Title: Fulham vs Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on February 17, 2018, 02:01:51 PM
Here we go boys and girls. The pursuit of 8 straight wins starts this afternoon at Craven Cottage. Will be a tough game. Real shame that Jack and Albert didn't make it.

No Jack or Albert? That's a blow. This is a really tough game, come on Villa I feel any points here would be a result.

Looks unnecessarily defensive to me. Only three players that you'd describe as attackers, including Hourihane.

WTF is that?

4-5-1 of sorts I think. I'm trying to work it out myself. Thor isn't playing in a defensive role, so maybe he's taken up the Jack role, just behind Hogan?

Disappointed that Andre Green fails to make the bench again.

He hasn't made the 18 since the Peterbrough game. No idea what's up.

Think this will be a tough 90 minutes, would be very happy with a point. Limited attacking potential if Snodgrass isn't on it.

This is similar 11 to what we put out v Posh.

Im guessing axel at RB, Elmo pushing up and Snoddy playing behind Hogan. Thor on the left.

It will be 4141 with Snoddy and Elmo wide and Thor inside with Connor.

Thor playing in his natural position for the first time. Axel's pace will be handy.

I see only one defensive midfielder; Jedinak. Axel is a centre half who can play full back of midfield. Thor is an attacking central midfielder who we've shoe horned into defensive midfield, full back and wide before.

I hope the confidence that the team has flowing through them gives them the belief that they can win this game irrespective of who is in the line up. Also that Bruce is sending out Hourihane, Bjarnason and Snodgrass as attacking players with Jedinak and AT behind them.

Bruce wonders why he gets the stick ....... we have no real idea how we will line up today ......surely the simple answer would have been Green for Albert and Josh for Jack but no we seem to wish to move around half the team
Always a tough one today looks even harder now

We're all naturally concerned but I suppose the retort to that would be lets see exactly how we set up and play. But it is something in him to be cautious when in truth he has the options not to be. And he might look at a draw as a great result in the grand scheme of things given the gap to Fulham and the games we've got coming up.

With our two most attacking/creative midfielders out I’m not too sure who there is to come in as replacements? Green keeps getting mentioned but he must be either injured or not doing whatever it is they need to do to make the team.

I do hope he's not playing Bjarnason in Albert's attacking spot, because every time he has played there he has been chuffing awful.

If we are confused by this team sheet imagine what it must be like for the opposition.

Hope our players know what they are supposed to be doing.

1-0 to Fulham I'm afraid because if we give a goal away I struggle to see how we will pull it back

Im at a loss as to the apparent bewilderment. Hes brought in a full back with pace to replace Elmo, who is replacing the injured Adomah. He's not included Green as he looked desperate against Peterborough. He's brought Thor into his natural position in the central midfield instead of Lansbury.

Seems fairly obvious replacements to make.

I agree that some of the responses have been a tad vociferous. How we end up lining up is always a wait and see. It think this side before Brentford would have been ultra negative but there is a chance now that it’s just more resolute in the right places. We can’t be wide open vs Fulham, and there’s still sufficient talent in there to score goals and defend well. And we have options off the bench to change things. Let’s see how we set up and the attitude we go into the game with.

Against Peterborough Green was coming back after a long injury, nearly scored in the first 5 mins and was subbed at half time when we were winning 1-0. I can't see Elmo playing on the left, Thor will play there I feel. Today we're not making like for like replacements, some players will be swopped around.

We've just won seven on the bounce by playing an attacking lineup, following a slightly ropey run of form when we played very defensively.

We've now decided to revert back to playing eight defensively-minded players. Fingers crossed it'll work. Just seems a bit regressive to the time when we were rubbish, rather than the recent games when we've been very good.

Green hasn't played since September, was understandably poor against Posh. Hasn't been in the recent U23 team. Therefore he's either not fit or not ready.

We've lost a lot of creativity & goal threat.

Keep it tight & open it up for the last 20 mins.

That’s the other side of it. That playing away against a good side, on the back of 7 wins Bruce could have been more ambitious. The natural concern is that we now will let them have all of the possession like we did at Wolves and get beaten for not trying to take the game to them.

Let's not worry too much about Green. I expect the formation to be:

        Johnstone

Elmo JT Chester Hutton

          Jedinak Axel

Snod    Hourihane.  Thor

            Hogan

Axel will turn out to be the new Patrick Vieira and all will be well.

If we do revert back to an ultra defensive set up then I'll be the first to be disappointed. However, as people have said, Barney's natural position for Iceland was attacking mid and with Tuanzebe giving Elmo free rein to push on and supply crosses I think Bruce has at least earned the right for us to see how we actually play before damning him...which is what some are doing before a ball is kicked. Well with no Kodija, Grealish or Adomah we are going to lack as a credible attacking threat, against team against the league's 2nd highest goal scorers who are also more than capable of letting a lead slip.

55 " via HDMI from a laptop  (needs a bit of power because there are ridiculously many plugins running on the site polling) and it's good.  Though only one camera and i think it makes the game look slower.

When we push them back they are very average. When we let them play their midfield and forwards are dangerous and quick. We have to find some balance here because the current approach will end in them scoring.

Lack of quality from both teams.  Snoddy looks massively less effective on the left, and Elmo is rubbish as a winger.  Bjarnason only has a fraction of Jack's attacking ability so no surprise we haven't troubled their keeper yet.

Defended well, not that they've offered anything.

Axel has Sessingon in his pocket. Hourihane is the weak link at the moment. Too deep and not getting close to Hogan.

Elmo has wasted a few opportunities to get the ball in. Very even, but they're falling over all the time.

A professional first half, keeping things tight but also creating a couple of chances too. Not sure if I want Bruce to open the game up going for the win as we could be vulnerable to their quick passing and moving.

We've pressed them well throughout and Fulham have mainly gone into their shells when we do. Jokanović is likely to change it around second half so we'll need to adjust. It's a shame both Hogan and Bjarnason have bananas for feet as both get in great positions but no end result. It's almost comical.

Very impressed with Axel but overall I can't see where a goal is going to come from. Attacking the Villa end second half, it would be a thing of beauty to see them all celebrating behind the goal.

Hourihane has been poor for a while admittedly. However,he offers an awful of of energy and generally presses as well as anyone in the team, plus we've seen he's capable of the moment.I don't think there's anyone else in the squad,up to that role, whom is as tidy with the ball.

I hope we carry on in a similar vein in the second. They'll get frustrated...We will hopefully win a few set pieces, which I think could be crucial...Hopefully Cairney hasn't got 90 minutes in him either.Without him I think they'd be toothless.

We can get the draw.

Maybe even win.

I still think we can win.

Ultimately though we are not Real Madrid or PSG in terms of attacking options.

If we lose two first choice players who are both in great form, we don't have endless quality to replace them.

Green has played one game since August. Grabban has played one half since December, Davis hasn't scored a goal since I don't know when.

Thinking starting any of them would've just ripped Fulham apart is very wishful thinking I reckon.

In any case since we've put Grabban on and took off Jedinak Fulham have been running through our midfield no problem.

It was subsituted on the hour mark.

This is the greatest frustration with Bruce. It’s a mental thing. Against any side he feels threatened by and particularly away from home he takes a very conservative, even negative approach. Today is complete proof of that. That even managing a side with 7 straight wins he didn’t have the confidence to take the game to Fulham. There was no need today. And extend this out if we are promoted. How do you think he’ll approach almost every game in the PL? Not with confidence and that will only lead to one thing.

Hamstring for Albert - picked it up against Blues but saw the game out (and scored). Calf injury for Jack I believe,
