We got lucky in the end to get a draw. Whelan is such a poor player and he neither offers anything to help the defence or anything at all in attack. A meaningless, useless bog standard footballer. And our defence is just shit, but then we all knew that. Full backs both had poor games.
Anyway thank fuck for Kodjia today. Disappointing result
-
Fuck sticks
-
Didn’t lose. Drawing too many of these sort of games.
Stoke are mince.
-
Play offs at very best this season if we can sort the defence out in January
-
We won't be going up automatically this season, just too far behind now. No fault of Smith's, but he separately needs a new defence and keeper in January.
-
Plus point is scoring twice despite playing pretty poorly. Too many had an off day and the defence is just an accident waiting to happen. It's now 30 goals in our last 6 games. Boring boring Villa.
-
Our defence is making far too many bad errors, we score a lot of goals but fucking hell we concede a lot. It’s an average result, and thank goodness for Kodj.
-
Centre of midfield is a problem area, alongside the defence. Minor surgery is an understatement Deano. We didn't lose, well done for that because I honestly thought we might today.
-
Decent point based on performance - big few weeks coming up
-

Sadly it’s not waiting to happen, it is happening a lot and costing us games.
-
I sounds like we were quite fortunate to get something out of the game. I didn't realise JG was out for 2 months - & that concerns me as much as our defensive frailties. Hey ho, it is what it is innit. It doesn't bode well for Leeds, but hopefully Deano can work his magic at BMH in the week.
-
January can't come soon enough. What is it with Whelan?? Just get rid ffs!
-
Where’s this bollocks about Grealish being out for 2 months come from? Smith said he hoped he’d be back next week.
-
Never mind. We are still gooing up.
-

Some sad bluenoese on twatter no doubts.
-
We've got better team spirit and the entertainment that we were all clamouring for but the end result is still too many draws - I'm not sure what we can expect Smith to do this transfer window to shore up the defence ....... Top two is too much of an ask now I feel - still think a play off spot is a reasonable ask but whatever the outcome ,the closed season will be a big one for the club ......
-
Disappointing result but we didn't deserve more than a point. Stoke packed the midfield and we had no response. Too reliant on pushing the ball wide with hopeful/pointless crosses into the box even though we actually scored from one, it was a poor tactic to have no alternative through the middle. Credit to Stoke, they did a job on us even if they're a team of journeymen with no real talent, they'll be happy with the point.
I couldn't understand Dean's plan today, even less when you see Whelan playing in an attacking midfield position second half and you've got Jack's obvious replacement, O'Hare, sitting on the bench.
The attack is a mish-mash of genius and ineptness, far too inconsistent to get us in the automatic positions. The less said about the defence the better. Hutton and Chester for the first, brainless Elmo for the penalty. Whilst I appreciate the weather conditions were not perfect today, with the squad we have there's nobody to blame for dropping points today other than ourselves.
-

I disagree - automatic still very much in play. If we beat Leeds next up we are 9/10 points off 1st at the halfway stage - 69 points to play for and a very real chance we go on a winning streak through Jan and Feb. And I just don’t see Leeds or Norwich going on like Wolves / Cardiff did last year.
But we must beat Leeds and we must strengthen defense in the window.
Deano is doing a wonderful job and we are on the up. UTV
-
Amid the recent euphoria, today's a useful reminder that we don't (yet) have the players for us to steamroller our way up the table.
-
I'm not sure how scoring at least 2 for the 7th game in a row is an inconsistent attack tbh.
-
Where’s this bollocks about Grealish being out for 2 months come from? Smith said he hoped he’d be back next week.
I'm pretty sure somebody mentioned it on the match thread, but thankfully it appears to be BS - having checked the facts. I just hope to God he's back for the Dirty Lot next weekend.
-

