Craven Cottage, 4th Jan, 15.01 KO.

A weakened team and 3-1 them.
-
FIFA predicts 1-0 Villa with a last minute of stoppage time winner from Jack after a pretty dire game.
-
I know it's sacrilege to some, but with our injury situation and the amount of games racked up recently I wouldn't be playing any of our key players in this game. I love the FA cup, but this year would be happy to give it a miss.

That will be pretty easy then we’ve only really got 2 key players (Mings&Jack)
the rest are a bit of a muchness
-
4-1 us, our new centre-forward emulating his dad's first Villa hero's debut, that force of nature that was Simon Stainrod*.
Stick with the/a three at the back, pick a decent team, make sure we win. Glory awaits.
*this will also be where the similarity ends. But in a good way.
-

Why did I read that as 'emule'-ating?
-
Our record at Turf Moor, Craven Cottage and away league cup semi finals is awful. We've ticked one off this week and the other two will tumble as well. 2-0 Villa. Kodj and Chester.
-
3-1 us.

You've either got some unshakable opinions on our mid-80s superstar, or you really miss Heskey. Possibly both.
-
15.01 KO.
Second time I've seen this, so probably not a typo. Why are we kicking off 1 minute late?

Indeed. As Johnny Logan once sang "What's Another Year?".

1 minutes mindfulness I think.

Play the U23s.
I wish I was going to this, it would be great to enjoy a normal game of football without VAR.
-
It would be nice to see at least a couple of the U23s get a place on the bench at least. You'd think Archer would be selected as Kodjia is our only recognised striker in one piece. Ramsey deserves a place aswell.
-
About time we won a game at the Cottage. 0-3

You are spot on. We need to prioritise league survival.

This. FA Cup or PL survival - its not even a debate and, we don't have the depth to consider anything else. Let some of the fringe players stake a claim (or not) to be included in the PL run in. They should have no greater momentum
-
It’s a shame the FA CUP is so devalued nowadays, third round day used to something to look forward to, this Fulham fan will be going Saturday, not sure what sort of team we’ll put out, pity sure we’ll rest most of the regular first teamers, plus a lot of our fringe players are injured, so I think the same as you probably be mainly U23’s and a few fringe players

1-1 with a fringe team.

Do they stop using VAR for the FACup matches, as well?
(I mean everywhere, not just at Fulham!
Asking for a friend who’s just put up a poll.)

Sorry, confused. How do I get to Putney Bridge without using a replacement bus? Stupid TfL site doesn't give you the option to avoid replacement bus.

Tube still running from Earls Court to Putney Bridge.
-
Cheers. TfL site is confusing (or possibly I'm just thick!).
So, from Euston. Victoria Line to Green Park. Then Piccadilly Line to Earl's Court, then District Line from EC to Putney Bridge and I'll be unaffected by any closures?
-

Nope it is confusing, showing as disruption but is running normally.
As for your thickness, I couldn’t possibly comment <winky thing>
-
I don’t think we’ll win, but in the grand scheme of things it won’t be a disaster. There are other priorities.
-
-
The best result is rest "best players", get no injuries and maybe try alternative formations.
Other than that, I dont mind if we progress or not
-
Looking at the youth maybe archer ir sea will get a start. But i think kodjia will play. Personally i wouldnt risk kodjia as we need him for cup. Give archer or sea a start.no pressure on them at all for a meaningless fa cup game
-
I personally wouldn't call it meaningless, but would definitely like to see some of the U23s involved.

Any of them in particular?

Archer and Ramsey.
-
Like many Villa fans the FA cup remains the holy grail, but in present circumstances we need to keep the first team wrapped in cotton wool and give the youth/fringe players a run out.

I’m sure they will do and it’s a must this year yet again

Try Euston to Vauxhall on Victoria line then South Western Railway from Vauxhall to Putney. Travelcards oyster and contactless all valid. Walk across Putney Bridge to ground.

See my post above. Stay on vic line to Vauxhall and change to main line to Putney. 10 min walk to ground across and along river. There are about 6 trains an hour from Vauxhall but there are some 15 minute gaps.
-
Think Smith might go back to 4-3-3 for this given the need to give some players a rest, give certain players minutes and lack of availability due to injury. Possibly something like; Nyland, Elmo, Chester, Engles, Taylor, Marv, Lansbury, Hourihane, El Ghazi, Jota, Kodjia. Imagine we are fairly likely to see some U23 forward players on the bench which will be nice.

Carabao cup and league have to take priority this really is a game we could do without.

