I was hoping for Douglas Luiz and Nakamba... but Douglas hasn’t even made the bench today!

Oh well... at least Trezeguet is back!

I think that was the team to be expected.  Where on earth is Targett though, and possibly more importantly, Luiz?

Coming back from a hamstring injury takes a while.

Interestingly from being out of the premiership for 3 years I hardly recognise most of the arse team

Let’s hope for the best, and I hope I am wrong, but don’t think we are good enough to play 4-3-3. Personally 4-2-3-1, but what do I know!

Wonder what's up with Doug. Thought Targett might have made this one. Looking at their attacking options think I might watch from behind the settee. Come on Villa - make me eat my words

Arsenal are very suspect at the back. If there is a team where this actually might work it’s against them. The midfield however has to collectively work together to win and keep the ball and get up close with Wesley. Otherwise it’s going to be a long afternoon.

An even longer afternoon and evening for me as I now have to switch off all electronic devices, refuse any carrier pigeons and owls that ring the doorbell, wait for 7.45pm then watch the game on TV hoping they don't mention the score when presenting the game (I'm having €50 on the wankers on RMC Sports do this).

same formation i imagine-- the wingers need to earn their corn--cant see us scoring from corners nor free kicks---hope i,m wrong.

They will be suspect at the back all game against us. What we need to do is find a way to expose those weaknesses.

It’s only on here and Twitter where there has been a push for us to play 2 DMs.  Smith has never given any indication that he wants to change the way we play.  He has faith in his philosophy and it’s served him (and us) pretty well so far

Would have preferred an extra body in midfield as I think we can get at their midfield and over run them.

A shape, or personnel in a shape, isn't a philosophy. If he wants us to play on the front foot he might consider looking at being more physical and getting more aggressive at the transitions.

I think we're suspect down the left. El G and Taylor don't fill me with optimism. If we come away with a draw i'll be well happy. C'mon you Villa boys. Just noticed Wolves done what we should have if it wasn't for that fucking twat K.Friend. They equalised on 90+5.

There has never been any indication that he will change the formation.
He is a 4 3 3 Manager, we better get used to it.
I don’t see why he does not play Jack instead of one of the wingers though.

His stubbornness to change is my biggest concern. I love his philosophy of all out attack but when it's not giving points you have to question his decision. The old chestnut about first you have to win the midfield doesn't seem to register with Dean. I fear it's going to be a very long afternoon.

I'll be watching El Ghazi closely today. Until now all I've seen him do is pass the ball back to Taylor. It's like playing with 10 men. Obviously Dean sees something I don't.

It said in the preview on BBC that Targett was fit now, seemingly he still can't get a look in, if he's good enough to justify an £11-14m fee, we need to be using him. Not sure what's happened to Luiz to not be in the 18. Tough choice which one to drop out of AEG or Jota.

Based on Monday's match, the answer perhaps should have been "both".

Could quite easily have done. Would have meant a change of system I think with Luiz or Hourihane coming in though.

This may be a chastening afternoon if we can’t get hold of the ball in midfield. Would prefer us to match up with Arsenal as I think we will be outnumbered with just the three. They are a bigger threat through the middle than out wide, but we’ll see.

If ever there was a match to get Grealish forward it's this one. With Luiz at the back for them, Jack could be drawing fouls left, right and centre.

Weird about Luiz, I can only think he's been carrying a injury.

Simply because we should develop flexibility in the use of available resources. Because we need thi find a way of getting Grealish and McGinn further up the pitch. Because our midfield needs to be stronger.
I think that the Premier league requires us to be adaptable

Absolutely golden opportunity now for 3 points that we must take. Don't give the ref the slightest excuse to even it up, play smartly and keep the ball.

Make sure we don't get involved in any Arsenal scuffle (no one from us has been booked), keep tight shape in centre of pitch and see what we can do on counter attack.

Arse really are there for the taking.

I’ve got to ask though, is Wes offering any more than Hogan did?

Possibly even less.
At least he ran around a bit.

So what does Dean do now to make the extra man count?

Need to be careful to stay away from any flashpoints in the second half. They will clearly try anything to get one of us sent off.

