Thought we were very comfortable throughout, reminded me of Forest away. Early goal and then we mainly defended but never under sustained pressure.

Job well done.

It’s an excellent result but I think we could have made it more comfortable if we’d have picked the odd pass instead of just booting the ball as far away as possible.

Happy with the reuslt but he needs to sort the midfield out for the 2nd leg and the final, we gave them far too much time and space. They had enough chances to get one back and we can't play such  a risky game for 90minutes.

Kodj was poor when he came on but I felt a bit sorry for him, 30 yards away from the rest of the team having balls hung up in the air for him really isn't his game.

Good result, very good first half, disappointing second half. Jack and the defence good, Albert, Hotlips, Kodjia were crap.

Thought Hourihane and Adamoah worked very hard and were very prominent in the first half, harsh, we were wide open on our left defensively when Adamoah went off

The Chester, Terry, Jedinak axis were superb, limited Boro to very little

Grealish was superb at times, commentator was right, difference in class between him and Traore was glaring

Good change from Bruce, and a brave one, to swap Hutton over and follow Traore, Elmo was struggling.

Half time only, need to target their left back more as he is hopeless

Johnstone 7, Elmo 5, Chester 7, Terry 8, Hutton 8, Snodgrass 6, Hourihane 7, Jedinak 8, Adamoah 7, Grealish 8, Grabban 5. Kodjia 3 (awful), BB 6, Whelo 6

Very professional result all round, with some solid and workmanlike performances, but I thought our extra quality always gave us the edge.

Adama showed extactly what he is, all flash and dash but limited end product. Hopefully we won’t just try to sit on the lead for the second leg.

Grabban and Kodge were both very isolated which is why they didn’t have much impact.
But, they worked their bollox off, as did they all and it paid off.

Defended deeply second half but they're so pedestrian in moving the ball wide and it was comfortable. We could be out until tomorrow and Johnstone wouldn't have made a save.

Ha! Well yeah except from the couple he made. Glad to see he managed to play today, a very commanding performance when he was called upon. Bruce owned Pullis today, got his tactics spot on. Agree with Sam Mouse, Hutton was immense as was the rest of the defence. If you'd have offered me a 1-0 Villa win before kick off I'd have bitten your hand off, so no complaints from me. It may not have been pretty but it was well orchestrated. Job done.

Very good result and sets us up nicely for Tuesday.  The inclusion of Jedinak was a good move because although his distribution was not great at times, he won pretty much everything in the air and got the important goal.  I thought Hutton, Chester and Terry defended well throughout and the Scottish Cafu did a good job on Traore.

Thought the more advanced players except Grealish were not very impressive and we seemed to lose all ambition of getting a second as the game went on.  Adomah helped out well in defence, but Snodgrass looked A bit of a liability at times back there and that would be a bit of a concern for the second leg.

Didn’t really think much of Middlesbrough and thought their main threat came from set pieces and long throws.  Traore still looked a bit clueless at times, but he seemed up for it and got on the ball quite a bit.

I was screaming at the telly to push up the pitch 20 yards and take the game to them.  But, it was a professional performance, if a little too defensive for my liking.  I wouldn't take anything for granted going in to the second leg but what a fantastic opportunity we have given ourselves.  Some really good performances but I can't single anyone out.  I think they all worked hard.  For the second leg, I would bring Bree in at left back.

Uncomfortable second half.

But Boro had to go for it.

They might not have been raining in shots to keep Johnstone working overtime, but there were plenty of occasions when they got in behind us and they'll probably feel they should have got two or three.

But balls to them.

Can't believe how many empty seats there were, they don't deserve to go up if they can't even fill their ground for such an important game. Watching the Coventry match now, and their lot are even worse!

Thought the keeper and defence as a whole were all very good. Hutton in particular did vey well.

Jedinak did his job well too, and Adomah was the right choice on the left (we looked weaker when Kodjia came on).

I thought Whelan looked good when he came on at the end, and provided some needed calm.

Think we will win by more gals at Villa Park.

Asombolonga looks a decent player. Traore was all fart no shit, just like when he played for us.

