - seem a little slower on the break - Covid/fatigue?
Although they had more possession, Ollie, Jack, McGinn,Cash all had good efforts. Really excellent defensive shift by the back 4, great blocks and interception. So on balance we deserved the win, despite shithouse diving and appealing from Arteta's Arseholes.
At least now we're off the 2 games a week treadmill. More recovery and coaching time.
As already stated, we've now equalled last seasons points haul. Happy days.
Onwards and upwards
-
Felt a bit nerve wracking but if I watched that back again later, think it’ll be clear they had a lot of the ball but didn’t create a great deal.
Compared to earlier in the season there is no doubt we’re not playing with the same fluidity, part of that may be about opponents adjusting their own tactics to try and nullify, in particular Grealish. But I also think Barclay being off form adds to that.
I thought we played the ball long too many times, especially in first half and again that is partly related to some players being more nullified or not on as good form as they were. However, despite not playing brilliantly in an attacking sense, we just won 3 out of 5. It’s brilliant this team can grind out results. The defence, all of them were fantastic. McGinn battled in the middle. Nakamba did ok but faded and should of been taken off around 75 for me. Ollie last work ethic is great and must be a nightmare for defenders.
In terms of Barclay having a strop, once is ok, but that’s a couple of times now. He’s a very good player out of form, although I think he did better 2nd half. He just needs to try and play himself into form, nothing else for it.
-
Fabulous result and I have to say I much prefer BT's coverage to Sky.
I agree but did you see Rio trying to make the case for a penalty? I know he's there to stimulate debate but come on that was embarrassing.
-
The Spanish Pulis can fuck off the straw clutching twat. Think about your own tactics that created fuck all in 90 minutes, think about you taking your best player and shunting them to full back so you could add your 8th number 10 into the mix...and still create fuck all.
Not a foul by Konsa, Saka makes first contact. Its never a penalty, so go fuck yourself you bitter little twat.

Good solid defensive performance. Don't think we played as well as we can but delighted with the win. We always win on Saturdays so good job there's no midweek games for a while.
-

Not seen the interview. I take it Arteta has been clutching at straws?

Thanks Martin, appreciate it.
-
A really good win. We could and probably should have got a couple more but I thought it was fairly comfortable overall. Watkins was my motm match as well but I thought Trez really put a shift in when he came on.
-
Would love to see the free flowing football but we got the win. Barkley was lucky not to be subbbed before, the defence was superb and so was SJM and Ollie was tireless. Thought Traore was unlucky to be subbed.
Nakamb ran out of gas and was still on the pitch at the end although he disappeared at half time.
I thought that Konsa did nothing wrong, was not even a foul.
-
Some top draw shithousery from us today as well, fouls to break up play, diving when under pressure in our own full back positions and some olympic standard timewasting when taking set pieces.
Totally admirable qualities.

I agree. It looked to be like a straight forward "coming together" of feet/ankles with no intent

That win at Highbury was the last away victory of the season before the wheels came off and Man Utd ended up winning the inaugural Premiership by a distance.

Maybe he should watch the highlights that will show him that his team created nothing. The only chance from free kick was nicely dealt with by the man he decided was surplus to his requirement.

All the top teams do it.

They were really mugged by Chelsea for Willian. Looks a different player at Arsenal, one planning his retirement... Auba maybe the same, handed me a new contract last summer, did he even get a kick when he came on?
They are improving though. A footballer appears to be emerging in Pepe
-

Agree on Jack. He has put 110% into every game this season and is showing signs of a burnout. It's probably a good time to give him a rest as we're definitely not going down and top 4 is a bit too soon. We could afford to give him a rest and bring him back in with all guns blazing for the last quarter of the season where he can cement his England place and player of the season trophy.

That made me laugh,

Pepe was good for them but I thought Matty Cash was excellent, as were the rest of the defenders and the keeper. Our midfield went missing a bit at times but it was a cracking result, resolute and we have moved forward so much since last season. Delighted with the result as it gives us a bit of space between us and the teams below us. Mings and Watkins can scrap it out for MOTM, both excellent today.
-
There build up play was better but we had the only worthwhile chances.
Pass, pass, pass, bore.

