Better in the second half at least.

Roll on August
-
Better in the second half at least.
Yep, slight signs of recovery, but still not good enough, ultimately.
-
Next season we will piss this League🥺
-
In fairness it would have been pretty much impossible to be worse than we were in the first half. Stoke were utter wank.
-
Better second half and but for Butland we could have won it.
-
Another awful ref, where do they get them from?
Too many happy to take the money and not give a fuck.
Surely we must have a better option than Holigram, every free kick useles, so why is he on the pitch?
-
Down to 11th tonight.
Roll on next season.
-
Play the u23s and any player that is likely to be here next season.
Awful.
-
Least second half is something to build on.
-
The only players we have at the club definitely and consistently at the standard we should be aiming for are Tuanzebe, Mings, McGinn, Grealish, Tammy and Chester (when fully fit). Only two of them were on the pitch today. It's no surprise we aren't very good.
I hope we can keep Mings for next season, I really like him. The kind of standard we should be going for.
-
A game between two very average mid table teams who will be in this league for years.
-
Who'd have thought at the final whistle at Boro that we'd go on a run of W2 D8 L5. We'll go into March having won 1 game in 2019.
-
I think if the players had a fraction of the passion we have for the club, we would be in the auto promotion places.

I have a feeling we'll be looking back at Tyrone in the way we do at Robert Snodgrass now.
Even though only on loan, they really understood what playing for us meant, but ultimately they'll get a better offer from a PL club and move on.

I would add Elphick to that list, I think he has done well since his return.
WRT the match, the first half was Bruceball and the second a watered-down version of Smithball. I know which I prefer, just wish it was full-strength.
-
Get In! We got a 1:1 Victory!!!!
-
Some run from El Ghazi for the goal and pass - why do we not see more of this from him?

He was at fault for the Brentford winner, ,didn't get close enough to his man for the first WBA goal (the header), and lost his attacker for the Stoke goal today.
-
Two shit teams coast it out for the draw... playing mostly tepid, lacklustre, uninspiring football for 94 minutes is a pretty accurate assessment of that dross.

^ This is pathetic.

Passion doesn’t win you football matches but it helps a little bit. You win consistently by having better players and superior tactics than your competitors. We are just not any good at the moment.
-
Absolute toilet again today. He clearly isn’t learning from previous games and makes the same mistakes again and again.
-
More police than a royal wedding. And no beer at half time. Poor.
-
After another fairly abject half it was a lot better in the second half, but nothing to go too overboard about given the nature of the opposition.
We actually looked better when not trying to play the ball out from the back. I'd give the two up front another go at least.
Unfortunately we are developing somewhat of a habit of playing against teams on poor runs or with bad injuries and failing to win.

What do you base that analysis on. We dominated the second half . You obviously didn't watch the game did you?

Twat.
-
Get In! We got a 1:1 Victory!!!!
You must be disappointed that your team couldn't hold on.
-
I thought we were the better team but can't really recall a chance after the Abraham header straight after we scored. Pleased not to lose but they were crap and we should have had enough to beat them.

1-1 away at a crap stoke team. Bruce as much as I hated him would have been vilified for the run we are on at present. As much as I hope Smith succeeds he needs to take responsibility for a fuckin awful run of results....piss poor and simply not good enough.

Have you looked at the injury list and John McGinn's suspension?
-
The Manager: Poor body language by players.
Fans: I’m looking for a corner sofa.
-
-
On the train going home, I thought we did very well in the 2nd half, at times looked like a team, yes Stoke are poor, but better away performance than Brentford & Reading.
-
Still, one win in 11 now. Four very difficult games coming up.

No of course not .. after 50 + years of going to villa park I know fuck all about injury lists and shit football teams. I just listen to all the usual crap excuses. Well there ain't no fuckin excuses anymore as far as I am concerned. We are crap...have spent fuckin fortunes and are not going anywhere for years to come.

