Title: West Ham United v Aston Villa Pre Match Thread.
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on July 23, 2020, 10:56:17 AM
Sunday 26th July.  Kick off is 4pm.  The game is live on BT Sport.

I can’t add a poll.

It’s 10.56am on Thursday over three days before this game starts.  And I’m already feeling physically sick.  I’m going for 1-1.  But enough to survive.

A big day. I’m going to drink beer and listen in the radio. Missus is going out. Think a nervy 0-1 and safety

Feeling sick already too.

Oddly, I'm more concerned about Bournemouth than Watford. I feel they will have an impact on events somehow during the course of the afternoon regarding the goal difference. Just hope we get the result to put them out of the picture altogether and to be safe.

Nervy 1-1 draw. Keinan to break his duck.

Not sure if I will watch this and may escape to the golf course where no doubt the mere thought of this will ruin my game. I’m sure I lost weight vs Arsenal - nothing that a post match pie didn’t fix mind you.

I think we will do it. I don’t know if we will win but we will just about do enough to stay up. But fuck it I’ll say 2-0 Villa. Jack and Doug.

I'm hoping that they have a sense of relief that they are already safe and just feel like they are on holiday and not give a shit.

The fact this is behind closed doors is a good thing, it means that there are no nerves from the terraces being passed on to the players. We're doing ok at the moment so let's hope that carries on. Being 4-0 up at half time would be good, it would Protect the NHS with less heart attacks to deal with.

I was daydreaming ideal outcomes a few weeks back, when we we're in much worse position, an I saw an early goal from a set piece and then Kienan running through a scoring with a few minutes to go.

I realise the latter part is stretching reality at present, but it would be a bloody good time to get his first top flight goal so I'm sticking with that.

I also think last nights result will help massively, what ever form they're in they've now reached their goal which looked doubt not so long back, so however professional and motivated they are there's not going to be the same edge to them mentally, they're no longer fighting for survival.

Nervy draw - hopefully that is enough. We'll get tested in the air - hopefully enough experience of last years final will give us enough to perform and not freeze.

Effectively our 3rd play off final in 3 years.
This one feels much, much more nerve wracking though.

I suppose it’s because we have so much to lose rather so much to gain.

I’m going for a very, very nervy 2-1 win for us with Samatta on the scoresheet.

Hopefully their players will be thinking of their holidays and job done

Gutted that but for a couple of minutes at Everton we would be home and dry

I'm sure we can raise it one more time as it would be galling after 7 / 9 points to chuck it now

At some point during the match I’m almost certain that the ‘as it stands’ league table will have us in the bottom 3, probably due to an early Watford goal; Cue absolute panic stations. However it will turn out ok.

Arsenal 3-1 Watford
Everton 1-1 Bournemouth
West Ham 1-1 Villa

These lot think they're a massive club, on a level with Man Utd or Liverpool, and deserve to be one of the top teams year in year out regardless.

The reality is they're a **** house team with one decent player.

I hope we turn up and spank them. They've only got one goal a game in them. Score early and we can sit back and counter. Score a second and they might well crumble.

If our defence keeps Antonio quiet, we stand a chance. Do the dynamic press and closing-down that we did against the Arse, and we will grind them down. Trez, JG and Luiz in particular were massively energised on Tuesday, and we need that level of intensity again.
Like us, Wet Spam have finally risen to the occasion and represent a real threat to us. I do think we are a half-decent Cup side, and this will serve us well.

No idea what the score will be .... and it's about other teams as much as us. I worry most about Everton's focus and interest in their game.

I don't feel especially positive - so my gut feeling is that we will fail, as we have done over and over and over when things have been in our own hand - don't think we are strong enough mentally. Queue some typical mindfarts and refereeing scandals and us losing. Then it is all dependent on the other two

West Ham have done well in recent seasons convincing media outlets they're somehow a 'massive' club now.

You hear Moyes and Noble come out with that sort of shite the whole time. For as long as I can remember, when they weren't scraping around in Division 2, they were at the arse end of the top division. (usually with gates on a par with Southampton and Cov).

