Title: Aston Villa v Norwich City pre-match thread
Post by: Dazvillain on April 28, 2019, 08:23:05 PM
Probably needs more debate leading into a later in the week pre match thread due to injuries, and more very important games thereafter so......

It’s mentioned to comply with EFL rules , strongest possible and minimum 14/18 match day squad should be present so here goes

Sarkic
Hutton  Jedinak  Elphick  Taylor
                   Whelan
Green  Lansbury  Hourihan  Albert
                    Davies

Bench; Steer, Grealish, Bjarnason, El Ghazi, Hause, Abraham, Tuanzebe

4 dropping out from Leeds squad are Mings, McGinn, Kodja and Elmo, replaced by Elphick, Davies, Hause and Abraham

Fully compliant with regs and enough squad protection, thoughts ?

I'd give both Hause & Abraham a run out Daz - Both would benefit from it.  Probably shift Taylor & Keenan to the bench.  Taylor needs a well deserved rest & Tammy needs a game after missing the last 2, even if he just plays 60 minutes.

Play Bolton’s under 18s. Or loan some players from New Brighton Tower FC.

I agree we need to rest McGinn Mings,Steer and Grealish

Ah yes I remember he picked something up with Croatia.

Hope not but let's say Steer is ruled out of play offs with what he picked up today and Nyland is long term then surely we have decent grounds to be allowed to get a loan keeper in at short notice?

Gabor Kiraly has retired now for those who have just broken into a cold sweat.

All of the crown jewels need to be rested...Jack, SJM and Mings.
Axel and Tammy need a game to get up to speed after injury.
I'd also give Hutton half hour as he deserves a send off.

Regardless of the team Deano puts out (definitely without jack, SJM, Mings though) it will be great to watch a game with absolutely no pressure, nerves or tension.

We can save that for the week after.

I'd like to see Hause given some game time at left back. He is one that could come back into the team for the play offs. Likely to be the final Villa game for a number of players, not the most talented but some solid pros in it. Hope they get a good send off.

-------------Sarkic
Hutton, Elphick, Jedinak, Hause
-----Lansbury, BB, Hourihane
-------Green, Davis, AA

Is Chester likely to be fit?

Dean Smith will want to win the game.  I expect him NOT to rest anyone, although SJM might be an obvious choice.  I hope we have the likes of Abraham and Hause back as they will need a game to get ready for the Albion games.

On a side note,  I'm pleased that Norwich are not champions because I don't want to give them the guard of honour!

No need to rest Steer unless he's injured; I would bring in Hutton at right back, and Hause at left back - to give Elmo and Taylor a rest, and to give them some game time.  SJM obviously gets a rest, and probably Grealish too.

Steer; Hutton, Tuanzebe, Mings, Hause; Hourihane, Lansbury, Bjarnason; Green, Adomah, Davis.

Definitely would take a few out of the firing line especially SJM, Jack, and TM they will be vital for the play offs.

Post by: Kimaster1976 on April 29, 2019, 05:56:23 AM
What happens realistically if Hause is fully fit for the play offs, he comes in for Taylor at left back i assume? Never thought id say this but would seem harse on Taylor who's played so well recently.

I also cant see Chester getting back into this team, unless Tuanzebe was moved out to right back.

rest Whelan  , I think conor is fit enough to play this as well as any play off activity .

Green and AA    and Kienan up front , he needs games .

Axel and Jedi at back with Taylor and Hutton :)

Totally agree with this CL.  Hause would definitely be in that category, as would Elphick and perhaps even Hutton.  Hourihane probably needs some game time as he would be the first in line to replace the first choice three, and Lansbury and maybe even Bjarnason could also do with playing time.  Davis needs to start up front and I'm hoping he could be one who could have a mini-hot streak over the next couple of weeks.  The wingers will be two from the three available choices.

I'd imagine they'll announce them after the midweek games. If the playoffs are still up for grabs I'd expect them to concentrate on those. If Derby secure a top six space before Sunday, Villa will be on telly as it will decide whether Norwich win the title.

There is a fine line here between saving ourselves and offering us up as a sacrifice to Norwich who will want the title. A defeat won't be the end of the world and we are due one statistically but one would hope for a narrow loss, brave draw (as Leeds) or a win to send us all giddy.

I shall go for a barmy end of season 3-3.

Don't think we are that good to make wholesale changes. Strongest possible team without taking unnecessary risks. Last thing we need is a big defeat going into the playoffs. Norwich will be looking to finish as Champions so will not take this lightly.

