Tuesday 14th, 7.45pm Kick off.
Sorry to annoy you all further but we're about to know our first opposition of the season shortly.
-
Yeovil Town away.
-
Not a bad draw.
-
Cup upset specialists. Do well to win that.
-
The closet Villa game I've ever been to in 45 years! Only 8 miles away for me.
-
Would have liked a home draw but a chance for some of the younger members of the squad to show what they can do.
-

Well deserved!
-
Blimey that's a tough draw....... we can`t be expected to compete with the likes of Yeovil :)
Do they still have a sloping pitch? If so, SB can get his excuses in early
Seriously though, it will be a good tie to blood some youngsters
-
it will be a good tie to blood some youngsters
I imagine we’ll be using league games to blood our youngsters next season.
-
Chuffed for Dorset. He covers more ground for Villa than a Milner does in an entire career.
-
Just checked how far it is to Yeovil for me. Surprised that Google is quoting over two hours.
-
We have never played Yeovil, have we?
-
We have never played Yeovil, have we?
Not sure but don’t we have Ron Saunders in common?

Soccerbase says no. (http://www.soccerbase.com/teams/team.sd?team_id=154&team2_id=2905&teamTabs=h2h)

I thought he managed them in between his stints at Tonbridge and Oxford.
Just checked on Wiki and it confirms he managed Yeovil between 1967 and 1969 and then moved to Oxford.
-
I wasn't on about Saunders with the Soccerbase link, just the fact we've never played them. But there you go.
-
After our cup “performances” ovet the last few years I think I will give it a miss...
-
After our cup “performances” ovet the last few years I think I will give it a miss...
Was just thinking that. We'll probably put our "second XI" out as we need to concentrate on something else.
-
Last year we would have sent a number of our kids there to give the older players a rest. This upcoming season the young kids may well make up most of our first XI.
-
Maybe we could persuade them to give us their share of the gate money to help us out?
-
Away End still has no roof, should be lovely if it's pissing down!

Nah early on in the season so imagine we'll put a decent team out like we did at Colchester.
I got a bit of stick for siding with SB for his weakened team v Posh for various reasons but league cup is easier competition to have a run in as Bristol showed and we have good history in it so far too early to write it off.
-
Absolute nightmare to get to apparently. I think you have to get off an actual road at Bristol and then hire a carriage drawn by otters for the rest of the trip.
-
Where is the best tractor park?
-
Good draw. Not the easiest of places to play. Sure they will smell an upset. But can't get too excited about the Cup that early in the season. As always the league is the main focus and we need a solid start in that. Should have enough depth in the squad to try a few fringe players out.
-
Yeovil drew 2-2 with Mansfield all goals in 1st half !
I like to see another rotation by Bruce
Bringing in RHM and Bree for starters
-
I would keep a fairly strong side.
If draw is kind it's more realistic to have a good run in this competition compared to the FA cup especially as it's early in the season where no teams in the league are ahead of the pack.
-
Bruce said in his post match comments that he'd be making a few changes, which would be expected. However, it's also a good opportunity to work on a few things, so I hope he just doesn't do a completely random selection of kids and reserves. I'd go something like:
Nyland
RDL Tuanzebe Chester Taylor
McGinn Lansbury Whelan
RHM Kodjia Green
If RDL is now not banned after his stint in Blegium, he needs game time at RB, as does Tuanzebe in what is supposedly his best position of CB. RHM needs a full 90 minutes, and I'd give McGinn an hour to help him integrate further. Kodjia needs to start to try and get him out of his torpor.
-
Ah, didn't see the other topic towards the bottom of the page, please delete/merge as necessary and sticky the other one?
-
We should be able to put out a relatively strong team, even if we rest the majority of those who started yesterday.
Something like:
Morreira
Clark; De Laet; Elphick; Taylor
Adomah; Whelan; Lansbury; Doyle-Hayes (or AN Other, not sure if he can play wide)
Hogan; Hepburn-Murphy.
-
Seeing as we have new players to settle in who didn't have a pre season with us I would rather keep the same side from the weekend for some continuity so they can get used to playing with each other. This game is an ideal opportunity for that.
-
There's no indication that Hogan's fit is there? According to Bruce, "Scotty" is still injured.
-
I'd play Nyland in goal personally, just to get him settled down a bit
-
Yeovil 1 Villa 4
-
The bombscare will be back making it difficult whatever happens, we should still have enough but I feel an uncomfortable evening coming on.

