Sarkic and Drinkypoos have already gone.
I thought Drinkwater's loan had been extended? Yes, I forgot about Sarkic. Must pay closer attention.
-
Heaton, Nyland, Engels, Guilbert, Mings, Grealish, Luiz and McGinn all stay. Everyone else get rid. Honourable mention to Trezeguet for those late goals but he can join the rest of them out the door for the simple fact that they just weren't good enough. Suso's been shown the door for a reason.
-
Loans end when the season finishes. He's Chelsea's problem now.

Everyone else? Even the up and coming U23s such as Archer, Vassilev, Ramsey and Barry?
-
Goalkeeper is the tough one as it all depends when Heaton and Steer are fit. If they were both fit i'd bin the other 3 and go with the U23 keeper and/or get a young prospect in to comepte at U23 level and be 3rd choice. Kalinic is shit, Reina is heading that way and Nyland we could probably get a few million for so may as add tat to the transfer kitty.
But if both are a way off fitness wise I guess we'd have to bite the bullet and keep Nyland or loan in Reina again, or preferably loan in someone that isn't in decline.

So two goalkeepers and six outfield players, means another...twelve new signings?
Gotcha.

that's the minimum, 5 more if we want a full squad, 3 signings a week for the entire summer, seems reasonable and not at all a ridiculous over-reaction.

I think Steer, Elmohamady, Targett, Hourihane can still be useful squad players. I think Hause, El Ghazi, Nakamba, Wesley, Samatta and Trezeguet can improve after having this season under their belt. Jota can go, on occasions at Small Heath he looked their best player but that isn't saying much. On other occasions he was all fart and no shit and that was in the Championship. He isn't Premier League quality in my opinion. We just need a few top quality signings who will be regulars. There is no point weakening the squad but getting rid of decent fringe players who will be needed at some point as cover.

Both missed Konsa who had a great end to the season. I do admit to finding it funny that someone put Nyland in a list of just 8 players they'd keep from the entire squad.

Engels being one of the few who has proved himself worthy of avoiding the cull seems a bold choice as well.

I was going to say. The last thing we need is replacing nearly the whole bloody squad.

Here's mine. Several with either, meaning stay or go, perhaps use them to swap with other clubs?
-
Taylor,Jota,Lansbury,Nakamba.,AEG can go. If Steer and Heaton are fit for the start then Nyland can go.Samatta might have to stay as cover as Wesley's return looks distant.
There are some young prospects missing from the list.Clarke and Mungo Bridges have trained recently with the first team squad.Jacob Ramsey has come on as a sub and did well at Doncaster .Bree played a lot for Luton.Surprised to see that O'Hare has moved permanently to Coventry.
-
Current Squad excluding loan players, kids and those on our released list:
GK: Heaton, Steer, Nyland, Kalinic
RB: Guilbert, Elmohamady, Bree
LB: Targett, Taylor
CB: Konsa, Engels, Mings, Hause
MF: Luiz, McGinn, Hourihane, Lansbury, Nakamba
AM: Grealish, El Ghazi, Trezeguet, Jota
FW: Wesley, Samatta, Davis, Hogan
Sell/Get Rid: Nyland and/or Kalinic, Bree, Taylor, Lansbury, El Ghazi, Jota, Samatta, Hogan
Will probably be sold: Grealish
Assuming, the above we'll need:
1 x GK - either challenger/future replacement for Heaton; or a number 3 if we keep Steer as understudy and have whacked our budget on outfield players. Nyland as a number 3 might be ok.
1 x LB - we can't have Neil Taylor as an option in the PL. Not convinced about Targett but not giving up yet, so either a promising young LB, or a veteran with PL experience.
1 x MF - spend big money on a central midfielder to complement Luiz and McGinn. Keep Nakamba and Hourihane as understudies.
2 x AM - spend big money to replace Jack, and upgrade El Ghazi. Keep Trezeguet as a sub/alternative, as he has the knack for important goals, and does at least graft.
2 x ST - our shallow/unreliable pool of strikers almost cost us this season; the lack of a goalscoring threat has cost of us loads. We can't trust Wesley and Davis to get more than about 10-12 between them, so we need to get the best striker we can possibly afford, and another possibly a promising youngster or maybe a veteran who will chip in a few or come off the bench.
Supplement that with any quality youngsters we can get hold of /promote to fill out the squad.
So that's 6/7 new players (depending on whether Jack stays), 4 of whom need to be quality starters.
-
Forgot about Hogan and Bree. GO and GO.