On paper I agree but today we created very little.
-
And scored two.
-
Rome wasn't built in a day.
-
Rome wasn't built in a day.
True Nev, we knew we'd drop points under Dean and today was that day. If we have to go up through the play-offs, so be it. I'd rather do that playing progressive football than do it the Cardiff way. Onwards and upwards.
-
The attack is doing fine, what's costing us is the defence. Last 4 games we've scored 5, 3, 2 and 2 and managed 1 win.
-
Why was McGinn pushed so deep. Lucky pen for us and a sensible header by Kodja I’m content we live to fight another day
-

I think we all knew the defence was going to be a problem area until January at least.
On another note, I see that the smooth running Brentford machine that Dean Smith was apparently only a small part of have lost eight out of ten games since 'the head coach' left.
-
With industrial teams like Stoke you need some adventure to break them down and a backbone to keep them out. We all knew losing Jack would be an issue, so playing Whelan made no sense at all. It completely blunted us as an attacking unit. Then the worry was if they scored could we get back into it so in a way it’s encouraging that we were able to.
But our fucking defence, clowns that they are found a way to lose points for us. Today, Albion, Forest, QPR fuck how many games have we conceded from outright stupid mental and technical errors. 4 of our 5 defensive players are very replaceable, so when the manager says in January we need tweaking not major surgery. I strongly and respectfully disagree.
-
Just back. A bit deflated if I am honest.
-
I thought we were pretty poor, to be honest. Elmo was truly brainless in giving that penalty away. Our defending at times is frighteningly slack.
On the bright side, we still took a point.
That's the coldest I've been at a match for a long time. Fucking freezing and absolutely shitting it down, too.
-
I don't think Grealish will be back next week, listening to Dean's post match interview but Jedi, BB and Angela will be. We will need more creativity in the centre of the park to beat Leeds. Hourihane and Whelan ain't it. We need to purchase a player in that area in January imo.
-
Delighted with a point to be honest as we were second best all over the park.
-

Or give O'Hare a chance.
-
Yeah maybe. Decent player, throw him in.
-
Play offs at very best this season if we can sort the defence out in January
Yes that's my take on it as well.
-
I think we need some perspective. Stoke have still got a very decent squad and were PL last season. At the start of this run I wouldn’t have given us much hope of many points. But with arguably one match left in the very difficult run we are still only three points off the play offs with some very winnable games in January and February and with a better defence and keeper.
Finally, we are so far behind the top two because of the sheer incompetence of Bruce neglecting the defence and not being able to get a tune out of a talented squad for the first quarter of the season. It’s done very bad damage.
-
Well it was like Tuesday night in Stoke in wet cold December today. Just thawed out. We never got going but Stoke had a part to play in that. Their niggling tactical fouling slowed us down and our defence did the rest. Terrible error by Elmo for their penalty. After the first half I thought we will not score today and Stoke were marginally more competent throughout the game. However once again we popped up with goals to salvage a deserved draw.
-
The way I look at it is...our attack is a plus....our midfield is a neutral...and our defence is a negative.
-
Thor would massively help in the midfield.
-
Why was McGinn pushed so deep. Lucky pen for us and a sensible header by Kodja I’m content we live to fight another day
Totally disagree, blatant penalty which the referee nearly didn't give!
-
And another thing seven injuries seven. When the fcuk are we going to get a break.
-
Stoke still our bogey team then
-
Did not see it today as busy at work . I did quickly look at a FB stream and saw we were 2-1 up , danced around cheering and then realised the score board was back to front ffs and we were 2 1 down .
-
We missed Grealish today. Our counter attacks were a touch too slow today and that allowed Stoke time to get back and double up.
I'm quite happy with a point tbh. Stoke have been like us in 16/17 so far but they were better going forward than I expected with Berahino as a lone striker and I thought Joe Allen had a superb game, sort of player who'd look brilliant in Smith's system imo.
They have strung together a 9 match unbeaten run now so they will be contenders for top 6 come May.
It was a scrappy game and one we could've easily lost so I'll take the point and move on to Leeds. As things stand we are actually narrowing the gap to Norwich aswell.
-
Yes, it was cold. And very, very wet.
-
Horrible weather. Started off brightly but then we were below average for the rest of the first half. Defensive frailties continue to dog us - Hutton was at fault for their first and Elmo for their second. Thought Bolasie and El Ghazi had a poor day at the office. And we missed Jack in the middle big time - would have liked to see Callum O'Hare given a shot there rather than circulating Hourihane and McGinn, and Whelan offers very little other than recycling the ball. But playing below par and still scoring 2 against a pretty decent Stoke squad can't be sniffed at, and a point apiece was probably a fair result. Maybe it would all have been different if Ince had been given a deserved second yellow for an outrageous dive, but, as we know all too well in this division, the officiating is inconsistent at best and generally poor. With other results going against us I think we're a safe bet for the playoffs but feel automatic promotion is slipping away