Absolutely, but better (in the 2nd) than what I have seen recently away, so maybe.........
-
We all thought the comeback against Sheff Utd would be a catalyst. It’s wasnt. I still think we are in for a very bumpy ride through to the end of the season.
-
Just got home, much much better today. 2nd half we looked a real threat.
-
Some Villa fans really are deluded and need to take off their claret and blue glasses if they think this patched up shell of a team is capable of performances and entitled to get results. Expectations are always high for a club of our stature but we have to be realistic when we see the players available and on the pitch. Without our best players we are an average mid table Championship team at best, and to expect Smith to get better performances out of players that are not capable is not realistic. Smith wouldn't be expected to turn Swansea, Hull, Blackburn or Sheffield Weds into promotion contenders without at least a summer transfer window, so he shouldn't be expected to turn this weakened squad to do so either.
-
Get In! We got a 1:1 Victory!!!!
I bet you're gutted we came back to claim a point.

Good. He's been a liability for a good while, so at least Smith will be forced to try someone else back there (if we have any other options).

I’m sorry, but what a bloody stupid thing to say
-
Oh come on...Hutton has been taking pelters all season for being shite and full of mistakes so let's not start pretending that he's anything but a liability and that it won't be a bad thing if he can't play. It's not sad at all...in fact, it could be a blessing in disguise...every cloud and all that.
-
I can’t and won’t wish a Villa player to be injured, I’m not talking about his performance, but to wish injury on a Villa player, sorry not for me.
-
I'm a big fan of Hutton but he has been rather poor lately. I definitely don't want him out injured, though.
-
I'm not and have never wished injury on any of our players...it's already happened, so all 'm saying is that it's not necessarily a bad thing.
-

Suggest a replacement. I can't.
-
Losing Hutton for the rest of the season isn't a massive deal, unlucky for the player, but he won't be here next season. Just a shame Bree is out on loan.
-
We all thought the comeback against Sheff Utd would be a catalyst. It’s wasnt. I still think we are in for a very bumpy ride through to the end of the season.
If there was anyone on here in the post match thread who thought that, they were very much in the minority. Three desperate defensive errors, two from their keeper.
There has been an inevitability about our plight for months.
-
Please refer to my initial post: "(if we have any other options)"...presumably he'll have to play Elmo at RB which unfortunately isn't necessarily a good thing.

It’s certainly not sad, it’s part of the game and he’s had a good living from it.
Good luck Alan. You can leave with your head held high.
Not a bottler.
-
I take back everything I said about passion having watched the Wales team win the oval ball game.
-
May be in the minority but I thought we played quite well today.
Of course this was against expensive opposition facing an even bigger identity crisis than we are but I thought we looked threatening for most of the 90 minutes and could've easily scored 3 goals which is big progress compared to how we've played since xmas.
To quote a prophet I thought Stoke were mince. All they did was taken advantage of Hutton off the pitch (given he was nearly crying after he came off think that will be the last time we'll see him in a Villa shirt) and score v 10 men. I honestly can't remember them having a serious shot for rest of the game. Think their squad actually cost more than ours which takes some doing at this level.
What summed things up was our wide players. Adomah got into some good positions first half but ruined it by always cutting back onto his left for some reason (he took the equaliser with his right well enough) and El Ghazi was a pub player in the first, skied a cross when well placed on the counter and also shot towards the Incinerator when he had a really good chance centrally.
Second half he wasn't far off unplayable. Great work for our goal and he was a threat throughout. Said before I'd like to see him play just off the main striker as he can drift into space and has nice turn of speed.
Given how dead our season is we really need some of these question mark players to step up and start putting in some decent performances.
Thought Hause and Mings were good again and both are very comfortable bringing the ball out from the back from what I saw today.
-
First half I thought we were slow in recovery of the ball and seldom quick in transition. The odd occasion we did do it, we opened them up.
The goal was unfortunate, Hutton lying down being treated and the first phase back, they attack the disorganised space and score.
Despite us not being with it, we were still better than them first half and ought to have scored with El Ghazi skying a sitter.
Second half we were much better. The best we've been since the Albion. Not as incisive as we could have been, but with Jack and McGinn out, it wasn't a surprise.
We were much smarter and quicker in recovery and used the 442 well. We dominated and more than deserved the point. Mings was unlucky not to score.
Better and the first consistent performance for a sustained period, particularly away from home (that was our first away goal of 2019) at a ground we're usually poor at.
Lots of police, lots of drunks, one bloke spewing his guts up towards the back and if you were wondering what was different, they've filled in a corner.
A decent point and a much improved performance.
-
I sense in the post match Smith interview he’s rather fucked off with the players and can’t wait for the summer to gut the squad.
-
I think most of us are.
-