And surprise surprise they're there again this season.

Even with the nucleus of a decent squad this year they're still pish.  It's the West 'aaam way.

The irony of them going on about how we never fail to mention we won the European Cup even though it was 38 years ago yet think it's fine to keep reminding the world they won the World Cup 54 years ago. I feel sorry for them having their current owners but really, they're just the West Brom of London - without the history, obviously.

I'm glad they've stayed up and admire their recent form. It will be a tough game, no doubt and a difficult one to predict other than we'll be fighting for our lives plus we have a few players that are coming into form. Should be a cracking game.

1-2 Villa

Think Antonio will give our improved defence some bother. It's really vital we don't concede an early goal as it will be panic stations then. We've only conceded 12 goals before 30th minute this season and only actually conceded in one first half since restart (Man. United) so it's something we're actually good at.

0-0 at half time and take things from there. Think we've got a goal in us so 1-1 which I believe will be enough.

We have control of our destiny which seemed so unlikely at 7 points adrift only 3 games ago.

But this is Villa and Villa don't do easy. I think West Ham will be really tough and think we might lose narrowly...

But.. But... Watford lose comfortably at Arsenal and Bournemouth draw so all is well and we stay safe.

Then a few drinks to seal the deal...

I think this will be a very tough game - Spam are playing very well, Antonio looks like the real deal, and while they are now safe, I don't see them taking it easy.

The good news is that I don't see Watford beating Arsenal - I think they are a mess and even if Arsenal don't turn up, I think a draw is the best they can hope for.

Bournemouth are the danger. To some extent they have less to lose given they don't have the big club tag and simply must win to give themselves any chance - they can afford to really give it a go and I think they have a good chance of beating Everton, even though the latter beat SU last night.

Sunday will be unbearable - lost of twists and turns I'm sure during the 90 mins - we are in the drivers seat but its marginal and if we dont show up with the right attitude and desire, then it can easily slip through our grasp.

As Dean said, its our cup final and thats got to be the attitude come kick off. No prisoners, lay absolutely everything on the line, play with passion and pride, and what will be will be. If they do that and it doesnt work out, I can live with it.

Based on historical Premier League finishes, the chances of staying up on our current tally are remote.

Only Olbiyun in 2004/05 stayed up with 34 points.  It doesn't improve a whole pile on 35 points either, with only Hull managing it with that figure in 2008/09 and West Ham in 2009/10.

It really depends what you're looking at, the points scored by 17th or the points needed to be 1 above safety.

The latter is more accurate:
18/19 - 35
17/18 - 34
16/17 - 35
15/16 - 38
14/15 - 36
13/14 - 34
12/13 - 37
11/12 - 37
10/11 - 40
09/10 - 31

So 34 would've been enough in 3 of the last 10 and 35 would've been enough half of the time. That pattern doesn't change much if you go back for all the seasons with 20 teams. It holds true for other leagues as well, 35-36 is generally the average.

Gotta be aiming to win this. If they can manage to keep the shape like they did with Arsenal and defend as a team it gives us a real chance. We’ll get a couple of decent opportunities and hopefully stick at least one away. The main thing for me is if we do go a goal down don’t start flapping. I’m going 2-1 Villa.

I think Villa have shown enough form of late to get a result whilst: not being particularly outstanding, a draw when getting the better of a team, then a win against possibly a distracted yet strong opposition on paper. The more recent form doesn’t lie, now they’ve just got to have bottle.

Certainly not cocky but confident, yes. I’m not betting against us staying up.

Wet Spam haven't drew consecutive matches since last February, and the last time both of our league games ended in a draw was 20 years ago. This game screams "all or nothing" to me.

We coughed up a few set pieces against a below par Arsenal (nine corners and a few free kicks in and around the final third) the other night. Impressive for them that they still didn't manage a shot on goal even with that.

We concede that many against West Ham and they will have shots on goal. In the few Wham games I've seen since the restart they clearly work on it and it's a fruitful source of chances for them.