Very good summary, I would say, although some paragraphs would have made it even better.
The old dialectic of form and content.

Worth remembering Stoke have a very good squad at this level. Slow start but they are 9 unbeaten and are probably as much contenders for top 6 as we are.

From that I'd put Bjarni in. We've seen he can get in box and get goals so think he's the best bet of that lot available if Jack isn't available.

Agreed. They are a very good team at this level.
In fact, there are quite a few decent teams, and people banging on about the division being shite are barking at the moon if you ask me.

This sums it up.
Fullbacks were poor, Whelan and Hourihane together create awful lethargy, and neither winger were really in their game today.
The journey back oooop north was effing ‘orrible after a hideous day’s weather.

-
Just back after a horrendous journey home. Really pleased with a battling point as I thought we were bang average today.
Set pieces were awful, the two wingers were poor, although at least one didn't spend the game moaning at team mates for not serving everything up on a plate for him. Stoke used the width really well and got in behind us for fun.
We looked a bit lost without Jack and for me, CH really flatters to deceive.
Today was the sort of game I thought Scott Hogan would thrive as a central attacking striker so I was a bit disappointed Dean Smith only gave him 7 minutes plus added time. Then, as Scott trotted around without breaking sweat, I could completely understand why DS chose to leave it so late!
So, with all that, to battle back twice and gain a point against a side from the PL last season, at least shows we won't roll over for anyone.

Exactly. I mean, the guy who played at RB today was just fantastic wasn't he? Did a great job of leaving McClean free for most of the game and then giving away a ridiculous penalty.

Hutton was at fault on at least 4 occasions, one of which lead to their goal so yes, Jesus is probably shedding a tear right now.

Ref must have seen it as a dive because of the way he allowed us the advantage - but should have booked Ince (for 2nd time) as soon as the next time the game stopped.
Bottled it as he knew he was on a yellow.

Yes that's my take on it as well.
Why? We just beat Derby and Boro away 6-0.

The gap is getting bigger. Our defence is still a liability. We should be winning all these home games to even begin catching up.

I can't see us getting close to the top two positions but if we beat Leeds and are in touch with fifth and sixth come the end of the month then we stand an excellent chance of the play offs providing we strengthen the defense. Hutton's becoming a liability again and Nyland is a total liability. Occasional decent saves, like one today early on, but so indecisive in his distribution from feet and hands. We really missed Grealish today.

