Title: Aston Villa vs Swansea City FA Cup 3rd Round: Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Legion on January 02, 2019, 03:46:16 PM
I'm assuming it goes to a replay in the event of a draw. If not, I'll amend the poll.

4-0 win.

I'd love a cup run but for me the league is much more important at the moment.  If I was Smith I'd mix it up and give a rest to those players that need it.

I'm already anticipating that the highlight of the day will be the pre
Match balti pie and chips - I don't know if that says more about the Villa or the current state of my life :)

Play the under 23's and only those who need game time, such as Lansbury, Hogan, Jedinak and Davis.  We are not going to win the F.A. Cup and I don't fancy going to Liverpool or Man City in round four and getting a tonking!

Bollocks, we've entered it, I want to win it. Pretty sure Burton weren't expecting to get to the semi final of the League Cup when they drew us and look how that turned out. And I'm not even going to mention Bradford. Or Moscow and Martin O'Neill.

Rest McGinn , I'll live with that, but otherwise play a proper team, in front of a big crowd and tear Swansea a new one......it would do great for confidence as well.

I suspect the most exciting thing of the match will be that 'kick the ball onto the round thing on the half way line' thing they do at half time.

Such is the deflated state of the Cup.

Hourihane Lansbury (if fit)
El Ghazi Bolasie
Abraham (I refuse to believe the rumours and think getting him cuptied can't hurt)

And I want to win. Every game.

Expecting something like;

Lansbury Whelan Ohare

Sure. Let's pick and choose which games we want to win and lose. It's always worked out well for us in the past.

Can't we try something different, like, just trying to win every game we play? Odd, I know, but worth a try?

Most teams fighting towards the top or bottom of a league change their team for cup games.  They do this for a reason.

It's clear to see the likes of McGinn & Hourihane are knackered at the moment.  Chester has been carrying an injury and Tammy has had a heavy workload.  I think most managers in our position would change it up.

I would still like to see us win this once in my life time but understand some players need a rest and others need a chance (love to see what O'Hare can do).
Still going for us 3-2 and a Premier League outfit at Villa Park in Round Four.

I'm looking forward to not being nervous at a Villa match for the first time probably since the last time we played an FA Cup game.

I'd very much like to see Keinan Davis get some significant game time. I assume Smith will go for Hogan up top though, particularly if there are doubts about Abraham staying. As others have said, it would be good to see O'Hare start. Injuries seem to have held back most of our promising youngsters recently (Davis, O'Hare, Green etc.). Taylor and Lansbury to start if fit. Would consider throwing in youngsters if they aren't, rather than revert to Hutton and Hourihane. I think McGinn could do with a rest. Would also start Hause in place of Chester if he signs in time, which appears unlikely. I'd go;

               Kalinic

Bree  Elphick Chester  Taylor

    Bjarnason, Lansbury

El Ghazi    O'Hare     Bolasie

              Hogan

Steer, Revan, Bedeau, Doyle-Hayes, Adomah, Hepburn-Murphy, Davis

Is Steer cup tied? He was on the bench for Charlton's first round match vs Mansfield which was drawn, but was not picked for the replay and the second round.

Forgotten man Esah Suliman was recalled for that Dutch club he was on loan at on 28th December after only featuring in their first team for a total of 9 minutes in 2 appearances. He could feature against Swansea this Saturday. A CB who can also play at RB..

As do Hourihane and Mcginn in midfield

Be nice to give Hogan and Davis starts so hope smithy can be flexible with the whole 1 striker also Revans at left back for the opportunity to play

The  midfield picks itself perhaps with lansbury to come on

Steer in GK
Defence
Elmo Bree  Elphick  Revans

Midfielder

Bjarnasson.

Adomah

Presume Kalinic is cleared to play this? If so, might be no harm to play him behind Elphick and Chester. Don't think we have another option at centre back anyway.

