This really needs to be a win.
-
Last night will help on Saturday. I would've been dreading it but a win, whoever it's against works wonders and I think we will see a positive atmosphere.
2-0
-
Villa being shit at Christmas is as traditional as turkey and hangovers.
Agonising 1-2 and everyone miserable over the festive period, as usual.
-
Us 4 Them 0
-
Can see this being a frustrating 90 minutes where we have a couple of big chances in a nervy game but have to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Yes but what about Matt Le Tissier sneaking one in?

Didn't that happen before or something similar....a Dean Richards (RIP) header giving Southampton a 1-0 win at a sparsely populated VP, circa 1999 just before Christmas? During one of Gregory's turgid phases if memory recalls.

Amazing to think that almost exactly a year earlier we ripped the same opposition apart at their place to go 12 games unbeaten and stay top of the league.
-
A mate of mine who's a saints ST holder reckons they have no chance of keeping a clean sheet.
This is just massive, so 2-1 us.
-
Had a look at Southampton's away results and they're not that bad which surprised me.
Two wins at brighton and Sheffield United although they were right at the start of the season. Since then they've narrowly lost at Man. City, should've won at Arsenal and messed up at Newcastle when they were the dominant team.
Don't think they'll be much in it given our mediocre form. 1-1. My gut feeling is Norwich game will suit our strengths better.
-
They can score but they can’t defend. I don’t think it will be enjoyable but I think we can win this, and we really need to.

Yeah they're weak at both ends. If Ings dosen't score no one else really does unless it's a game where we give Ward Prowse 3-4 chances to score a free kick from 25 yards out.
They do draw loads of games 1-1 or lose or win 2-1 so I suspect the scoreline won't be too far from any of those. Unless they sign half the Liverpool team from the other night on emergency loans.

That’s what I’d go with as well
I would swap Nakamba with Luiz, but that would be it. I wouldn't usually advocate Hourihane starting, but like the a Newcastle game, think these kind of matches at home are where we need his quality in the final third.
-
That team will leave Wesley isolated again it hasn't worked so far.

I’m always much happier when Hourihane is in the team. I’d maybe swap El Ghazi for Trez as well.
-
Must win for me. Glad grealish engels and mcginn were rested.
I would try two up top for this one and have mcginn in bench if this reported injury is true. Lets give them a real headache by having kodj and wes up front
-
Nervy 2-1 win.

I can remember this match vividly. We were absolutely terrible that day, really poor and I got told by a steward to calm down when I lost my rag at one point.
Not my finest hour but it hasn't happen since....the steward, I mean.
-
Fantasy festival of football! 1-0 Villa
-
They can score but they can’t defend.
Sounds familiar.

That game put my wife off football forever. She's never forgiven me for that couple of hours (fair play really, it was bloody awful).

I'd play with Kodjia and Wesley.

That is almost sounding like a Panini sticker album! ;D
Anyway, 2-1 Villa, we will get a goal either side of half time and then Ings will pop one in at 70min mark for the tradiational "nervy" finish
-
Just. Fookin. Win.
Don't care how or by how many.
-
Aston Villa 3-2 Southampton
McGinn 17 Ings 15
El Ghazi 59 Long 65
Wesley 90+6
-
Just. Fookin. Win.

I'd like a nice, straightforward 4-0 win please. 2 goals in each half, so I'm not on the verge of a nervous breakdown when it's 1-0 in the 93rd minute.
-
Stating the bloody obvious but this is massive isn’t it?
Losing, and dropping into the bottom 3 doesn’t bear thinking about. I’d fear for us psychologically if that happened.
I’ll go for a nervy 2-1 win (with my heart ruling my head slightly).
-
I think the part we play as supporters will be crucial in this one. Convey our nerves to the players and we're in trouble!
So hopefully we can make VP a cauldron of noise and drive them on to victory. Come on you Lions!
-
This is also massive for them, I watched the end of thier game last week and they actually looked better than we did at United.
This could get ugly.
-
As others have said, they're not terrible going forward, but they are shocking at the back.
We we keep things tight, I'd expect a win.
Which means we'll likely bottle it.
-

