After 7 points in 9, an excellent win at the bitters, we must follow it up with a good performance vs a Palace team that will be shellshocked having conceded 7 at home to a side we put 7 past at Villa Park. Ok, football doesn’t work that way and I have no doubt they will want to make up for that. But we are full of confidence. Konsa and Barkley will be back in contention for a starting spot. I think we will edge this out 2-1.
Jack, Ollie for us
-
I watched the Lpool game and at 1 -0 down they were playing well and created a number of opportunities, then 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' hit them against the run of play and thet fell to pieces.
We have enough to beat them but they are not a bad team.
-
One of these days we are going to give someone a right tonking.
Oh, I forgot....we already keep doing that 😂
5-1 Villa.
-
Well, I've double checked my working and found nothing wrong, so I'm going with the maths. Us, 24-0. It would be 25, but they'll never add the right stoppage time. Everyone scores except Cash.
Perhaps more realistically, I think we're once again into 'he who scores first, wins' territory. And I'm glad the Barkley inclusion headache isn't mine!

5-1 Villa.
Keep up Andy, that's so last year! This year's version is "one of these Sunday evenings we WON'T hand somebody their arses by at least 3-0!"
Or the miserablist version "one of these days we'll follow up a superb away hammering by actually beating somebody shit at home."
-
Smash them to pieces please.
I genuinely like Woy but like him more if they roll over
-
Be more confident if the game was shifted to 7pm on Sunday and played in London ….. but I will go with a clean sheet and 2- 0 Villa
-
Villa 3 Glaziers 1
-
Please, please, please can we win this. Fed up of looking up the table after a really good performance, then wasting a game in hand. Let's make this a Christmas week for them like we had under Lambert in 2012 or whenever it was.
-
I can see a Boxing Day Brahma, match thread meltdown, festive feast in which we prevail.
4-3.

I'm trying not to get carried away after our win at the Baggies, truth be told they are so shit it would have been embarrassing to lose to them. I've seen more competitive pre-season friendlies against 3rd Division teams than the piss poor Albion could muster. They're certainly the worst team I've seen us play in the last 5 or so years, friendlies included.
That said, you can only beat what's in front of you and I expect Palace to be on a different level to Albion. Palace's weakness is their defence, the joint 2nd worst in the league. We'll need to improve in the final third and give Ollie the service he deserves. Put it in the 6 yard box and 9 times out of 10 he'll be on the end of it. Lumping high balls into the box and we'll play into their hands. As we saw at the weekend, walking it in isn't that effective either.
Much depends on two things; how much we're up for it and which Palace turn up. Generally they're not great on their travels with wins at Old Trafford (1st game of the season), Fulham and sticking 5 past the Albion. A useful point picked up at Spurs and West Ham show they'll be no pushovers. They'll be licking their wounds after the 7-0 home defeat to Liverpool. It will a tough game.
Our home form needs to dramatically improve after 3 defeats and a draw. With a tough end of year and January to look forward to, let's have the 3 points now lads.
3-1 Villa
-
Live on the Beeb. 2-1 to us.
Will have to be on our toes if Benteke, Ayew and Zaha are at the races, but hopefully with Barkley and Konsa back, we’ll have too much for them.
-
If we get a goal early we will win comfortably. We will. 3-0

Remember a game before xmas late 70 's perhaps where a john dehean header in front of the holte gave us the 3 points against Newcastle I think. Could live with that again

It was only two points for a win in the 70s.

John Deehan went to my junior/infant school (unfortunately named St. Andrews) and comprehensive school St. Peters. But he is eight years older than me so our paths never crossed. I do know he lived with his parents in Valley Road Solihull/Sheldon and when he was at Villa he drove a yellow Triumph TR7. I wasn't aware Jack Grealish also went to the same school as me.

Would be more confident if kippaxvilla2 had started the pre-match thread like the last 3. So if we lose it will definitely be on TV!

Palace are efficient but limited. Hopefully they are still reeling from the Liverpool defeat. We have the better team so if we are on our game we will win.

Well we beat Liverpool 7-2 and they beat Palace 7-0 so I think it will be 14-2.
-
Well folks nobody went to our school not even me if I could help it
However if we had seven apples and lLiverpool had two apples
I think we will beat palace 5 -0
Merry Christmas everybody !