-----------------Kalinic
Bree, Elphick, Chester, Taylor
-----------BB, Lansbury,
 Adamoah, El Ghazi, Kodjia
-----------------Davis*

* certain Hogan will start but Davis as a focal point would be the better fit.

In his latest pressing, Mr. Woodhall opined that the game was likely to be a match between a Villa Representative X1 and Swansea's U23's. Even allowing for irony, this may turn out to be something like the truth.

Agree about Davis, but would also think about playing Kodjia centrally.  The new keeper should start, so it will be interesting to see how he goes.  I get the feeling that Smith quite rates Lansbury and that he might get a chance, so he might get a game.  I would stick with Bree at right back for now, so would give him more game time there and would play Taylor if he is fit.

I would like to see Jake Doyle-Hayes given a chance in the defensive midfield role with a bit of experience around him and see how he does.

Meant as reference history, on the very off chance we reach the semi or final.

I would obviously like to win; I wouldn't mind an away day out in the next round if possible.

The last 3 cup ties featuring a majority of reserves and youngsters have not gone well: Peterborough, Yeovil (although we won) and Burton and those were all against lower league opposition.

I am hoping that whoever comes in tomorrow at least makes a case for inclusion in the first team line up or match-day squad.

Not for me. A few changes maybe, but let's go for a win.

Part of me wants to agree but teams that make five or six changes tend to lose anyway, may as well give it to 11 youngsters that know each others game.

We need to get out of this league.

Whatever happens with the team I'm sure we'll do something a bit more thought out than playing Rushian Hepburn Murphy up front and hitting high balls with him hardly able to even see his nearest team-mate.

audition to replace Abraham may be starting

Not a big fan of hogan, but if he plays we have to pass it on the deck more than we did against Qpr at times. And far fewer crosses from deep

If Hogan is playing I might be tempted to turn back and head back up the M6 - just watch him in the pre match warm ups - he looks so disinterested and I've yet to see him hit the target ;)
You watch him bag a brace now !!!!

You know what VCTM, you've just reminded me of something my tiny brain forgot!

We got in about 2.45 on Wednesday and the players had split into two groups, some were doing shooting drills in front of the Holte on the Trinity Rd side.

I couldn't make out who was in goal, I assume Bunn, but Ive not seen anything like it. He literally just stood there and barely moved a muscle, watching everything either fly past him or go wide. He then just ambled off the pitch.  Whoever it was shouldn't be at the club, never mind near the first XI.

i don't see how he's going to throw in loads of kids even if he wanted to because we've been saying all season

the kids aren't ready
the kids are injured
the kids aren't good enough
Smith has no options to play kids
the kids aren't alright

so to suddenly think he's going to fill the team with kids is a bit unrealistic

Hogan
Kodjia

I'd go with that, I'd have 3-4 of the U23s on the bench as well.

I saw just now there are hardly any tickets left

I know season ticket holders get it free but even allowing for that, to sell out the rest of the ground is impressive.

And yes, I know season ticket holders are included in attendance figures whether they turn up or not.

Don't have a strong feeling either way about this one.  Have a feeling both will field weakened sides.  My feeling is Swansea will edge it  1-2.  Elphick to get ours.

Kalinic

Bree
Revan
Elphick
Taylor

Adomah
Lansbury
O'Hare
El Ghazi

Hogan
Davis

I assume Chelsea wouldn't let Tammy play in the cup at least until the deadline passes. It'd be nice to see some of the younger lads on the bench so they can get half an hour after our fourth goal. 😜

Really have no clue on what the score will be, or indeed what sort of team we should put out.  Usually I have the FA cup well down on our list of priorities at this stage of the season, but with the disruption to the team with injuries/Abraham possibly leaving, I'm not sure whether Smith shouldn't just play his strongest side so they get a bit of coherence/confidence and treat it as a league game almost.

Hello mate, happy new year. I hope you're well.

I don't think it's on AVTV today, mate. I may be wrong though.

Hoping Dominic Revan starts today, has been on the bench regularly recently, Dean obviously rates him.