It's not so much 'route 1', although use of an early long pass is a very useful arrow in our quiver, it's that they don't try to take opponents out of the game with the ball. Saka was the only one trying to run at us. We're too well organised* to simply pass through. Compare to us, with Traore, Grealish, Watkins, Barkley, Ramsey, even our fullbacks, all constantly looking to beat players while carrying the ball.
*mostly.
-
I don't know about the players but I'm glad of the midweek break, the stress is killing me and it's doing up the wilton with all the pacing up and down.
-
I think the defending was outstanding today, as good as I can remember for many a season. Mings just edges it for me but Cash was brilliant. Not just the back four though, everyone put a shift in to keep us ahead. We’d have lost that 1-3 last season but not now.
-
Re the Arteta "penalty" claim, I cant think of reason at all why Martinez would be pulling Lacazettes shirt unless he was already being fouled. BT were very selective with the video stills which even then didn't look all that. If Rio thinks that a pen he's a prick who needs another drug test!
-
Martinez 8
Unbelievable leap for the save for xhaka free kick. Really good action replay of it from goal cam on bt sport had to applaud the slow motion save .Another clean sheet . Solid steady and was so pleased for him back to improving his standards after midweek errors.
Made the goal with wonderful distribution to Traore
Also a great save with feet when shot deflected off Konsa,
Cash 7.5
Solid and disciplined up against Arsenal threat on left side the whole. Few too many pass backs again however he was excellent in the defending and made tackles and good moves forward. Dealt well with Pepe , Sakha, Willian. Well played.
Konsa 6.5
Would be solid 7 but loose with some poor positioning and tackling and was lucky maybe another ref would have had either a straight red or when he made a couple more fouls a second yellow as was booked initially for foul on Saka. Solid enough against poor Arnseal strikers. Did what was required and recovered from head injury well and stayed defensively sound.
Mings 8.5
Absolute beast and for me again best of the central pair . Wonderful positioning, interception and blocking Composed and solid on ball . Dealt with set pieces. Would have had 9 but Mings gave too many long inaccurate passes. Something that needs improving. Lead the defence well and player of match. Martin Keown too singled him out as outstanding man of match.
Targett 7.5
Wonderful recovery tackle on odegaard when Arsenal attacker looked clean through on left. Did so well he even got the goal kick with the sliding challenge. Has been excellent this season back to good standards.
Nakamba 7
Played the role well if disappointingly he was booked for cynical foul on Sakha. Steady on the ball made godo interceptions and passing good idea bringing him in though felt he tired and was missing for a few edge of box shots in second half where his positioning was wanting. Good and reliable for team naked down for his discipline.
McGinn 8
Felt he had super energy and had all the hustle bustle and requirements in his role. Pressed well and had a nighty fine match aside from his pathetic attempt to gain a foul and fall over losing the possession and nearly gifting opportunity to Arsenal attack. Raised his levels, his standrad and wonderful midfield engine lasted whole game a superb show. Strong performance. All round positives and had a good effort from outside box thumping it one but pushed away. Well done McGinn great game.
Barkley 7
Marked down for his petulance for being subbed though to be fair to him was having a great match in attacking sense when we given ball looked dangerous and threatening. Showed several bits of outrageous skills and moved ball well on to left foot one time for a sumptuous cross. Unlucky not to have scored in this match. Showed the energy and better levels of enthusiasm round the pitch . Certainly contributed in pressing. His sub was interesting as came at a time villa slightly in defensive mind and struggling to hold the ball he was taken off but Barkley someone who impacts more in offensive third and was sacrificed would be 7.5 but down to 7. Should have scored from wonderful corner kick routine involving McGinn and Grealish.
Grealish 7
Still a 7.5 performance but marked down .
A weaker game by Grealish standards and by standard of rest of team
Cynical fouls on him granted . He himself was booked and twice cynically fouled Sakha. Made some lovely moves wide left playing Targett in and assisting Watkins but felt he was generally lacking today. I observe how he shuns the ball from throw in sometimes with his back to play and thus provides no option for a throw in. I've witness this several times. Unlucky not to have had assist to barkley and Watkins but think given at angles which are difficult due to slight today in passing. Had a thunderous left foot shot which thought he scored. Not his day for me but the rest of team stepped up. Saw him drift on the pitch to the right side looking for the ball as times struggled to be fully immersed and get up and down the pitch. Particularly enjoyed how he beat 3 Arsenal players all around him up in attacking area. And us a wonderful talent. Made some great opportunities to score. Including corner kick routine for Barkley chance. Livid like Jack as he was adjudged to have given a foul on Willian at end which was nonsense. And think was unfairly carded for his dissent. Unbelievable
As was the most cynical of challenges on him by Xaka yellow card at the end stopped him in full flow .
Traore 7.5 Showed ability and great hunger and awareness. Part of reason enabled opportunity for Watkins goal was the alert of Traroe. Really superb attacking threat Has beating of players and was most useful in attack when on the ball
Watkins 8.5
Excellent . Always looked like had more goals a handful throughout. Only scored one should have had more. Wpuld be 9/10 if converted those chances and he was Unbelievable team work to track back 60 yards Sakha and following his run through Targett cut the pass out.Thought he maintained standards from West ham where i saw him being the best performing Villa player and he was seen scoring yet again today. Wonderful
Subs
Trezeguet 6
brought energy as per and a couple if decent tracking back and blocks but unable to really offer the attack anything. Wasn't so good but getting there again for match minutes.
Ramsey 6.5
Had a wonderful chance to score which he kinda made himself taking up Ross Barkley position and was tidy on ball if little involvement. Good faith by Dean to have him on and experience the game and win
Hit that shot a bit harder JJ and would have been a wonder goal. Lovely footwork when he received the ball to fashion the opportunity for his shot.
8/10.
Major improvement from Midweek.
Watkins may have had 2 or 3 goals really
Wonderful attacking play
And very solid and played like a team with and without the ball
Mings Man of the match
Watkins superb
McGinn back to his energetic self.
Up the Villa.
-
Mings was absolutely on his game today and deserved the BT MOTM.
As an aside the pitch looked a bit ropey compared to our usual standards.
If you want an example of why not to buy a top player wanting their last big pay day I give you Willian!
-
What penalty is he moaning about? I cant remember a single incident that looked like a penalty.
-
Did you actually watch the game Footy? Barkley 7.5, never in a million years.
-
I’m also glad that we get a break now. With the run of games plus the COVID aftermath we were clearly fatigued IMO We’ve got through it without injuries and players out for weeks
-
Last three games versus Arsenal - three wins, three clean sheets. :D :D :D
-
The Spanish Pulis can fuck off the straw clutching twat.
Yeah, fuck off Lego head.
That made me laugh
Quality. Should henceforth be his AKA.
-
You wait so long for a home win vs Arsenal and then we beat them three times in a row. If we could do just do Man United now....
-

