Post by: SoccerHQ on October 24, 2018, 09:52:57 PM
Ten years ago yesterday, October 23rd 2008. All seemed right with the world then didn't it?

Our last great european night really. When you look back it was a really good Ajax side aswell, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Luis Suarez and Huntelaar all started for them that night.

Full game here:

For me i still think the two home games vs Inter were better, especially in terms of atmosphere and performance.  1994 especially, that was an epic night. Still a decent result nonetheless Vs Ajax.

I remember watching this the night I arrived to live in Taiwan. I'd messed up my hotel booking, and ended up staying in a hotel/brothel in some seedy part of Taipei.

I had to rent the room by the hour, and needed to plug a cable into my laptop to get internet with a dodgy stream. My bed was heart shaped with a similarly shaped mirror above me. I found out mid game that I could make the bed spin 360 degrees and that there were a tonne of UV lights everywhere. All to the sound of the iraqgoals commentary mixed with squealing and other odd noises from the other rooms.

The game was a belter, too.

The best European night I ever witnessed at Villa Park was Atletico in 1998 but the Ajax night was a great night too.

Great game and great era. We took it for granted didn’t we?

I remember getting home after that game and setting my alarm for 4:30am to go back to VP to queue for Prague away tickets.

Took the time period for granted is such a good analogy.

There was quite a bit of moaning about O'Neill's style of play and signings even when we were flying high during this period, alot thought we should be doing even better and Champions League nights were imminent.

My god little did we know what standard we had to accept just a few years after this.

Very true, Ajax was only a group game and we then foolishly squandered the Moscow games which blew up in our faces.

I still think back fondly to our run in 97-98, so many thrilling games v likes of Bilbao and, Bucharest and A. Madrid.

I wasn't at the Inter game in 1994 as I was living abroad, but me top three would be the Super Cup final against Barcelona, the Inter game in 1990 and even though we lost the Juventus game in 1983. What an atmosphere.

And Bordeaux, no? I remember Savo winning it for us.

Personally our games against Atletico Bilbao and then Steaua Bucharest in 1997/98 tops the lot.  Especially the Steaua games to take us to the Quarter Final. here seemed to be something magical in the air on those nights.

I did exactly the same too!!!! Me and my dad queued up.  I remember the ticket office finally opening about 8.10 and they gave us cups of tea.