Nyland is nothing like good enough for this level.
Has 1 game like Leicester in the LC SF where he looks incredible then 2 where he looks like he's never caught a ball.
You need to be able to rely on your keeper, I have never consistently thought we can rely on Nyland.

I like him, I saw some things he said in the Norwegian press after he joined and really wanted him to do well but he's just not quite good enough. If we'd gone down I'd have been happy to keep him and Steer and let them fight it out for the gloves but now that's changed. I'd keep one as a 3rd choice if they're happy with that but I don't see either being a regular for a premier league team that does anything except struggle at the wrong end of the league. I'd actually have preferred to let both go and keep Sarkic but it's a bit late for that.

A goalkeeper needs to exude self belief in both their own ability to do their job and in commanding those in front of them. He just doesn't, at all. Like he's suffering with imposter syndrome.
-
Nyland is not good enough at this level.

He reminds me of the rabbit caught in headlights analogy. Looks terrified all the time.

He might get the odd one from a goalmouth scramble or a deflection...
-
Would try and swop Taylor for a decent up and coming LB from championship.
Lansbury is an obvious one but probably won't be any takers even with just 12 months left on his deal.
Jota might get an offer from Spain.
Would keep AEM around for another 12 months.
His goal run at end of season probably increased Trez fee so thanks for playing huge part in keeping us up but we simply need better out wide than what we've had this season.
Would loan out Davis aswell until January.
All that will probably mean 7-8 new signings. 3-4 to go into first 11 and other half more long term projects. Hopefully all our outfield signings won't be project players which is where it went wrong last summer.
-
Sarkic has gone to Wolves? Blimey, is he highly rated or has he been punished for doing something wrong ?
-
With the state of Covid impacted finances outside of the PL, it’s not going to be easy shifting some of our players who are of that level. We might be stuck with them if we decide not to accept less than their current value. And that will likely include some form of salary absorption. Players like Taylor, Lansbury or Jota will be on decent PL wages I imagine.
-
Engels has been on the outer, good in the air but very slow. It really comes down to what Jack decides doesn't it?
-
Keepers
Keep - Heaton, Steer, Nyland
Sell - Kalinic
Right backs
Keep - Guilbert, Elmohamady
Sell - Bree
Left Backs
Keep - Targett, Taylor
Central defenders
Keep - Konsa, Engels, Mings, Hause
Central midfielders
Keep - Luiz, McGinn, Hourihane, Nakamba
Sell - Lansbury
Wingers
Keep - Grealish, El Ghazi, Trezeguet
Sell - Jota
Forwards
Keep - Wesley, Samatta, Davis
Sell - Hogan
-
Those sales leave us with a squad size of 21, so 4 incoming players. I'd go 1x forward, 1x winger/attacking midfielder, 1x defensive midfielder, 1x central defender.
That'd hopefully seem like minimal player churn to everyone involved, with the only players moving bring ones who are barely/not playing. Concentrate on bringing in quality rather than quantity - I'd hope most/all of those were in the £20m+ bracket, and at least one in the £30m+ bracket
Only sell Grealish if the money being offered is ridiculous. For me, £150m wouldn't be enough. As has been said elsewhere, he's not only our best player, he's also our most recognisable. I'd assume the owners want to build a 'global brand' or somesuch, in which case he's worth his weight in gold to us. The price should reflect that.

