Ian Ross has passed away HEITS
-
A great signing for us, very significant as I have just posted on the deathwatch thread. Very sorry to hear the news.
-
RIP Ian. An important figure at the heart of the start of a memorable Villa era
-
OMG I loved him - captain of our team when we got promotion back to Div`1 - like chico, Jimmy Cumbes and Aitken for various reasons not quite there when we got back but played a full season in the top divison. RIP Ian
-
Our former skipper Ian Ross has very sadly passed away aged 72. 175 games for us in the early to mid 70's winning promotion and the league cup in '75

Such sad news, was our captain when i started to attend regularly. RIP
-
Fine player, fine captain. RIP Ian
-
One of my all time favourite players and the first Villa Captain I saw lift a trophy. RIP Ian Ross.
-
A very important player and leader.
-
Captain in my first ever villa game.
Part of the team that set me on the right path.
Hope we beat the Albion for you Ian.
HEITS
-
Very sad news. RIP
-
A shocker,R.I.P
-
One of only four men to lift a trophy for us at Wembley?
-
One of only four men to lift a trophy for us at Wembley?
Indeed.
-
RIP.
-
5? Dennis lifted a trophy there even if Perryman was also lifting it.
-
A class player. R.I.P., good man.
-
Was Captain during my early years coming to Villa Park----wore the shirt with pride,
Condolences to family and friends,
R.I.P.
-
A great captain and true professional
So sad to hear of his passing
RIP Ian -
My sincere condolences to his family
-
We were blessed to have him play for us and now God is blessed to have him amongst his flock. No doubts, God will ask Ian to wear the armband behind the pearly gates too.
-
'He's supreme he's the boss and his name is Ian Ross'
Such an important name from my youth.
-
Not a great weekend results wise but made even worse to hear of the death of Ian Ross .Along with Chris Nicholl he was one of my favourite Villa defenders of all time .Can picture him now raising the League Cup at Wembley after we beat Norwich R I P Ian
-
Scored the penalty in the 58000 plus game I was at as a 14 yr old that gives me my userid. Best days ever '75-77. UTV
-
I got to know Ian in the 80s. A very nice guy he was managing in Iceland at the time. We often reminisced about the 74/ 75 season but despite all the success of his time with us I think he retained a lot of fondness for Liverpool.
A sad loss.
-
That game versus Sunderland at Villa Park is etched in my memory. Ian Ross was imperious that day. A vital part in our eventual European success. RIP captain.
-

Indeed.
That was the first thing I thought of when I heard the news: one of a select few Villa captains to have led a victorious team up the Wembley steps.
-
One of my early favourites at Villa Park.
Rest In Peace Ian
-
Before my time but it's always sad to hear of ex players passing. RIP Ian.
-
A very fine player and captain, his signing from Liverpool was quite something at the time for a club in the third division, and he did not disappoint.
-
It is hard to imagine your heroes dying, he was certainly one of mine.
Always seemed a modest guy, I have a cutting from him joining us from Liverpool, us at the time attracting players from them seemed a portent of the future.
God bless My Captain
-
Three or four years before my time following Villa but a big figure in a crucial time in our history. RIP.
-
RIP Ian Ross. Condolences to the family. I will always remember that match vs Sunderland in 1975 when Ian scored a pen in the 2-0 win in front of 58k. As a young holte-ender I got separated from my dad because of the crowds. I met up with him again in the trinity road stand with the help of the police and ended up watching the match on the Witton End stand amongst the Villa and Sunderland fans. I can remember my dad drinking champagne which had been offered to him by the celebrating Villa fans after Ian's goal. Thanks for the memories.
-
Wow what a shock. I got to meet Ian here in Australia many years ago, I think he was coaching with Wolves and they were here on a pre-season tour.
Such a nice bloke I told him I was a Villa fan and we talked about the 1975 League Cup win.
What a leap of faith joining us from Liverpool when we were just out of Division 3.
-
Great captain, what a steal from Liverpool!
A true legend ( for me anyway)
RIP and condolences to family and friends
-
Remember sitting next to him and Gordon Smith at Highbury when we thumped QPR 3-0 (Sir Brian hat-trick) in the second semi final replay. Cultured player and great captain.
-
Very sad news my condolences to his family RIP Ian.
-
Very sad news one of my favourite players, as others have said he was one of the Villa captains to have lifted a Cup at Wembley. RIP Ian
-
One who played a major part in our return to the top flight. An outstanding player and captain.
-
Somber news indeed. He was a rare classy player. Memories of my first trip to Wembley in '75 are now a little sadder.
-
Class defender.
Like McGrath he could read the game exceptionally
-
Great Captain,
Great Leader,
RIP Ian Ross

I hear black armband will be worn by Vila players v Brentford to remembe him
I have heard of others way before my being able to follow in my life but I hadn't to Ross but reading on here he was obviously a well respected figure and your knowing him is a nice touch
Nice story and sharing there thanks.
Sounds like a great chap on and off pitch.
May he RIP

Me and a mate were waiting to catch the Bus in Walmley to take us to Villa Park one Saturday in the early 70s when a car pulled in and the passenger asked if we wanted a lift to the game. The passenger was John Robson and our Captain Ian Ross was driving.
Nice touch from a couple of nice guys who made two young fans day.
RIP Ian

Great story, Larry.
This class of thing was not uncommon back then, and explains why the fans identified with the club so closely in those far gone days.

That’s a brilliant story and shows the bond that existed back then between players and fans.
I was a nipper when he signed for us and as I’d seen Ian Ross play for Liverpool I was might impressed. I also remember his penalty v Sunderland in 1975 meaning every Villa outfield player had scored that season IIRC. And don’t forget his headed clearance off the line ( nearly) from Ted McDougall at Wembley in 1975. It could have been a different result.
He was a very fine and important player for us. Exactly the sort of pro you want to buy when you need experience in your team - the type of person we were sadly lacking in our last few seasons in the premier league.

Thanks PM I'd forgotten that header

Ian had already scored that season. The story goes that Jimmy Coombes was going to take the penalty meaning every player had scored. Unfortunately, as the penalty was to make it 1-0 (iirc) Ron decided against it.
-
My memory is a bit hazy but I think that Sunderland needed either a draw or win to be promoted. Jim Cumbes told me that Ron decided that if Jim didn't score then there would have been an uproar in the press etc.

They definitely needed a result, which is why at 1-0 a bit of showboating couldn't be risked. I love Juggling Jim but he was as likely to hit a penalty onto the M6 as score from one.