Hopefully, third time lucky for Ollie. He has had 2 good goals overruled wrongly by VAR. Fingers crossed for him on this occasion.
Not usually like me but, I have a good feeling about this one. Let’s start making a fortress at Villa Park again for ourselves. Coupled with a continuing excellent away form...top 6...why not? We are Villa and, would you bet against us Ron?
-
Palace are normally a tough team to beat, well drilled defensively and have Zaha and a confident Benteke who are a threat.
2-1 to us please.
-
Sounds bizarre saying this after they’ve just got hammered. But I think they are a half decent side on their day, and better when counter attacking away from home. Benteke will be back for them and had actually hit some form for the first time in years before a 1 game ban. Zaha is obviously a good player, Ayew can cause problems and Eze is also a very good player for them.
Woy will want them to prove a point after saturdays collapse. All in all a different challenge to the last two games, where palace will try and play football on the counter rather than hoof it.
Harsh as it may sound I’d bring Barclay back in for Traore, and give him 60 odd mins, Traore back in then for Chelsea when barklay can’t play.
2-1 villa (Watkins, Grealish).
Martinez
Cash. Konsa. Mings. Targett
Luiz. McGinn
El Ghazi. Barclay. Grealish

Jack went to Our Lady of Compassion, then St Peter’s. I must have been at St Peter’s around the same time Damo. Left there in 88

Watkins hat-trick please santa
-
Watkins hat-trick please santa
Given how VAR has it in for him, Ollie has to score 5 to get a hat-trick.

VAR to fuck off forever is top of my list, just above Arsenal relegation and Mee to do his knee

I used to see John Deehan at St Thomas More church when I was a kid but I think he had moved to the Albion by then. I remember his TR7 - pretty distinctive.

Bllcks just saw Richard beat me to it

Well, we are front and centre on Boxing Day. The perfect chance to show the world the progress we are making. The fact we are on our way back, big style.
It can’t possibly go wrong, can it?
5-1 Villa.

I never knew Jack went to St Peters. Me and Damo were in the same year, we left in '87. My family's parish church was St Thomas Moore, the ugliest church in Brum.
John Deehan Snr was my Dad's best mate. John would invite the old man down to watch our games when we didn't have Sky. They were both Villa mad but John was something else, if we were ahead he couldn't watch the last 15 minutes and would go and tend to his roses leaving my Dad alone chuckling away at his antics in the living room. I can tell you dozens of other stories but we're getting off the topic, safe to say lets hope they enjoy Boxing Day from their heavenly sofa.
-
FTEFFC! 3-1.
-
Thought they were oddly unlucky against Liverpool, who surpassed Southampton against us in giving the most ruthless finishing performance of the season. We'll have to be on it to keep up our form here.
-
I think he was unlucky not to have a better managerial career, Deehan, but he made some strange choices. I saw him out in Wigan after they won the Div 3 title in 96 (I think) with top scorer Graeme Jones. He left Wigan to become an assistant somewhere else, which struck me as odd at the time.
-
I predicted a 3-0 win at the Baggies so hopefully my form continues - I like our chances here - yes they'll be smarting from the 7-0 hammering last time out and are certainly dangerous up front, but our back 5 have really shown their metal this season and with Dougie and SJM stamping their authority in the middle of the park, I think'll we will have too much for them.
2-0
UTV
-
... our back 5 have really shown their metal....
Chris Nickel was better.
-
I’d keep Traore in the side.
-
I think we'll have to with both Barkley and Trez still out.

I think we'll have to with both Barkley and Trez still out.
Trez is still out, but Smith said both Barkley and Konsa should be back in training today. Might be a bit soon, though, depending on what, if anything at all, he has been able to do while out.

