We are calling for Aston Villa Football Club to rename The North Stand ‘The Ron Saunders Stand’ in honour of the great man. Either as it is now or if redevelopment is going to happen.
Disclaimer: 'We' does not refer to H&V.
-
I'd personally go with The Saunders-Barton Stand.
-
I'd rather they rename the Witton Lane stand.
-
Done.

Signed

So would I, but that is not the point of this thread.

It’s all a bit “Wolves”.

How?

It’s all a bit “Wolves”.
Really ?

It’s all a bit “Wolves”.
How?
Naming stands after ex players/managers etc. I’d rather we call it the Witton End.
-
It’s his birthday today isn’t it? Happy birthday Ron.

I tend to agree. There are many Players and managers over the years deserving if you go down that route. Leave as they are.

Agreed - no naming stands after people (except Thomas Holte)
-
Revert to The Witton Lane Stand and then keep all four as they are. A statue would be a fitting tribute to a collosus of a man, placed at the foot of the Holte End steps.
-
He’s the only manager in my lifetime of supporting Villa to be around long enough to leave a legacy of winning more than one trophy and giving us seven brilliant seasons . Happy birthday Sir Ron - you always gave each and everyone of us 110% commitment. Other than winning the FA cup I don’t think anything would make me happier than singing your name for all my worth whilst you were being paraded on the pitch by your family in front of the stand named after you. Thanks too Legion for kicking off the petition 🙏🤞

Pardon?
-
Done. Saunders/Barton stand. Oh, and by the way, I don't give a shit about Wolves. This is about Villa.

Am I being greedy if I ask for a stand and a statue ? 🤔
-
Both.✅
-
I’d prefer a statue, that makes people stop and look and hopefully consider what this guy stood for. How many fans under the age of say 35 appreciate who Ron is and what he did for us?
The McGregor statue is fantastic and a focal point, Ron deserves the same.

What about John Trinity?

I would love to see a statue of Ron Saunders holding aloft the League Championship trophy and another one of Tony Barton holding aloft the European Cup. Whilst bearing in mind we need to leave space ready for when we need to build a statue of Dean Smith holding aloft the FA Cup.

Midfield dynamo, 1887
And tarmacked in the street lamp
-
Statue for me, pride of place in front of the new North Stand when it’s built. Our finest manager in the modern age.
-
Done
-
Statue stands get renamed
-
Statue stands get renamed
Certain statue stands get renamed.
Not a bad tongue-twister.

Sorry to disappoint anyone but I doubt it will be named after Ron.
I worked (while I was with AViDS) along with the Foundation in the planning and making of the sensory rooms (not trying to big up my part). I asked if they could be named "The Ron Saunders Sensory Suite" and I was told that after consideration it would be "too political". I was very disappointed, especially after the size of the donation AViDS gave towards the project.
I signed this yesterday on Facebook

Someone aged about 30ish said on twitter yesterday, that calling it the Ron Saunders stand would mean nothing to younger fans and would make it dated.
My lad is 14 and loves the part where he says "Do you want to bet against us" to that reporter. He knows.
I love the idea of the Saunders / Barton stand, but hey, that's just me!

Not me. Wayne Tench, I think. All I did was put the link up.

Neither stand nor statue, but Saunders Park instead of Bodymoor has a nice ring to it.
-
It’s all a bit “Wolves”.
And Man United, Liverpool, Celtic, Newcastle, Man City, Rangers and absolutely loads of teams other than sodding Wolves. What a bizarre thing to post, sounds like you're as obsessed with them as they are with us. That's before we even talk about clubs as big as Inter and Ajax having whole grounds named after players.
I'd be delighted to celebrate a glorious part of our history and have the stand named after Ron.

With a big sign saying "Always give 110% to Aston Villa. If you can't guarantee that just fuck off"
-

The Witton lane is the past name for Doug Ellis. The north stand was the Witton end

Rename the road along the back of the North Stand 'The Ron Saunders Way'. He'd like that.

Legion, could you add a poll to gauge the overall feelings please

Oh alright, keep your knickers on!

As the Villa have never named a stand after any of our heroes a statue would be a fitting tribute, but not while Ron is still with us.
-
I’d have no problem with names of stands or statues for Ron Saunders
On a personal level he’s the man who built a team that gave me the greatest times of my life
-
Sir Ron has a very dry sense of humour. Could we not put on the crossbar in front of the holte.....The Ron Saunders goal.k
-

Will do. Any suggestions as to options?

If a personal tribute is "too political" and/or you think a stand for both Sir Ron and Tony Barton is a bit long winded how about recognising what was a glorious team effort - may I suggest either "The Rotterdam Stand" or "The 1982 stand".

If Portuguese Ron can have a statue so can our Ron whilst still alive.

So long as theres a proviso that we automatically rename the stand next time we're European champions.

I will, but only because they're so comfy. Not because of you 😡

Ron Saunders Stand
Ron Saunders statue
Saunders and Barton Stand
Nothing required

Why should we follow the example of any of the tinpot outfits you mentioned? We have our St. Herbert stand. That's all we need.
-
That isn't going far enough for me. I'd petition the council to change the name of the road from Witton Lane to The Saint Doug of Bicycle Kick Super Highway.
-
We need to keep a stand free for 20 years time when Dean Smith has retired and left us with a Fergie-esc legacy
-
Apart from the good views, it's a shit, obsolete stand with no legroom which is woefully unqualified to bear the name 'Ron Saunders'.
-
I’d definitely name it after him when it’s re-developed, but I wouldn’t give him that horrible stand as it is now.
-
I'm not keen on the idea of naming stands after people. For a start you are limited to four stands, and so just four people. Of course, Ron Saunders is arguably one of the four most significant figures in the history of the club at this point in time, but why accept that will always be the case? Much better in my opinion to have suites, bars, lounges and statues named after people.
Naming stands after people interrupts the continuous lineage from them being banks of earth, as well as the ground being located in a specific place, with a particular relationship to its surroundings, rather than a spaceship that has just landed there. I would extend this to the North stand being called the North Stand rather than the Witton End also. Of course it exists at the north end of the ground, but that is not relevant to your experience of being there. It being at the Witton end of the ground is much more relevant and therefore natural.
I suppose I also have a problem with the act of naming stands, rather than them being known as what they have always been known as, and this being somewhat mysterious and shrouded in history. Essentially I don't need Villa Park to be a theme park, I need it to be a mythical place that goes down through the ages. If we were to relocate to another site, and had to invent the history to a certain extent, then the situation might be different.
-
A statue is long overdue in my opinion. As someone who was aged 15 when he arrived I can safely say that in my lifetime of support I have never seen another manager of our club that has come anywhere near to his achivements.
As for younger supporters being unaware of his stature , that simply reinforces the need for a statue.

Do you want to bet against this ?

What a post! Agree completely.

We could have an Andy Towns End.
I'll fetch my coat!