Yeh the keep things tight thing bothers me, how many clean sheets this season?
-
They are without that Djenpro bloke

Just two in the league.
-
I would bring Grealish back into the centre post-haste! Stick Jota in behind Wesley too. Truthfully, if we can just get our early-season midfield energy, we can do well.
I fully expect they will see this as winnable and I suppose it is for them.
3-1 Villa, Wesley, Grealish aaaaand Wesley again.
-
Nervy 2-1 win.
My thoughts exactly. Southampton are pretty poor but they have battled and restored some pride since they were thrashed by Leicester.
-
Villa to win 2-0.Grealish and Kodjia with the goals.
-
Another tough fought draw unfortunately I think. 2-2
Both sides are going to see this as must win, so we’ll both be going all out.
-
We need to win! 2-1
-
2-1 Villa.
-
1-1
-
We play two up front and we win this.
Play Wes on his own up front and we won’t win.
-
3-1. Wesley (2) and Grealish. Hause (og) for them.
Fuck the fuckers!
-
3-1 Villa. Once we get the first, confidence will grow, The lads will settle down and carry on to the win the match 3-1, this is the first of 3 much needed victories coming up,.......we have to!!.
-
This is massive isn't it?
-
Could be a season defining game. Head says 2-2, heart says 3-1.
-
3-0 home win. Merry Christmas to all
-
I'm not sure whether it's because we scored a few the other night but i fancy us for another good win today. I'd leave McGinn out if he's not properly fit and I'd start Kodjia although I think Smith will go with Wesley again. 4-1 to us.
-
Come on Villa boys, 3 points please! Let's make this the 1st win in a winning sequence of 3 games over Christmas. Their fans claim they lack physicality and leadership on the pitch and would take a draw. We need to dominate them and win! Tbf we have only lost 1 match to a team in the bottom half of the PL (Bournemouth, when we gifted them 2 goals), so our form against similar placed teams up to 10th has been good, averaging 2 points per game with 4 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss and 2 yet to play (Soton and Watford). Let's make this count and support the lads! UTV!
-
This is massive isn't it?
Aye. It's as massive as a really massive thing. Let's hope our lot can stick in a massive performance then!
-
Likely team gents?
Heaton, Guilbert, Engels, Hause, Targett, Luiz Nakamba, Hourihane, McGinn, Grealish, Kodjia

i would but I bet Smith sticks with Wes and SJM in midfield.

If he is then AEG will start on right surely.

He should have been rested at Man City and other hardly likely to win games in readiness for giving his all for games like today, Norwich and Watford.

I'd be surprised if SJM is rested today. This game should be made for him.
He was also on the pitch at half-time during the midweek game with Grealish pinging balls to each other. Just didn't strike me as someone about to be or wanting to be out of the firing line.
Here we go for a prediction. Mcginn to start and to score at least once (hides behind sofa with fingers firmly crossed).
-
Going 2-1 Villa, Wesley to get the winner!
-
All I want for Xmas is a Villa win.
Come Villa boys.
-
Selling/giving away if necc my lower Holte L6 if anybody can make it

How much rest does a young professional footballer need
I would have thought a week is long enough two weeks and your losing match fitness
best way of regaining form is to play your way back to form not sitting around with your feet up
I think this resting stuff when players have had whole weeks between games is one of the biggest myths in modern day football
-
Going 2-1 Villa, Wesley to get the winner!
Nurse!
-
Win by a couple or three, to stay on track for my prediction of when we've played everyone once, we'll be out of the bottom three and not have a negative goal difference.
-
The m6 north from star city was totally blocked due to a multi car pile up when we drove pest an hour or so ago.
Traffic backed up past the m42 junction.
If you’re about to go to the match in that direction, might want to check.

The wait to be served in The Barton’s has become more like the bars in the Upper Trinity.
