Title: Aston Villa vs Sunderland - Pre-Match Thread

Villa Park, 19.45

Given there's a match tomorrow and all that.

I might try to make it to this.  So a guaranteed 0-0 draw then.

An early goal and it will be 5+ to the Villa.  I'm sure Moyes will try and stifle our play but we should have too much for them to be effective.

Absolutely guaranteed that he'll turn from Ray Charles to Ray Clemence for this one.

We never play a bad goalkeeper.

Perhaps its because managers get sacked often, but It always feels like we play a team when they have just appointed a new Manager.

I think it will be a frustrating, why didn't we play like we did Saturday match.

I don’t know why I thought Moyes was still in charge, maybe it’s because they were so rubbish at the weekend I thought he must still be. Now knowing he isn’t I will change my prediction. 4-0 to the Villa.

From their forum:

I'd read Coleman saying McNair isn't fit. So no Kone, Cattermole, Williams, Watmore, Wilson, Jones, N'Dong, McNair - it's going to be a struggle to put out a full team, let alone a full bench!

Maybe Jedinak in for samba or Whelan, otherwise unchanged for me. Freshen up a bit for Ipswich (we made the mistake of not doing that for Sheffield Wednesday)

I can see them frustrating us for a bit, but hopefully we’ll come through

2-0. Hourihane and Onomah.

As three words in succession think that’s ok.

As three separate words, not so sure.  Constructing sentences without the words a, must or win in will be quite difficult.

Given the new manager bounce they will get I would be surprised if Sunderland don't finish above Wolves in the table. In fact I can even see them ending the season mid-table in the next division up.

Nothing against Sunderland but I would like us to smash em. Concerned about the new manager bounce. Their keepers are very dodgy so we should shoot on sight also their loaner forward Grabban is pretty good but lightweight so should get a lot of "Samba time".

That lot haven't done much since Laurie Mac had the left-field hit 'O Superman' tbh. I guess it'll depend on how we handle Kevin Phillips - although I'm not entirely sure if he's still at Baldock Town tbh. Consequently I'm predicting an utter snore-fest, with a final score of 8-3 to the mighty Villa.

To be honest, Wales were dreadful in the last qualifying campaign. Coleman's tactics were exposed as bankrupt in both Irish games, launching high balls onto Duffys head when chasing an equaliser in Cardiff for example. Maybe a Tim Sherwood type dead cat bounce

Yep Steele got relegated with Blackburn last season and got dropped for the other guy a few weeks ago.

Fancy Snodgrass to score a free kick tomorrow night. Just getting it on target should be enough.

I often think we would have done last season what Sunderland are doing this if it wasn’t for the fact we were taken over. We both went out of the premier league in a right state.

We need to rotate a bit to stay fresh IMO. Jedinak in for Whelan, Elmo in at right back and controversial as it may be I would be tempted to start Grealish over Onomah who struggled earlier this season with 2 games in 4 days. We need to ensure we make a couple of fairly early signs if we get a couple up to save legs for the weekend. I would like to see O hare get half an hour. The luxury would be resting Davis for the last half hour.

1-1 Just have a feeling they will nick something.  Had a bit of a spike at the weekend and think that might carry on tonight. Hutton for us.

Was it a spike when they shipped two of the softest goals you'll see all season?

Play like we did second half at QPR and we will drub them.

We better bloody score. They’re the only team that hasn’t kept a clean sheet all season away from home.

Well it was a spike by their very low standards, haha!

I liked David Squire's take on whether Chris Coleman was accepting a "poisoned chalice" with the Sunderland job, and pointing out that a poisoned chalice is supposed to be attractive at first appearance.

This is more just a bottle of poison. With "poison" written on it.

I have a feeling we will come out of the blocks and get a couple of early chances. Tuck one away and this will end up comfortable. If we dont however.....

This is a game we must win to keep momentum.
He Rested Elmo and Jedi at the weekend, it's harsh on Hutton but I'd bring him back at right back and maybe the bearded one also just to freshen it up.
Grealish also to either start or come off the bench, then hopefully Gabby may be fit to do the same at the weekend?

Only coming up from London for the game on Saturday, so expect tonight's match to be an outstanding display and comfortable win. Followed by a dull 0-0 against Ipswich.

I think a lot of fans will be expecting a 2-3 nil half time lead but it ever seems to work like that. They'll make it hard for us and frustrate the crowd but we should have enough. If we create the amount of chances we did on Saturday, we should be fine.

Need to score early and then forward to 4 or 5.  This could be a thrashing let’s hope so

Simple changes to freshen up without any formation difference please Mr Bruce

Grealish / O'Hare for Onomah
Jedinakl for Whelan
Elmo for Hutton

I would love to see Jack in the team but not sure Josh should be left out. Agree with the other two.

I'm not sure I'd make too many changes. I'd like to see Da Laet get a game though.

I'm not sure we need to freshen after just one game since an international break do we?

Agree, Tom, we have the bench to give one or two a breather. I'm expecting we carry on tonight, against what is close to Sunderland Reserves, from where we left off second half at QPR.

And if we did need to freshen up, bringing in the one player we have who flew round the world and played two competitive matches in that week is the way to go about it.

Here's a chance for him to line up 4-5-1, but actually play it 4-4-2, get an early goal from Davis and improve the goal difference, if we want to chase the top 2 down tonight is one we cannot mess up.

An early goal and we can really put these to the sword with Davis grabbing a couple. If we don't they could grind out a bore draw to impress Coleman. Then again, Bale doesn't play for Sunderland.

I would like to see us go in at HT 2-0 up and then score another on 70th minute to round off a sound win and in the process not humiliate Sunderland  for the sake of my mate,

I'm not sure Bruce is one for rotation. Grealish is probably the one chomping at the bit for inclusion tonight.