We're doing absolutely fine, but I'm tempted by Davis for Wes too.

yeah id agree with that change, Wes has been woeful again and I think Davis can hold the ball up better

Arsenal dont have much legs in midfield so just requires patience on the ball to stretch them, huge opportunity now for 3 points

Grealish has been a huge disappointment

Both our centre back are quality players

No disagree - he has been no 2 after SJM - but his end passing has been wrong - something that can be fixed. Worked really hard - box to box

Man City

needs to be 15 yards higher up the pitch and maybe with the extra man he might get some more space

For such a good coach and reader of the game it’s amazing he cannot see the obvious at times.  Game was crying out for Conor and Davis.

No excuses. Another game we should have won against 10 men. Unacceptable!

Dean Smith needs a damned good kicking for this. They were tired and needed a change about 15/20 minutes ago. He really needs to think about his tactics because I'm sorry this should be won and done by now.

Very poor.

Worst thing for me is this isn't the first time. Was exactly the same v Spurs and even on Monday I didn't think his use of subs was clever.

Premier league is ruthless and seems to me he still is game managing like we're playing v likes of Bolton and Rotherham, games you can win in second gear.

As good as many other aspects of his management style are, you need to be quick at game changing options at this level if you really want to be at the top.

Never seen McGinn look so tired. He's losing the ball every time he gets it. Should have subbed him for hotlips at 65 min.

A big fuck you, Dean Smith. I love you as our manager, but you need to wise the fuck up. And quickly!

You don't bring Elmo on in place of a threatening winger against a team of 10 men that look like rabbits in headlights every time we run at them.

2 subs left, but Smith leaves the team breathing out of their arse - This one is definitely on him, same as Monday.

We can all see it - As Chicago said, this is Bruce style management.

the fact we are bringing on Elmo says it all. Champs quality at best

I'm sorry as hell to say this, but so far I'm not sure we've really been the better side in any game, our game management is very poor, we don't look particularly prepared tactically or physically, our movement off the ball is often substandard and looks a little un-coached, and we don't seem to be reacting to any of this. Dean needs to turn this around.

Threw it away. Not good enough Smith. This game was there for the taking and yet again we can't do 10 men. You can't keep saying we are learning as that won't cut it.

Failing to beat ten men in two games running, the latter of which we had the advantage for about fifty minutes and held the lead twice. I usually go for the glass half full approach but I am pissed about how today has panned out.

This is on Dean Smith I'm afraid.

Players gave their all and showed good quality again at times but with the intensity at this level they need help from their manager in the second half.

Dean seems to think we're still playing likes of Bolton and Rotherham where you can win games in second gear.

Unless someone gives him a tactics talk soon, we will be playing those games. But he does have his man.team around him, so why don't they speak up during the game?

Elmo played all of last year as a right back, so now why is he our go to sub for a winger?

Dismal last 20 mins. Why we were retreating and letting Arsenal have the ball I don't know. We had a man advantage. Don't expect a win here on paper, but given the context of the game today, this is a bad loss.

Absolutely shit game management from smith, again. It's what has concerned me for longer than this season, and he needs to fucking sort it out.

Same here, Ger. When we start going on these winless runs he doesn't seem to have an answer. Apparently it was the same at Brentford. Right now he's costing us vital points.

Have you seen anything from these 6 games to think we have enough quality to stay up? Twice in a row, we have failed to show enough to beat 10 men. We're in serious trouble.

We haven't put in a really impressive ninety minutes in the league. Twenty odd good minutes, twenty odd average minutes and twenty odd poor minutes is generally the way it has gone. I thought scoring goals was the worry but scoring two away at Arsenal and conceding three suggests the defence might not be as competent as we thought.

If Smith doesn't turn this around quickly he'll be gone, and that may be the only way we can try and stay up. Totally inflexible to make subs. Why were we so tired when we had the extra time! Dreadful and this is what I expected. If this goes on we'll be down by Christmas.

Take your point but it’s the nature of the defeat (self inflicted) that makes this one so piss poor.

I’d have taken a one goal loss before the game but the way I see it the players got us in a great position, helped by the red card, and smith let them down.

How are they, they had 10 men, the crowd on their back, they fucked up against Watford last week, it's not like they're the Arsenal of old. We threw the points away, Arsenal didn't have to do much to win them.