Bree should slot in....oh.
AEM did fine which was good to see after the runaround McClean gave him at VP.
What I like about AEM aswell is he dosen't mess around trying to beat 5 men or do a million step overs before thinking about a cross, he receives the ball and crosses it into the six yard box.
Our other wingers were so bad in the first half I was actually beginning to think he was the best attacking wide man we had at our club which maybe says it all about expectations against reality.
-
Our best display for a while and we really should have won. We attacked with more purpose than we've shown since Smith's early games, unless you count the comeback against Sheff U. Stoke were, admittedly, very poor but I was encouraged by our positive approach for the whole of the 2nd half, and our supporters appreciated this with much more enthusiastic applause than I've heard for weeks.
-
It was Neil Diamond what done it.
Got the crowd up straight away second half.
-
Get In! We got a 1:1 Victory!!!!
Urgh you’re tedious. Must have been devastated when that equaliser went in.
-
Really makes me laugh some people on here. We played well for the first time for ages, the away crowd was behind them, and the players and the manager got clapped off at the end. Probably should have won but ended up with a point. Everyone at the game pretty satisfied. Then you come on here and the same people(most of them not at the game) moaning as usual.
We are not going up, circumstances have transpired against us this season, but hopefully the management that have been appointed for the long run are planning for next season. How about we give them the benefit of the doubt instead of dismissing their capabilities already.
-
but conversely, this is relegation form. I'm not suggesting for a moment that we will be relegated, because there are 13 worse sides than us. But we haven't had any form to speak of since early December.
-
The only thing more tedious than Stuart is the "weren't at the game" shite.
-
Sweet Caroline did the trick. Great 2nd half performance, first half and Stoke were worse than us
-
We were better in the second half, but it has to be put into context. We were atrocious again in the first half and Stoke offered less than Ipswich did at VP a few weeks ago, that’s how bad they were. All of these teams that are supposedly awful that we have failed to beat, Wigan, Reading, Stoke, Preston who had all those injuries etc, it doesn’t say a lot for where we are at the moment. We are extremely poor and a 1-1 draw away against that Stoke side is disappointing.
-

It's frustrating but ultimately that's what happens when a target drifts away and everyone at club deep down knows it can't be achieved. Of course if we win every game in run in we can make top 6 but we're not good enough to win half of what is left.
We're like a team that gets to 40 points in the premier league by March and barely wins for the rest of the season.
Anyway instead of the usual arguments what I want from rest of the season is players to step up and show us they can be good players at this level.
Mings already has (Elphick was again more shaky today than him imo) so hopefully we can get him full time. Hause is improving after his awful start so he's another potential as is the enigma that is El Ghazi. If Andre Green can get a run of starts and show he's capable at this level that will be another boost and mean squad requires a little less surgery than the major overhaul it already needs.

Stoke still have plenty of players who'd get in our team.
They're in a massive flux like we are. Manager wants to play one way and the ones still on massive prem wages couldn't care less. They've underachieved more than we have this season.
-
I hadn't realised it's only 3 wins in 17 games. That's shocking. The season cannot end soon enough and we rebuild. I hope that the manager does get time to build but at the moment, I see nothing to suggest that he is a great motivator or will bring in the type of players that will swing us closer to the top two next season. I hope that I'm wrong but it's still pretty inconsistent and lacklustre for the most part. Injured players and some bad luck to be balanced, but we have to beat shit like Stoke. Tough games coming up and I think we are too far off now to hope to land a play off place.

Circumstances have transpired...
Respect for your attendance but I’ve watched most (probably all, apart from the odd ten minutes) We are exactly where we deserve to be.
It’s depressing for fans because the club has spunked more than any team.
That’s where my frustration is - it would be understandable, if we spent like Burton.
-
It’ll come good. Of that I’m certain
-
I'm in London for the weekend, only followed the updates sporadically but I'm heartened by the reports of how we played rather than the result. That is the key, we need to play well, the results will follow hopefully.
-

Very good point. I could not believe that our arch-nemesis, the Ginger Pirlo, was an unused substitute on their bench.
Both clubs are in debilitating flux: we have to hope that we have layed the basis for emerging from that sad and sorry state.
-
Poor again in the first half. Much better in the second and we should have won it. I'll take a point away from home the way we've been playing of late.