Have we got any updates on our current injury list? Who's likely back or out for Sunday?

I'd like to see us field as strong as possible a side. We'll have the same rest as others, and with this and next week we've a chance to finish off the season with seven consecutive home wins. Norwich still have to confirm the title, I'd rather not see us hand it to them.

And it's our last chance to beat one of the top four this season.

GK, dunno, who's fit? Steer if he is.

Elmo (Hutton on when we're out of sight)
Chester (Elphick, ditto)
Hause
Taylor

Whelan
Lansbury
Grealish

Green
Abraham
Kodjia

The rest on the bench except McGinn. Summat like that.

As long as we get 0 in injuries and suspensions I’m not particularly bothered how many goals we score. Can’t we just all agree to draw 0-0?

They get the point they need to win the league and we get the point we need to guarantee 5th.

I'd go with that. The missus is a Norwich Fan (as are her family).
My brother is also a Norwich fan ( but in the 70's / 80's he was a Leeds fan. He "lapsed" when he realised that they were dirty scum). Started with Norwich as he wanted a team that no-one really hates.

Also rest some players for obvious reasons, but also some a run out, and certainly give Hutton a game.

I remember the feeling when it went in, but for the life of me I can't picture the goal itself. Norwich time-wasting virtually from the off, I remember that. When it kicked off, we could still win the league. A week later, we finished runners-up by 9 points, wasn't it? Made it look not as close a race as it had been.

I shall go for a barmy end of season 3-3.
The final game at home in 1990 was on 28/04 against Norwich, and ended 3-3.

McGrath, Platt, Cascarino for us
Mountfield (og), Fox, Rosario for them.

That was horrible being on the Holte thinking how close we had been to winning the title.

That's where I got my inspiration from, I was on the Holte as well I can still feel the title drifting away, was Mountfields OG a chip over his own keeper (Spink?).

Yeah, absolutely that about the 9 pt gap. To be fair, I remember my Scouse mate saying exactly the same thing, that it had basically gone to wire and the final gap was ridiculous - was the same in 93 when Manyoo won by a similar margin but it had seemed really tight for ages (think we lost the last three). I was at that 3-3 against Naarwich, we played really well actually but with a couple of terrible defensive lapses. God scored.

I would play:

Steer

Hause
Mings
Tuaznebe
Elmo

Whelan
Landsbury
Hourihane

El Ghazi
Tammy
Green

McGinn left out the squad completely and Jack on the bench.

I'd go along with that but with maybe Davis instead of Tammy.

Green, El Ghazi, Davis is a pretty potent strike force.

As long as you don't expect any goals to be scored.

Taylor, Elmo, Mings, Tuanzebe, McGinn, Grealish, El Ghazi, Kodjia, Abraham. All should be rested as we can't afford injuries to any of those. Doesn't bear thinking about having to go into the play offs with Hutton playing or without Mings and Tuanzebe.

Who cares? I’d rest the key players for the semis.
Doubt he will though. Breather for everyone ahead of the Semis.
Just don’t lose.

I reckon Brian would be much more use than Andre has of late.

Don't suppose anyone knows if the club shop is open after the match tomorrow?

Can't find answer on OS.

I don't see why it won't be open, it usually is on a Sunday when we play and tomorrow isn't a bank holiday or anything.

Very true. Let's keep Mings, Grealish and McGinn behind McCormack's gates.

Just watched Deano’s pre-match. The guy is so candid and open. I really hope he gets us promoted this season and we get to see what he can achieve in the PL next season. It will a real pisser if we miss out this time around.

I have this thing of assessing people, where I think, would I like to go for a beer with you? I reckon Deano would be great value having a chat to in the pub. Of some of our other recent managers, I’d have a drink with Bruce and McLeish, definitely. Maybe O’Neill, but that would be a bit intense and maybe not much fun and. Sherwood, no. Garde, meh. O’Leary definite no.

i predict an entertaining - after a slow start - three apiece draw and norach lifting the trophy at the end.

Wouldn't normally bother with the lap thing since the fucking idiots booed Sir Graham, but after ten in a row I'm making an exception.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned already, but there’s a little side note to today’s match.
If we shut out Pukki, and Tammy could find a hat trick from somewhere, they’d be level on goals and share the golden boot. Long shot I know, but would be a nice little reward for Tammy’s efforts with us this season. 💪🏼
