That sides makes me realise how much we really need a centre back and a left back.

1-0 us Jimmy.

De Laet looks like a different player this pre season (and yes I know it's pre season)

Still not convinced we've got the right personnel  for 352 - especially sown the left

Kodjia needed fitness and confidence to get himself going again. And slowly he's starting to get back to form.

We've looked very lax at the back this pre season from what I've sern

Happy with the goal but that's pretty much the most experienced team he could make, do people still think there's a chance he'll change his spots and pick the kids?

Title: Re: Burton vs Aston Villa Friendly Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on July 21, 2018, 03:24:48 PM
This is pretty turgid stuff

Vs Walsall 352 looked like it made us really move the ball wel

Today the extra bite from the oppo shows up the weaknesses of some of our players and lack of pattern of play

Lansbury really needs to start doing more

Kodjia and adomah are a threat but my god they're going to frustrate me if they play upfront this season
Title: Re: Burton vs Aston Villa Friendly Match Thread
Post by: andyh on July 21, 2018, 03:28:46 PM
Taylor is as fucking woeful as ever.
Green will never live up to his hype.

The left hand side needs completely revamping.

Title: Re: Burton vs Aston Villa Friendly Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on July 21, 2018, 03:29:17 PM
Lansbury is doing exactly what's he's done his entire career, he's coasting waiting for a chance to show everyone he's brilliant, after which he' ll go full peacock and offer nothing for the rest of the game.

Taylor is the biggest problem for me, if he plays this role regularly next season we're fucked.
Title: Re: Burton vs Aston Villa Friendly Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on July 21, 2018, 03:31:22 PM
Burton definitely the better side and finding space down the outside of our back three regularly

We've barely kept the ball for the last 20 mins

Good competitive work out

But would like more details evidence that having a settled squad is starting to mean we're more coherent

Plus we can't go into a season w the current set of centre backs.

Fuck me that was shite from Hutton, I know he's a cult figure amongst the fans but he's an awful player.

They should have had two or three by now
Title: Re: Burton vs Aston Villa Friendly Match Thread

Burton should be 4-1 to the good by now.

Post by: aev on July 21, 2018, 03:34:46 PM
As per the last few seasons I really do wonder what they do on the training ground. Their movement is miles better than ours and if they could finish we’d be 3-1 down.
Title: Re: Burton vs Aston Villa Friendly Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on July 21, 2018, 03:39:14 PM
It really is pretty embarrassing fare

Maybe we'll revert to a back four second half

Adomah has been awful as has Lansbury, Taylor and Hutton

Title: Re: Burton vs Aston Villa Friendly Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on July 21, 2018, 03:39:27 PM
This midfield is all wrong, Lansbury and Hourihane don't work as the deeper 2 which is forcing Grealish deeper than he should be and as a result we've struggled to create anything.

We need a more commanding presence at CB. Love Chester but he’s a brilliant, intelligent clean up type player. It’s why he looked so good next to Terry. But CB is a weak spot right now. And Neil Taylor is back to his usual gash level.

He's gonna play one of 'em centre forward second half.  That first half display was nothing more than embarrassing.

Why do we have 2 goalkeepers on the bench?

The same reason we've had 4 right backs on the bench and played somebody out of position at right back.

If I'm kind, the pitch does look very bobbly

Same for both teams of course but they're more used to it

Hopefully we can get into our stride a bit now. I found that first half more sobering than a pre season game should be

Are West Ham up next? They drew 2-2 with Preston today. Aranutovic scored twice and they also played Yarmolenko so as good as last two results have been, that game will be massive step up in quality for our defence.

because RDL can play right, left or centre back and was already in the squad but instead we spent money that we clearly didn't have on buying in a replacement who didn't do much wrong but wasn't an upgrade over anyone we had in the squad.

From the little I have seen of him Matt, I think he would be suited to playing the sitting role in midfield and just keeping the ball moving (bit like the job Ryan Woods does so well for Brentford).  The only thing that might go against him in some eyes I suppose is his size.