Yeah, back to Lazy Town for Robbie Rotten
-
Mings can be God 2 if he cuts out the mistakes and concentrates for 90 minutes.
-
We played OK, but the midfield got bypassed too often and can do a lot better. The defence was brilliant, though, as usual, and Watkins is fab.
Barkley seems to have his arse in his hand for some reason. Maybe he wants to go back to Chelsea now Lampard's gone. Or maybe he thinks now we've got our man in Sanson, we won't be looking to sign him.
Also, Arsenal are shit. Arteta will be gone before the season's out.
-
He's got fuck all chance of playing for Chelsea or Tuchel and if he's looking to play for a team who dont look to improve the squad then he isn't going to get the kind of wages he's used to.
I still think the obvious answer is that he's frustrated because he knows he can do better, and will with a more games.
-
Our defence and keeper were very good today. Mings had one of those masterful games we know he is capable of, rather than one of the occasional hapless ones.
Targett has had a lot of unnecessary stick but he’s stuck it out and has improved a lot.
I enjoyed that game more in retrospect than during the game, although we had by far the clearer chances and could have won more comfortably.
Ollie was great, so let’s hope the lack of options up front doesn’t bite us.
Jack looked a bit leggy for him, although he was so far left sometimes he was nearly off the pitch.
-
Wins are always nice but the two v Arsenal have been timely ,first after home defeats v Leeds and Soton and now after West Ham.Shows character and belief.Mings was our oldest outfield player today,28 next month, and Martinez is 28.
Future looks bright.
-
Arteta crying in his post match interview was funny. Looks like a man clinging onto his job! Shame. The arses deserved nothing from that game and got nothing. UTV!

