The only automatics for me would be Rimmer, McGrath and Grealish.
My full backs would be Staunton and Gidman
Torn with centre back to play alongside McGrath (have the likes of Evans, Melberg and Laursen in mind)
Midfield Sid, Mortimer , Barry
Forwards Gray, Shaw and Grealish
Players missing out who really shouldnt from Graydon, Platt , Morley, Young and as much as I dislike him Yorke
-
Bosnich
Barrett
McGrath
Southgate
Staunton
Young
Taylor
Milner
Grealish
Benteke
Yorke
Subs: Martinez (if I'm allowed to count players I've seen "live" on telly), Laursen, Barry, Townsend, Platt, Daley, McInally.
-
Brian Little would have to be in the team.
-
Here it and please don't argue:
Rimmer
Gidman
Laursen
McGrath
Staunton
Cowans
Mortimer
Milner
Little
Gray
Grealish

Based on players I've seen in person and how they've played while with us:

and I can't belive I haven't included Little, Shaw, Mortimer and Withe,
I look at it that Gray was better than Withe, argue all day but possibly Platt better than Little, Yorke a more natural player than most and Cowens/Barry complete pairing - Mortimer still remains underrated imo
-
I'm pleased to see so many selections including Steve Staunton, a wonderful all-purpose player who could fill a number of roles and so would allow much tactical flexibility.
He had a wonderful attitude, as well.

Grealish
Platt

Yorke
RB was really tough post Gary Charles and Fernando Nelson. Could have swapped Hourihane for Parker but Hourihane’s exploits were mainly in the championship as opposed to Parker in the Prem. Andy Townsend just loses out to Rico.

Martinez
Delaney God Laursen Staunton
Platt Sid Milner

He was brilliant. Often played left midfield too under BFR and the early days of Brian Little. I always remember Keegan at Wembley saying we looked a better far more balanced side with him in the team.

But the question wasn't who are the most successful Villa players, but the greatest players you've seen.
Peter Withe was brilliant for us and a club legend for his role in the league and European Cup winning teams. However, Andy Gray was an unstoppable force at his best and with a better fitness record would have been wanted by any team in the world.

My only dilemma was a choice between Gary Shaw and Dwight Yorke.

Richardson often gets overlooked. He'd already won titles and cups with both Arsenal and Everton before he came to Villa and helped us to league runners up and league cup winners. A very tidy player.

Going from when I had a season ticket, around 1999/2000:-
GK Martinez
CB Southgate
CB Laursen
RB L. Young
LB Wright
CM Barry
CM Milner
RM Grealish
LM A. Young
CF Benteke
CF Dublin
Subs:- Friedel, Mellberg, Delaney, Delph, McGinniesta, Solano, Watkins
-
From 1989/90
4-3-3
1. Martinez
2. Delaney
3. Staunton
4. Mellberg
5. McGrath
6. Barry
7. Young
8. Platt
9. Yorke
10. Cowans
11. Grealish
-
From players I’ve managed to watch live regularly over the years.
Some may not the best and this is not the most balanced side we could field, but these will always be in my heart:
1. Spink
2. Evans
3. Wright
4. Ugo
5. McGrath
6. Birch
7. Daley
8. Platt
9. McInally
10. Sid
11. Yorke
-
Not many people selecting Ross McCormack, then...
-
Based on players I've seen live since 1965 and their performances for Villa (rather than whole career and other clubs)....
Rimmer
Gidman McGrath Evans Staunton
Cowans Mortimer Grealish
Yorke Platt
Gray
Subs: Spink; Southgate; Barry; Cropley; Morley; Little; Withe.
Of the current crop, best Villa team since 1982 IMHO, these may well get into my squad eventually...Martinez; Targett; Mings; McGinn.
-
So I am going from 1990 when started to go live but nicking the new 9 subs - this team will be different next week & then again the week after :-) high hopes for Martinez & Watkins to get in there shortly too

In goal, I’ve always argued that Rimmer is the best I’ve seen by miles, but I wonder if - when I finally actually get to see him play - Martinez might overtake him. I think he’s that good.

My sentimental selection might read (ie, I'll probably change my mind by tomorrow:
Spinky; Gidman, Slogger, McGrath, Staunton/Barry; Milner, Sid, Jack; Yorke, Withe, Benteke.
Bring 'em on!!
-
Colin Withers + 10 others
As a young lad watching a poor Villa team he stood out as a colossus.
Along with Harry Burrows two of my first heroes.
-
Big Colin (sorry, Tiny) was a real hero of mine as a youth too, BV.

First game feb 82 as an 8 year old, but those first couple of years games few and far between and memories a bit blurred, given that:
Bosnich (Martinez pushing already)
Barrett. McGrath. Laursen. Staunton
Barry
Cowans. Platt
Walters. Yorke. Grealish
Subs: Withe, Young, Mcinally, Ehigou, Southgate, Merson, Richardson, Saunders, Benteke
-
Bosnich
Gidman Nicholl Mc Grath Aitken
B Rioch Mortimer Cowans Morley
Gray B Little
Subs, Rimmer, Price, Evan's, Carrodus, Platt, Shaw, Withe.
-
Just as a variant, I selected the following team of players who came through our youth system and who I have seen play for the first XI.
Findlay; Gidman, Sleewenhoek, Cahill, Williams/Gibson/McDonald;
Davis, Barry, Hendrie;
Little, Shaw, Grealish.
Subs: two of the left-backs listed above, Turnbull, Walters, Daley, Luke Moore, Dazzler, Gabby and Oakes.
(Obviously, at least half of the staring team will change once the Ramseys and others get going...)
-
Sims
Gidman
McGrath
Aitken
Laursen
Barry
Cowans
Young
Little
Gray

-
Bosnich
Barrett McGrath Mellberg Staunton
Daley Platt Barry Grealish
Carew Atkinson
Almost exactly this for me, except Martinez for Bosnich, Ugo for Mellberg and Yorke for Carew.
-
Little, Gray, Shaw, Withe, Grealish and Yorke have to be the outstanding attacking players I've seen in a Villa shirt in the last 45 years but I can't play them all in my team so on that basis I'm not doing one :'(

Im surprised how many teams Grealish isnt in.
He's not in mine because I've only seen him once and we lost 2-1 at home to Bournemouth (first game back in Premier League).
I'm sure if I had seen him more, I would pick him.