CB: Konsa, Engels, Mings, Hause
MF: Luiz, McGinn, Hourihane, Lansbury, Nakamba

Doubt there will be six or 7 coming in this summer. Lots revolves around grealish, as much as I’d love him to stay, the situation needs to be sorted out one way or another ASAP, so the club can plan. Need experienced and quality CDM to compete with Mings and Konsa, experienced LB, tough tackling quality CM at least one winger and at least one forward.

I don't know enough about the younger players which is why I haven't commented on them. Some should be loaned out to get experience, although we need to be careful which teams we deal with (playing style, how much time they will get on the pitch etc.) Davis really needs to go out and get some shooting practice and confidence and ,unfortunately, we can't afford to keep a non scoring centre forward in the team if we want to progress.
A decent bid for Trez would change my mind on him (there's been gossip about interest from Turkey) We should get a profit on Anwar I reckon but a lot of the others we should just take what we can.
-
We have some advocating 30 stay which leaves little room for new recruits if it’s a 25 man squad.
AEG Samatta Elmo Lansbury Taylor Hourihane Nyland should go to make room for new recruits, 4 of which need to be first team starters.
-
We shouldn't loan out Davis unless we get another forward in, as Wesley isnt fit yet.
And if Wesley was fit I'd be tempted to cut the loses and get rid. For a forward who couldnt head it's poor beyond belief. It might be a confidence issue.
While there are players who we need to get shot off, we need to be careful of a cut-price cull.

It was well documented when we bought him he couldn't head a ball. Stop lumping the ball up to him might go a long way to improve his contribution. Some decent service would be even better.

Which shows up:
A panic buy
Didnt excel in his other skills (which are????) Can't shoot....
Couldn't learn, or be trained to head it.
Davies can do all of these, other than frigging score ;D
So thats why I'd cut my loses. Christ, its better to put AEG as a central forward, who at least has pace and gets into the box

He had one of the assist kings in the league playing directly behind him.
With Wes it's all about movement for me. The amount of time we'd get a decent cross in and he'd be lumbering around on the edge of the box for some reason was incredible. Like Davis I just don't think at this point he has the nous of the runs a forward has to make at times so I'd rather we got in a forward who does.
Samatta in his early games did but no idea what sort of schedule he had during lockdown as he's looked way of it since restart.

We have some advocating 30 stay which leaves little room for new recruits if it’s a 25 man squad.
AEG Samatta Elmo Lansbury Taylor Hourihane Nyland should go to make room for new recruits, 4 of which need to be first team starters.
Its surely worth keeping Hourihane. I've a bit of a blind spot for AEG as think there is a fine player in there somewhere. Samatta was dreadful post restart so might be worth another look post a decent pre season. Though if we got a new starting forward in he might leave on loan or else Davis will have to.
Nyland, Taylor, Engels, Lansbury, Jota can all and will go I'd say, either permanently or on loan. I wouldn't be concerned if Elmo, Nakamba and Trez left either. Leaving a RCB/RB, LB, Winger, 1 or 2 CM and a forward to come in....and that's if Jack stays.
We got 35 points from 38 games, I do think we need a lot of improvement squad wise to avoid a repeat next season. Some of the above struggled to make an impact for us in the championship so should be nowhere near a premier league bench.

This is an opportunity to push on now we have avoided relegation by the narrowest of margins. I don't accept the Covid issue has any bearing on our ability to grasp this chance given it seems FFP will be relaxed/ditched. That is the same for every other club in the Premier League including the newly promoted clubs. What makes it an unlevel playing field is how much our very wealthy owners can invest at this point compared with what may usually take two or three transfer windows.

This is the chance now is the time

FFP hasn't been cancelled, clubs will just be looked at over a two year period. The restrictions will still be very real and unfortunately we can't shop like a kid in a sweet shop with a tenner.