Yes that's my take on it as well.
Why? We just beat Derby and Boro away 6-0.
And conceded 9 in our last 3 home games.
-
Hutton is getting torn apart by nippy, younger wingers. Both Barnes the other night and Ince today made him look well past it. Other managers can clearly see it as they're obviously targeting him. He's been directly at fault for at least two of the last four goals we've conceded.
-
We are not going up automatically. How are 6 other teams going to fail and let us in. Besides, 48 points minimum will get us to 81 points. I cannot see that being enough for 2nd. Top 6 yes.
-
Play-offs will do nicely and is the most realistic option at the moment.
-
Well it will as long as we win them
-
I've been drinking, but with our firepower, and Mr Smiths nous, it wouldn't surprise me if we didn't lose again all season ;)
-

If we can finish the season on a really good run there are not going to be any side we will fear in the playoffs. Even that numpty Bruce got us to final. If we get there this time I’m pretty sure we won’t play for extra time and penalties.
-
Apart from in the cup.
-
Got back home and have eaten and warmed up so feeling more charitable now.
All in all today is probably a point gained as I thought Stoke were the better team and we had to come from behind twice. I think some posters are being harsh on them as they played decent football and used the width well. Generally they were better in midfield than us Joe Allen and Woods in particular.
Too many of our players were below par but unlike others I thought Whelan was better than most and did some good defensive work. He also played what looked like the best ball of the first half, curled behind their defence. Nyland also made a few good saves and held just about everything he could, though is starting to look more comfortable with the ball at his feet. I don’t have confidence in him though.
The front 3 were average today and I don’t think we won a meaningful ball in their half for about an hour. The wide players also didn’t protect the full backs as they should have done meaning we were always vulnerable down the flanks.
I knew it was another our day with a shit journey up, realised my seat in K4 was on the right of the Holte and there was an ongoing feud between a bloke and several stewards all through the first half just behind me. He had called McClean a “non poppy wearing terrorist c@#t” and refused to back down when given a warning by the police. It veered off into “I was in the army and he supports terrorists” territory for a while and even the bloke’s daughter was beseeching him to calm down.
Journey home was shit too - bad weather and slow traffic punctuated by two signs warning of people and then animals on the M40. I was waiting for the inevitable thud to finish off the day.
Play offs is the best I can see us achieve this season. We are too weak defensively.

TBH only Leeds and Boro (untill the last 3 games ) have looked solid at the back Norwich , Derby , WBA have all looked poor at back .Our problem is we are having to play catch up so draws now are not good enough.
Have only seen the highlights but both goals look really poor defending , the 2nd especially wtf was Elmo thinking

Blimey....thought My day at villa park was just average Glad it wasn't as bad as yours...!
-
Just got back. Hard to believe there were four goals in that match when you think how poor first half was. I think Stoke had the better chances and Nyland had a decent game, first half from Villa felt like a Bruce performance. Kodjia had a good impact once he came on and v refreshing to see Hogan come on at 2-2 when previously we would have settled for a point. I don't think overall though we showed too much quality but McGinn was again MOTM. The ref was appalling and Stoke fans gobshites as usual. Days like today I think showed why automatic promotion will be beyond us in my opinion.
-
Not sure whether to be pleased we salvaged a point from a poor performance or just plain annoyed with the poor performance. I was disappointed with what happened after both our goals, thought we'd be pushing on but they overran us instead. I was pleased in the post goal euphoria that he brought Hogan on but in truth it was a daft move to leave us so light in midfield and we barely mustered a chance as a result.
-
I too thought Stoke were the better team but still played like Stoke.
Filthy weather and a Bruce style performance, we miss Jack.
Hourihane was crap, the amount of times he ran away from the ball and not offering himself for a pass was annoying. Surprised he was not replaced.
Both of our fullbacks exposed too often.
Too many draws toting up, we have to focus on the play offs.
-
Kippaxvilla2 and pat mcmahon probs got it about right. Point gained rather than 2 lost on a day when under smith we were under par. Abrahams seemed isolated (especially 1st half) Nyland and whelan did ok though i personally would like to have seen O Hare filling the Grealish role. Today was just one of those days when stoke did ok despite their obnoxious fans. Auto promotion was always going to be difficult (but not impossible) after bruce's mismanagement early season. In Deano we trust, keep the faith and the dream of promotion will be achieved whatever the means.
-
All teams at this level concede fair amount of goals. Colin Murray referenced on Quest Norwich fans are worried about the number of goals they've conceded and they're clear in second. They've just had an easy run of fixtures lately so can get away with conceding two a game.
Leeds conceded 4 at West Brom a few weeks ago.
It will level out when we start playing bottom half teams again as they won't have the quality to cut open our dodgy defence.
-
How long did their fucking no.9 celebrate scoring that pen?
It was like the fucker had scored a blinder to win the FA cup final.
-
Leeds conceded 4 at West Brom a few weeks ago.
Since then they've won 5 out of 5.

