Villa won 3-2 today at the Emirates in a friendly. Luiz & Jacob Ramsey (2) scored for Villa. Aubameyang with both goals for Arsenal.
-
Do we know what the line-up was? No SJM, Mings, Jack, Hourihane. Did Cash play?
-
What were the line ups?
Edit: beat me to it newby ::)
-
This Ramsay kid seems to have a habit of getting amongst the goals whatever level he plays at - on loan last season for Doncaster, pre-season friendly for the first team. Promising.
-
From the images online we had a lot of kids. They certainly played Aubemayang, Lacazette, Elneny.
-
Our local newspaper's in-depth report on the match.

Jacobs 2 goals on his debut for Doncaster against Tranmere and a little interview after too

Doesn't give the line up's but certainly gives more detail than our local paper

Weird that there's barely a mention on the official site, or the official twitter.

I think that qualifies as 'barely a mention'!
-
Posted after the event anyway. The coverage of anything other than the 1st team (and sometimes the Women) is atrocious.
-
Ramsey is a seriously good player, but I don't know if he's ready yet.
I hope I'm wrong.
-
There's a blog/article here by John Townley about Jacob Ramsey (and his 2 brothers) http://www.avillafan.com/32504/jacob-ramseys-rise-at-bodymoor-heath/
-
"Aaron is one of the standout players in Villa’s U16s and hopes to join Jacob in the professional ranks before too long. If Aaron makes it, the Ramsey’s could become the second pair of Brummie Brothers to play for Villa after the turn of the millennium – Luke Moore and Stefan Moore both came through the academy around 2005."
Didn't take long to forget about the Gardner brothers :).
-
Jacob Ramsey has been the one of the reserves I've been excited about for a while. He reminds me of Lampard the way he just drifts into the box late and seems to always find himself in the right spot. I think he could turn out to be a real gem.
-
Aaron sitting in front of the defence and Jacob bombing on and supporting the forwards in future then.
Subject to loan moves, the U23's should be strong this year.
-
Is Jacob ready to compete with Conor and Marvellous? If not, send him on loan to a Championship team that's not likely to struggle and see how he goes.
-
Has there ever been 3 brothers play for the club before? Or even 3 members of the same family?
-
Definitely ready if not potentially better.
-

The Wallaces at Southampton.
-
Ramsey (J) is quality.
-
Definitely ready if not potentially better.
I agree, I'd have him in the first team squad until Christmas and loan him out in January if he's not quite where we want him to be by then. Sometimes we need to be a bit braver about giving kids a chance.
-
Agreed. Would also like to see Archer and Vassilev given a couple of opportunities.

That's fine, but it's no excuse for not spending money. If they turn out to be good enough then great, it just means you end up with a decent first teamer on the bench.
-
Agreed. Would also like to see Archer and Vassilev given a couple of opportunities.
Yep, Agreed on both. My team for the EFL cup next week would have all of them involved, probably Kesler, Barry and Chukwuemeka as well, with a handful of senior players starting and on the bench to add experience.
-
Kesler is not up to it yet and Barry, for all the potential he has, is only 16/17 and largely untested at U18 level.
-

Maybe, but you could easily have both on the bench to come on for some experience if things are going well.
-
I could live with that scenario.
-

Cheers Dave, I'd forgotten about the Wallace family.
-
The three Stein brothers all played for Luton but I don’t think all at one time.
-
Looking up the Stein Brothers I hit the brother, mother load and came across this list from the London Evening Standard from 2002 (there's more than I thought and I had no idea there was so many Clarkes!!)
If Anton Ferdinand breaks into West Ham's first team, he will add the family name to a long list of brothers to have played League football.
And if he goes on to gain international honours, the pair will join an elite set of siblings who have played for England.
However, several sets of brothers, notably the Hoddles and the Bradys, have had their footballing genes less evenly distributed.

How long was Grealish on loan for and what age did he first play with the seniors? It just seems that we get players aroung eighteen-nineteen who look promising but never get a run out, just wondered what jacks time-scale was.

He had just turned 18 when he went to Notts County in 13/14 his league debut for us was a couple of minutes against Man City at the end of that season. Jacob Ramsey is on a similar schedule so far but his loan spell was cut short. He's just turned 19 and that was the age Jack made his breakthrough with us.

