A couple of weeks ago i found an old audio cassette in a draw full of old stuff, with the word 'villa' written on it in pencil.
It is 44 minutes of Villa stuff taped off BRMB in 1981 and 1982. It includes the fantastic George Gavin commentary on Withe's winner, which is the first clip i have made into a Youtube video.
I think it might be unique, I certainly can't find this anywhere else on the internet.
Enjoy!

Lovely! Thank you, Mr. Gusto!
-
Awesome.
-
Fantastic!!!!!!!!
-
Bloody great stuff
-
Great!
-
I remember them repeatedly 'teasing' it on BRMB in the build up to the World club championship in the middle of the night in December 1982. Finally Tony Butler played the recording. I still have a copy of the BBC Radio WM vinyl recording of the commentary on the game with interviews with the players at the civic reception on the B side.
Without listening to it, from memory George Gavin says something along the lines of "Peter Withe has got the goal! Tony Morley for the first time tonight got the cross over and it was the easiest thing in the world for Peter Withe to score".
-
That is absolutely priceless.
Well done.

Alright mate, the Gavin/Ross stuff is on a BRMB fan archive at http://www.mds975.co.uk/Content/brmb_archives.html
I found that site when checking the internet to find if my stuff was already online somewhere.
-
I'm interested to know if anyone else remembers the commentary at all?
The Brian Moore TV commentary is iconic of course, his words displayed on the North Stand, but i think Gavin's is much better!
The other stuff on the cassette, which i will share when ive put them online, is clips of Tony Butler reporting from the council house reception for the 81 championship, includes interviews on the balcony with several players.
Then its George Gavin presenting a Villa season review, which includes clips from the season and an interesting interview with Ron Saunders which includes the line "you will have to excuse me i've drunk a fair bit of brandy".
-
Great stuff
-
Great video, thanks for sharing. Would be interested to hear more.

Ace. Glad you managed to get back logged in on here to share it.

I remember the commentary wel.
I was in Rotterdam but got my sister at home to tape the BRMB programme. I played it to death at the time and the cassettes died so not heard it in about 30 years. Am at work now so will listen later.
I remember a rousing chorus of "We're on the march with Barton's army" before kick off which gave me goosebumps, as well as a bloke on a night shift phoning in (probably after queuing for a payphone) for a match report in the 2nd half, looking to know the ebb and flow of the game, and all Butler could say to him was "They're winning 1-0" and then cut him off.

Thing of beauty

Almost spot on with your memory!
Pity George said "22 minutes gone" instead of 22 minutes to go, i bet he was more embarrased about that than his voice breaking!
I would love to hear that vinyl, any chance you could upload that onto the internet?

Thanks for your help, i hadn't posted for years!

Thanks for sharing this with us. I welcome it because I was fortunate enough to be in Rotterdam and really haven't heard much of the various commentaries of the time apart from the popular ones. Thanks again.

My pleasure. It was Martin who sorted it, though.

I feel the need to point out that without my technical support (I sourced the required adapter to get the cassette deck connected to his laptop) you'd all be having to go round to his gaff to listen to it.
Which is itself is no bad thing, as he's a fine and welcoming chap.

Shucks Leeb, thank you. Yes i know Leeb personally and i can confirm he is just as you would imagine him to be in real life, if not more so. Thanks for the kind words mate but Wayne did it in the end, the adapter you sourced was for converting the Erdington AFC 2003 season VHS, including some flukey header you scored. I thought the adapter could work for converting cassettes too, but i didnt try that in the end because Wayne mac brought round his newfangled cassette to USB machine, and bobs your uncle!
-
Wonderful -thanks for posting it I'd not heard it before and think that it captures the absolute bedlam of that moment better than the TV commentary-just hearing the Villa fans' extended celebration brings that night right back.

I've got something similar I've recently transferred from cassette to digital. It's some highlights of Tony Butler's sports show on BRMB on the night of the match, including George Gavin's coverage of the goal and his post match summary. Once I learn how to put it on YouTube I'll give you the heads up.
-
Brings it all flooding back. We were great weren't we?
-
Excellent post. Never heard that before as I was in Manchester at uni and we watched the game on a b+w portable telly in my room, so the Brian Moore stuff I remember, but not Gavin's.
-
I was on my knees with in my bedroom with my villa badges in front of my Roberts radio listening to George Gavin. I couldn’t stand the pressure so turned off the radio for a few seconds and we scored. Bugger.