They also bullied Yanited off the ball at times on Wednesday.  OK, Yanited aren't what they were, but you don't often see teams do that at OT.

Keep it tight the first 30 minutes or so (or ideally an early goal for us) and we'll be reet, McGrath willing.

Don't fancy us if we go behind and have to chase the game.

This will be the most challenging match, tactically, this season for Dean. Put yourself in his shoes. Does he keep it really tight, due to our slender better goal difference or “go for it” to try to get an early goal. I’ve no doubt at all that he will have someone watching the Watford and Bournemouth matches, to keep him up to date with, not only for the scores but, also with the way those teams are playing.
The team shape in our last game was about as good as I have seen all season so, that would be a good start. Also, a thankless task for our lone striker but, they they really need to run their hearts out even if it’s just for 45 minutes each for Samatta and Davis. I’m sure we all would love it if, come the end of the game to give each of our players 10 out of 10 for their performances.
Let’s all, team and us fans have a really positive mental attitude and, If so, I’m sure we will be celebrating come the end of the game. UTV!!

Consistent pressure has to be the way to go. Like a strongman pulling a train or a plane, focused and determined, and always mindful that we have to keep going all the way to the line. If we let up for even a moment, it could mean curtains. And don't give away corners.

A repeat of the last game, I think. 1-0, much soiling of underwear and clutching of left arms, but it'll do. Jack with our goal, the cherry on a performance that sticks another zero on his value.

We're going to have to watch Antonio very carefully.  At the age of 30 and a career that has mostly amounted to the square root of fuck all, he's now decided this is the time to turn into Ronaldo and has got 8 goals in his last 6 games.

I dreamt last night that we were 1-0 up after three minutes,  2-0 up after 5 minutes and we eventually won 8-0.

Lucas Moura was our first goalscorer though, so probably don't put any money on it.

Too late, I've gone for a double of Villa to win eight-nil, Arsenal to be leading at half-time but lose eleven-one.

It's going to be torture, I'm not sure how much I'll be able to watch. Once the euphoria of Tuesday dissipated, I've been feeling a bit sick following the realisation that relegation will feel all the worse for the hope we've generated. Holding on at Everton wouldn't half had helped too.

West Ham have good players who have had a bad season. Now they are in form, you can see they have quality throughout the team and they are also strong in areas we aren't, such as pace and strength. I think Soucek has made a big difference for them and Rice has come back into form alongside him. They are a sturdy pair of big bastards in the middle and McGinn and Hourihane will need to be right on it. West Ham are also unbeaten in 9 against the bottom 5 apparently, which has made me feel no better.

The various permutations are driving me a bit mad too. Let's say we're 2-0 down (please no) with ten minutes left, which Watford are 1-0 down and Bournemouth are drawing at Everton. In that scenario, a single goal from any of West Ham, Watford or Bournemouth would send us down. So, what does the team do? Dig in, 'protect' our goal difference and hope the others don't score? Go all out for a goal or even better two to secure our own fate? It could be a right pain.

That's why I understand the point earlier about it being easier for Bournemouth in terms of their approach, because they know they have to win by any scoreline and that's it.

So, if we could be 3-0 up by half time, that would be awesome. In reality, I think we're best of keeping it compact in the first time and making sure we go in at least level and try to nick one second half. Think the draw is the most likely enough and hopefully it will be enough!

We have Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek in our midfield

United looked a bit tired after the Cup games. Very flat and West Ham dominated a lot of the second half from what I saw, not sure why OGS wasn't running his bench but anyway. They had some kid right back who kept Rashford quiet but think he might find the going a lot tougher against Grealish. Cresswell limped off at left back so lets hope he is out too. They thoroughly dominated midfield so that's where our trio need to be well up for it. Bowen looks a fine addition but it's an average enough team let's be honest with nothing to play for.

Hourihane will retain his place and that gives us set piece options. McGinn showed definite signs of improvement so hoping he can get in behind Rice and Noble who both lack pace. Will need Grealish at his best but their right flank is definitely vulnerable so I expect most of our good play will come down that side. I think we will do it, 2-1.