Middlesbrough have all the hallmarks of a Pulis side.  Nothing flash, long throws into the box, fairly good at set pieces, work hard.  A la Stoke, a la Albion.  The longer he stays there, the more their fans will start to dislike the football.  Today, the huffed and puffed, but didn't really look like scoring and at no point was my heart in my mouth with their efforts on goal.  Terry and Chester would have made a conscious decision to drop deeper, they looked very comfortable throughout.  Assombalonga had a few chances but snatched at them.  Villa had the two best chances of the game.

I think Pulis thought they'd be able to catch us on the counter and that Traore would get the ball in to Assombalonga more often than he did. There was one move that was close enough in fairness.

Asombolonga caused us problems though, was a handful in the box. Would far rather we had signed hi than Hogan.

I was amazed that Pulis took Assombalonga off and didn't leave him on alongside Bamford, especially when it looked like Villa had given up any ambition of scoring a second goal.  Terrible decision from Tiny. In fact, I get the feeling that Pulis doesn't really rate him.  Don't know why I think that though.

I can see why Barcelona were happy to sell Traore.
I can also see why Villa were happy to sell him. Thought before the game he and Grealish were the players who would have the most influence on the match, Jack was head and shoulders the better player.

This is my one downside today. Hutton till oreusmably man Mark Adama whichever side he plays. But Bree or Bjarnason would give me kittens

I can’t see Elmo being fit. Maybe not even for the final.

If it is a hamstring pull then he has no chance of making it Tuesday.  It would be a big ask for Bree to step in and I would not be confident about Bjarnason back there against their wide players.

Good result and ultimately comfortable, but bloody hell, Hourihane doesn’t half go missing when the pressure is on.

Agree Risso and he has been like that for some time now.  Onomah would give us that extra bit of energy and drive in midfield, but Hourihane is capable of those moments of quality that can turn games.

Some interesting stats said in commentary today.  We have conceded the fewest goals from corners this season (6) in the entire Premier and Football League.  Did I also hear right that we also haven't lost this season after going ahead in a game?

Thought it was a perfect away performance that sees us at home with a one goal head start. This against a manager who will not be comfortable having to chase a game which is exactly what he will need to do. I felt we had the bounce of the ball at times. The big concern I guess is how we fill in for Elmo given their main threat plays down the wing. There's not many options if they target the deputy.

It’s an excellent result but I think we could have made it more comfortable if we’d have picked the odd pass instead of just booting the ball as far away as possible.
Agree 100%. Was shouting at the telly for them to hold the bloody ball and pass it to a team mate instead of just leathering it upfield straight to an opponent so that it came straight back. Felt sorry for Grabban and Kodjia as I can hardly remember a decent ball played in to them all match.

I felt pretty comfortable watching the game. I am surprised they didn't start Bamford as after a few barren years he has scored a few this season. The possession was pretty much 60/40 in the home team's favour which is probably the norm.

Think Fabio will come in at right back and Bamford will start on Tuesday. Thought Besic was their best player today and Fabio caused us problems down the right when he came on. Aside from that, they were poor really but tie still very much alive.

Bit worried about Bree coming in to be honest. Hasn't convinced me at all in his appearances to date.

A great and solid team performance.
Boro tend to have goals occur in first 15 mins of matches that happened
Villa score headers that happened!
Villa rarely concede goals late in from 75 mins. Only once away from home!

I'll post up home stats by Tuesday thread.

Regards over all performance really 'enjoyed' the 1st half and the 2nd half was comfortable in main though concerning with defensive change.

Johnstone held out strong as did the defence who dealt superbly with things.

Hutton was immense and Jedinak really did his job so very well

Brilliant by Chessie and JT. JT looked injured at one point but carried on so hope he OK for home leg.

Unfortunately from my view can't be said about Jimmy dodger who came on.
Didn't even offer anything apart from one held up play and then lost it nearly resulting in goal.

Was frustrating as he didn't close down, lead from front, defend from front or do much running at all.

Yes granted was isolated but his attempts at closing down didn't exist and quite frankly was putting strain on team.

I fully supportive of him but Hogan busying himself around pitch would have been better

I guess was wrong time of match on this occasion for him to come on. I think building him up again is good as we all know Jk is a class act but having not scored may be affecting his confidence.