Give us Bolton, QPR, Reading, Bristol City (a game you said they were awful in until Bristol got a red card).....
I think people are underestimating how tough a run we've had. All teams we've played since Swansea apart from Bolton have been top half. Think that's taken a fair bit out of the squad having to be full pelt every game. Need more breathers like Bolton at home.
The reason we're off the pace is we couldn't beat bottom of the table Ipswich who had 10 men half the game, Sheff Weds who've hardly won a game since, PNE who turned up at VP with the grand total of 5 points....
-
Woods did well in midfield again for them - has any player ever done so consistently well against us in recent years ?
-

Shane Long wishes we were back in the prem I think!
-
To think the run of games we've had has been really tough. I know it's too many draws but we've lost several key players through injury - Jack, Bjarnason, Adomah, Jedinak etc., so rotation has been difficult.
-
It ain't over yet.
The table boxing day last year.

Blimey....thought My day at villa park was just average Glad it wasn't as bad as yours...!
Cheers mate!
I forgot to say it all started within 500m of leaving the house. I went to fill up at the local garage and the queue for the pump I was in was 5 deep, with 3 in front of me. The selfish bastard at the front had filled up but didn’t return to the car. I asked the woman in front of me what was up and she wasn’t sure so I went inside to ask. Turned out he had gone to the toilet and had been in there for 10 minutes but instead of moving his car he had left it there.
I hope he drove into a giant marshmallow and that somebody super glues his locks.

I went to my first villa game for several years today. I was looking forward to seeing Smith's brand of attacking football but there wasn't much of it going on. Also I couldn't help noticing how quiet it was for a decent attendance and wondered if this is how it has become while I've been away.
-
Just seen the goals again and there was some pretty poor defending for both. Hourihane then Hutton for the first and Elmohamady for the second.
-
We need to win 9 out of the next 10 to get us in there.
-
So three out of six of the teams that will were in the top six on boxing day dropped out of the picture at the end of the season. So I reckon this season it will be Boro, Sheffield and Norwich.
-
If we don’t go up through play offs I’ll literally eat my hat.

It’s way too cold for such folly. You’re gonna need it next week my old son.
-
We are not going up automatically. How are 6 other teams going to fail and let us in. Besides, 48 points minimum will get us to 81 points. I cannot see that being enough for 2nd. Top 6 yes.
I would argue that we should be favourites for automatic promotion. The majority here think that we will finish top 6 and as others pointed out we have leaked 9 goals in 3 home games but we are unbeaten in 7 after facing the November/ December games that we feared under Bruce.
.Third place is only 6-7 points away ,held by either Derby and WBA.I think that we have already proved that we are superior to them. Also we will improve by at least addressing some of our defensive issues in January.
Then that leaves theorectically only one team to catch as 2nd place is enough
Today's game gives me encouragement because Villa and Stoke ,both outside the top 6, are on long unbeaten runs,so the top 6 will come under more pressure as games become more difficult.A slight wobble from Leeds or more likely Norwich becomes more probable.