                            Reina

Guilbert     Konsa            Mings      Targett

                            Luiz

Trez.         Grealish     Hourihane    McGinn

                            Samatta

Antonio had scored twice before lockdown. He's in good form but it will end soon enough, hopefully Sunday, if he plays.

With the short off season it will be interesting if clubs that have nothing to play for rest any players Sunday, basically giving them an extra week's break.

Soucek needs to be watched from set pieces and corners.Antonio is ok form but 4 goals against a god awful Norwich has bumped his stats up somewhat.

Motivation for them is zero ,unlike Arsenal they can't move up in the league ( extra League place for Arsenal is worth 5.4mil) and they have done what was needed.Worh any luck we are good enough on the day anyway but if they could perform how we did under Sherwood when we were safe ..utterly hopeless that would be nice .

Assuming we win, they need to win 3-0 to overtake us.  Our GD is 1 better than Watford, so if we win 1-0 say, it's 2 better.  If they then won 2-0, we'd stay up on goals scored.

Agreed, it would be the final straw for my half-wrecked heart if it all came down to the last few minutes.

Survival by hook or by crook, of course, but I'd rather we had it more or less in the bag by the 60 minute mark, based on all results. Probably too much to ask/hope for.

I live in Sutton so seriously considering walking along the canal joining it at the Tyburn House at about 4ish and walking to Villa Park. Perhaps just sit outside a bit and take in the beauty of the place before looking at the scores at 5:50pm and hopefully be in the right place for a solo celebration. Might even take my flag and adorn it on the claret and blue gates outside the Trinity Road. Either way, I can’t possibly watch it, I’ll be physically sick .

Throw in a sending off or two for Watford and Bournemouth and we are getting somewhere.

The way I look at it: If we take a point, we have no problem with Bournemouth any more regardless of what they do and we have no problem with Watford unless they beat Arsenal. Obviously take three points and it's very unlikely Watford win by 3 clear goals at Arsenal.

A West Ham fan going on entitlement about us does make me smile.

In the last 30 years we've finished in the top 6 on ten occasions. And in the top 10 on a further 7 occasions.

West Ham since the early 80s have finished in the top 6 twice.

Guess he lost interest after we went down, it happens.

I don't mind rival fans posting on here at all but it only takes a few comments about their teams and they get ultra defensive or abusive. Can remember that mass invasion of Stoke fans on here, they were all right at first and then when a few pointed out the grating Pulis style of play they all flounced off.

I think I read somewhere in the week that BT only do month passes which are quite expensive if you’re only watching a one off game.
My thoughts are that, as it’s the last matches in a very strange season, they should have been FTA but, that’s what greed does to these broadcasters. Never do anything much for the fans of football.

Yeah bt only do monthly passes for £25. Although you can get it as an add on with EE for less and I think for 15 ish you can get an option that allows you to watch on a proper telly on the app.

Annoyingly I bought a month for these recent games and it ran out yesterday.

That all too often used phrase about hope is right. 2 weeks back when we were 7 adrift I’d accepted we were down, made peace with it and convinced myself that in the Championship next season we’d be fine, in a way better position than last time we went down.

Now we’ve got a couple of results and suddenly all that tension and apprehension is back. I was over this once. Now I might have to do it again.

The worst I’ve ever felt watching villa was the Fulham play off, last year I was ok until derby scored then I felt bloody awful and was anticipating a villa style capitulation. This is the worst I’ve ever felt pre-match. This football mullarkey really is a drug isn’t it? I also feel guilty that this bloody match is so all consuming, there are people I know dealing with awful real life problems at the moment and I’m losing sleep over bloody football.

Last season I felt deep down that given our momentum at the time we were destined to beat Derby. This year there are too many other factors to consider which is why I am currently more nervous now than I was last year (apart from after Derby scored). I said I was not going to let it get to me and I was done with it all a couple of months ago. How wrong was I!?

