Title: 6th place in the Championship, final play off spot
Post by: Risso on May 02, 2019, 12:28:23 PM
Thought this possibly merited a thread of its own.  It's the only real item of importance left to decide in the Championship; who else is getting a golden ticket for a chance to win the "Richest Game in Football".

As is stands:

6 - Derby 71 points, + 13 GD.  Final game, at home to WBA
7 - Middlesbrough 70 points, +7 GD. Final game away to Rotherham
8 - Bristol City 69 points, +6 GD. Final game away to Hull City

A Derby win or them matching everybody's results sees them take 6th.
A Derby loss, a Boro draw and a Bristol draw or defeat sees them in the play offs too
A Boro win, and a Derby defeat and Tiny Penis takes 6th.
For Bristol to take it, they need to win, Derby to lose, and Boro not to win.

My prediction is for Middlesbore to nick it.  The easiest of the remaining games, and Derby have a tough match against the Baggies.

Boro win at Rotherham and finish 6th on 73 points.
Derby draw at Albion and finish 7th on 72 points.
Bristol City win at Hull and finish 8th on 72 points.

I want Middlesbrough to get it, beat Leeds and play us in the final. We win, Pulis retires, and all is well with the world.

Derby will have a better chance of beating Leeds over two legs in my opinion but we'd have a better chance of beating Boro in the final.

Boro win at Rotherham and finish 6th on 73 points.
Derby draw at Albion and finish 7th on 72 points.
Bristol City win at Hull and finish 8th on 72 points.

That’s how I see it.

I initially thought Boro but that was on the assumption that derby would be clobbered by Bristol and swansea away. I can see them beating the bitters and taking 6th.

I'm happy with either of those - they both tick the boxes as teams that will be tricky for leeds in the semis but we should beat if they make the final. I'm more nervous about the potential for brizzle in the final, for reasons I can't put my finger on.

Would love for Brizzle City to qualify, for them to beat Leeds and then Villa put eight past them in the final

I think a brizzle vs villa final would be the best game and probably most deserving 2 teams

We would beat either Boro or Derby in the final, just want one of them to beat Leeds

I have this nagging thing in my mind in relation to an old football adage I seem to remember

"You don't beat the same team 3 times in a season"

So with that in mind I want to keep away from either Boro or Derby

Surely the football Gods will right the wrongs (Crippling Grealish and the shitty handball goal) done at the bitters earlier in the year and see us through against this shithouse lot

Boggies will put out a Semi-B-Team,  Derby will win.  The rest is irrelevant.

Don’t agree it’s the only thing to sort .... champions go decide , Leeds or West Brom 3rd /4th to decide plus 6th spot

I’m sticking with Boro for 6th as I’ve done in championship thread since 10 games out

Surely if Tiny Penis does not get them up this year he must be a gonner and then career over - no one would be stupid enough to employee him and his brand of anti football again

Perfect.  A Boro fan at work says he'd take that too.

You've got me worried now. It would be typical of us to go into a final ( IF we get there) all over-confident and get done 1-0 from a defensive error.  :'(

I'm with Risso too.  Been saying for a while that I fancy them to sneak in, and beat Dirty Leeds for us.

EDIT - Ask Alan Brazil about beating the same team three times in a season. He hasn't mentioned it yet this week

As old football adages go it doesn't exactly stand up to scrutiny. I'm still traumatised by Liverpool doing us three times in 1996.

I'm not going anywhere near our record against Man United, bound to be a few examples in there too.

Better than anyone we should know that the stupidity of club owners and chairmen should not be underestimated.

The only time we’ve beaten them in almost 30 years, it was in the wrong match that season!!!

Obvious ones are we beat Blackburn 3 times in 3 weeks in 2010, all cup games. We did lose both league games though. We beat Leeds 3 times in 80/81, and also drew. Ipswich beat us 3 times that season, much good it did the gimps.

I'd rather play a team we've beaten twice than one that's beaten us twice.

We’ve beaten Derby and Boro 13-0 on aggregate this season. Rarely can a side have beaten two top 6 rivals so comprehensively over 4 games. I have every confidence that if we meet either in the final it would be another thrashing we’d hand out.

That's where my £5 went today. 15/1.

I think Derby will get their win at home against Baggies and the rest of the results will be irrelevant. They do have a history of being bottlers but I think they'll do it this time given the opposition...if not, then Boro will take 6th spot after beating Rotherham. Bristol need too many snookers to make it.

Same for me.

Boro haven't actually scored a goal v us in the last six games.

I get the thought they might be due one against us but if we can't be confident going into a possible play off final against them I'm not sure who we could beat.

Albion still have a chance of third and may want to avoid us in the play-off semis.  I can't see them putting out a weakened team.

Derby have to go for it as it is shit or bust - I would not want to reply on other results if I was them

With that in mind I don't think the bitters will risk and key player injuries so the likes of Gayle and Rodrigcheatingcuntybastardtwatez I expect to be rested

One good thing is that I have missed a few matches whilst on holiday and watching the highlights shows I have noticed that Sam Johnson is flapping around like a pillock and has been culpable for a good few recent goals - long may that continue

I really can't see Leeds not getting at least a point that they need to secure 3rd place at Ipswich.

Yeah, I agree with that. It's possible it could end as one of those mad, 4-0 to the relegated team games but it's Lambert against Bielsa at the end of the day.

We seem to have a very weird obsession with Bristol City.
Iv'e got nothing against Bristol City. It's their niggly little shithouse of a manager i can't stand. If by a miracle we met them in the final and beat them i can give you his post match interview right now "the ref gave them everything, Grealish was diving all game, our fans were put in the wrong end of the ground and god made it cloudy in the first half then really sunny in the second half which blinded our keeper for their 4 goals which were all offside"

I really cannot believe anyone gets worked up over an opposition manager saying what Villa do is a good idea and wants his own club to look into doing the same.

He's the only manager i have ever heard bring up where their fans were located during a post match interview. He made it an excuse. If he thinks that would be a good idea for his club thats fine. Bring it up with the right people at the right time. Yes he does annoy me he is a niggly little cnut.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in terms of positioning away fans these clubs do exactly the same thing.
Derby, Hull, Ipswich, Leeds, Boro and Norwich.

From memory:

Behind the goal: Sheff U, Albion, Bristol City, Swansea, Sheff Wed, Forest, Brentford, Preston, Blackburn, Stoke, Small Heath, Wigan, QPR, Millwall, Rotherham, Bolton
In the corner: Derby, Boro, Hull, Reading
Down the side: Norwich, Leeds, Ipswich, us.

In fairness to LJ, he didn't actually use it as an excuse.  He simply commented that it helped Villa and wondered if it was possible to move the away fans to the side at their ground.

I thought his comments last season after the 5-0 were a bit salty but didn't really see anything wrong with what he said after the recent game.  As Ads said, it is their rather strange fans who are coming out with ridiculous comments.  Apparently, we all walk around thinking that we have a divine right to be in the PL and can't accept the league table.  We also cheat and have the support of the refs and the EFL.