Hmmm.... ;D .... Thanks some of you ;)
I anticipated a larger backlash about Jack being out
... but we did the job.
Rowett is BFS / Pulis / Warnock ~ a sedentary Manager.
My only Crit about us, a BIG Crit, is we have no plan B.
I expected Smith to take the blame.
I expected Jack's absence to be an excuse.
WE DREW ![/b
I hate to say this.... BUT..."We Move On".... :D
-
We are no worse off really after yesterday's results. We are two further points away from Leeds and Albion but have gained on Boro and the blades. No worse with Norwich. Two or three players coming back next week to boost the depth of the squad and then the January sales open. Long, long way to go yet. We can only get stronger, due to players coming back, and the minor surgery. If we can beat Leeds then we throw it wide open.
-
YEP Mate.....
:)
My only REAL worrry is in our "Selling" or "Returns"
We do have a FFP consideration,we are payin £50-60K per week for at least one of our loans ~ £35K a week on another....we can't continue that unless we get promoted and do a QPR on the EFL ... that is ignore our EFL Financial debt in the Prem...where they can't chase us :D :D
That's a GAMBLE that XIA chased.
My only worry is a "Settling" period by our new owners in January.
Chase the Dream... or Lose Out and be Hammered by Xia's debts ?
-
Yesterday’s game highlights perfectly why we are looking at Sawyers. Without Jack we don’t have that player who will put their foot and the ball and drive/dictate play.
With a new keeper, CB, LB and sawyers we can really push on.
The great news is that I really can’t see us losing games. We win the majority and the gap can be closed quite quickly.
Do feel we are destined to do it the hard way though UTV

A decent point in the end considering how off our game we were. We missed Jack, Bolasie is wasted playing on the left and I don't think Whelan took a decent corner all game. We're going to throw in performances like that every now and again I suppose.

Much of what you are saying is true. Awful weather had a lot to do with it both the crowd and play. I said to fellow ST holders next to me at HT that that half was as bad as anything we saw under Bruce. However we scored a couple of times and could have snatched it in injury time but it wasn’t good yesterday.
-
Spot on Ad@m. And it was no accident. Lambert took it upon himself to serve his master Randy Lerner by forcing down fan expectations.
-
That was the worse we'd played under Smith.
We deserved no more than a point.
I thought our full backs looked poor; Hutton on the wrong side and Elmo first game starting there in a while didn't help.
The midfield was all wrong. Hourihane has done well of late at the base, but he was poor in a more advanced position. He just lacks movement.
His crossing was dire. He was a free kick and 5 corners.
Whelan did ok defensively, but I was very surprised he stayed on the pitch for as long as he did.
I was convinced it was going to be one of those days, especially when we actually put a good bit of football together and ripped them open, only for Bolasie to miss the target. Then Abraham and El Ghazi not slotting home from a yard.
But we found a moment of quality. Excellent cross for Kodjia. One of the few times we got in behind them.
Stoke had an advantage with the weather. Woods was poor and found our players more than his own, but Allen played well. I thought we stood off him too much and he got his shot off for their first too easy after Hutton's error.
But the filthy weather seemed to affect their 10 behind the ball and dropping into two low blocks routine less than our static and not very expansive game.
Still, we found a way to pick up a point.
Leeds will be a far more open game and Grealish will be back and taking two men out of the game with his movement for others.
-
Disappointed this morning. I would be happy to put this down as “one of those days” but dropped points v WBA & Forrest, makes yesterday seem worse. We need to start winning games very quickly. Lots of points still to play for & hopefully some good additions in January. UTV

It was exceptionally quiet yesterday. I think everyone was just frozen solid. It felt a little warmer for the periods of the 2nd half when we stood up, & I think the Stoke fans were maybe a little warmer than us due to away fans standing throughout!
The atmosphere at Villa Park has generally really picked up in recent weeks but yesterday was incredibly flat.
-

I agree, filthy day and a disjointed game.
I thought Stoke were organised and their defence was physically strong but we played into their hands with the predictable nature of our game. I take a positive from a point after going behind twice.