Our game lasts minute longer, West Ham score, but VAR chalks it off, as the FT whistle goes news involving Watford who are 0-0.
Deeney scores, it's all over, but wait, VAR. Deeney is possibly a goofy tooth offside, it's hard to tell. After 3 mins VAR says offside.

Think that's the reason I'm not as nervous as before last year's play off final. Will probably change as 4pm approaches but I've said consistantly I don't really care what division we're in next year if a good chunk of it will be played BCD or infront of limited capacities (so I'll struggle to get a ticket).

Hard to get worked up about things if you can't go and get involved.

Of course it's important for our future we stay up but think next year will be another struggle unless we sign really really well. And I think we'll come straight back up if the worst happens.

Game starts at 11pm here in West Aussie.
I'm not sure what to do. I may try get some sleep and hopefully wake up when it's all over.
Look at Watford and Bournemouth's results and then hopefully watch a replay of our game.
Definitely no alcohol.
I was so nervous before the play off final with Derby last year I drank three quarters of a bottle of scotch and woke up the wife when it was all over.
Consequently in the dog house for the next couple of days.
I think we will draw with WHU and Bournemouth and Watford will lose.
Happy days ahead.
UTV
1 am in Brisbane. My initial plan was get pissed and just check the score tomorrow. But the cricket’s on too, so rain-permitting, I may watch that and then power through for the Villa match (and pay a heavy price tomorrow, but wfh, soooo......)

Can remember that mass invasion of Stoke fans on here, they were all right at first and then when a few pointed out the grating Pulis style of play they all flounced off.
That Bunny guy seemed pretty friendly at first, but then seemed to be more blues-hating than pro-Villa (as I recall, I might be wrong) I think they got a touch up at the Sty from memory.

Think we’d have had a few dotted around the ground as well.

Yeah bt only do monthly passes for £25. Although you can get it as an add on with EE for less and I think for 15 ish you can get an option that allows you to watch on a proper telly on the app.

Annoyingly I bought a month for these recent games and it ran out yesterday.

Did you get it for the Newcastle game?
my Optus plan seems pretty good value in Aus. Similar rate to Telstra, but you get all the premier league games on demand/ live.

ManCity gave Watford the same sort if beating they'd give most teams.
Watford wont be as bad again against Arsenal and they will be at them
But Watford have a couple of injuries and Arsenal wont roll over (as neither will WHam) and will have a response after their loss.

None of this makes me feel much better!  ::)

Woke up hungover with nervous energy, have already had to sit through near heart attack game watching my Essendon side stumble across the line to beat a godawful Adelaide team by 3 points in the AFL. This either has me battle hardened or due for a massive heart attack post 1am.

For the past few days I've felt confident, I've even had a Liverpool supporting mate get right behind Villa after they won the title just to sustain his interest in the season. He has successfully predicted that we would stay up, nearly every result he predicted he has gotten right since Palace in the relegation battle. Uncanny. The nerves have kicked in, what buoyed me and really actually got me excited a few days ago anticipating this fixture was repeatedly watching this, look at the steely conviction in the man's eyes, the steadfast words.

It's enough to convince me that we'll be fine.

Loved RS. I remember working in a photography shop in Solihull in the late eighties and he came in with his wife. I didn't recognise him at first, until he spoke then straight away the penny dropped. I just remember being pretty speechless, and suddenly losing the ability to string a sentence together. :-[

Main men for West Ham Antonio, in the form of his life, Rice and Soucek the Czech international is a player, I've been impressed with, but if we play like we did against Arsenal reckon we can do it, just the one blow not having Elmo available.

Still even more nervous now, than I was for the play off final.

I think we will lose today - going 2-1 to Spam. I think they have clicked, and while might be a little more relaxed than normal given they are on the beach, suspect there is a few nervous errors in us. Samatta nor Davis look capable of scoring, and so the goal will come from one of our midfield players.

But I think we survive on GD - Watford will be beaten easily I reckon by Arsenal, and I think Everton beat or draw against the south coast PL imposters!

Switching off now - can't bear to go through the agony real time - back on after 1pm EST to celebrate or drown my sorrows!