Yes there are a few older players out of contract which probably won’t get renewed but surely we’ll have the same problem not being able to attract interest from others for our under performers that will still be in contract.... similar to last season ?

Great post.
I had an intersting perspective today...I read a lot of posts here saying there are a lot of players who don;t try, don't give a f**k etc....
For first time ever I was in the very front row - it's not a great view from a perspective point of view, but what you do get is to see the players fighting for position at free kicks and corners, making challenges, chasing down balls.....my opinion is they do care and were trying, they are just short on confidence, which is what we had in spades earlier in Smith's tenure.
From half time onwards the fans were up for it, and the players were too....could/should have won it second half.
At the end Tyrone made a point of giving his shirt to a young Villa fan....really hope we can sign him permanently

I agree, much better in the 2nd half, I felt we were going to win, I havent felt that for a few weeks.

Get In! We got a 1:1 Victory!!!!
You really do need to grow up.
-
El-Ghazi, pissed me off so much the last few weeks but that run and assist was fucking brilliant.
-
It was and well taken by Albert, if only the 2 of them could do it more enough, starting next week would be good.
-
One gripe from today, I thought Smith should have brought Green on earlier than he did.
-
One gripe from today, I thought Smith should have brought Green on earlier than he did.
Think it was only in response to the Adomah Injury
-
I read a lot on hear but don't post a lot.
My take:
1st half we were absolutely abysmal. Mistake after mistake continually throughout. Summed up by Hutton making 2 mistakes in 2 minutes before going off injured. No one came in at half time with any credit.
2nd half we were much much better. Dominated the half but didnt really create much but fully desrrved the eqauliser and probably deserved to win but oddly didnt seem that bothered in the last 5 minutes.
Coming away from the ground I was tying to think of positives - yes Steer may be as good as the other goalies we have wasted £15m on.
Other than that none really. Will these players be in a promotion winning team ? Are they premiership players ? No.
Please Deano forget Haus now. He's not our player and is techically awful, play a Villa man who may benefit from playing til the end of season.
UTV.

I too agree with the original post, I thought we played much better especially in the second half and we had McGinn out as well.
Then Hutton gets seriously injured early on which upset the shape until we got a replacement on, fans shouldn't forget our injury list or suspensions.
The Villa fans were brilliant and the Stoke fans were doing what Villa fans do at home, getting on their backs which is not the way to support your team.
Still thoroughly enjoyed the game even the stroll after the game along the towpath back to the station on a lovely Spring day!
As mentioned above special mention to Tyrone for giving his shirt to the little lad on his dad's shoulders down at the front, class act! UTV
-
Special mention for Whelan who I think played well, which I find surprising as I don't really rate him.

He did play well today
-
I thought Whelan and Hourihane ran the game second half.
We weren’t great in the first half but I think Ads described it well earlier.
A massive improvement and hopefully the start of a more positive run in to the end of the season.
-
Watched the second half on a stream. We were the better side, passed it well. Didn't see the first but guessing we were poor, heard ElGhazy missed a sitter.
Probably the expected draw between two underachieving squads.

I hope that I'm wrong but it's still pretty inconsistent and lacklustre for the most part. Injured players and some bad luck to be balanced, but we have to beat shit like Stoke. Tough games coming up and I think we are too far off now to hope to land a play off place.
With such a poor run it was astonishing that we stayed in touch with the top 6 as long as we did. Anyway, first half we were awful and Smith looked totally lost. Then as I'm about to lose all faith in him he brings out a second half performance which gives me a glimmer of hope.

Smith gave a much better interview aftern the game. More honest than in the last few weeks and said he got into them at the break whaich clearly got a response. He’s got a lot to contend with right now. Hopefully a few players start to come back into next month and April that at least gives some hope for next season. Although I imagine we won’t be seeing a good chunk of this squad together again come August.