Thought Traore was decent enough, held his position to stretch them wide and retained the ball well enough, his tracking back was even improved until the few minutes before he got dragged.
Credit where its due. Traore did the goal and nearly did a second IMO. Better defensively first half. footy will gave him praise also but else its not existing on here (just worked me trough the pages). Just wanted to point out as I think he had a good first half in a difficult position for us and after all without him we hadnt won the game.
Love 1-0 s and as pointed out here we where good defensively with Mings. We did earn it IMO and again very nervwrecking, would have put on Elmo insted of Trez but Dean does it his way and was rewarded today.
-
I think Barkley is down on confidence. He started to show a bit of a spark at the beginning of the second half, hopefully more will come.
-
We can win when not at our best.....and I Love It!
-
Did you actually watch the game Footy? Barkley 7.5, never in a million years.
5 tops
-
Makes such a difference to have a set of players and coaches who are all helping each other.
Emi admits he wasn't good enough of Wednesday. Comes into training and gets the forwards to fire shots at him from the same angles, without letting anything past him.
Mings acknowledges his occasional brain farts, and now you see him taking no chances if there's any doubt. Just put the ball into touch and reset.
When you've got that attitude, the sky really is the limit.
That's what makes Barkley's strop all the more annoying. Strolls around and thinks he's above being subbed. Ramsey did more in his 15 minutes than Barkley in 75 – pressing well, dropping back when needed and moving the ball with intelligence
The week off will do them well. Wouldn't be surprised after a full week of training to see Sanson or Ramsey starting next week.
-
Stonking wins against the likes of Liverpool are brilliant but results like today demonstrate how far we have progressed.
Loving the expansive open attacking play but as I have stated previously, the time for all of that is when the game is "won"
Full marks to Smith and his team for getting the defence to put in a massive shift today after a disappointing performance earlier this week . Building on a solid defence bodes well for the future

That was a brilliant performance from Emi. I think that the two biggest deals last summer were Jack's new deal and signing Martinez. What a signing he's been. Arsenal must be mad letting him go.
-
Ross was 7/10. I marked him down from the 7.5 but he was petulant .Though it also shows he thought he was playing well and was annoyed he was taken off.
Next time someone calls me out for doing a crap job I am going to be petulant to prove that I was doing a good job.

Really solid defensive performance. Thought Watkins was really good. As for Barkley, I’m not too fussed with players stropping when coming off, he’ll soon get over it. I thought he was poor mostly apart from a half decent first 10 minutes of the 2nd half. A good win after that weak performance against West Ham
-
Didn't think Barkely was any worse than McGinn or Traore, and had a hand in some of our better bits of attacking play. The whole midfield was underwhelming today and put the defence under pressure. Thing with him sulking coming off is that you want players not to like being subbed. If he was nonchalant about it I'd be worried he didn't care about being pulled for underperforming.
Anyway pleased with the three points, and despite not being dominant we certainly had all the best chances and put in a great defensive performance. Well done to Mings, Cash, Martinez and targett who were all excellent today.
-
I’m liking Ramsey’s cameos too.
That little bit of skill towards the end was wonderful.
I'm sure it was but I was to busy hiding in a cupboard at that point to notice
-
A great win for Villa. Martinez done all his work in the first half I dont recall much getting past the back four 2nd half for him to save.
Beautiful pass from traore with the outside of the boot for the goal, Watkins really has the Midas touch at the moment. Very comfortable victory. I would have preferred to have a bit more ball in the later stages of the 2nd half but we did what we had to do.
Barkley was much better today than against west ham, in an attacking sense he had a couple of chances, was braver in possession and went on a few surges. However the off the ball work is still powder puff. Jockeying and jogging without urgency. All he's got to do is what Ramsey did in 15mins. press with intensity force a defender to launch it, make a nuisance of himself leave a foot in even take a yellow card. Fans won't hammer him for being a crap tackler look at paul scholes! Surely he understands the message now he's been hooked for the last few games. Many people were surprised he started.
-
Martinez made 3 key saves in the second half from memory.
-
Great result and what brilliant defending by the lads.
-
There build up play was better but we had the only worthwhile chances.
Pass, pass, pass, bore.
They’d be shit on mastermind. 27 passes and no points.
-

Indeed.
He's a step up from the options we had last year and part of the reason why we started so well this season.
-
I'm being lazy here but any Statto's on here care to let us know the last time we did the double over Arsenal? Pleeeeeease. Well done Villa.
1992/3 season. Saunders pen at home in a 1-0 win, Daley goal away, also 1-0.
Thanks Martin, appreciate it.
The day of the away game that season was the one when Small Heath were 4-1 up against Swindon and ended up losing 6-4 I think.