Thought Smith was quoted after West Brom, that Barkley would be fine for the palace game?
-
The pre-Palace presser Smith gave yesterday where he says about a return to training is on the website now. There's also a gallery of photos from training, don't know if they were taken yesterday or today, but I can't see either Barkley or Konsa in them.
-
One of the less offensive London clubs with a set of supporters who for the most part seem decent enough.
Checking the records I find I was at our first ever league meeting in 1967, a 1-0 home defeat about which I have zero recollection.
Since then we have played them in league and cup 42 times. No dramatic cup encounter which we talk of in the memories section, no massive thrashings for or against, no goal of the season contender, no big controveries or crowd incidents.
Both Sir Brian and BFR had their final managerial games for us with defeats at Selhurst Park. But even these were just generally below par games at the end of poor runs culminating in Doug deciding to show off his roses.
What a shame there wont be a crowd there. Some jealous small heathen could have smuggled himself in disguised as a glazier and hurled insults at Grealish.
Greasy reacts and launches a kung fu kick on his blue nose leading to a rest of the season ban and the Vile lose every game and get relegated.
Instead we spawny bastards win 2-0 and a month from now we will barely recall the encounter.
-

Chris Nickel was better.
But only when we were in the lead
-
2-1 Villa win.
-
As long as we approach it like Burnley and remain sharp at the back, we'll be okay. We've been a little too nonchalant in other home games (not always helped by a couple coming after international breaks). If we stay wary of their pace on the break, I think we should be winning this and swinging back our home form. I'd probably keep the side as is. Jack and John are fit as butchers dogs, the wingers are relatively fresh and Dougy had a game off last week. It'll be the Chelsea game we may switch 1 or 2. This will show us how fit we are between now and Utd. I just think that the Palace game is an ideal time to turn our Villa park form around. Watkins needs a rest in one of the three games. As much energy and running as he's showed, its a hard job. I think also Marvellous to come in for one of the Chelsea or Utd games for Doug.
I then think we've got a week between Utd and the cup game, which is enough time not to need to play second string. We should go into it looking to win.
-
Think this will be 3-0 to Villa with a much deserved and needed double from Ollie Watkins and anyone else for the third
-
Would bring Konsa back for this if he's o.k.
Hause has done well but think West Brom and Burnley were ideal opponents for him to look good. Of course Benteke will be a threat in the air but I'm sure Mings-Konsa will be o.k dealing with that. Thought of Zaha cutting in and running at Hause directly is why I wouldn't start him.
Barkley as impact sub for last 30 minutes. Hasn't played for 5 weeks now and can't see AEG or Traore being dropped after how they play on Sunday. Nice problem to have. Frustrating if Barkley does return he'll be out again as can't play v Chelsea. At least he'll be fresh for Man. United and Liverpool which are games he can make an impact on.
Forgot the prediction....2-1 us. We're overdue a home win and given our next two after this are Spurs and Everton it would be just us to go 4 months without a home win while being on verge of top 6.
Palace haven't got that great a recent record at VP....just one goal in last 4 visits.
-
Difficult one to call this. Your first thoughts are easy Villa win, but then the doubts start to creep in a bit. I’d take a 1-0, or 2-1 definitely.
-
... our back 5 have really shown their metal....
Chris Nickel was better.
But only when we were in the lead
I’ll be brassed off if we don’t win

Palace blow hot and cold. They are a decent side who certainly have more to offer than Brighton and Burnley who we lost points against recently but we are learning from our mistakes.
We now attack from all angles and will create lots of chances. Will we take enough of them chances is the question?
I think yes. 2-1 to the villa. :)
-
Playing Palace brings back memories of our 'Friend' Kevin, I think I'm right in saying that he hasn't refed us since THAT game, it could be just coincidence, but I doubt it, I reckon after the match Villa said they didn't want him to referee us again and if that is so well done the PGMOL.
Anthony Taylor is the ref for Saturday.
-
Please, please, please perform Villa on national TV. That's all I ask!
-
Exactly the kind of match we have been dropping points in so a bit cautious about this one.
-
Aston Villa v Crystal Palace: Jack Grealish v Wilfried Zaha best bits as they go head-to-head on BBC Sport - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/55416635
-
I think this will be a real test. Palace have some good attacking players these days and Eze, Zaha, Benteke and Schlupp had been combining really well before the Liverpool game (which Benteke was suspended for). I hope we've learned the lessons from previous home games and strike a better balance between defence and attack. They can definitely hurt us on the counter if we're caught with our back line all well inside their half, for instance. If we have a better conversion rate than in recent home games then we should win, but I think we will be wasteful again and a draw seems a likely result between two teams who are pretty evenly matched. I'll go 2-2 with us finally coming from behind to get a point.
-
The is a storm brewing for Boxing Day. Bloody hope it’s not called off. Looking forward to a day of beer, food and shouting “come on JACK!” at the telly very loudly and often.
-
Unchanged. Brom Barkley on if needed or to give him some time.
-
Heads says probably 1-2 based on how our season has gone.
Heart says a straight forward 2-0.
-
Sometimes in life you have to back yourself so going 3 -0.
-
FIFA21 predicts a 4-0 home win. Watkins 2, Targett and Grealish. Palace barely get a sniff.
-