Be great to finish the season well to give us hope for next season, likely to be big squad changes though.

The improved second half gave me much more confidence than recent weeks. Needs to be carried into the next game though.

If you look at who might go up from the Championship, who might come up from L1 and who will likely come down the league shouldn’t have a Newcastle or Wolves type dominant side. I know we love said it before but with the right investment and time to prepare the objective has to be promotion next season. It won’t be easy but we should be making sure we are the favourites come August.
-
Special mention for Whelan who I think played well, which I find surprising as I don't really rate him.
Agreed, also a shout out for Hourihane too. It cannot be easy playing in front of a critical crowd. Personally I think he had a good game (well second half). Fair play to him.

Well, this is the bit I'm worried about, both in terms of funds available and the club's ability to bring in the right players.
-
Give Smith the right players and I’m sure we’ll get promoted playing good football. We saw a glimpse of what it could be like and it was a thing of beauty at times. Bring in the right calibre of players (they need to be better than those that he had at Brentford) that can pass, move, create and close down to play his high press attacking game, and it will be a pleasure to watch next season.

The owners are minted. We will be shedding some very large contracts in the summer. Despite the concerns of FFP we just lashed out £10m or so on a Gk and RB. I think we will be ok relative to our competition in what we will be willing and able to spend.

I hope you're right, but then there's the other, not insignificant bit I mentioned - getting the right players with the required mindset and ability.

It's always a concern. But if he's able to do what he did at Brentford and get those types of players in then we'll be in a much better place next season. Smith is struggling with what he has to work with but you can see like today's second half that when it clicks it looks good.

These would be the Brentford players who have the following record since Dec 22
W6 D3 L1 ??
I watched their only defeat - at Forest - robbery

Oh, I'm not worried about Smith's abilities (or lack thereof) - at least not yet. I'm sure that he knows exactly what particular qualities he's looking for in a player. I'm worried about the club's ability to identify and bring in the correct kind of player without paying through the nose. Villa hasn't had a stellar record over the past decade in that respect.

I’m really not sure what point you’re trying to make...Brentford battered us the other week but they are currently 2 points behind us in 16th, in one of our worst seasons in recent history, and so it’s pretty obvious that we need to be signing players of a higher quality than the current Brentford squad to be in with a shout of promotion next season. This is just basic facts unless you expect Smith to perform miracles just because they are wearing claret and blue.

Get In! We got a 1:1 Victory!!!!
You're a fucking knob mate.
-
The Manager: Poor body language by players.
Fans: I’m looking for a corner sofa.
-
still haven't found one yet

What?
That reads pretty clear to me!

Weren't they close to the top 6 when Smith left for us?
Not saying we should sign half their squad but they have some talented players who'd improve us in the final third, Sawyers and Maupey obviously and Benharama scored a brilliant hat trick yesterday so he looks one to watch.
We're like to lose for various reasons Tammy, Kodjia and Hogan in the summer so obviously need to get some new attackers in.
-
Dean needs to be finding the new Sawyers Maupay and Benarama's at a fraction of the cost they would cost us if we bought them in the summer.

Is the right answer.
He also needs to look a bit closer to home first.

Brentford have a good scouting/recruiting system that doesn’t revolve around the head coach.
-
I see a couple of people on here like Benarama.
Is it love in the first degree?

It aint what he does it the way that he does it.
-
That run by El Ghazi was great when he picked out Albert. Pace and power down the left flank.
-
Why is he doing it in fits and spurts though? He should be dominating fullbacks, he's big, strong, quick, but seems to disappear for games on end.
-
Much better second half that's something to build on but like the rest of you roll on next season.
-
I sense in the post match Smith interview he’s rather fucked off with the players and can’t wait for the summer to gut the squad.
I was talking to a Norwich fan last night. He said during season break Farke was ruthless. Moved on lot of old players and found some real gems to play he wanted to play. This is what Dean needs to do.

Absolutely. It should be a fascinating summer.

Farke used the german market which he knows so well, just like David Wagner did the previous year.

I heard he bought one of those wooden frogs, some overpriced marzipan and a pretzel.

No wooden nut crackers in the shape of a hussar?