McGinn has already been playing competitive football since July due to Hibs being in in Europe. Remember how we were always knackered by March when we used to play in the InterToto? If we can get a chance to rest him I see no harm in doing so.
There is an argument that we should keep Nyland in to build up his confidence and get the defence used to playing in front of him. However, I suspect that Bruce will have promised Morreira the chance to play in games like this.
-
0-2

The poll needs updating as there is no extra time in Carabao Cup .
Only 90 mins and straight to Pks!
Oh and the Carabao Cup in any games at Premier League grounds will use VAR.
Extra time will now only be played in the final at Wembley, while the ABBA penalty format isnt happening !
(A "statistical analysis" demonstrated that almost 85% of matches played in the Carabao Cup were decided after 90 minutes, leading to clubs opting to stop the extra 30 minutes before a penalty shootout.)
-
The ground is in the middle of nowhere I saw Stockport play there years ago when my cousin was coaching- bar with a snooker table under the main stand. - as for the match we will win but it will b scrappy
-
Was it before 1990 as they moved to new stadium then??
9,565 is the capacity and record attendance
9,527 Yeovil Town vs. Leeds United.
I think they have a full sell out stadium and new record attendance for when the Villa boys in town
-
Officials:
Yeovil Town v Aston Villa
JOHN BROOKS
Mark Pottage and Adam Matthews
Fourth Official : Tim Robinson

Play nyland again

Would like to see JDH too if possible
-
Nyland
Taylor
Chester
Tuanzebe
De Laet
Green
Whelan
Hourihane
Albert
RHM
Kodjia

Nyland
De Laet Elphick Tuanzebe Taylor
Whelan
Doyle-Hayes Hourihane
Adomah RHM Green

A comfortable win in normal time, please. I want to be on that motorway home quicksharp!

There's no extra time...it would go straight to penalties if it finishes in a draw.
-
He never said there was.
-
I'm glad they have said 'So Long' to the ABBA system. I also see they held the draw in Vietnam. I had a joke about M.A.S.H ing it up a bit and then realised I was getting my Korean and Vietnam wars mixed up. I'm not sure why the draw was in Vietnam when Carabao is a Thai company. Does that make Tuesday's game a 'Cup Thai'?
-
A comfortable win in normal time, please. I want to be on that motorway home quicksharp!
A comfortable win please but good luck with quick sharp, Huish Pk must be one of the furthest grounds from a motorway junction in England..

You know it's not the real Huish don't you?
It's just a kind of Huish.
-
The real one was sloping and closer to better pubs, this kinda one is level but bland and still a long way from the M5. A cup tie won turns most grounds into good grounds though :0)

The furthest from a motorway honour must got to Norwich I'd have thought.

At least in Zummerzet you have a few decent hills to ogle at and get to test the torque in your performance vee hickkle.

Well I chortled.
-
How do you pronounce that?
-
Hugh-ish
-
He never said there was.
He said a win in normal time. That implies extra time being required to me.
-
3-0 Villa win and progress into round two.
-
Taking into account new signings to bed in and still a bit of competitive ring rust I am going for Villa to win 2-0.
-
I'd give Nyland a run out and Tuanzebe to get them up to speed but would expect the likes of Bree, De Laet, Lansbury and RHM to get some game time - hopefully a comfortable win for the Villa and a home draw in the next round!
-
I reckon we will win in our new (blue?) third kit 3-0.
-
Is this on telly tomorrow?
-
Yes its on Sky
-
Poll amended.
Thank you uncle legion !
-
Yeovil are shite but we don't want to change too much. A mix of experience, those who need a game and a couple of kids should have enough to win it.

I'm sure Plymouth and Ipswich are further too. Colchester and Brighton may give them a run for their money too.

This is our first official fixture between the two clubs.
We have met once before in an end of season friendly – 15/05/1968 Won 3-1 (scorers: Mitchinson & B.Williams 2) I assume B.Williams was a trialist, as I can’t find any record of him.
Interesting little match report here of the game:
(https://thumb.ibb.co/nvg7gU/1968_05_15_Western_Gazette.jpg) (https://ibb.co/nvg7gU)
As a side note, we’ve also played in Yeovil twice, losing 0-3 to Cardiff on 04/11/1937 & beating a Somerset County XI 6-0 on 21/04/1902 as part of an end of season Tour of the South

Respect to Yeovil, now my 2ndest favourite team! Better than any of the other shite he turned up at.
-
Ron would have been player-manager at the time.
-
This will add to the fairly short list of clubs Villa have played that i've seen Bromsgrove Rovers play.
-
Without presuming anything (Luton is still fresh), the 2nd round draw is around 7pm on Thursday.
-
Like Cheltenham Villa, I'd like a mixture of youth and experience. Nyland, RDL, Tuanzebe, Elphick, Taylor, Doyle-Hayes, Whelan, Lansbury, Green, Adomah and RHM as the starting eleven.
-
Moreira
Bree
Elphick
Tuanzebe
Taylor
Lansbury
Doyle Hayes
Mcginn
Whelan
Adomah
RHM
-
I don't think you've got enough central midfielders in there
-
Although I only live 8 miles from Yeovil, I work in Exeter. So it's still an hours drive to pick my son up from work and another 45 mins to the stadium. It's still the closest Villa game I've ever been to in 40 odd years. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the youngsters play, but would still prefer a strong starting 11.
-

Folks near me at work just heard me laugh out loud on that one.