Bruce quite right about him only coming back into things after suffering from a very serious injury

That said villa and grealish bosses things so so classy. I particularly his continued intelligence on the ball.

There can be alot of positive from result despite the pressure and territory conceded 2nd half the organisation and defence was super.

Great result. Well played Bruce.
Well played villa and fans.

Jedinak is ideal for countering Pulisball. Terry aside and Chester to an extent, not many of our lads are capable to compete defensively in the air. Can't see Jedinak lasting 90mins mind on Tuesday.

You never know from game to game with Hourihane whether he'll play like Platt or Westwood.

I find him a very good home player where we should be attacking but it's just not his game when we play away, and mainly on the counter. The away games he's done well in we've gone at the opponent. But I would play him on Tuesday as he's got goals in him.

Great day yesterday.

My ONLY disappointment was the effort of first Grabban, and then Kodjia. If we're going to play one up front, they need to battle and fight to hold the ball up. Neither did anything near enough and Grabban got an earful from John Terry.

Job done though, a superb effort defensively and great noise from our 2000, at least the ones who weren't trying to beat each other up!

5.15pm kick offs are a nuisance for travelling fans , suit no one but the armchair supporter / television audience , another annoyance of modern football. Also gives people another couple of hours in the pub , which some clearly coped with better than others.

Great result -with some superb performances.  Jack was superb.

Agree that Grabban and Kodija could have done more .

Brilliant result yesterday - so well done to Bruce & his charges for getting it spot-on. One down, two to go. UTV!

A typical Steve Bruce performance, we played most of the game after we scored defending.
Can we get through to the PLplaying like this?

Perhaps more importantly (?), would we survive the PL playing like this?

Albion managed seven years of it. Also, I'd like to think there would be a majoir squad overhaul should we ever get there.

Very professional away performance that. We did all we needed to in a play off away leg and you felt we had several more gears to go through.

Thought Boro were poor and expected more from them. Lots of huff and puff but no end product.

Hutton, Jedinak, Terry, Chester and Grealish, all superb. Hutton had Traore in his pocket.

Kodjia looked knackered when he came on and could barely run after five minutes.

It's obvious and a football cliche but the first goal at VP is massive. I just hope we approach the game positively and don't try and sit on the 1-0. Hopefully 40,000 fans and a bouncing VP will dictate that doesn't happen. We need the whole ground up for it from the off.

i only shit myself once with that header at Johnstone , other than that , all possession and no finish and the lads at the back mostly gobbled it up.

wE could have easily been 2 - 0 and out of sight , so what the f@@k these Boro fans are going on about .

i think we should have scored with that grabban chance too If he had looked up and played one of the other lads in instead of his feeble shot.

Professional job done really .  I wasnt cheeky bum as much as I thought , always thought we could grab a second even If we were too deep in second half but that happens a lot when Villa go up 1 -0 .

Didn't look like a normal away following yesterday, or at least the hardcore 2000 whove done 18/15 aways.

Not a criticism at all, it was a brilliant away following and we made a hell of a racket and it was arms and limbs everywhere when the goal went in. But it struck me as more of the sort of crowd we'd take to the Sty or Tipton Town.

That was an abysmal effort from Grabban. Great run from Grealish, thought Grabban should have ran with it and looked to square it across goal. Grabban started ok but didn't do enough to stay involved in the game. Need a lot more from him on Tuesday night.

Saw WMPVilla on Twitter complaining about our fans' behaviour yesterday and at Millwall. I thought we were class, we made a cracking noise for only 2000. I'd much rather have a rowdy and lairy away support like yesterday than be like a Fulham or Reading.

Love how wound up the noses are that we're singing 'we're on our way' aswell. They're claiming it's their song despite the fact others like Sunderland have sung it for years and ours is a different version. Wait until they hear 40,000 singing it on Tuesday.

We're known for a love of pyro down Bromsgrove, before a Vase game a couple of years ago we were doing some in a beer garden and I got caught in the middle of a massive smoke bomb and it was horrible, eyes sting, you can't see anything and can't breath and that was outside. Doing one inside is a special level of stupid.
