Title: Pick team v Spurs
Post by: brontebilly on August 01, 2019, 11:50:55 AM
Not long away now. Think Hourihane will start the season in the team. Is Engels ahead of Konsa?

------------Heaton
Guilbert, Engels, Mings, Targett
-----------Hourihane
Jota, McGinn, Grealish, El Ghazi
--------------Wesley

Steer, Elmo, Konsa, Luiz, Marvelous, Trez, Davis/Kodjia

Think we should make a game of this, as it is so tricky this year!

Rule is you pick the team and the subs.

If you pick a player for the team and he starts: 3 points

If you pick a player as sub and he starts on the bench: 3 points

If you pick a player to start and he starts on the bench: 1 point

If you pick a player on the bench and he starts: 1 point.

In the event of a draw for the winners, whoever posted first wins.

That is the team he will pick, unless we sign another CF/AM who will then take places on the bench.

If Marvelous or David Luiz are deemed match fit enough one of them would take the place of Hourihane however.

Though I might wait to see if we sign a new striker before guessing!

I would pick Douglas Luiz in that DM position we need a natural defensive midfielder against Spurs there midfield will hurt you if given half a chance plus with him sitting protecting the back four free's Jack and John to do there business.

That depends on Doug being ok to play against Leipzig and the work permit being granted.

Can he even train with the team without the work permit ? There's more to the 'job' of a footballer than playing the games

Would be very surprised if Smith starts a left footed centre back on the right side considering he signed two of them this summer. Also Chester is available again but seems to be a long way down pecking order?

Amazing to think only 6 weeks ago the team would have picked itself!

I would swap Marvellous for Hotlips as Marvellous played in ACON he should be reasonably fit and already have a game and a weeks training / introduction under his belt by the time KO comes around.

I doubt Douglas has kicked a ball in vain for a good few weeks and gym work is no substitute for game time so it may be a few weeks before we see him - I would imagine he is available to play in some U23 games due to his age

I don’t see us starting with Hourihane ad DM.
I hope not anyway.

Title: Name your starting XI for Opening Day
Post by: ExclDawg on August 01, 2019, 05:30:44 PM
It seems like I need to do this every year, as I don't have quite the feel for all the transfers that come in, but this year I'm really going to need help.  We could pretty much roll out a starting roster of all new players.

For laughs, here's my completely uneducated guess if we keep the 3-3-4'ish look from last season:

Heaton
Elmo - Konza - Mings - Targett
SJM - Ruis - Grealish
Trezeguet - Wesley - El Ghazi

Which would still leave Nakamba, Engels, and Jota on the bench.  And if we bring in Maupay or another top striker ... no idea then.

I had completely forgotten about Toner. And Lyden.

I remember Lyden because his first name is Jordan and we had a few Jordans around the place at that time.

I think Dean will treat this season as a 'marathon and not a sprint'. Some of our new players will need time to settle, learn their role and prove they warrant a place in the starting eleven. Pity Spurs away first gives us less scope for experimentation. For the first match, Baldy jury says:

Heaton

Elmo
Mings
Hause
Targett

Hourihane

Jota
McGinn
Grealish
El Ghazi

Wesley

Subs: Steer, Guilbert, Engels, Lansbury, Marvelous, Trezeguet, Kodjia.

Our best starting eleven will change a lot over the coming weeks. But for first match, a bit of continuity might do no harm!!

Hourihane will get marmelized in that position. Fred to start at RB and Engles in the middle with Mings. Don't know about DM - why not bung Marv in?

Haven't seen that Luiz has got his work permit yet, but still no place on the bench for Chester or Lansbury.

Pretty much my thoughts too Risso. I'd have Hause over Taylor on the bench too. Which makes me think we may as well try and flog him.

If it was Bournemouth at home for the first match, Guilbert, Engels and Marv would seriously be considered in my starting eleven. I really rate Hourihane, Elmo and Hause and think they have 'toughened up' towards the end of last season and earned a game against Spurs to prove themselves. Jota has had a great pre-season and should be rewarded.

Spurs away, might be a bit like jumping in the 'deep end before you can swim' for a few of the new players.

Brill that Deano has so many options and thankfully, a good head on his shoulders. Mine is spinning!!!

I'd go with that lineup, too.

Yes, Hause can cover centre back and left back, so Taylor misses out too.  If we buy another forward, which we should, then Kodjia misses out as well, as does Davis when everybody is fit.  What a turnaround.

I haven't got a clue on what the team should be for this one, but for the first time that I can remember - out of the team that won their last match of the season, (with some flair I might add), there are only 2 x players that where actually owned by the club, that I want to see in the starting line-up and that's Jack & SJM.

I think Jota is an absolute cert to start the match. With two more expansive full-backs there will be occasions this season where he can play narrower and could even play Nakamba and Douglas together.

First up, though, I can't imagine he'll go too far away from the formation last season, so I imagine it'll be;

Heaton
Guilbert
Targett
Engels
Mings

Nakamba
Grealish
McGinn

Jota
El Ghazi
Wesley

I'd go with Lukey. Jota's been in form, no rush to put Trez in.

Luiz to start if available and played.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Steer start.

Heaton to start, I don't think he's come to sit on the bench. Jed was magnificent last season but he's no longer first pick.

This would be my team and I never dreamed that I'd be picking Jota in a starting 11 when he first signed for us a few weeks ago.  The only two positions that I have to think about is defensive midfield and whether to start with Trez.  For me, the safer bets next week are AEG & Marvelous.