How very Blues of me.

We did beat them twice the year after down, but they were both at Highbury. Atkinson in the League Cup and then that great comeback 2-1 win late on with Whittingham and Townsend.

I remember checking this on teletext

Pepe was good for them but I thought Matty Cash was excellent, as were the rest of the defenders and the keeper. Our midfield went missing a bit at times but it was a cracking result, resolute and we have moved forward so much since last season. Delighted with the result as it gives us a bit of space between us and the teams below us. Mings and Watkins can scrap it out for MOTM, both excellent today.
Come on! Pepe - what, £70m?!
He was not very good and - for his price - he really is underwhelming.
-
Arteta crying in his post match interview was funny. Looks like a man clinging onto his job! Shame. The arses deserved nothing from that game and got nothing. UTV!
Arteta has become the new whingeing Wenger.
-
I saw him performing well as an attacking midfilder. Covered ground. Most energy I've seen from him and he was high up the pitch. Moved the ball well . This is all in regards to his attacking play which marked him well on but I mark him down for poor finishing.
His passing in the first half put us under real pressure: I recall 2 - one to Cash and another to JG - that were short and caused a counter attack from the Arse rather than us retaining possession. For someone who is lauded highly and could cost us more than Watkins, I think he needs to show a load more before I'm convinced.

I've lived in the south-east for almost 50 years and have seen most our our matches at Highbury and the Emirates, including 1981, but I think the 2-1 in 1993 was our luckiest victory. We were completely outplayed but Bosnich saved a Wright penalty and Andy Townsend scored the winner in the last minute. Real smash and grab.
-
Typical.
As the weather is looking decidedly shite from tomorrow for a few days.
I decided to go for a good cycle ride (locally I must add) and missed the game.
I think its the first complete game I’ve missed for ages.
Anyhow just watched the highlights on Sky and it looks like we battered them - not hung on:
https://www.skysports.com/football/a-villa-vs-arsenal/report/429057
-
Re the Arteta "penalty" claim, I cant think of reason at all why Martinez would be pulling Lacazettes shirt unless he was already being fouled. BT were very selective with the video stills which even then didn't look all that. If Rio thinks that a pen he's a prick who needs another drug test!
He would forget to turn up!

Bert’s first touches for the assist are fab - so too his turn inside for his dink shot.
I think he is going to be a great player for us once his ups his fitness levels and can track back and defend. Something that should come with good coaching.

Went apeshit went Tony scored!!!
Am sure it was 0.1 to us and not 1.2

Watching MOTD tonight 👍
-
It might have been mentioned already, but there are only 3 teams to have won more games than us. Not a bad stat which I'd have happily taken many months ago.
-
Who would yo say was Arsenal's best player earlier? Matt Ryan must be in with a shout.
-
I’d agree. I thought Odegaard added an edge to them when he came on.
-

Since we came back up we have got these by the bollocks. Even their 1 in 4 win against us was dodgy.

With relish ;D

Fantastic result. Glad the lads put a shift in and we are not in a Deano bad run. Lovely to not be calculating relegation maths but opposite
-
Having very little match day involvement Nakamba could be expected to tire, I think he performed well and was tidy on the ball. After West Ham all teams will double up on Grealish but he will always give teams problems. Solid no frills win.
-
For all their possession, very good passing and movement Arsenal have no cutting edge. As a Villa fan protecting a 1-0 lead is not the easiest watch but if you were a neutral you’d be thinking Villa did it today with ease. We were very good defensively. MOTM goes to Watkins. He is a great player and will improve. He has great desire. We do need to coach him how to shoot with the outside of his boot though. If he can perfect that skill he will score far more.
-

Having said that 5 of our last 7 fixtures are against teams above us or just below us (Spurs), so we need to make sure that we go into these last fixtures fearless and on the front foot.