I've been a long time reader of this site, but today I finally registered. Seeing that video of the great Ron Saunders had me reminiscing. Supported Villa from the mid 70's, my late dad was a Villa fan, so I became one too. First game I went to was in the 78/79 season, vs QPR (we won either 3-1 or 3-2). I got all the players autographs, Cowans, Mortimer, Little, Rimmer, Gidman et al with the exception of Andy Gray ("Not signing autographs tonight lads" as he sped off in his Escort RS2000). Even Ron Saunders signed my brand new autograph book. Still have the book. I manage to get to 5 or 6 games a year, never sat in the Holte because a) I always think that's for the fans who go to every game and b) there is nothing like hearing the Holte roar when you sit by the halfway line. Seen us win the league, the league cup, the European cup (not there, just on the telly), get relegated, get promoted, be good and be rubbish. After all that time I should be relaxed about today in a whatever will be, will be, way. But no, I'm sat here, sweaty palms, sphincter twitching like a rabbits nose, hoping the hundreds of permutations go our way and we stay up. Happy ending to the weekend please Villa.

I really hope so. Smith saying we'll go all out for the win does worry me slightly. I know it's the cliched thing all managers say in these circumstances, but if it's 0-0 with 10 minutes to go and Watford aren't winning but Bournemouth are, I really hope we don't go gung-ho looking for the winner.

I just hope Villa like playing the Hammers at Stratford more than they used to at Upton Park. I must've seen us play there 5 or 6 times in the 80's and 90's and the best I ever saw us get was a draw, even when we had a better team than them, which was usually the case.

Maybe because of that I'm not feeling too optimistic about today, but I hope I'm wrong as I can't think of many worse clubs to get relegated by than fckng West Ham.

We've our own version of going all out for the win. It's what we've deployed in the last three games. It'll start with making pretty damn sure we don't need to score many more than one to get the win, and be focused on manoeuvring Hourihane into positions around their box. It won't involve going 3-2-5 from the off.

A few games ago I stated that I was at peace with the prospect of relegation. Not the event itself but the future given our ownership, squad (even with the inevitable sales of some top players) and the competition we would face next season trying to get back up. To an extent that's all still true. But this club we all love has done it again. Like making that long putt to finish a really bad round of golf, after you said fuck this I'm never playing again, it's sucked us all back in. Raised our hopes. 7 points from 9 after a season of misery puts us on the verge of accomplishing what most of us thought was impossible after Man U beat us. Now, it will be hugely disappointing if we cannot finish it off after the hard work to get here. But it's Villa, and as much as they are capable of a swift kick in the bollocks, they are capable of precisely the opposite, like a soft unexpected caress across the shoulder by the girl you have always longed for, causing a stir of emotion that things after all might just be fine. Let's do this Villa.

I think we will draw, Watford will get hammered (heard comments made by Ben Foster and their team morale is in the pits) and Bournemouth will also draw.We are fortunate West Ham have nothing to play for so they will be much less focused than in recent weeks. But they are still a confident team with lots of talent and won't want to lose so I can see a draw.

Became very panicky before, I've slept through most of the restart games as I often have work commitments and can't stay up and tbh it just didn't seem worth it. Girlfriend actually gave me a val before going to bed, she saw the state of me pacing the room, doing stretches. The tablet feels like cheating really, I've put it aside.

Been drunk three nights out of the previous four, want to give it a break. Watched those three youtube links and it occurred to me, stay up or down Villa will still be here, kinda rationalised it all for me really. No interest in anything football, fuck the potential outcomes, what anyone else is doing or West Ham, just the 90 minutes. This may well be the last time we see someone like the great Jack in a Villa shirt, savour that.

Three Fall records on the trot, some Mark E.Smith snark. Fuck em, I'm ready.

The scenarios Watford need though are far more unlikely than ours.  If we win, they have to beat Arsenal 3-0  If they lose 1-0, we have to lose 3-0.  Win and we're there, almost certainly.  If they lose, we have to get battered.
