Title: Greg Evans
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on August 07, 2019, 07:58:32 PM
Anyone noticed he has left The Mail.

https://theathletic.com/1079482/

Wonder if his actual stories will get any better.

I honestly couldn't care less.  That said, I care even less about Ashley Preece!  Every headline is a clickbait dupe.  His stories can't really get any worse Kippax!! ;-)

Who is the new "Villa" reporter at the Evening Rag?

Edit: checked it myself, it's a guy called Ashley Preece. Looking at his Twitter he seems to be One Of Us. So, good luck to him.

So it’s going to be the same crap on a different url.

I’ve always had an insatiable drive to provide compelling insight on the matters that mean the most but only now can I begin to start fulfilling the aims I set out to achieve in this ever-changing and often much-maligned industry.

The Athletic has already set a new standard in sports journalism and it’s my job, alongside a team of incredibly talented writers, to produce the most in-depth coverage of Aston Villa’s eagerly-anticipated new season.

The club I have covered for the best part of my career haven’t always been close to my heart
but I understand what makes Villa fans tick and my passion is to inform and entertain in this thrilling new role.

So we can look forward to more misinformed sound bites about our club from a Nose Bitter Baggie. Great.

edit: allegiance updated.

Yep.  Not quite as bad as ‘send us the bill’ Howell though.

"Inform and entertain?"  Entertain?!? Translation: lots of top ten lists and quizzes. Ooh be still my beating heart.

Good luck to the guy. Having to cover the Villa every weekend knowing that it could have easily been his mob (if they weren't massive bottle jobs) won't exactly be Christmas every day.

The athletic are American based I believe and seemed to have hoovered up lots of journalists in this country in order to establish themselves over here. I’ve always thought Evans was terrible so how he got the gig I’ll never know.

They’ve signed up some quality writers Stateside, such as Ken Rosenthal, Jayson Stark, David Aldridge and especially Peter Gammons

I mentioned this in one of the other threads - The Athletic is a serious effort to promote longform sports journalism, and they've caused a stir by taking a lot of big names from the national papers.  But they've also taken a lot of local sports reporters/journalists too, because they are presumed to have indepth knowledge of their local team(s) as well as contacts within the club.

So instead of the usual speculation, clickbait and bullshit, GregG will now has to come up with properly researched stories and articles about us, and to higher standards than those demanded by The Evening Mail.

I wonder whether he's up to it.

I was going along with his "I was there when..." list of Villa momentous events until he said how he felt Jack's pain after being punched in the back of the head. There's ingratiating yourself enthusiastically (fair enough) and there's being a bit creepy/cringey.

It probably says a lot about the dearth in quality of the local journalists who cover us.