Since we came back up we have got these by the bollocks. Even their 1 in 4 win against us was dodgy.
We match up really well v them generally I think. Of course they're nowhere near good enough to probably even be 5th or 6th this season but they have at least started looking better going forward in last two months so a clean sheet is very decent.
It reminds me of how we always used to give Chelsea really good games home and away from towards the end of Mourinho's first spell up to the horrible 8-0 game when in that period we'd always lose home and away to the Manchester lot like clockwork.
Just the way it works. I'm much more confident in playing Arsenal than Leeds or Southampton these days which is an odd feeling.
-
Nice comfortable double over the Arse. Karma you Tarquin cockney bellends for the elitist arrogance they showed before the cup final. A pretty ordinary team now.
-
We did beat them twice the year after down, but they were both at Highbury. Atkinson in the League Cup and then that great comeback 2-1 win late on with Whittingham and Townsend.
was in the North Bank for the 2-1 league win with an arsenal supporting mate. Managed to sit on my hands for the first goal, but when whittingham scored (penalty I think) I went up as did about 6 or 7 lads a couple of seats away from me. Had no idea there were other Villa fans about. The Arsenal supporters weren’t too happy about it and it was a bit moody heading down the stairs on the way out after the match.
-
Just read the most Arsenal comment ever. "I regret that I cannot be at games to boo Willian".

He should have drilled it towards the newr post and the whole afternoon would have been even more comfortable than it was. A player of real quality though.

That's two games now where Jack's been largely nullified so it looks like that's how teams will match up against us. Over to our coaches now to work out how to use him better and how we can use the extra man to our advantage.
-
I thought Dean got his post match comments spot on yesterday. Not sure what game Arteta was watching. Yes, Arsenal had a lot of the ball, but waht did they really do with it? Two saves of notes for Emi Martinez, and one of those was deflected to the near post off Ezri Konsa, and the other one was the free kick in the first half from Granit whotsisface. Other than that, they were all fart and no shit. We made their keeper work hard and had by far the better chances.
-
It really depends if you place any value in territorial dominance in the final third and the approach play there. Odegaard blazed over after making good space to shoot from inside the box with about 10 minutes left. He really should have scored.
On this thread, Emi being tested seems to be the only criteria for Arsenal going close.
A lot of the top sides play like Arsenal did but they have better end-product or they don't come across teams like us who regularly put their bodies on the line to block shots from everywhere. As part of our evolution we'll also have to learn that art of keeping a team pinned inside their own 18 yard box because counter-attacks and Jack weaving his magic won't always be enough.
Ultimately it was a hard-earned win against a good footballing side (naive in other parts of their game).

Small world. I was on a prawn sandwich invite for the 2-1 win in the East Stand so probably could have waved and smirked at you both.

Having very little match day involvement Nakamba could be expected to tire, I think he performed well and was tidy on the ball. After West Ham all teams will double up on Grealish but he will always give teams problems. Solid no frills win.
That's two games now where Jack's been largely nullified so it looks like that's how teams will match up against us. Over to our coaches now to work out how to use him better and how we can use the extra man to our advantage.
I think one thing Jack needs to start doing is playing the ball off as he receives it. For the majority of times he controls the ball, and takes it up to their defenders before either going past them or playing it off. By doing this it gives them that extra few seconds to get closer to him. If he played it off immediately it would put them in two minds as to what he was going to do.

Not sure why the post game MOTD analysis focused solely on Arsenal attacks and play and of course the Aston Villa crimes against humanity! Foul on Saka would never be a red even against Man Utd. The Martinez incident looks bad but again was only shown as a short highly edited clip and before condemning Emi I would want to know what went before. Certainly earlier in the game Pepe was fouling the keeper so maybe Arsenal had a plan to wind him up. Anyway tough. Thought Arteta sounded an arrogant twat in his post match who clearly feels he shouldn't keep losing to "the likes of Villa". Thought he'd be used to it by now

The Saka one was a foul on Konsa so fuck them.
-
It really depends if you place any value in territorial dominance in the final third and the approach play there.
The thing about Arsenal is, they always try to walk it in!