Can understand that (and it may well happen) but we have just come off a run where some of those players have played five games in 18 days and we have some big fixtures coming up.
Also, my issue with Smith’s 4-3-3 was it being our only system despite not currently working for some of our players and against some opponents. I want us to be flexible so would have no issue with it still being used at times.
-

Yep. FA Cup is the one I want to win more than any other.
-

Same here. The FA Cup used to be an event in itself, not an unnecessary distraction from finishing 4th or 17th.
-
We should be able rest players and still beat the depleted team Fulham are sure to put out. Given the recent schedule plus important games to come it would be mad to risk further injuries.
-
I understand the priority nowadays is the premier league and that’s not going to change
I am still in the old fashioned camp of winning cups is actually better than survival although it’s never been a either or choice anyway
I don’t ever look back and remember the great days of premiership survival under Lambert and Mcliesh
but I do look back and remember fondly 96 +94 and even before that when we won the league cup few times
some of the best days of my life
I feel a bit sorry for younger supporters who will miss out because we all now worship at the alter of the premier league
unless we can do the business against Leicester which should now be our priority imo
-
Have we sold out tomorrow or can we pay on the day?

Completely agree with this and I think it’s sad but true that this is partly a generational thing. In my time supporting villa (early 80s) the mid 90s league cup wins will never be forgotten, outplaying one of the best Man Utd teams ever and destroying Leeds. Even though marred by the final, the semi final win over Liverpool a Great day to remember too.
In a few years time, other than Benteke I’ll struggle to even remember the villa teams that scraped to survival between 2011 and 2015 never mind the seasons themselves.
I used to get excited about semi final and final fa cup days even without villa in them.
I can see though how for anyone maybe under the age of 30 the importance of the fa cup isn’t there and the premier league is God, but it’s a shame. Wigan are in the relevant wilderness now but would there fans ever swap beating Man City in the cup final a few years ago.
Small victories, but I make sure my 9 year old watches the draw from the 3rd onwards whether we’re still in it or not.
Saying all of that, I don’t want us to go down or have my lad see his second relegation season by the age of 9, so whilst I would respect the cup by playing a strong team, I wouldn’t play Grealish tomorrow.
And stick to the 352
Nyland
Chester
Engels (if fit)
Hause
Elmo
Hourihane
Nakamba
Lansbury
Taylor
Jota (in the Jack role)
Davis if fit otherwise Kodja

Ta, both 👍🏿

Come on Villa boys, let's make progress in the cup this afternoon. I appreciate it won't be our 1st team out there (it won't be Fulhams either) and clearly we have injuries, but like the league cup let's see how far we can go. You just never know this could be our year and I'd love us to win this trophy at least once in my lifetime. UTV!

we won a trophy last season mate 😀
-
I'd go with Rambo's team, it's a good mix without weakening us too much. It might be a risk starting Kodjia seeing as he's the only striker fit so maybe giving one of the kiddy winks a go might be a good idea.
-
Most probably going to be JK.

Reports on social media that the M1 is closed southbound at Milton Keynes and is likely to be closed for a while. The M40 is a much better bet anyway.

Sorry, confused. How do I get to Putney Bridge without using a replacement bus? Stupid TfL site doesn't give you the option to avoid replacement bus.
If you're starting at Euston, either:
Northern Line southbound (Charing Cross branch) to Leicester Square. Change for the Piccadilly line westbound, and stay on to Hammersmith. The ground is a 15 minute walk – away end is the far side.
Northern Line southbound (Charing Cross branch) to Leicester Square. Change for the Piccadilly line westbound, stay on to Earls Court. Change at Earls Court for the District line westbound to Putney Bridge. The ground is a ten minute walk – away end is closest to you.
Walk out of Euston, turn right at the main road, and walk the couple of minutes to Euston Square station. Get the Circle line westbound to Edgware Road. Change there for the District line westbound which will take you to Putney Bridge. The ground is a ten minute walk – away end is closest to you.

Or, as we say in the rest of the country, it's only 15 minutes til the next one.
-
I hope we take this seriously because we are in the marker for players who might be able to add something in the latter rounds. We might not want to risk injuries right this minute, but the club has a month to do something about that and bring people in. Lots of all Premier Division ties, take advantage by not getting out in the third round please.

And not just the distance, but the slow-moving families walking in triple file so you can't overtake them.

Sorry to be pedantic I can only count 2 all PL ties not loads

Probably a bit late for this but you can get a bus from Euston Square to Putney, takes about 50 minutes.
-
Get overland train Waterloo Putney and walk it.