It's harder to throw a centre half into a game like that, I'd probably try to get him out on loan instead.
-
It's a shame for his development that his loan was cut short by lockdown. Interesting to see whether he's involved in the first team squad this year or whether he goes out on loan to get the experience that he missed out on.

If it were me making the decision I'd start him in the cup (and in the 3rd round if we get through) and have him training around the squad for the next month. If he's clearly not ready the loan window will still be open then so we can get him to a top half of the championship side. If he's done ok then keep him around a look again in January.
-
He must be training with the squad to have been involved against Arsenal. He'll be involved against Burton I'm sure, it's just whether he starts or comes off the bench. He's likely to be in the 18 when the season starts, it's just going to depend on whether he's getting minutes.
The Premier League are expecting teams to fulfill their fixtures, which could make it harder for teams with smaller squads to loan out their younger players this year. If we're wary of losing players for this reason, it would be better to actively involve them.
-
The three Stein brothers all played for Luton but I don’t think all at one time.
Brothers Jack, George, and Jimmy Milburn all played for Dirty Leeds in the 1930s and 40s. Between them they made over 750 appearances, but as far as I can see all three never played in the dirty Leeds team together.
-
Didn't Bruce and Neil Rioch and Brian and Alan Little play for us in the early 70s.

Yes they did but Neil and Alan were not fit to be on the same pitch as their bros. Don't think they played many first team games.

Just a year or two before my time but remembered the names. Dad mentioned Neil Rioch yesterday and said pretty much the same thing (insinuating he was signed to get Bruce) but still brothers that played for us.

That's a bit unfair. Neither would say they were anywhere near their brother's standard, but Neil in particular was a decent squad player and one of only about three or four who played for both Tommy Docherty and Ron Saunders.
-
Yes I accept "not fit to be" is a bit unnecessary it's just that Bruce and Brian were exceptional players and made ordinary players look...well rather ordinary.

First Englishman to touch the ball.

Clearly remember Neil scoring with a great header at the Witton end. He didn't get many starts.

We play Man U at Villa Park this weekend

I'm not surprised tbh. Man City will probably play whoever Man United were due to start against in a friendly too.

It was also reported that Grealish left the ground onboard Manure team bus and McGuire was arrested for not wearing a mask in a Witton Road Kebab shop.

I’m not hearing much but I do hear a rumour that Watkins has just scored for us.
I can’t confirm or deny either way... just reporting what I’ve heard!

Ignore the above - Ian Taylor just tweeted it’s 1-0 with Watkins having scored. Excellent.

As per someone on Twitter:
Steer
Cash Konsa Mings Targett
Luiz McGinn Hourihane
Trez Watkins Grealish

Elsewhere on Twatter it's mainly our U23s. Load of shite that platform is.
-
Good to hear Steer in goal.
He can play Tuesday as well then Martinez for next monday
-
Apparently finished 1-0.

Obviously never a true guide to the season but are we allowed a little optimism having beaten Arsenal and Man U in pre season?
-
Well, better to win that not. Good standard of opposition and workout.
-
Beat Man Utd at Villa Park. History says we'll finish fourth now then.

Feet firmly on ground, I remember Didier Six. Still nice though, it's been too long.
-
I think we beat them in the league cup a few years after the opening day "never win anything with kids" match.
1999 possibly?
-
Yep, 3-0 in the League Cup.
-
Comment from Tony Daley who watched the game earlier. Very encouraging.
Was at Villa Park today to witness a high tempo and very energetic Villa performance! Players looked lean and fit. Very promising build up to the start of the season ⚽️👏🏾👏🏾

If we get Martinez beforehand, I'd want him playing on Tuesday - needs to start the gelling process as soon as possible.

95-96 that was.

If anyone knows whether they're lean and fit its Tony Daley. Have you seen the guy's physique, at 52? Far more impressive than that fecker from Normal People that we're all supposed to have the horn for.
-
Awesome paid the £5 only to be told content is blocked and I cannot watch it
-
Here’s the goal
https://twitter.com/lukeking_/status/1304888704532647942?s=21
-
Our goal was very good, big crossfield pass from Grealish to Trez who steadied himself and put a good flat cross over between the defence and keeper for watkins to meet 6yards out around the back post. Great football.
-
That ManUre kit is shocking.
-

I went to that. Bozzy got hilarious stick from the Holte end all night, infact those were the first signs him and Fergie had already fallen out as he was sent out ridiculously early for the second half to warm up.
Solskjaer was the only other regular, rest were kids so similar to the Liverpool team we played in the league cup. Joachim scored a cracker in the first half:

This is the stream for the game

-
Watching Watkins highlights, he looks to be very good at those stooping headers which bounce off the floor and wrong foot keepers. Great team move too.
-
That ManUre kit is shocking.
I dunno, I reckon Harry Maguire really suits prison stripes.
-
He can head a ball - 60% better than we have, plus the advantage of actually scoring. I’m excited.