I agree about Kevin Friend and his absence from our games since is surely more than coincidence. Equally, we appear to have gone about it with more class than Nuno and his beef with Lee Mason, but maybe no surprise there.
When I think of Boxing Day fixtures I can’t see past West Ham mid-late 70’s balloons etc and a 4-1 win. Stood on the Witton terrace with my dad and his brother (both blues and both now gone sadly) and my uncle (red scouse). Happy days and I am sure tomorrow can be similar save for the amazing atmosphere.
-
I hope Watkins scores 1:1 for me I think we might play Barkley from the off will have the Chelsea game to recover.
-
I can not see what the problem is with Nuno calling out Mason.
Lee Mason is not good enough and well done Nuno for calling him out and sticking to it.
-
Couldn't agree more; Nuno wasn't abusive or insulting, just saying what most people might agree with.
Watch him get a ban now!!
-
The Met Office is predicting SW winds gusting up to 38 mph. It will be a very good test of how we adapt to conditions. Bashing it long will be warranted when needs must.
Really looking forward to this game. Sad we can't be there.
If the full (wing) backs are on their game, we will win.

Am I right in thinking this is the first time in history we’ve played a league game live on the BBC?
Probably, when was the last time a league game was on the BBC? It’s a great chance for the freewheelin’ Aston Villa to put on a show for the whole country.
-
Absolutely vital we start winning more regularly at home.

I have a vague recollection of us losing to Liverpool live on TV.
Google says it was Friday 20th January. We lost 3-1 with Ian Rush scoring a second half hat trick.
It was either on BBC or ITV.

The Everton game was ITV because they had the contract for the old First Division at that point.
The last league game I remember on the BBC was against Liverpool in around January 1984 (lost 1-3 to a Rush hat trick on a frozen pitch) but there must have been one after that.

It’d be lovely for a comfortable win today! UTV

When you consider the sort of stats obsessives football attracts I am thoroughly shocked that there isn't a complete list of every football match ever shown on tv in the UK somewhere on the Internet.
Anyway, a win will be nice today, living in the heart of Palace Country.

The Beeb have covered many historic occasions, the Coronation of The Queen, weddings of The Queen and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Diana and Prince William and Kate, funerals of King George VI, Churchill, The Queen Mother and Diana, but today's occasion, the first time they are showing a Villa Premier League match live has to top all of them.

Palace are one of those teams who are hard to play against but also play half decent football. Should be a good game. I'll go 3-1. Watkins to get one which is not ruled out for an eyelash being offside.
-
I remember that 6 - 2. Or at least the first half. Watched it at home with my mate, and said we would have a scotch and dry every time Villa scored. It was carnage. Havent drunk scotch since.
-
Don’t like stats today. Zaha has never scored against us and Palace have not scored in last 3 at Villa park losing all...a bit like Brighton had never won☹️

🤣 yes Olaftab!
One game I am not worried about, since we are 22 for 12, as I still see this season as survival. We are good, but if we make mistake, we lose, if not, we will win comfortably

Funnily enough I watched the highlights the other day. Remember it like yesterday, probably as there was so little live football on TV back then. I clearly recall Keown getting absolutely slaughtered by our fans. Olney and Ormandroyd up front, 2 of the lankiest villa players ever.
Defo ITV as Brian Moore is commentating.

Unchanged team. Still no Barkley in squad, Konsa on bench.