"The thing about Arsenal is, they always try to walk it in!"
Something I think we can reasonably have been accused of at times this season. Need to be more ruthless in front of goal. Defensively superb yesterday but a one goal lead and miss after miss leaves us vulnerable. Fabulous to see us creating so much though - fine lines!

It was 50/50 at best. Both players legs got tangled and basically both fell over. The Arse players wanted Konsa sent off for it. How fucking desperate was that? As for the "penalty" again no fucking chance. Their player was leaning into Emi and knew exactly what he was doing. Emi grabbed him to prevent himself being pushed over. Again desperate springs to mind. It could just as easily been given as a foul on the keeper.

That's true, there is a fine line with impressive possession football in dangerous areas and the final product. I just don't think Arsenal are as bad as some are making out. We had to concentrate and expend a fair whack of physical energy to see that game out. The squad have earned a couple of days off and no match for a week.

Saka runs into Konsa and makes the first contact.

And squeals like a pig when anyone is near him.

I'd still like to see him in the number 10 role, behind and to the side of Ollie, not as wide as he has been where I think it's easier to restrict the effect he can have on games. He seemed to do this in the last 15/20 minutes yesterday and was a lot more effective.

What was Wenger thinking, sending Walcott on that early?

This lad isn’t taking being an Arsenal fan too well.

That his zoom interview for AFTV?

Arteta’s bollox about red card & penalty decisions not going their way is nothing more than a deflection tactic.
They weren’t good enough again...

Just to go back to April 93, I went to the Sty with a good pal who is a nose (he had a free ticket... I know I know). Anyway I was listening to the game at Highbury and watching the rags beat up Swindon. They were 4-1 up with 30 mins to go, on comes Glenn Hoddle and took the mick, they couldn't handle his vision but he still wasn't as good as Sid. The faces as we left were priceless, they were all in disbelief, definitely one of the funniest games I had been to. Then they announced the score from Highbury, they were almost suicidal.

There was a group of five of us in the North Bank. We sat on our hands as well until we scored the winner, it was daylight robbery. You are right about it being moody afterwards, a few Arsenal fans were mouthing off at us.

Wasn't that your last Villa game, JD (see Dean Smith thread)?

Bless him he seriously needs to get laid. Or even just a handjob.
-
I've heard that he gave himself a handjob once. Absolutely chilling.

My pike-fishing mad Gooner cousin from Belfast posted a pic of himself at a lough, holding a fuck-off pike (he doesn't kill them), with the caption. " Grand weekend with four to the net!"
I replied "This weekend Arsenal had just the one to the net."
-
I imagine that is the longest time we have held a one nil lead in a single game.
-
Difficult to hold it for much longer unless you're up against Manu and 20 minutes Fergie time!!
-
I imagine that is the longest time we have held a one nil lead in a single game.
1895 cup final might beat it if they had such a thing as added time. We scored the only goal after 30 or 45 seconds depending on which source you believe.
-
Our record was hopeless at Highbury for many many years, was 1993 our last actual win there before they moved? We had the odd good draw there like the 2-2 in the league cup in 1996 but it was largely defeat after defeat in its last years when Arsenal were obviously very good.
I've seen a 5-0 loss at the Emirates but must've also seen 3 or 4 wins and we also conceded a 90th minute goal to draw 1-1 in 2008 so generally it's a venue we've been pretty good at since it opened, were robbed there last season in a game we should've won aswell.
Annoying we've now put our VP hoodoo against them well and truly behind us without 40k seeing it but there you go, bigger things to worry about currently in the world.
-
Only Man City have more wins at the Emirates.
And Arsenal...just.

Man City do have a three year advantage on us due to that whole "not being relegated" scam they were running.

Though according to the article below, Villa, Man City and Man U are all joint second behind Chelsea.

It was Eamonn, until the first home game against Bournemouth last season, when I came home for a while.

Much improved from the WH game, where we dropped from our high standards.
Thought Bert played well and worked hard; he's looking like a bit of a nightmare to deal with. Barkley had a much better game but was involved in a lot of good things, just not when we had the ball. Didn't like his reaction to being taken off -disrespectful to the sub when you behave like that. Reminded me of Carbone, in similar situations.
