Title: Play offs what if.....
Post by: wolfman999 on March 18, 2018, 02:06:33 PM
If we manage to stay in the playoffs, do we know if our loan players will still be eligible to play? My understanding, right or wrong, is that they were all on season long loans which by definition would end with the away game at Milwall as that is the last game of the season.

The season ends after the play-off final.

If people are writing off our chances of bridging a 7 point gap between ourselves and Cardiff then by the same token, they should do the same with the 8 point gap between us and 7th place. It would take almighty runs by BOTH 6th & 7th placed teams to dislodge us from top 6 so play offs are a given as far as I'm concerned.

Players are on loan for the entire season which includes the play offs. Huddersfield had several loanees in their line up for the play off final last season.

I am presuming season ticket holders would need to buy a ticket for the home game of the play off semi final ?

Get to the final and lose, or win, it doesn’t leave any manager a particularly long transfer window.  That said, win the final and you get maximum exposure, rather that than finish second?

Winning the final is the best way to go up - The problem is that the odds are against you as it becomes a bit of a lottery.

I'd like to think that our players are best equipped for it, given their experience but you never can tell with them.

Kodjia will score the winner in the play-off final is my prediction! If Kodjia and Grealish had been fit most of the season we'd be in at least second place by now. We've been cursed with injury once again....

Nope but they usually start about a week after the season ends. Last year the season ended on May 7th and the play-offs started on the 13th.

For an omen the final is May 26th.

I believe that one leg will be the Saturday after Millwall and the second leg will be the following Wednesday.

This is acceptable. I currently have nothing planned for those dates.

However, if Villa are in the Championship play-off final, the club and EFL will have to change the planned date because that's the weekend of Cardiff PsychFest.

Moving the game to Cardiff would also be OK

I don't care where Cardiff play Fulham in the play-off final, or when, as long as it doesn't clash with our automatic promotion parade.

I don't see play offs as a lottery but understand people view as such. This I guess is mainly due to factors such as luck and chance. Not only this but the fact penalties could be used to decide outcome.
It was Reading a pen kick away from being in Prem not Huddersfield last season

However the teams in play off earn right to be there and it depends on organisation and nerve as much as anything else. Consistency and momentum is what brought any team in to the 3rd to 6th places in league .(ahead of finishing lower)  There of course is quality  players in team  that finish in these playoff places. Maybe too some luck or bad luck in injuries and results or fixture runs / changes.

I see play offs as high pressure stakes and the  biggest matches of the season.

The tension watching though would be very high and due to expectations this could hinder.

The play offs are definitely a lottery.
In fact how often does the third placed team go up?
It is just like the league cup semi's and final - Anyone remember Bradford?
I think the third place team are often subconsciously gutted they never made the top two.
If we go through the play offs we are better having a blip now and maybe winning the last 5 games so we are in form rather than accumulating points through inconsistency and scraping third/fourth place.

So as I thought 3 day turnaround.

Not hugely promising given how we struggled v QPR and SB is hardly going to make too many changes given what is at stake in the games.

I'd rather it was first up. If we make it, we can drown our sorrows or celebrate properly that way, without having to worry about work the next day. Plus it decreases the chances of the Aussie/Icelandic/Egyptian manager trying to declare our players unavailable so they can go off with their national teams in advance of the World Cup.

Over the years of the play-offs finishing 3rd is statistically the best place to be to get promoted

Positions of clubs promoted via play-offs:

Pos   Ch.   L1   L2   Total   %age
3rd    10   9   13   32   36.78%
4th    6   7   5   18   20.69%
5th    8   5   4   17   19.54%
6th    5   8   7   20   22.99%

League 2 is 4th to 7th

Yes it's always played on Saturdays when there's a tournament in the summer. Think Champions league final is cut off for domestic season.

If we played on the Monday we'd have to negotiate with national teams to get AEM, Jedinak and Bjarni playing as by the rules of Fifa they'd be within their rights not to release them from training camps.
