What is everyone’s thoughts on the below, taken from The Fields of Athenry...
Outside the Holte End,
I heard a Villain calling,
Saunders they have taken you away,
But you left a great eleven,
Before we went to Heaven,
Now there’s glory round the Fields of Villa Park,
All round the Fields of Villa Park,
Where once we watched Shaw and Cowans play,
Tony Morley on the wing,
We had dreams and songs to sing,
Of the Glory around Villa Park,
All round the Fields of Villa Park,
Where we once watched Shaw and Cowans play,
Tony Morley on the wing,
We had dreams and songs to sing,
Of the glory around Villa Park.
Peoples thoughts??

From a reputational point of view, it is an absolute no.
-
It's a hard no for me, clive.
-
Is it too much of a challenge for us to simply come out with something original?
-
Sorry, no.
-
No, and can we scrap the Allez dirge as well
-
I don’t like the Allez allez one either. It is rather annoying but I’m rather grumpy!
-
I can live with the Allez Allez song as so many clubs sing a variation of it, it has become generic. I'm not too keen on going full Liverpool though, thanks. It's a no from me.
-
When did Saunders die?
-
When did Saunders die?
That occurred to me, thought I'd missed something for a minute.
For what it's worth, the Liverpool version is chronic and doesn't scan, I've always loathed it. Conversely, I love the original song but I'm not sure so sure everyone that follows us will share that view.

Yeah, I don't like the idea of a villa version at all, considering the context of the original song.

I'm with you, Ger.

When did Saunders die?
where does it say he died? We gone to heaven would relate to villa winning European cup....
It was only a thought, cos I am bored of the same old stuff, we need new songs...
-
That is mind-bendingly cringe-making.
So that's a no from me.
-
Can we please delete this thread and pretend it never existed?

Turn up at Villa Park and sing it.
Then we’ll see if it catches on.
I don’t think it will.
Next.
-
Can we bring back
The Bells are Ringing.
I’ll get me coat.
-
Another thing I'd say is in all my time going to Villa, despite all the 1000's of suggestions both good and bad, I don't think I have ever seen a chant conceived on an internet forum taken up at the ground.
As AV82EC says, if you want a song, get a few mates together and try to start it at a game.
-
I hate these threads.
-
Is Dave Chance still around ? Maybe he could sing it at half time

I just looked up its context, and was surprised, as I was with "Flower of Scotland" (1967) that it's not an old folk song at all, but from 1979.

Now that's a song/chant I can agree with ;D
-
Look forwards not backwards
-
A thousand times no, for more reasons than i can be bothered to type.

I'm not interested in what happens down Ashburton Grove.

I hate these threads.
I don't. They amuse me.
-
I think it might benefit from a "fuck the blues" here and there.
-
Nice attempt. But it's Celtic. Leave it alone.
-
Difficult one this. No. No. No. No.
-

No. No. No. No. There's no limit!

I think that is the best idea, bearing in mind we all have a finite number of heartbeats in our body.
Also 5th post from someone -
Fee Fi Fo Fum
I smell the stench of a Nose/Bitter/Dingle wrong un
-
Put me off my late Lunch, thanks :o

I think maybe go the whole hog and sing YNWA.
-
I think maybe go the whole hog and sing YNWA.
In a curly wig complete with Toxteth tash.
-
Is the OP posting from Oslo?
-
Is it a hymn? Ron Saunders will be turning in his, well, er, greenhouse, slippers, housecoat? He might be poorly, but he ain’t dead. A statue would be far more welcomed than a hymn, ta for trying though.
-
cos we’re Villaaaaa
Clap along....etc
Cos we’re happy....
Clap along. Etc
Cos we’re Villaaa
Prefer this

Didn't we sing it back in the day which is where it should stay. Pretty sure you can hear it in the Tranmere game.
As for the OP I like the original Fields of Athenry when sung by Ireland fans but it's an absolute 100% no (as in don't even think about it) for Villa or Liverpool.
-
Let's have a think..........NO!
-
Do not like that song in any shape or form. Original song written in the seventies by a B rate songwriter.

We used to sing it regularly in the 80's, as did quite a few clubs. Our version was staccato in places. It was always Liverpools song but borrowed quite a lot. Pretty much after Hillsborough no other clubs have sung it.

Celtic sang it before Liverpool.

Do you think a poll is needed?
-
"Villa", to the tune of Amazing Grace, sung as slowly as humanly possible.
-
Do you think a poll is needed?
A padlock would be better
-
YNWA was still sung by a number of clubs including us into the early 90s. You hear us singing it at Wembley as Hughes scores in '94.
-
Just arrived in Crewe. Everyone is singing the Fields of Villa Park Fuck The Blues. Amazing atmosphere!

I remember that. It also got sung by Ismay(?) at the last day of the Holte, agaist Liverpool. Quite a few boos near me for that to be fair.

Poll added.
You, the readers, can decide the future of this thread.

Dave Chance and his pink suit. I think that was what fully killed it off for us singing it. I was on The Holte that day and it pretty was mixed to start with as loads started joining in and holding up scarves and a load of others were booing.

I think BFR joined in? I was in the Holte and i remember being pissed off with him but i can't quite remember why. I was hammered though. And "fields of athenry" I don't think so. It's a no from me. If we copied that we may as well change the name of the Holte to the Kop.

Farewell, thread, you were fun while you lasted, but the British people have spoken, and not to implement their wishes would be an affront to democracy.
