This is players you've watched only and you can include them for whatever reason. i.e. they were just the best, most exciting, biggest character, whatever.
Bosnich - He just made saves that seemed impossible.
Price - He's got no hair, but we' don't care.....
Evans - When I first starting loving and playing football, he was the one at the back that I loved.
McGrath - No explanation necessary.
Wright - Beats Staunton because, well I never really liked him.
Daley - Infuriating to watch at times, but I loved him
Merson - Cheeky.
Platt - I loved that period when he was just flying about scoring goals.
Sid - My first.
Withe - He scored that goal (and didn't let Chico down in the Asda Car Park.
Yorke - Excitement and goals galore
Subs:
Spink - Solid
Ehiogu - Was always a fan
Laursen - Brilliant
Grealish - Not quite in the 1st team, yet.
Atkinson - I felt he should be in
Merson - Made me smile
Shaw - The best natural talent whose career was cut-short, feels wrong that he's not in the XI, will feel disappointed as he's done nothing wrong.

It's funny, I only started following football and Villa in 1978, when I was 6. I remember certain players from the League and European Cup winning era; Evans, Rimmer, Mortimer, Morley, Cowans, Shaw and Withe, but the other players never really stuck in my mind or made an impression. I guess because they didn't have the glamour that kids playing on the park like...
-
Bosnich
Swain, McGrath, Evans, Staunton
Mortimer, Cowans, Platt, Morley
Withe, Shaw
Subs - Friedel, Barrett (could cover full back and centre half), Richardson (massively underrated in my opinion),
Townsend, Yorke.
-
Bosnich
Staunton Teale McGrath Barrett
Platt Grealish Richardson (Kevin), Young (Ashley)
Yorke Saunders
Subs
Spink I. Taylor Mellberg Hourihane Parker Milosevic
Picked favourites. I am sure there were more prolific strikers than Savo or Deano but i loved those guys.
-
Somehow I need to accommodate Alex Cropley for his part in 76/77 and creating the template for Gordon Cowans,
-
I still think our 90s teams were better than the MON teams. I also, controversially, leave Grealish on the bench because the players I have picked played full seasons for us in the top flight:
a 5-3-2, classic villa formation:
------------------------------Bosnich---------------------------
------------------Laursen----McGrath----Ehiogu--------------
------Charles-----------------------------------------Staunton---
-------------------Milner-----Merson-----Barry-------------------
------------------------ -Yorke----Benteke----------------------
Subs:
Friedel, Mellberg, Taylor, Townsend, A. Young, Grealish, Atkinson.
This was tougher than I thought it would be! Very harsh on Petrov, Saunders and Carew and I was certain that I would have got Taylor into my first eleven. If I had gone 4-4-2 I probably would have got Petrov into the team with Milner right and Barry left.

I really struggled and could probably pick 2 sides to be honest.

Two cups and two runners up spots - they definitely were. We would have had three gos at the Champions League by finishing 2nd 2nd and 4th.

M. Ron Saunders.
Now on first inspection this might seem to leave us a little light at the back, but I've picked a keeper who could save literally anything, the most exciting defender the planet has ever seen, and Paul McGrath. Playing behind a midfield of craft and graft. And good luck to any opposition that thinks they can come back from being at least 4 down inside 15 minutes.

I really struggled and could probably pick 2 sides to be honest.
Or 3. Somehow I feel disloyal leaving certain players out - e.g. my 13 year-old self is desperately trying to put up some sort of argument on behalf of Alan Deakin and Tony Hateley, but my 67 year-old is tutting "get real".

This 67 year old is still working on his team but will have to find room for Peter McParland and Gerry Hitchens could well be on the bench along with Slogger/Tulip.

I know Tulip is Sleeuwenhoek, but who is Slogger?
-
Slogger is also John Sleeuwenhoek.
Edit: A quick search and it brings up this old thread about him which is a good read https://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php?topic=48050.0

Ah, cheers. Will have a look.

Posted this on another thread without realising this one was here ...
1. Nigel Spink
2. Chris Price
3. Steve Staunton
4. Olof Mellberg
5. Paul McGrath
6. Ian Taylor
7. Tony Daley
8. David Platt

11. Dwight Yorke
Subs:

Have a no-current-players rule with these, but Grealish is nailed on to replace someone at the moment. Possibly Mings & SJM.

Picked Carew over Benteke for this as i think he's do better in a more isolated situation. Generally though Carew the better player on his day but Benteke more consistant. Again Grealish could play either left side or in behind.

Based on my favourites rather than ability but still a decent team in a 4 2 3 1 formation.

Since mid 80's:
Bosnich
Barrett McGrath Laursen Staunton
Cowans Townsend
Daley Platt Merson
Yorke
Toughest choices were:
Bosnich over Spink or Friedel
Laursen over Southgate, Ugo or Mellberg
Townsend over Barry
Merson over Young or Grealish
Yorkie was special so not too hard a choice, but special mentions to McInally, Dublin, Carew and Benteke for that spot.

Since 1978 - classic 4-3-1-2 which we have hardly ever played.
1) Bosnich - impossible saves at his best as good as anyone on the planet (beats Spink)
2) Swain - can't remember Gidman much at Villa
3) Staunton - just a cut above one or two others (Bouma/Gibson)
4) Evans - longevity and consistency (nudges Southgate, Olaf and Ugo out)
5) McGrath - simply the..
6) Mortimer
7) Sid
11) Barry
10) Platt
8) Little
9) Yorke

Welcome. I like that front three, reckon Jack and Yorke would've worked really well together.
-
Thanks. Yes, Yorke at Villa was often so able to find his position in front of goal when the cross was coming - as i remember it in front of the TV those days. Would have thrived on Grealish delivering. Watkins might have this positional sense too - as it seems. Exciting times.
-
Surprised McGrath isn't in your line-up? And surely there are 3 or 4 contenders for right back ahead of a guy who hasn't yet kicked a ball??
-
Yes, about Mc Grath its probaly partly because when he was playing it was a period I didnt follow that much and also we where here only able to see a Villa game on telly like once or twice a year in those times when one (non-profitt) national tv channel was what we had. Also probably I guess I remeber Scandis in the team better being one myself. About Cash you have right of course.
-
Manager: Graham Taylor - when you see the team below you’ll know why!
Bosnich (best shot stopper in the world for a while)
Delaney (just edged out Barrett and Price)
Staunton
McGrath
Laursen (centre half definitely strongest position in my era)
Cowans
Platt
Milner (centre mid version)
Yorke
Young (just edged Grealish)