Still fine for the big games. The Boro play off semi was best atmosphere in years.
Like all clubs it's a bit more difficult to get a cauldron going when it's a mid table clash in December with awful weather.
-
The defending is consistently costing us. It was Hutton's and Elmo's turn today and ordinarily I prefer them to play than Taylor.
Whatever one's opinions are, I though MacLean was their stand out player with his drive and energy.
Our play was mostly food and drink to a couple of seasoned premier league centre halves.
Clearly we are going to miss Jack as even when he's below par, he usually constrains a couple of the opposing players just from his threat.

Yes me too. I feel more pleased with this point as I thought we were going to lose the way we'd been playing.

They knew that without Jack our threat was down the flanks. They completely won that battle (until Bolasie’s cross) and so nullified us.
I thought Stoke generally played the better football yesterday and were well organised. We barely made their keeper work. Hourihan and Whelan are not mobile enough as a pairing in midfield to play against better teams.
Atmosphere was really poor, and I was in the Holte Upper. Back in the day a 35k plus crowd guaranteed a good atmosphere.

Did anybody else find the attendance annoying?
36,999? Just wrong.
Whelan and Hourihane were a huge problem. It's what I thought we should go with initially, but I changed my mind and wished Smith had. He got it wrong yesterday.
Either move to 2 up top or bring O'Hare in to find space for himself or others.
Wouldn't surprise me to see Angela start against Leeds although, Smith said Jack should be back.

Would've been really cool to have an exact 37k attendance, wonder if that's ever happened before. Abroad they tend to round up attendances to nearest thousand.

Agree about Whelan and Hourihane together. It was the same against Blues and it makes us a bit one paced and lacking any real energy in midfield. I think Dean Smith rates Lansbury and wouldn't be surprised to see him start if Grealish is not available.
-
I wonder how much havoc the attendance played in the Guess The Crowd competition.
-
This is a game we would have lost under Bruce-but probably only 1-0.
-
I was glad to get home yesterday to dry out and thaw out. We had too many players having an off day yesterday, Elmo and Bolasie especially for me.
Also some of the passing seemed a bit slow paced compared to recent games, beat dirty Leeds please and it will be a great Christmas.
-
Been viewing this part of the season upto christmas as a massive bye (in the cricketing sense) because well frankly this side won't go up as it is, and there's nothing Smith can do about it till January. Having said that, considering this is still the side Bruce was seriously planning to mount a promotion challenge with, i don't think we can have too many complaints overall. If he gets the right personnel in during January then a play-off place should be assured at least. I just hope there's a bit of money available or barring that, he can move some players on to free up some wages for new arrivals. He's obviously shown he can polish a turd so far - lets hope he's as good wheeling and dealing in the transfer market.

I don’t rate many of our players as highly as a lot on here
but even with this squad we are capable of the play offs
-
It was freezing yesterday at Villa Park and we got a point so let's beat Leeds next week and everything will be back on track.
-
mebbe, but i don't think you can seriously expect to go up even via the play-offs with a defence like ours however many you score the other end.

we haven’t lost a game in 7 even with our defence against some of the best teams in the division

Let's hope it's a balmy Aston when we face Leeds, and they don't have the temerity to try and stifle our play :)
All joking aside guys, it's December, it should be cold unless of course global warming has turned Brum into a sub tropical paradise
I should imagine the Leeds fans will be well up up for creating their own atmosphere at the weekend - hopefully more than matched by the Holte and a refreshed team -
Yesterday wasn't a surprise , particularly with the current defensive line up - I had forecast 3-2 but couldn't decide to whom.
Leeds are gonna be tough and may just be happy with the point unless they smell blood in the shape of our backline
1-1 or 1-3

That's hardly been due to the defence though has it. Way i see it something has to give. Its highly unlikely an injury is going to make the defence better, but its possible an injury up front could disrupt the goals. As it stands we're on target for 70 odd goals against this season. No-one goes up with a defence that even a spurs-era Ardiles would describe as "a bit iffy" (One for the kids there). I fully expect the manager to sort it January but as it stands today. Nope.