I know the official line is that Bozzy was a poor trainer with a bad attitude when he went to them etc etc but I've always thought Ferguson petty enough to harbor a grudge that Bosnich came to us in the first place.
-
The goalmouth scramble on 42 is madness. No idea how they didn’t score.
-
I know we won, but on another day we could have conceded 3 or 4 at HT. The midfield still can’t retain the ball. Jed Steer has been superb.
-
Thanks for posting pictures of the goal TV. I like the way Watkins lost his markers to anticipate the cross in. Great move, nice goal. Lack of physicality in midfield still needs sorting, as much as I like Duggee and SJM.
-
That United kit just has to be the worst i have ever seen them wear and there have been a few Nice goal by Ollie ,first of many hopefully
-

We weren't on it first half but we were much better 2nd half. Some good performances but the standout was McGinn for me, some of his long range passing was top draw.

I noted with interest that Cash was replaced by Elmo. With Guilbert sat on the bench. I reckon he’s off.

I dont like this, penalty to Manchester United.
-
First half showed that against the best sides in the division, we're still going to be spending a lot of time in our own half without much of the ball. Second half showed me that against the rest, we'll be taking the game to people and giving as good as we'll get. Get Martinez, Rashica and Traore in and we improve on that. Add in a robust DM too, fingers crossed, and it's onwards and upwards for the mighty Villa.
-

Deano's not that stupid. Expect Freddie to be playing on the left later this month.

Was lucky enough to get a press pass today through a
Media Pal and be there, there’s definitely an air of confidence with the lads, we look very fit also.
Can’t wait for a week Monday.

mmmm..... have to say that’s not filled me with confidence

Here's extended highlights...
Looks like Cash took a roasting in that first half!
-
It’s only highlights of a friendly I suppose, but Cash looked awful.
-
Were the highlights produced by MUTV? If so, they will have been selected from their perspective. That is, the bits their fans will enjoy.
-
We looked a bit frail defensively down our right hand side

That's because they took McTominay off at HT who ran the first.

Grealish could have played through other players twice, but held onto possession for no reason whatsoever. He did this constantly last season.
He has to play Samatta in here.

Bit concerning that Cash could/would probably have been sent off for his high/rash tackle on Daniel James if it hadn't have been a friendly.
-
Plenty of time for Cash to come good I’m old enough to remember Ugo’s horrible debut against Norwich
😀

We need to hold on to Guilbert. He should start at right back. Cash will need some time to adjust to the Premier League.

Looked like frustration at being beaten every time to me.
-
Looks like Cash has a lot of work to do to get up to speed. But full back is a position that you can look horribly exposed when you’re not quite at the races. I remember watching Evra when he first came to Man U and thinking he was garbage.
Trez looked to be at the heart of most of our good attacking play.

Yeah I agree, that high challenge was almost Hutton-esque!
In fairness he wasn't beaten every time - and those disguised (really good) longer balls from Beek I'd imagine would trouble most defences.
-
I remember that Evra debut and thinking United had been done over. Awful performance. Ended up doing OK though.
Hopefully Cash will be given the time to develop.

Yeah I agree it was poor play from Grealish - I couldn't help concluding that Grealish must not rate Samatta at all.
-
We were lucky in the first half against United that they didn't break there necks to get onto Luke Shaw crosses that went across our goal but I'm happy with the win.
-
I keep seeing the words lucky, what if, why do we insist on making excuses for beating a bloody strong Man Ure side as well as an Arsenal side.
We are Aston Villa.
Believe.
-
The Plastic fans were claiming it was pretty much their 2nd team. I could care more. I love a winning habit. Long may it continue.
-
Good movement from Watkins for the goal.
-
I think it was their first team GK and DF, but reserve MF and FW
-
Wasn't impressed with Cash. Looked all over the place at right back; slow and off balance. He just looked like a right footed Targett to me.
Anyway, first game and all that. Guilbert is our best player in that position.