You do know West brom have kept one clean sheet all season? They'll be in the top 6 and be as confident of going up as we are.
In any case a new keeper coming in January is a near certainty. Someone like Tom Heaton would be massive upgrade.
-
We'll be top 6 for certain.
Whether we finish automatically will depend on whether we can strengthen the keeper and defence and enter January and an easier run within 9 points of 2nd.
If we can, there's a good chance.

Smith's defensive record is better than Bruce's ,14 against in 10 compared to 20 in 12, against better opposition. Under Bruce we only played Sheff U of the top 7,under Smith we have played 4 of the top 7 and 3 away.in fewer games. So the results are very impressive ,considering time implementing his ideas was lost to international breaks.Injuries can also affect defences,Barny as a defensive screen has been sorely missed. We do have options up front, witness Kodjia's impact.
Yes the defence needs improving but even at the moment it's not a lost cause,Chester is regaining form.

We went on a very good run after Christmas last year and still couldn't quite make up the ground for automatic promotion. I think it might well be the same this season, but do think we are a good bet to make the play offs.
-
I don't like drawing parallels between now and then, as this season has a very different feel to it.
That run culminated in us achieving our only brief spell in the automatics since we've been down here, then be it complacency or being "found out", we couldn't maintain that form. Which, in my opinion, wasn't all that spectacular anyway, but was good enough to beat those we played.
I get the feeling we won't stutter and splutter in quite the same way if we repeat that sequence again.

Stoke did their homework on us and knew how to nullify our play without the trickery of Grealish to contend with. This allowed them to put two or sometimes 3 men on Bollassie making him less effective. A draw was a fair result and a very good result if you consider the contribution of Hourihanne and Whelan in the middle.
-
Injuries told on us this weekend. We missed Grealish. Thing is he keeps us consistently ticking over, and when he isn't there the inconsistency of Bolasie and El Ghazi is exposed. Also, some credit to Stoke who competed very well on Saturday. In the early comments someone claimed Stoke were "mince", but they weren't.
-
I dont get the pejorative use of the word 'mince'. What's bad about mince? Mince is tasty. If we're going to use a foodstuff to describe something awful it should be tofu.

I am on my second BMW and my Mrs is on her third mini, so all cars made by BMW, and we've noticed that the outside temperature value displayed on all of these cars was almost always a half value. By almost always I mean about 90 percent of the time. Clearly the same software within, with some sort of bias to .5 values.

A Blues fan I used to work with was always quite critical of Rowett, which I found quite surprising seeing as they were doing pretty well under him. Stoke have a strong squad on paper and Rowett's pragmatism might be holding them back a bit, but I think they will probably be in the play off mix at the end of the season.

given the money they spent they should - but then so should we,

It will be a person who was going to go but thought they'd stay at home instead and watch TV on an odd volume number.

What is wrong with you?

I dont get the pejorative use of the word 'mince'. What's bad about mince? Mince is tasty. If we're going to use a foodstuff to describe something awful it should be tofu.
My favourite curry is mince based. But it also has chicken and egg in it. Begum Bahar. Fucking brilliant.
A fucking dirty filthy bastard egg in a curry!!!! think I would rather have a steaming turd in mine

That's a Vindapoo, isn't it?

It's all gone a bit 'Pathetic Sharks' in here. Except for the fucks and the bastards and stuff...

Nothing. That's the setting that gives me a comfy temperature in the car without all this whole/even numbers bollocks.

its all kicking off in the controversial in-car temperature controlled environment off tangent thread

Only saw highlights but appeared as if Rowett successfully exploited our weaknesses. Failure to track runners from midfield as seen with Joe Allen's goal and our full backs getting isolated one on one, seen for McClean's penalty.
In fairness, there were 2 daft penalties given away. Their right back barely competed with Kodjia for his fine header, while Hutton was at fault for the second time in two games. Not a good day for the full backs on both teams.
